The Village Hall Trustees have agreed that the defibrillator can be installed on the hall’s forecourt as soon as possible. The Trustees recently applied to Kent County Councillor Steve Manion, and have been successful in obtaining a grant of £400 towards a specific cabinet for the defibrillator. Brother and sister, Geoff and Lesley Perry, have generously offered a further £300 towards the cost of the cabinet. The Trustees and the family would appreciate offers of funds and expertise from local tradesmen and villagers to enable the cabinet to be connected to the hall’s electricity supply, and to ensure there are sufficient funds to maintain the equipment. Training will be offered to anyone wishing to know how to use the defibrillator to help save lives. Highlights of a meeting held on Monday 8th February 2016. Members of the public attended to discuss the dredging of the Goodwin Sands and No Name Road. The PC is concerned with possible effects and erosion to Goodwin Sands and will be writing to Deal, Walmer and St Margaret’s Parish Councils to seek their opinions. Cllr Steve Manion, KCC, updated the council of the challenges of the welfare of children asylum seekers, and KCC will receive a 2% increase for Adult Social Services. Community Warden: Mr Martin Dadd updated the council on continual parking issues around the primary school; fly tipping has resumed in Ringwould. The Parish Council ask all groups/societies/organisations to consider road safety when placing signs outside Ringwould Village Hall. Quotations and work for parish notice boards is ongoing. The monthly payment schedule, the Budget and Precept for 2016/2017 was approved. No Name Road and land adjacent to Zetland Arms: further research is to be undertaken. Old Stairs Road has had 20 mph signs installed. Four planning applications were reviewed this month. A new log of current applications and PC decisions have been created for all councillors; this will be displayed under Planning on the website. Work continues on the website and the new style, updated website will be reported at the Annual Parish Meeting. Agenda process reviewed. Feedback to council on DDC Town and Parish meeting and new ‘Keep me Posted’ facility enables public to receive current information by email from DDC and other national agencies on chosen topics such as planning, environment and news. The PC will write to congratulate Ringwould and Kingsdown Primary School on their excellent Ofsted report. The PC will have a stand at the May Day event in Kingsdown. It was agreed the Beach Annual Clean will be on Sunday 3 rd April this year. E&A Working Party will research an Emergency Planning Project for the Parish and report back to the PC. Management of Freedown Wood is to be researched and reported to PC. A new tenant has been installed at the allotments. Fundraising has been very successful for Friends of Kingsdown Play Park; they are now applying for charity status. All correspondence was reviewed and responses will be sent . In addition the Parish Council will write to the Post Office again in support of retaining a Post Office in Kingsdown. The date for the Annual Parish Meeting on 16 th March at 7.30 pm in Kingsdown Village Hall was confirmed. Community Groups/Organisations/ Societies will be invited to give an update on their activities. The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 14 th March 2016 at Kingsdown Village Hall commencing at 7.30 pm. All residents are very welcome. Kingsdown news cont... Friends of Kingsdown Play Park May Day Fete - Sunday 1st May 2016 Many of us have fond memories of maypole dancing, homemade jam, beer tents and the coconut shy! Well, Friends of Kingsdown Play Park are organising a traditional village fete to be held at Kingsdown Park on Sunday 1st May 2016 from 12-3pm. We are organising an event to bring all members of the community together. The fete will be a fantastic opportunity for all village groups to raise awareness and much needed funds. It will also offer the opportunity for local craft businesses and food producers to sell their products. A number of village community groups are taking part and supporting the event and we have lots of exciting things in store for everyone who comes along on the day. Please get in touch if you would like to help out with the event in any way. We’re looking for volunteers to help on the day, local businesses to sponsor the event or advertise in the fete programme. We’re also in need of raffle prizes for the prize draw. Kingsdown’s Annual Easter Egg Trail Following the huge success of last year’s Easter Egg Trail, when over 200 children took part, Kingsdown Pre-School are back again! The school underwent an Ofsted inspection on the 21st/22nd January 2016. The published report has now arrived in school and I am delighted to be able to announce Ofsted has judged Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School to be OUTSTANDING in every category. This is an incredibly important achievement and in an educational climate where it is increasingly difficult to meet the criteria for an ‘outstanding’ judgement, it is certainly something to celebrate. Jo Hygate I would like to share some of the comments made in the report that we are especially proud of, although the whole report deserves reading. “Pupils are self assured, well rounded young people very capable of stepping confidently into their next steps of education.” “The exceptional individual attention which nourishes each pupil’s aspiration and talents is mirrored by the continuous development of staff.” “The curriculum is exceptional.” “Pupils are ambitious, they take responsibility for themselves and want to do well.” “Although very successful in sporting activities, pupils stress that fairness, respect and how you play are very important.” “This is not a school that is content to rest on its laurels. Earth Hour – Saturday, 19th March 2016 Earth Hour was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage over 172 countries and territories worldwide. But what is Earth Hour? It is an international event, run by the W.W.F., World Wildlife Foundation, to highlight climate change, demonstrate public support and show the World leaders that people care about what is happening to the Earth. For one hour only, people all over the world are asked to switch off their lights. Support for this event has been growing over the years and millions of people now participate. In addition, national public buildings are plunged into darkness for an hour, as spotlights are switched off. These include such monuments as the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Eiffel Tower, Coliseum, Taj Mahal and the Sydney Opera House. Earth hour this year is on Saturday, 19th March 2016 at 8.30 p.m. It is just the lights that are switched off. All other electrical appliances, such as televisions, radios, and computers can all still be used. The school will be holding a ‘switch-off’ day during March and encouraging the children and their families to support Earth Hour. St John’s Heritage Association is holding a Boot Fair in the church on Saturday 16th April between the hours of 10.00am and 2.00pm. Entry will be free. Stalls may be purchased at £10 each and those willing to take a stall should register their interest with David Dobby on 373 331 or dobby@golfclubsec.co.uk. The purchase of stalls will be on a first come basis. A minimum of 10% of all takings is to be donated to the church building fund. Refreshments and a hot dog stall will be available. Reflecting on the Lent Season I am writing this on the eve of Valentine’s Day – which this year is also coincidentally the eve of the First Sunday of Lent. This may sound unfortunate, but it will be even more unfortunate in 2018 when Valentine’s Day falls on Ash Wednesday itself – the day when Lent officially begins. Valentine’s Day! It’s a day stacked not only with love, but indulgence – chocolate, champagne, rich food. Fortunately, if you planned a Valentine celebration this year, there is absolutely nothing to worry about because Sundays are always feast days, even in Lent. It’s the day of resurrection! How can we fast on the day of resurrection? The Roman Catholic Church even forbids it. Now that doesn’t give licence for too much excess, but thinking about Sundays in Lent helps us to think about the role of nurture during a time of abstinence. Unlike Christmas and Easter, many people don’t look forward to Lent. Childhood memories of giving up chocolate or sitting through weekly Stations of the Cross immediately come to mind. Words like “sacrifice,” “discipline,” and “self-denial” are often used in ways that suggest that Lent is something to be endured rather than a time of grace and spiritual growth. But have you ever thought of Lent as a yearly second chance? Each year the Church gives us six weeks to take a long, loving look at our lives to see if our values and priorities are in line with God’s desires for us. Since most of us find that we’ve wandered from God’s path, Lent becomes that second chance, or spring clean, to “return to God with our whole heart.” Lent is a time for the renewal of discipleship. Whether or not we engage in a fast or some kind of abstinence and discipline, we all face the temptation to give up, to cut corners; and sometimes we are simply caught out by that opponent whose aim is total destruction. But Sunday is a day of resurrection. It pulls our gaze forward to look beyond the struggle, beyond the cross and to the assurance of victory. As a resurrection day, Sunday is a day of judgement, forgiveness, grace and renewal. Our failures are dealt with and we begin again. But there is judgement on the devil and his works and he is always there lurking in the shadows trying to catch us out. The Sundays in Lent, therefore, should be celebrated richly – not as excuses for excess, or with a sense of respite, but in order to nurture our spirits and draw from the well of grace. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities. Invite family members to share your thoughts, hopes, and desires for Lent. Decide to support one another in whatever you choose to do and remember that, as you journey through this annual second chance, each step brings you closer to the welcoming arms of our loving God. John Gray came up with the idea of a little garden area for the village hall. He and I got together and this is the plan. Two benches and two planters at the back of the grounds which will be seen from the kitchen window. Margaret Walter has said she will buy one of the benches as a memorial in memory of her husband Andrew. Many of you will know him from all the time he gave to the village. Also he worked as a vet and advised me on my animals. Some people think the idea is a waste of time and no one will use it, and some say they wouldn't use it as they would prefer to sit in their own gardens. Needless to say, John and I have not been overwhelmed by enthusiasm from committee members. People using the hall all day might like to sit outside at lunch time; dog walkers and ramblers who use the foot path might like to sit awhile. Anyone with a precious garden who is visited by friends with lively children might prefer to pop over to the village hall where the youngsters can kick about while the oldies sit on the benches and have a natter. There is room for one or two more benches if anyone would like to put one by the hall, not just to remember a loved one but perhaps to celebrate their family's long history in Ripple. Bardolph’s Box A past pupil of Kingsdown and Ringwould Primary, I used to contribute to The Chronicle, the free village newspaper based at the school. Together with my willing family I delivered many a paper around the village, as Doreen said when I phoned her to talk about this article, ‘That was many years ago!’ I’m now a professional theatre director and about to bring the first production by my theatre company to our area. It would be great to see you there. Bardolph’s Box is designed to introduce children to Shakespeare’s plays through a fun, engaging and interactive performance. During the 40-minute piece, three professional actors will introduce the audience to a number of Shakespeare’s characters from a range of his plays, from Cleopatra to Puck. With live music and custom-built set and costumes, the production promises a roller-coaster ride through the Bard’s work – perfect for marking the 400th anniversary of his death. Intended for a family audience, there are definitely elements in this production for all ages to enjoy. Touring throughout Kent, and a bit of Sussex and Merseyside, our closest public performances to Kingsdown are The Astor Theatre on Thursday 17 th March, at 1.30pm and 7.30pm, and Ashford Library, Saturday 19th March at 10.30am. We’re also performing for the primary school during our first week. I’m so pleased to be bringing my first production by Up The Road to my home area. It would be great to see familiar faces at The Astor in particular. The evening is being held in memory of the late Nathan Sewell, a huge contributor to the arts in Deal. Cllr Little informed members that the pruning at the Community Orchard had been a success. Cllr Merriman informed members that there had been thefts from barns and a shed recently and to be vigilant. Residents in the Parish were reminded that there is still a Parish Councillor vacancy on the Council and to contact the Clerk for more information. Email: lindadalton4@gmail.com Our speaker in February was Geoff Turner, who gave us an illustrated talk on the 1926 Cross Channel swimmers. Why 1926? Well, it was a bumper year for people, mainly from America, swimming the Channel, but more importantly, it was the year that Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to succeed in this perilous challenge. The old photographs and news accounts were very entertaining, although seeing them made me wonder why anyone should venture forth into such murky waters! We are looking forward to our trip to the Chelsea Hospital in May, to see the Physic Garden as well as the Hospital itself, with, of course, lunch in between. Although it is a very long time ahead.... September, next year... Liz Bembridge has managed to buy some tickets to see the London performance of War Horse, coming to The Marlowe. We are very lucky, as tickets are already selling very fast! Within our National Organisation, we are invited to enter for the Denman Cup, by writing a letter to our younger self, giving advice, the benefit of our experience etc, in no more than 500 words.....not sure I could get all I would want to say in so few words...! An interesting challenge. At our next meeting, Rosemary Crippin will talk to us about Bags, Beads and Embroidered Books , a bit more relaxing than swimming the Channel, methinks! We shall meet on Monday 14th March at 2pm in Kingsdown Village Hall. Do come! Christine Smith
March has arrived, Spring is on the move, and warmer, longer days are coming! Now is the time to get the garden into shape; time to stop thinking and planning and start doing. Investing time and effort now will pay dividends as the year progresses. The following is a random list of some of the actions that could be taken: 1. Remove moss and weeds from paths, patios and driveways. Yes, it’s boring but if you get on top of it now it could save a great deal of work later. 2. Weed and dig over your borders and beds incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Don’t forget the chilly March winds can dry out the soil, so mulch as soon as you have dug. 3. Cut down perennials that have been left standing, including grasses. Lift and divide overgrown clumps, then get ahead of the game by putting supports in place now so that the plants grow through rather than be trussed up. 4. If you have a greenhouse or cold frame you can buy your plug plants now for your hanging baskets and containers, nurturing them until all sign of frost has gone. 5. Vegetable crops can be sown this month. Broad beans, early peas, carrots, leeks and salad crops are just a few. 6. Later in the month finish pruning roses and start spraying with fungicide to protect against black spot and mildew. Repeat every two weeks until the autumn. Remember, do not put any affected leaves in your compost. Our next meeting is on Monday 21 st March when we will be having an “in house” Q and A evening coupled with a garden book swop. Tuesday 12th April – Dragons in your Garden – a talk by Mike Philips. This illustrated talk will be held in Kingsdown School. Registration and free wine and nibbles will be from 7:30pm with the talk starting at 8pm. Members £3 and nonmembers £4. No need to book. Mike is the Amphibian Recording Project Officer for KRAG (the Kent Reptile and Amphibian Group). His talk will cover the reptiles and amphibians found in Kingsdown, what we can do to ensure they thrive and a little about how and why we should record sightings of them. Dates for you diaries: Tuesday 17th May – Butterflies of Kent and Tuesday 7th June – History of the Kent Coalfields. At our Committee Meeting on 10th February we agreed to fund two Marine Conservation Group Fishermen’s bins if we can find volunteers prepared to empty them. Peter Cross reported that 87% of members had already renewed their subs with only 27 people still to renew (watch out, he knows who you are!). We will coordinate action with the Parish Council over the proposed removal of aggregate from the Goodwin Sands for the Dover Western Docks Revival. And finally, our Chair, Philip Evemy, indicated that he will be stepping down at our AGM on 18 th July. We are keen to hear from anybody who might be interested in taking over as Chair. Annie Martin.
