Hi All, Yes it’s me again. I did think I was going to get a little break but that was only wishful thinking. I will keep my piece short and sweet this month, especially as space is at a premium because it is a double issue.. So I will take this opportunity to wish you all A Very Happy Christmas and Best Wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year. Speak to you again in February. Doreen

KINGSDOWN CAROL SINGING

Once again it is time for carol singing around Kingsdown. We welcome everyone to join us for this lovely tradition. There are no auditions, no rehearsals. Just turn up and sing. It is good fun. Wrap up warmly, bring a torch and we'll provide the carol sheets. This year we are starting at 6pm at the weekend and at 6.30pm on week nights (but you can join us later further along the route) and finishing by 8.30pm. All money collected will be divided between The Church Fabric Fund and The Mission to Seafarers. Donations may be left at Kingsdown Post Office. Looking forward to seeing you Sylvia (373 651) and Dinah (373 176) Date

Kingsdown Pre-school’s Bier Fest is back!

After a year off, we’re back! Kingsdown Pre-school’s much loved Bier Fest will take place in the New Year. Back by popular demand, the night will once again be led in fine style by local Oompah band the Bettesteiner Footstompers. We are also very pleased to announce that The Burger Brothers will be serving up their “Herman ze German” authentic Black Forest pork Vienna Frankfurter housed in a pretzel bun and topped with sauerkraut and crispy onions, plus fries. Tickets are priced at a suggested donation of £20, which includes all your beer, wine, food, entertainment and disco. The school hall will be decked out in true Bavarian style on Saturday 16th January 2016 from 7.30pm. So dust off your lederhosen and buy your tickets soon to avoid disappointment! To buy tickets, please contact Anna Taylor on 07870 215 250, seek out a Pre-school committee member on the school runs or e-mail info@kingsdownpreschool.org.uk. Profits raised from the 2016 Bier Fest will go towards new IT equipment for the Pre-school.

Friends of Kingsdown Play Park May Day Fete Sunday 1st May 2016

Many of us have fond memories of maypole dancing, homemade jam, beer tents and the coconut shy! Therefore, Friends of Kingsdown Play Park are organising a traditional village fete to be held at Kingsdown Park on Sunday 1st May 2016 from 12-3pm. We want to organise an event that will bring all members of the community together. A fete would be a fantastic opportunity for all village groups to raise awareness and much needed funds. It will also offer the opportunity for local craft businesses and food producers to sell their products. A number of village community groups have expressed support for the event and the Parish Council have given their approval. Please get in touch if you would like to help out with the event in any way. We’re looking for volunteers to help on the day, local businesses to sponsor the event or advertise in the fete programme. We’re also in need of raffle prizes for the prize draw. If you wish to make any kind of contribution or would like to find out more about the fete contact Amanda Jacques via email friendsofkingsdownplaypark@gmail.com

Highlights of the meeting held on Monday 9th November 2015 Public Participation: Mr Nick Thistle, local Community Warden Manager, attended to introduce Mr Martin Dadd, the newly appointed Community Warden for Ringwould and Kingsdown. Sarah Gleave, Local Women’s Energy Champion Network, advised of a workshop to be held on 8th January at Kingsdown Primary School for advice on cost savings for gas and electricity. Cllr Sue le Chevalier (DCC) reported on fly tipping near Kingsdown Public Toilets and parking problems around Kingsdown Primary School. Cllr Steve Manion (KCC) reported the traffic 20 mph project continues to move forward. Mrs L Dennison and Mrs Charlotte Jones, FoKPP, reported on fundraising and a new installation plan to reduce costs of the overall project, the Parish Council will consider and meet with FoKPP to review. Highways - Cllr Hansom attended the KCC Parish Seminar for autumn 2015 and met the KCC Team. KCC has confirmed that it may be possible to implement a 20mph zone in Kingsdown. It was resolved that if no funds were available from the KCC Combined Members Fund, the Parish Council will proceed with the Traffic Regulation Order at its own expense. The Parish Council would then seek a contribution to the cost of signage from the Combined Members Fund next financial year. Negotiations regarding the repair of Oldstairs Road are in progress; we are waiting to hear from the various stakeholders. Communications Strategy – a new process for agenda protocol was agreed. The refreshing of the website is going well with many new pages created. Updates and new pages will continue and we will advise when the refreshmennt is complete in Rural Round Up and on our noticeboards. Environment and Amenities – Keeping the Parish Clean campaign continues, and a meeting is scheduled with Kingsdown Primary School. Recommendations from the ROSPA annual maintenance review and a new project to review the maintenance schedule and specification of the parish recreation grounds were both approved. Weekly inspections of Ringwould and Kingsdown play areas by several trained councillors commenced from November, reducing costs for the Parish Council. Footpaths – ER3 St Monica Road/ER2 Kings Close/Climdown, the steps are in need of urgent repair. This has been reported continually to KCC, who advised the work schedule is out to tender. The Parish Council will request KCC to close the area until the repair work is completed as the condition is extremely dangerous. A note of thanks has been received from St Nicholas Church, Ringwould and St John’s Church, Kingsdown for the participation and the laying of the remembrance wreaths from the Parish Council on Sunday 8th November. It was reported that rumours had been circulating about the future of Kingsdown Post Office. The Parish Council has no knowledge of the current situation, other than a letter it sent to the General Post Office whole-heartedly supporting keeping a Post Office in Kingsdown. The outcome is totally dependent on the parties concerned and the Parish Council stands neutral. The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday December 14th at Kingsdown Village Hall commencing at 7.30 pm. All residents are very welcome.

Remembrance Day Service as Kingsdown unveils memorial to Sqd Ldr Anthony Downing On Remembrance Sunday, St. John’s Church welcomed The Rt. Revd. Trevor Willmot, Bishop of Dover who led our service of Remembrance. Bishop Trevor also blessed the Bastion Cross that was given to St. John’s by Michael, Masheeda and David Downing, and unveiled the new plaque on our war memorial in memory of Anthony. The church was packed and it was standing room only as many gathered for the service. Many of Ant’s colleagues and friends also joined us, some even travelling from as far as Scotland. The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts did a wonderful job. They are truly a credit not only to themselves and their uniforms, but to Kingsdown as well. We were delighted to welcome Simon Godden from Dover Grammar School, who kindly volunteered to play the bugle for us. Thank you to everyone who helped to make it such a very special day, those who took part in the service, those who helped to set up the church before, and, last but certainly not least, the ladies who provided refreshments for everyone after the service. Thank you. Cathy

On Thursday 15th October the girl’s football team played in the McCarthy Cup at St Faiths School in Ash. There were 12 schools taking part. The girls performed really well and played five matches. They won two, drew two and lost one. They finished third after the points were tallied and just missed out on playing in the finals. This was an amazing team effort and the first time the team has played together. Congratulations to Euan and Tom in Year 6 for getting invited to take part in County Football trials. Jo Hygate By the time you read this, the school and children will be part way through the term and beginning their preparations for the Christmas festivals. All of the usual events have been planned, including our Christmas Fayre which will take place on Friday 4th December from 3.15pm to 5.30pm. Come along and support your village school. Jo Hygate

All Things Green

What a beautiful season autumn is. It brings us the harvest of fruits, stunning autumnal colours and, of course, conkers! The school held their annual conker competition, with over 50 children entering. With slightly altered rules, (we would still be playing today if the traditional rules were used), three heats were undertaken across the school, resulting in three conker champions. Fun was had by all who took part. By the time this article goes into print, plans to regain our Eco School green flag will have been put in place. We have received this award on two previous occasions and hope that the flag will soon be flying once again. Unfortunately, we have received notice that the rag bank will be removed due to the expense of collecting the clothing, as the company is based in Scotland. The rag bank has been a huge success over the years, providing a service to the community and raising funds for the school, which have been used to sponsor environmental equipment and projects, such as an egg incubator and visits from organisations including an indoor planetarium and Kent Wildlife Trust. We will, hopefully, be replacing the bank, but in the meantime we are unable to use the existing one with immediate effect. The school still provides recycling for batteries and ink cartridges. Environmental activities continue to be undertaken through either the curriculum or organised events. Last year, the school held a ‘power-off day’ which involved reducing the use of electricity for the whole day. It is an event we hope to run again. The ‘walk to school’ scheme is regularly held, in which children are encouraged to use their legs instead of wheels! It is hoped that we will be able to have the Kent County Council WEEE (electrical waste) skip again next year, which proved so successful previously. We hope that the green flag will soon be flying high again over the school.

******************************************** It has come around to Christmas again so a chance to reflect on the year. Finally the plans to redevelop the centre of Dover are happening and Burlington House is in the process of being demolished. This has taken a long time and has been delayed by false starts. We believe the eventual result will be the best for the district. Other plans are underway and it seems like the district is in the middle of a growth spurt. With the troubles in Syria the council is seeking to play its part in the humanitarian aid programme and participate in housing a number of refugees from the camps. Dear Friends

“…The time came for Mary’s baby to be born; and she gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn.” So often at this time of year I see advertising campaigns that say “Let’s put Christ back into Christmas”. But quite honestly how can we celebrate “Christ-mas” without Christ? For many, Christmas is a wonderful, almost magical time of the year, but in a recent poll, 52% of the population have no idea why they celebrate Christmas! If that is the case then why on earth do we, as a nation, spend on average some £868 each – if 52% of us don’t know why we are spending it? Just over 2,000 years ago, God came down to be with us here on earth, in the form of the baby Jesus, to experience exactly what it was like to be one of us. But why decide to come to us in the form of a tiny, helpless baby, when he could have chosen to be anyone? And He really didn’t seem to have a very promising start in life either, born, to a young unmarried Mum, in a stable with all the animals round about. Then, Mum, Joseph and the baby become refugees as they flee for their lives. I don’t know about you, but it sounds a very familiar story – not just the nativity story from the Bible, but the story of so many families who are fleeing for their lives from Syria and Afghanistan today. 2,000 years later, but still the same story. So rather than living a life of luxury and wealth, God chose to be one of those who lived on the outside. Perhaps He wanted to see how His fellow human beings would treat Him and his parents and to see how people would respond to His family in their particular situation. And how do we respond to those who have been forced to leave everything behind them – just as Mary and Joseph and their baby Jesus had to do? If Mary and Joseph arrived here, how would we greet them? Would we welcome them into our homes, give them food, drink, clothing and shelter – or would we just shut the door in their faces and say “Sorry, no room for the likes of you here!” Perhaps this Christmas you can consider giving to one of the many Christmas charities that support those who are on their own, have nowhere to live or won’t have a Christmas lunch without our help and support. You may just be able to give someone the Christmas that they will always remember – and for the right reasons. Jesus, both God and man, born to be our Saviour said: “What you do for the least of these, you do for me.” One of the hymns we sing each Christmas is O come, O come Emmanuel. Emmanuel means “God is with us” and that is my prayer for each and every one of us – and not just for Christmas, but for life. I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Yours in Christ

Clerk:- Katie Amaouche, Inglewood, Dover Road, Ringwould CT14 8BP Tel:- 01304 729 081 Email: suttonbydoverpc@g.mail.com Chairman: Barbara Merriman, Email: merriman619@btinternet.com www.Suttonbydoverpckentparishes.gov.uk

Herewith are a few points that were covered at the November Parish Council Meeting: 

Cllr Merriman had been dealing with Kent County Council regarding flooding in the parish and has been advised that drain cleansing work would soon be taking place.

Members considered the draft budget for 2016/17 and will approve the budget at next month’s meeting after a few adjustments are made.

It was agreed that the crossroads at Romans Road and Homestead Lane were very dangerous and the Clerk has emailed KCC Highways to request a site visit.

The Clerk attended the Transparency for Smaller Councils course and found it very informative.

The Highways and Transportation survey has been completed and has been sent to Kent County Council.  The abandoned vehicle is still in situ in the parish but is taxed and has a valid MOT so there is nothing more the Parish Council can do regarding this. The next meeting of the parish Council takes place on December 1st 2015 at 7.30pm at Studdal Church Hall. The Parish Council wish all residents a very Merry Christmas! Katie Amaouche, Clerk to the Council SUTTON PCC 100 CLUB

December’s draw will be a bonus draw. Subscriptions need to be renewed for 2016 so please contact me tel :372 856 or email: maggic1@hotmail.co.uk The more members we have, the greater the prizes so do remember to tell your family and friends and encourage them to join. Wishing you all a very joyful Christmas and a healthier, wealthier New Year and many thanks for all your support.. Maggie

Winter help - be a good neighbour—In winter, especially in poor weather

conditions, ice or snow underfoot, or even very windy conditions, please be a good neighbour. Our parishes have many elderly residents, some living alone, and some of these will need help this winter. Please check that your neighbours are OK, and offer help as necessary - shopping, post, collecting medicines, and a little time for a neighbourly chat.

Kingsdown and Ringwould WI Secretary Linda Dalton Telephone:- 371 041 Email: lindadalton4@gmail.com Dennis Chambers told us some scary stories of the paranormal that he had encountered throughout his life as a policeman in various parts of the country. A good job it was still daylight when we walked home! It was Jenny Wall’s first meeting as president (did she need the scary talk, I wonder?); she introduced the new committee to us. Jenny talked about the importance of communication, recognising that some members do not have access to the internet, and reassuring them that a paper newsletter will be available, and will indeed be delivered if necessary! Members are asked to make suggestions for outings for fun, and activities of an educational nature. A letter of thanks from Liz Bembridge, for gifts she received at our last meeting, was read out...it ended with an inevitable limerick ...how many poets are there amongst us? Christmas is rapidly approaching, December means lunch at the Golf Club.....for over 60 of us; an East Kent Federation day out to Borough Market and Covent Garden Market....very popular. I’m not sure either market is ready for the 400 WI members who are booked to descend on them! There is a Carol Service, and a Christmas Tree Festival and of course the Members’ Party at our next meeting in Ringwould Hall at 2pm on 14th December. We wish everyone a happy, healthy and blessed Christmas. We look forward to more exciting events in the New Year. We hope you will join us! Christine Smith The Garden decluttering is still on-going; another bed that was becoming very untidy and unsightly has been cleared, with the ground left to settle for a while. This has now been laid with turf and it’s quite amazing how this has opened up that particular section of the garden. I am not sure when the best time to lay turf is but with all the rain we have had it’s looking very established already. As I am writing this I can hear some rather noisy fireworks going off outside which only goes to remind me that the daylight hours are getting shorter and shorter – how depressing. We have been instructed by our lovely family what is going to happen this Christmas. When the children were younger we did all the organising but now they have children of their own we go with the flow. Having said that, we are looking forward to our family and grandchildren getting together. A good excuse to go OTT with the decorations. Do we get a real tree or stick with the artificial one? Another major decision to be made. I am sure a glass of wine or two will help clarify our thoughts! By the time you read this we will have had our annual Christmas party. I am sure, as always, it will have been a very enjoyable evening with good company, good food, some silly games and a few glasses! Ho Ho Ho. Seriously, if you think you would like to come and join the committee and get involved, please contact me on sylvandrob@outlook.com or call 01304 363 363. We can always do with some extra help. The programme for the start of 2016 is as follows: Monday 25 January – Sally Berkeley will be giving a talk on “The Victorian Kitchen Garden” Monday 29 February - Quentin Spark will be talking about “Hole Park through the season” plus snowdrop varieties. Monday 21 March – An in-house Q and A session plus a garden book swop. It just leaves me to close for 2015 wishing you a very happy Christmas and most importantly a healthy New Year. Bob Perry

During the past year, KCG has supported Kingsdown village and conservation organisations in a number of different ways: We have launched a new website with events calendar for use by all organisations in the village, arranged interesting talks and visits for members and friends, researched, written and designed the Conservation Area Appraisal for adoption by Dover District Council, sponsored the Community Survey, the annual Garage Safari, the village Christmas tree and lights, and hanging baskets in the centre of the village. We have continued to sponsor bulb planting around the village, and thank all those who helped Deborah Longland by planting bulbs in around a dozen different locations. We have also made donations to Kent Wildlife Trust, Marine Conservation Society and Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory. We wish everyone in the village a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we look forward to enjoying your support and involvement again in 2016
