First my apologies in advance if I have left anything out of this edition but I have experienced major IT problems this month. Next may I offer a warm welcome to Walmer Baptist Church whose details are to be included in future. Some have been asking how Rural Roundup came about. Well, 20 odd years ago it started life as a simple School Newspaper and in the year 2000 four WI ladies from the village supported an application for a Millennium Award from Age Concern “Ages Working Together”. We were lucky enough to receive £12,500 which provided IT equipment for the school children to work with the adults to produce a Community publication “The Chronicle” which was delivered free by the children to all the residents of Kingsdown & Ringwould each month . Almost seven years ago, when the Parish Magazine lost its editor it seemed sensible to include information from all four churches in the benefice in the one publication. Renamed the “Rural Roundup” with an extended circulation to include Ripple, Sutton, Ashley-w-Studdal and Little Mongeham. I must say all four churches joined in with great enthusiasm and contributed by both printing and distributing. Now the publication is printed by Adams’s Printers in Dover. It is still very well received and still remains free to everyone thanks to generous donations from the Parish Councils also individual donations. We mustn't forget our Advertisers either and of course the Church members who still very kindly organise the distribution. We welcome any feedback to help us keep fresh and up-to-date. Doreen - Ed

We were overwhelmed by people's kindness and thank all those who baked or donated cakes, made sandwiches, donated raffle prizes or helped set up or clear up on the day. Volunteer Tree Warden Wanted for Kingsdown and Ringwould villages, to keep an eye on our many delightful village trees, some on public land, some on private land (by invitation) and make recommendations where appropriate . Main qualifications: Enthusiasm! An interest in trees and tree husbandry and some identification skills. The Parish Council can, if required, send a newly appointed warden on a tree warden course to brush up skills, and learn more about the role and how to make recommendations. In 2015 the annual inspection from Kent Men of Trees of Ringwould and Kingsdown resulted in a Highly Commended certificate for both villages, with a recommendation that an active tree warden would result in better tree management, preservation and higher scores. If you are interested in this role please contact Katie Amaouche, Parish Clerk, Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council on parishclerkrwk@gmail.com or 01304 729 081.

Kingsdown Beach Clean Approximately 36 local people, including several Parish councillors and Steve Manion KCC councillor, attended the beach clean organised by the Parish Council on September 25th. About 30 bags of rubbish were collected, which was significantly less than at the last beach clean in the spring. The volunteers found a lot of rubbish around the litter bins which had probably been pulled out by foxes. On the lower beach at the tide line there were a lot of fishing lines, plastic rubbish and plastic ties, and on the SSSI, used dog bags had been left out of sight. There was also an old surfboard which had been left near the angling club bin. And around and behind the beach huts, there were crisp packets and biscuit wrappers etc. The bin next to the Zetland Arms had litter surrounding it. Thanks go to all the volunteers who turned up to help. K & R Parish Council

Kingsdown Garden Society Secretary: - Mr T Ridley-Ellis Tel: - 01304 381 084 The other afternoon while working in the back garden it dawned on me that although the sun was shining the garden was relatively dark. I realised that as a result of the sun being lower the boundary shrubs needed a severe pruning to allow the light to come through. The shrubs had grown unnoticed during the summer; most of the offending growth has now been removed. What a difference to the light level it has made! Perhaps it’s one of the reasons why the lawn has taken a long time to get re-established. All the other shrubs on the boundary are under close scrutiny. I fear winter is coming but there are still some jobs to be done this month. 1. Clear fallen leaves, especially from lawns, ponds and beds. 2. Perhaps raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging. 3. Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year. 4. Prune roses to prevent wind rock. 5. Plant out winter bedding. 6. Don’t forget to feed the birds. 7. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks. The Christmas party is on Monday 28th November. Looking forward to seeing you all there. The first meeting in 2017 is Monday 30th January when Roy Wall, who is an RHS judge, will be talking about showing vegetables and flowers. If you are interested in joining a friendly and supportive garden club committee please contact me on: 01304 363 363. Bob Perry 9

Dear Friends It really doesn’t seem like six and a half years since I arrived in Kingsdown as the Rector of Kingsdown, Ringwould, Ripple & Sutton. In fact, I was licensed on 6th May 2016 – Election day! The service was held in St. John’s and was followed by a reception in the village hall. And now it is time for me to move on to new parishes and new challenges in Cornwall. Many years ago I went on holiday to Cornwall – and it was probably the worst holiday that I have ever had! I remember thinking I’m not coming back to Cornwall again – but as the saying goes, tell God your plans and he may well upset them! But one thing is certain and that his plans – whatever they are - are good, for he says: “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11). So much water has passed under so many bridges since I moved here in 2010 and it has been a great pleasure and privilege getting to know so many of you and journeying with you over the years. Some of the journeys have been sad – with the loss of loved ones, but many more have been times of joy and celebration with weddings and baptisms. And so many wonderful events – from Art Exhibitions and Quilt Shows to village summer fetes and tea parties and Harvest Suppers and Lent Lunches, to mention just a few. I have greatly enjoyed sharing all of these events, and many many more with you all. I have so many wonderful memories to take with me and would just like to say thank you to everyone for all the help, support and friendship that I have received from so many different people and organisations during my time here. And don’t the children grow up so quickly? Those who were in year six when I came here are now going to University or have a job – it really doesn’t seem possible. And so finally, I would like to leave you with a quote from Romans 15:11 which reads: “So I pray that God who gives you hope, will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe in him and may you overflow with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” With every blessing to you all.

Yours in Christ

Cathy

Sutton by Dover - Parishioners Litter Pick Day 24th September

Saturday 24th September dawned a bright and sunny day, which was fortunate as this was the morning chosen for the parish wide litter pick. Eighteen volunteers from across the parish of Sutton by Dover turned out to support this event. Dover District council had provided all the necessary equipment high-vis jackets, gloves, and picking sticks and litter bags. Four routes had been decided upon beforehand and these covered every road within the parish. The volunteers split into two’s and three’s and set about their task with enthusiasm. Notes from the Parish Council Meeting held on 4 th October.

The meeting noted that the 2015/16 Annual Return had been received from the external auditors with a clean audit report. Councillors felt that baseline traffic surveys (rumble strips) on the main routes through the Parish should be considered. This would give information on volume, speed and type of vehicles using the lanes through the Parish. The Chair to contact KCC for more details, items to be included in November agenda. In response to a request to have damaged/missing bollards replaced on Downs Road, KCC Highways responded saying although they installed them originally, they no longer had the funds to replace them unless they are on dangerous corners or around ponds etc. It was noted a successful Community Litter Pick had taken place on 24 th September and the Apple Day held on 1 st October was also well supported – see separate articles. Cllr Akhurst was thanked for providing a walnut tree which had been planted in the community orchard as a memorial to Ray Odell. Chair – Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council

Apple Day 1st October 2016 The day dawned wet and windy and although we were not able to spend time enjoying picking fruit in the orchard, the pressing of apples still took place in Cllr Ron Little’s garage. Two apple presses were set up and visiting parishioners were able to try their hand at pressing freshly picked apples and drinking the resulting delicious juice.

More apples were available at the October Parish Meeting for Parishioners to take home. Thank you to those who provided the venue and equipment, and gave of their time and expertise in what turned out to be a fun and social event. 27

Our October meeting was our Annual Meeting and our WI Adviser, Gill Crone, explained to us the functions of an Adviser and explained that unfortunately some WI branches have had to close as no member was willing to take the role of President, Treasurer or Secretary. These roles are necessary for the running of a branch. We happily were able to have these positions filled at our branch and we elected our President and Committee for the coming year. We received an end of year report from our Secretary outlining the many interesting speakers and outings we have enjoyed this year and our Treasurer issued a financial report. Our President spoke of our plans to visit Eltham Palace and Down House next year and we have another year of informative speakers to look forward to. Our next meeting is on Monday 14th November at 2.00pm at Kingsdown Village Hall when Steve Ottewill gives a talk on The Life of a Silversmith. We hope to see many members there and maybe welcome some visitors who will want to join us. Lisa Souter

At the October meeting Walmer WI members enjoyed a very informative talk from Gaye Waters, who on her retirement from teaching decided to buy a horse and take up horse riding again. Quite by accident she got involved with Riding for the Disabled (RDA) at Cornilo, Sutton-byDover. Cornilo aims to provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment for people with disabilities and has been registered at Sutton since 1981. Four local Schools send groups and buy into the services available on a Tuesday morning during term-time. The intention is to stimulate co-ordination, strengthen muscles, improve fitness, increase mobility and self-confidence of these children. It also teaches awareness of the animal needs. Volunteers are always needed on a Tuesday morning to do various tasks from making teas and sorting the equipment to leading the horses. If you think you could help in any way, please visit www.corniloriding.com or telephone: 01304 380 369 The next Walmer WI meeting is on Friday 11th November at Walmer Parish Hall when it will be the Annual Meeting. Visitors are always made very welcome. 29

WALMER PARISH COUNCIL

Clerk to the Council:- Kirsty Holroyd 8 The Strand, Walmer, Kent CT14 7DY Tel: 01304 362 363 Web site: www.walmercouncil.co.uk email: walmerparish@btconnect.com

At its October meeting Walmer Parish Council discussed a wide range of business. In the absence of the chairman Cllr Clive Grant, Vice Chairman, chaired the meeting. Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour Reports The Clerk reported the problem at Wollaston Road has now been resolved and it appears that no offence is being committed. A combined Councillors and police surgery will be held on Saturday, 29 th October from 11.30 am to 1 pm. in the Parish office. Cllr Mrs Johnson and Cllr D Thompson volunteered to attend. Planning Committee Cllr Grant reported on the committee’s work and reminded members that the Committee is keeping up to date with Neighbourhood Planning developments but there are no plans to create a Neighbourhood Plan for Walmer. Events Working Group Members resolved to send cheques to the Deal Memorial Bandstand Committee [£60] for the use of the bandstand on the annual picnic day and to the Deal Community Carnival Association [£100] in recognition of the hard work of the stewards they provided at the Picnic. Hawkshill Working Group Members decided to seek legal advice concerning responsibilities over the private road. Amenity &Environment Committee The Clerk brought members up to date with the situation with the asbestos found on Parish land. The specialist company which identified the material had recommended removal of the material and she had arranged to meet a contractor on site the following day. Members considered two quotes to bring Plots 19 and 14A back into use. Because the quotes were similar in price members decided that whichever contractor carry out the work first will be offered the contract. That allotment rental deposits be increased to £75.00 for each new tenant and plot rents for all tenants be increased by £5.00 from January 2018. Councillor M Johnson gave a short history of Stoney Path, a thin piece of land along the Western Boundary of the allotments which has become problematic providing habitation for wildlife and a dumping ground for local residents and builders. No owner can be identified and it was proposed that the Council consider acquiring the land and asked the clerk to investigate how this can be achieved. Councillors’ Allowances Members received recommendations from the EK Joint Parish Independent Remuneration panel for the municipal years 2015/6 to 2018/19 and approved the same allowances as previous years in respect of costs associated with the many duties they carry out around the Parish. Councillors, £420.00, Chairman, £840.00 The Chairman asked councillors to consider the amount of effort they put into those duties and whether they might be able to do more for the Parish. There would be the customary opportunity for discussion on this matter prior to approval of the payments at the November meeting. DATE OF NEXT MEETING Wednesday, 2nd November 2016 at 7 pm at the Parish Office, 8 The Strand, Walmer. All are welcome. Kirsy Holroyd Clerk to the Council

New bus shelter provided by Councillors Walmer representatives on the Kent County Council have responded to stories they were told by residents – young and old – that they were being drenched whenever it rained as they waited for a bus outside the Walmer Lawn Tennis club on the Dover Rd. Councillors Eileen Rowbotham and Mike Eddy combined together to contribute funds from their special members allowances to pay for a new bus shelter. The new shelter is now in place and the councillors this week tried it out for themselves. They were pleased when they heard members of the public who happened to be waiting for buses welcome the new facility. Councillor Rowbotham explained: “There was a bus stop here but no shelter to protect schoolchildren or older residents from the weather so Mike and I decided to get together and do something about it.” Councillor Eddy said: “KCC members have a special allowance which they can use to make life better for their local people. When we heard from some residents about the lack of shelter here we immediately decided to do something about it.” The new shelter, which is benefitting Walmer residents, cost around £4,000. Elsewhere in Walmer residents will have seen workmen busily demolishing what appeared to be perfectly good bus shelters and replacing them with new ones. This is because the bus shelters are paid for and maintained by the companies who place the advertising in them and the contract has recently been awarded to a new company.

Back by popular demand Walmer Parish Council have invited Kent Kite Flyers back next year following the successful Kite Flying event held on Walmer Green in May this year. Hundreds of people flocked to the Green to watch giant kites being flown by experts and to learn how to build and fly their own kites. Volunteers from the Parish Council taught visitors how to build, decorate and fly kites and over 200 free kites were given away to children by the Council.

Malcolm Ford of Kent Kite Flyers explained that club members have flown special large kites on Walmer Green to raise money for Children in Need. Walmer Green provides a perfect location for kite flying, with lots of open space and beautiful views and the council are discussing possible dates in May or June for the return visit with the club. Cllr Pat Heath, chairman of Walmer Parish Council, said: “We had such an enthusiastic response to the first event from local families that we decided to repeat it next year, We are all looking forward to taking part in the event again.” Every month on a Saturday morning the Council holds advice surgeries at its offices on the Strand which are attended by councillors and local police officers. Anyone needing advice is invited to attend. Full details of dates and times are posted on the Council’s website above.

RNLI Fish & Chip Supper It was a full house at the Downs sailing club in Walmer for the annual RNLI fund raising fish supper where over 80 supporters and friends were entertained to a combination of folk songs and sea shanties. Alison Stone, secretary of the Walmer, Deal and District RNLI branch, who organised the evening, explained: “This is part of a nationwide event which the RNLI has introduced as a way of enabling supporters, lifeboat crews and all their families to get together. We love it and it is wonderful seeing our supporters being able to mix with the lifeboat crews and their families in what has become a sell out event. As well as the Hoodeners there was a quiz and a raffle with many excellent prizes. The evening raised £521.10 to enable the vital work of the lifeboat service to continue.

Congratulations on producing this excellent magazine for our rural communities, and thank you for inviting me to write a few words in my role as Chief Guide of Girlguiding UK. All Girl Guides make a commitment to serve their community and protect the environment, when they say their Guide Promise and Laws. One of these laws states 'A Guide respects all living things and takes care of the world around her'. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful part of east Kent with its rich heritage, fantastic countryside and glorious coast line - we should cherish it. There are 10 million Girl Guides in 146 countries around the world, but this is not enough to ensure a sustainable future. It is a simple fact that in order to become more sustainable, we ALL have a responsibility to respect all living things and take care of the world around us, so let's start with our wonderful local rural communities! Valerie le Vaillant OBE, Chief Guide, Walmer, Kent Tuesdays 10am-12 noon in Elizabeth House, Are you a new computer/tablet/ipad user who is struggling to get to grips with the modern technology? Do you want to learn how to make use of all that is offered by the internet? Would you like to find out how to e-mail and chat to your friends and relatives around the world? Do you want to transfer photos from your digital camera to your computer? Our team of volunteers can help you with all these and many more topics. The sessions are run on a drop-in basis and you will need to bring your own tablet or laptop computer running Windows, fully charged. If you are thinking of buying a new laptop or tablet – feel free to call in during a session to try one of these to see how you get on. There will be a flat rate charge of £2 per session. The Club welcomes new users who are struggling to get to grips with their computers/tablets, and experienced users who would like specific doubts and queries clarified Every possible effort is made to give equal attention and assistance to each individual. No lengthy one-to-one tuition to one particular individual is possible during these sessions. However, this can be arranged for a set fee. So why not pop in and see how we can help you?
