Hello All, Just to remind everyone that the next publication of Rural Roundup is a double issue covering July and August so please remember to include all dates and information covering that period, when you send in copy. I will be looking out for the winning Sunflower again this year. I actually grew some from seed and planted out a couple of really healthy specimens in my front garden. Sadly though, the one I had high hopes for has been decimated over-night by the slugs. What a disappointment! My other little tender plants that I planted out far too early appear to be thriving. That was a bit of luck! I don’t know how many people Katie has heard from who are willing to open their gardens to others on Sunday 17th July from 10.00am to 4.30pm. If you live in Ringwould, Kingsdown, Sutton, Ripple, Ashley, Studdal or Little Monegham, she is waiting to hear from you. Come on, everyone join in the spirit of the event. It doesn’t matter what size your garden is, the point of it is just to allow others to enjoy what makes your garden unique and to make it a fun day for all.

See you .

Doreen

Highlights of the meetings held on Monday 9th May 2016. The Annual General Meeting was held from 7.00 to 7.30pm. Cllr Doreen Clark resigned from the Parish Council, and Councillors expressed their thanks to her for the contribution she has made over the past 20 years. Cllr Barbara Hansom was elected as Chair and Cllr Nick Jackaman as Vice-Chair of the Parish Council. The Ordinary meeting of the Parish Council commenced at 7.30pm. Members of the public attended the meeting, and questions were raised about proposals to DDC for the public toilets in Kingsdown and the wooded area behind Kings Close in Sea Road, Kingsdown.  Finance – the monthly payment schedule was approved. Kent Association of Local Councils (KALC) membership was approved.  Footpaths – the Parish Clerk is to request an ongoing schedule of completed works from the contractor. Quality control of maintenance works is to be discussed at a later meeting.  FoKPP – Councillors were delighted to hear that £2,000 has been raised so far from the May Day Fete. Three major grant applications are being prepared for further fundraising.  Highways – The repair works have started at No Name Road, Kingsdown, and some local residents have agreed to make a contribution to the costs of the works. The TRO consultation is currently taking place. KCC have produced a quotation for the works to install the 20mph speed limit, with Amey as the contractor. KCC Cllr Steve Manion confirmed a grant of 50% towards the cost of these works. It was agreed that subject to the 20 mph scheme being approved, Amey be approved as the contractor, the quotation be accepted, and work started.  Planning – Five applications were reviewed this month. A Planning Log is available on the Planning page of the website.  Allotments – Annual rents are being received.  Communications – The Parish Council stall at the FoKPP May Day Fete raised £148.00 towards the fundraising for FoKPP play park equipment.  Environment and Amenities – Prize giving was held at Ringwould and Kingsdown CEP School for the Keeping the Parish Clean Poster Competition. The winning poster was produced by Tom Atkinson. Approval was given for three Metal Poster signs. The appointment of Mrs Teresa Ridley-Ellis, Mr Mark Trewartha and Mr Roger Stevenson as volunteer Tree Wardens was approved. Quotations for flower beds in Ringwould and Kingsdown to commemorate the Queen’s 90th birthday are to be put to the Finance Committee.  Correspondence – All correspondence was reviewed and responses will be sent by the Parish Clerk.  AOB – Cllr Williams represented the Parish Council at a meeting in Sandwich regarding the proposed dredging of Goodwin Sands and will circulate the minutes of the meeting to all councillors. Cllr Williams and Cllr Hansom will attend future meetings. The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 13 th June 2016 at Kingsdown Village Hall at 7.30 pm. All residents are very welcome. Sporting Success On a Wednesday in April, Kingsdown Mini Troupers performed in the regional heat of the ‘Great Big Dance Off’. The dance group, made up of children from the Junior classes, was only formed earlier this year and they have been training hard every Monday morning before school. The regional heats took place at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone with 15 schools competing in the primary category. The children performed Jo Hygate amazingly on stage and were rightly rewarded with a third place in the competition, earning the right to compete at the National Final in Birmingham next month. This is an outstanding achievement and entirely due to the hard work of the children and the fabulous choreography, costumes and dance training from Danni Jenner and her team. Summer Fayre The School’s Summer Fayre, organised by our wonderful PTFA, will be held on Saturday 2nd July. Please add this date to your diary and come along and support your local school. Every penny raised will be spent on the children. Jo Hygate Term 6

Dear Friends, A couple of weeks ago on 15th May, we celebrated Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost Sunday is the 50th day after Easter it is the day, some 2000 years ago, that the Apostles were filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit and they began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the people who were gathered spoke. And we are told that about 3,000 people were converted and baptized on that day. Jesus began his ministry by making these words his own: “The Spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour”. What a beautiful mission, and most certainly not a bad manifesto to begin with, but unlike some politicians, that I am sure we could all name, He was faithful to it and he keeps his promises, he keeps his manifesto. Jesus continues to pour out the Holy Spirit on us so that we too can carry on his mission, because today, we are his Disciples, we are his hands and his feet. The Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, individually and collectively, and filled with the Holy Spirit, they began their mission. And we see the great courage and confidence with which they did so. We too can take heart and learn from them, because we too need not only courage, but also encouragement and confidence as we continue Jesus’ mission. Pentecost was the beginning of the new era of the Spirit and it brought to the Apostles what they needed for their special role. Christ had appointed them to be his primary and authoritative witnesses and on that day the Apostles spoke a new language, a new language of love and forgiveness, just as much for today as then. And what was this language? It was the language of peace rather than of war; the language of co-operation rather than of competition; the language of forgiveness rather than of vengeance; the language of hope rather than of despair; the language of tolerance rather than of bigotry; the language of friendship rather than of hostility; the language of unity rather than of division; the language of love rather than of hate. That is the real miracle of Pentecost. That through the gift of the Spirit, people of different languages learned to profess one faith, to the praise and glory of God. And it is a miracle, which, thankfully, continues to this day. So let us go and practise this “new language” of love and forgiveness wherever we may journey. Yours in Christ, Cathy Church of St John the Evangelist Kingsdown Flower Rota Friday 27th May 10th June 24th June

Save the Children A recent quiz in aid of Save the Children was held during Save the Children Week. Last year the charity saved and transformed the lives of millions of children. It worked to improve healthcare and education and tackle chronic malnutrition in some of the toughest parts of the world. Despite huge advances in the last 25 years, 17 000 children still die every day from illnesses we know how to prevent or treat like pneumonia and malaria. Here in the UK the charity campaigned to get all children reading well. A Save the Children reading project was run at the Down's School, Deal. The next quiz in aid of Save the Children is on Thursday 30th June at the Deal Vic's Cricket Club CT14 7RQ 7pm for 7.30 pm £2 a head, no booking required. Sarah Spong

New Kingsdown Street and Footpath Map From my early experience of occasionally becoming lost when walking around the village, I wanted to produce a map that would identify in detail where in amongst the residential areas the footpaths arose and where they led. As many of you will know, there are some really interesting walks (and useful short cuts) to be found both within the village and continuing beyond with some beautiful country and seaside views. Now, with sponsorship from KCG I have produced a map on A3 which is available in Dell’s Shop, Upper Street, Kingsdown at a cost of only £1. New residents will be provided with a free copy as part of the Welcome Pack. Proceeds from the sale of the map are going to local good causes and with four grandchildren and another on the ways, initially, I want any monies raised to support the Friends of Kingsdown Play Park project. Residents are encouraged to buy a map (even if you know your way around, your visiting friends and relatives would find it useful) and promote its availability to other residents and visitors. Joe Wall

The Curlings of Kingsdown The story of the development of modern day Kingsdown from a small fishing and seafaring hamlet by the end of the 17th century, to a modern village complete with a manor house, church, vicarage and first village school rests in no small way with the story of a Mr William Curling and his wife Elizabeth. The couple came to Kingsdown in the early 1820’s, bought extensive land and proceeded to live in the area for some 35 years. Their story, their families’ story, their reasons for coming to Kingsdown, their achievements, and their legacy to the people of Kingsdown is what in summary this booklet begins to explore and record. A copy of the booklet has been submitted to Kent Libraries for consideration to be included in the local historical archives. If you would like an electronic version of “the Curlings of Kingsdown” please email the author: Jenny Wall on:- jen.wall@outlook.com

Kingsdown and Ringwould WI We were taken aback as we entered the hall for our May meeting; instead of rows of chairs, we were confronted with four large tables with a colour code on each one...to match the coloured dot on our name labels....this implied we may have to do some work! We were right! As I mentioned in last month’s report, each year the WI presents a resolution to be voted on at the National Annual Meeting. Each table was given the task of discussing one of two issues; one concerning care for patients with dementia in hospital, the other about food waste from supermarkets. Each table was asked to present the given issue in favour of the motion or against it. Well, you can imagine what lively discussions between us! (We were fed cake to help us!) At the end of the talking, members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the resolution calling on all supermarkets to sign up to voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, thereby passing surplus food on to charities, thus helping to address the issue of increasing food poverty in the UK. We have some interesting trips to look forward to...Chelsea Hospital very soon, and a trip down the Medway in “Kentish Lady” towards the end of September. We are also hoping to visit Eltham Palace in the not too distant future. Finally, our National Magazine, WI Life, is looking for members who have led interesting lives, willing to be interviewed, and appear as the Cover Girl. That surely means all of us? Our next meeting is on 13th June at Ringwould Village Hall at 2pm. George Chittenden, a local author and historian, will take us on a journey of 800 years of smuggling. Christine Smith

What a really lovely day we had for the May Day Fete! The sunflower seeds for the children went down very well, all the adults were smiling and the weather was amazing. How lucky were we? Well done to the organisers! So far very impressed with the anti-slip properties of the decking stain. However, the back lawn is not very impressive at the moment. Lots of moss, very thin patches and clumps of rye grass. It seemed to transform into its now very sorry state overnight. The fight- back has started under the leadership of you know who. If you haven’t done so, now is the time to position those hanging baskets and clip evergreen hedges such as privet and box. Remember this month the weeds will be thriving so keep that hoe handy. Another task worth pursuing is dead heading. Removing dead flowers diverts the plant’s energy to producing new flowers instead of seeds. Continue the campaign against slugs and snails. They love all the young shoots, especially delphiniums and petunias. Don’t forget to spray the roses and watch out for the lily beetle. Fill gaps in herbaceous borders with summer bedding. If you want to grow your own spring flowers for next year sow your seeds June/July. Don’t forget the Garden Show which will be held on Sunday 7th August this year. At next month’s meeting on 27th June our guest speaker will be Steve Bradley (Radio Kent Sunday Gardening). Steve will be talking about and taking questions on pruning. More news re this later. Enjoy the summer and stay healthy. Bob Perry

St John’s Heritage Association, Kingsdown This Association has been formed by a group of people to raise funds for the restoration and preservation of the church of St John the Evangelist, Kingsdown, and its environs. It is run by a committee and holds a minimum of two fund-raising events each year. The Association was started in 2013 and since then we have raised a total income of £6,076 plus over £500 of Gift Aid refunds. Our income is generated by annual subscriptions, donations and fund-raising events. In May of this year we hosted a number of stalls for Kingsdown Garage Safari on 8th May in the Rectory’s front garden plus a bacon buttie stall in the middle of the village, which raised £655. In the summer we are proposing to hold a Speciality Supper Evening in the church and on 10th September, we are planning another ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concert, which was such a great success last year and raised £726 towards the restoration of the stained glass windows. So far the Association has donated to the Church £810 for the new floodlights at the rear of the church and £822 for urgent repairs to the Main West Window. The work to the stained-glass windows will commence shortly, when another donation will be made. We currently have 41 members, of which ten are lifetime members. The remainder pay an annual subscription of £10 for an individual and £18 for a couple. Life membership is a minimum of £100. Nearly all members to date have signed a Gift Aid Declaration that increases our subscription income by a further 25% minimum. The more members we have, the higher our income. We therefore urge you to join our Association by completing the application form. Payment by Standing Order would be preferable. Please contact David Dobby on 01304 373 331 or dobby@golfclubsec.co.uk, if you are interested. We welcome your support and attendance at all our events. David Dobby

It is to be a bumper year for slugs and snails but please try and avoid using slug pellets as they are very bad for hedgehogs. Research shows that the number of hedgehogs has declined from 30 million in the 1950s to under 1 million now. Sadly June Hollingsworth has been taken ill and so her talk on the History of the Kent Coalfields has had to be cancelled. Fortunately John Buckingham has just moved into the village. Described by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds as ‘One of Kent’s most popular wildlife speakers and none better at imparting a wealth of knowledge in an entertaining and stimulating way’, he has kindly agreed to step into the gap and so our next talk will be: Tuesday 7th June – Wildlife through the Seasons by John Buckingham at Ringwould and Kingsdown C of E School. Registration and free wine and nibbles from 7:30pm with the talk starting at 8pm. Members £3 and non-members £4. No need to book. All Welcome! Annie Martin. Email: talks@kingsdownconservation.co.uk
