Hi All, Sadly, after two years of helping, Joe Wall, due to other commitments, has decided to resign from Rural Roundup. I would like to thank him for his input and valuable help and wish him well with his new commitments. As you will see advertised elsewhere in this publication, Ringwould-w-Kingsdown Parish Council is organising an Open Gardens Event on Sunday 17th July please consider opening your garden, welcoming visitors and having a really good day. You don’t have to have a large garden and it doesn’t have to be perfect, just pretty! A map of gardens open will be included in July edition of Rural Roundup. It occurred to me when working on this February issue of Rural Roundup, that when the circulation covers seven villages. We hear very little about activities and events taking place from some of them. Is it that nothing much happens or is it, that information isn’t sent in? We would like to hear from you. We have a waiting list of people who wish to advertise. The feedback I get is that businesses consider the Rural Roundup is a good publication to be in. I would be loath to give any extra space to advertising as after all it is a ‘Community Information Publication’. I just can’t believe how mild the weather has been so far. Listening to the forecast this evening they are suggesting there may be a cold period to come. If this does turn out to be true, please don’t forget to keep an eye open for any elderly neighbours who may appreciate a little help. You don’t have to wait for bad weather though. Perhaps you may have an elderly neighbour living alone who finds it difficult putting out the bins or even may appreciate a chance just to have a chat with someone. Just a reminder that the next issue, March, will be the start of the seventh year of Rural Roundup. Anyone who kindly donates a small contribution, now is the time to think about it again. Donations can be given to your distributor who will pass it on, leave it at Kingsdown Post Office or push it through Cathy’s door. Oh well, that’s it from me except just to wish everyone all the best for the coming year. Regards, Doreen C. Editor:- Doreen Clark, Popinjay Balmoral Road, Kingsdown. By the time you read this the children will be back at school, hard at work and half way through the Spring term. At the end of the Christmas term we said goodbye to ‘Madame’ Hazel Sheikh, who has left the school to take a full time position as a MFL (modern foreign languages) teacher at Sir Roger Manwoods. Mrs Sheikh has been associated with Kingsdown & Ringwould School for over ten years as parent, governor and teacher. Her enthusiasm for French has inspired and motivated a generation of children and we will miss her greatly. I am sure you will join with us in wishing Hazel all the best for the future. Our sporting teams have been really busy over recent months some of our successes include: The boy’s football team getting to the finals of the McCarthy Cup, the boys football team are still in the Crickson Cup and Hammond Cup tournaments and are doing very well in their league. The girl’s football team have performed well at one day tournaments and are about to start their league fixtures. The cross country running team took part in an event at Detling, all the children gave a fantastic performance with great results. The basketball team took part in a one day tournament and managed to finish fourth overall against many Dover and Deal Primary Schools. The athletics team won the Dover District Sportshall Athletics competition and now progress to represent the Dover District in the County finals in February. The Infants took part in a multi skill event at St Margaret’s Primary and they finished second overall. Jo Hygate

Tea and Chat meets this month on Thursday 4th February at 2pm in the church social space. Homemade cakes and a cuppa not to mention a good chat! £1. Why not come along?

ST NICHOLAS 100 CLUB

We have now started a new year, more people are needed if we are to make this year as successful as last year, when over £400 was given out as PRIZES, and we funded two thirds of a tank of oil for the church. If you would like to join, email jean.winn@gmail.com or phone 361 030 and I will arrange to call. Jean St Nicholas Festive Tea 5th December 2015 Despite the dreadful weather a good number of visitors came to the Church in Ringwould to celebrate the Feast of St Nicholas with tea and festive cake. We were pleased to receive three beautifully decorated trees from Ringwould Readers, Tea and Chat and the WI - a close run competition with Tea and Chat winning by a narrow margin! The event raised £150.00 which will go into the Friends Fund to be spent as appropriate need occurs. A reminder that the Friends of St Nicholas support the fabric of our beautiful Church in Ringwould; if you are interested in becoming a Friend, forms are available in the Church, or on the website www.ringwouldchurch.com. Thank you to those who supported us with the provision of cakes or attendance on the day. Frances Evison and Sarah Spanner

Volunteer Tree Warden wanted for Kingsdown and Ringwould villages,

to keep an eye on our many delightful local trees, some on public land, some on private land (by invitation) and make recommendations where appropriate. Main qualifications: Enthusiasm! An interest in trees and tree husbandry and some identification skills The PC can send the warden on a tree warden course to brush up skills, and find out how to go about making recommendations. The last Kent Men of Trees inspection of Kingsdown and Ringwould resulted in a Highly Commended certificate, but the recommendation was that an active tree warden would result in higher scores. Further enquiries and the last report available from the Parish Clerk. Katie Amaouche 01304 729 081

Dear Friends I do hope that everyone had a fantastic Christmas and Happy New Year. It seems such a long time ago, doesn’t it – the angels, shepherds, wise men, carols and the babe in the manger - especially as Easter eggs have been in the shops since Boxing Day! So often I hear comments that the Bible is not relevant today, and that it doesn’t speak to today’s society – but I believe that it is bang up-todate. After the shepherds and wise men had gone back home, Mary, Joseph and their new baby Jesus, had to flee for their lives from a military regime intent on killing the little baby. The family fled to Egypt – to live as refugees. Does it sound a familiar story? Just before Christmas, The Bishop of Dover visited the migrant camp near Calais known as ‘the Jungle’ and reflected on his experience as he launched the Diocese’s Advent Justice Appeal. Describing the pitiful provision for refugees, flimsy accommodation and hostile treatment by authorities, Bishop Trevor launched the fund with a personal donation of £1,000, which was matched by the Most Rev Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury. Bishop Trevor said: “The Diocese’s geographical situation as the gateway to Europe and to England means that we meet the issues surrounding migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in varying ways,” he said. “I am grateful to all those already deeply involved in these matters. We are working closely with other agencies to get a clear picture of the work that is being done – and of what further is required.” He concluded: “We believe that all human beings are unique and loved by God, yet we tolerate situations where people are treated as sub-human. We must not turn a blind eye to the suffering on our doorstep as desperate people take desperate measures to reach safety. It is my intention to keep on visiting Calais – not to embarrass the Government, nor to make anyone feel guilty – but because we have an obligation to affirm that every refugee is a human being of great worth.” God came to earth as a tiny baby to share in all that we experience – all the joy and sorrow, finally to be crucified for us so that we might be saved. 10th February is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent – a time to reflect on the things that we shouldn’t have done and the things that we should have done – but chose not to. If Mary, Joseph and their tiny baby arrived here, in one of our parishes what sort of welcome would they receive? If the family lived in one of the besieged towns in Syria, would we be willing to help? Jesus said: “what you do for least of these, you do for me.” If you would like more information about helping refugees or would like to get involved, the Canterbury Diocese Communities and Partnerships team has created a Refugee Toolkit, detailing ways in which people can respond to the refugee crisis which can be accessed at: www.canterburydiocese.org/refugee-crisis-five-ways-torespond/ Donations can also be made online, by text message (text BTAA65 and the amount to 70070) or by cheque, made payable to CDBF, with “Justice Appeal” written on the back and sent to Advent Justice Appeal, Diocesan House, Lady Wootton’s Green, Canterbury, CT1 1NQ. Yours in Christ, Cathy

The Parochial Church Council for St John’s Church are hoping to have reframed and re hung the two rolls which have not been displayed in the church for some years. There is a little conservation work to be done and, of course, the cost of the frames themselves. If you or your family were christened there between 1949 and 1972 and are featured on them, we wonder whether you would like to contribute to the cost of about £200. If you would like to help, please contact Elizabeth Bembridge 374 630 or Email:- elizabethbembridge@gmail.com. St John’s Heritage Association, Kingsdown We thank all who supported us at our events over the last year, the Heritage Association being considered the principle fund-raising vehicle for St John’s Church. In 2015 we presented three main events, the Summer Concert in June that raised £411, the Last Night of the Proms in September that raised £726 and the Christmas Market & Fashion Show in November that raised a further £496. In all these three events raised a net total of £1,633. This money will go towards the restoration of the stainedglass windows and the repair of the bell tower. Since the Heritage Association was formed in 2013 we have raised through, membership fees, donations and events a total of £5,230. The restoration of the church is a never-ending project and we are very appreciative of your contribution to the funds of our Association. We will announce the events for 2016 in the next issue of Rural Roundup and look forward to your continued support, but in the meantime if anyone would like to become a member of our Association, it is just £10 pa, please contact me on 01304 373 331 or dobby@golfclubsec.co.uk and I will send you the details. If you walk your dog in this area, please Clean up after it. This is a nasty health hazard, in a designated child’s recreation area. ( I cleared it up, and put in the litter bin up there) Cllr. Happy New Year from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council! Some issues that were raised at the 5th January 2016 Council Meeting: 

Kent County Council had visited the Parish regarding pot holes and that work would be commencing shortly to fill them, this would include some temporary road closures in the Parish.

The Parish Council finalised the precept for the coming financial year and the paperwork will be completed once received.

It was suggested that a pump may be obtained to help residents out during the current weather situation. The Council will consider this option and report back at the next meeting.

DDC Cllr Manion informed members that Kent Highways and Kent Fire and Rescue had attended areas within the Parish to help out with the flooding.

It was noted that the salt bin behind the bench in Studdal was missing, the Clerk will request a new bin from Kent Highways.

The Chair and the Clerk will be attending the Annual Town and Parishes event at Dover District Council in January.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Tuesday 2 nd February 2016 at Studdal Church Hall at 7.30pm. Katie Amaouche, Clerk to the Council

conditions, ice or snow underfoot, or even very windy conditions, please be a good neighbour. Our parishes have many elderly residents, some living alone, and some of these will need help this winter. Please check that your neighbours are OK, and offer help as necessary - shopping, post, collecting medicines, and a little time for a neighbourly chat.

Kingsdown and Ringwould WI Secretary Linda Dalton Email: lindadalton4@gmail.com

Our 2016 meetings started on a bright note as our speaker Avril Woolf, one of our members, gave us a fascinating look behind the scenes of her years involved in amateur dramatics. When Avril first joined the Dover Operatics Society they had no theatre in which to put on their productions and so performed at the Dover Town Hall. In the absence of changing rooms the lady artistes used the Mayor’s Chamber or Courtroom and the gentlemen players had to change in the dungeons! We were pleased to welcome two new members and one visitor who is also joining us. We discussed a forthcoming visit to the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners, and combining this with a visit to the Physics Garden. Our next meeting will be on Monday 8th February at 2.00pm at Kingsdown Village Hall where our speaker will be Geoff Turner and the subject is the 1926 Cross Channel Swim. Lisa Souter Today is the 4th January, a grey overcast, damp winter’s day after the bright unseasonably mild weather we had prior to and over the Christmas period when everybody was out walking along the front with smiles on their faces. We had a super Christmas followed by a good New Year. I hope you enjoyed the festive season and New Year as much as we did. The shortest day has come and gone, the Christmas decorations are back in the loft and the plants are very confused and don’t know quite what they should be doing. In mid-December, in memory of my late sister we planted a bare rooted David Austin Rose (called Janet) in a large pot. We cannot believe the new growth that has emerged. The back garden lawn is looking very sad as are other areas in the garden. The decking adjacent to the summer house is lethal; you walk on it at your peril as it’s so slippery. Has anyone out there used anti slip paint? If so was it any good or is there some other solution? I know, “get rid of it and lay a patio” I hear you say. Just thinking about it makes me realise I have this love-hate relationship with the garden. At the moment I see anything new as more work, a very negative thought which will persist until the days are longer and warmer. Thanks to Sue Lamoon we have a very good programme ahead for 2016. The next three months are as follows: Monday 29 February - Quentin Spark will be giving a talk entitled: “Hole Park through the seasons, plus snowdrop varieties. Monday 21 March – An in-house Q & A session plus garden book swop. Monday 25 April – Barry Newman will be talking about vegetables. To start 2016, I continue to wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year. A preliminary, text-only version of the long-awaited Kingsdown Conservation Area Appraisal has been published by DDC at www.dover.gov.uk and KCG’s recommended extension of the Area and inclusion of an Article 4 Direction are about to go out to public consultation. Membership secretary Peter Cross (239 928) thanks all members who have already paid their subscriptions for 2016, and invites those who have yet to renew, or who wish to join for the first time, to complete and post their form in our box in the Post Office. Concern has been expressed about tree clearance along Undercliffe Road on the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This part of the beach is within the boundary of Kingsdown Holiday Park, and the work must be undertaken strictly in accordance with a Consent Order issued by Natural England. The main work was completed before Christmas and it is understood that clearance of debris and treatment of regrowth will take place this spring. A barrier may also be installed to prevent vehicles accessing the beach. Queries or concerns should be addressed to Phil Williams, Natural England, International House, Dover Place, Ashford TN23 1HU.
