Highlights of the meeting held on Monday 14th September 2015 A presentation for Front Gardens in Bloom preceded the meeting and was attended by prize winners and residents. Cllr Doreen Clark thanked everyone for their contribution to this competition, Fraser Greenwell our independent judge stated standards were very high. Next year it is planned to hold the competition in late June, and also introduce a Parish Open Garden Day. Proposal to reduce speed limits throughout the villages – we have arranged for DCC to install a traffic speed assessment in Kingsdown in late September to capture information to support this initiative. Cllr Nick Jackaman will join the Friends of Kingsdown Play Park as a representative of the council. Councillors agreed to have training and take on play area weekly inspections thus reducing costs. FoKPP has been awarded a grant of up to £10K for play equipment and permission to stage a fundraising May Day event at the Play Park. Communications Strategy – refreshing the website and noticeboards, new style headed paper, agendas and minutes are all in hand. A working group has been set up to help with environment and amenities opportunities within the Parish. The E&A Working Group will address these opportunities by establishing projects and will be asking for the support from residents to enable the success of these projects. The first of such projects has been agreed and will be known as ‘Keeping Our Parish Clean’. Recently the Parish Council have received comments and complaints on litter, dog fouling and horse fouling in some areas of the parish. We should like to remind residents that it is permissible to use any litter bin to dispose of bagged dog waste not just the red dog waste bins. Dog waste in not only unpleasant and a nuisance but it can cause serious disease in children which can result in blindness. Dover District Council is initiating a scheme where owners whose dogs are seen fouling the pavements, footpaths and beach will be subject to on the spot fines. The measure is not punitive but is aimed at raising awareness and inducing changed behaviour. It is hoped that the project ‘Keeping Our Parish Clean’ will also help raise awareness and induce changed behaviour for some of the residents and visitors regarding litter and dog fouling. The project will include a poster campaign and well as ‘Clean Up’ litter days, supported by DCC. Although the Parish Council employ two people to regular pick up litter, who do an excellent job, if you know of an area within the Parish that you feel would benefit from a ‘Clean Up’ day please contact the Parish Clerk. We hope you will volunteer and join with us to make a difference and remove litter from designated areas within our parish. We intend to contact our local primary school and other youth organisations, with an idea of a youth designed ‘Keep Our Parish Clean’ poster. In addition we will contact the Kingsdown Holiday Park, Camp site and local liveries to review ‘Keeping Our Parish Clean’ and to involve them. More information of locations and dates of ‘Clean Up’ days will follow soon. Thank you for support! Bin it! Scoop it! Keeping Our Parish Clean! If you have a particular area of concern please contact:- Katie Amaouche, Clerk to the Parish Council. The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 12th October at Kingsdown Village Hall commencing at 7.30 pm. All residents are very welcome..

A Special Careers Fair A special careers fair to inspire young people in east Kent to make their future in health and social care is taking place next month. The event, at the Dover Cruise Terminal on Wednesday 14th October, has been organised by NHS South Kent Coast Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) on behalf of the NHS and social care in east Kent. It is supported by Education Business Partnership Kent. Students from years 9 to 13 (13 to 18-year-olds) have been invited to the day, which starts at 9.30am, and more than 500 have already signed up. Dr Darren Cocker, the Clinical Chair of NHS South Kent Coast CCG, said: “The young people of east Kent represent our future, and we want to make sure that their ability and talent are harnessed and encouraged. Health and social care in east Kent have a great deal to offer – and so do our local students. “When choosing a career, many young people may not be aware of the exciting and rewarding opportunities that exist in the caring professions. That’s why events like the careers fair are so important – because they can stimulate new ideas and introduce students to openings they may be unaware of. “Once a student has their heart set on a particular career path, it gives focus and helps them to maintain a sense of direction.” Information will be on offer at the fair about an array of job opportunities, including social care, dentistry, pharmacy, pathology and medicine. The young people will be able to find out about non-clinical NHS and social care careers too – such as finance, IT and management. Representatives from further and higher education organisations – including Canterbury College, Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Greenwich – will be at the event. Anne McNulty, the Chief Executive of Education Business Partnership Kent said: “This event promises high impact to all those young people attending from schools across Kent. To have the chance to speak to the professionals and see the tremendous range of skills and expertise required across the whole NHS, will be enlightening and highly motivating. The event will focus in particular on the variety of routes to successful progression.” 15

Dear Friends The Festival of Errors – or – It’s ok to fail! Some of the most important medical discoveries of our time were the result of a mistake. Lifesavers like the smallpox vaccine and penicillin were unexpected results of people experimenting and looking for quite different results. A group of people in Paris felt this principle was so important that a few years ago they made it the foundation of a festival. “The Festival of Errors” set out to teach children it was OK to fail. These people were concerned that the learning environment in which French children grow up doesn’t allow them to make mistakes, and, by making mistakes, to cultivate flexibility of mind, problem-solving abilities and self-confidence. To create an environment where mistakes are not possible, they argued, is to make learning more difficult and to close down all kinds of possibilities that might emerge in a messier approach. Jesus’ disciples, would, I feel sure, have approved of such a festival and would have joined in whole heartedly as they were always making mistakes! Even though they had spent, what today would be called “quality-time” with their Lord and Master, they so often just didn’t get the point. They just didn’t understand who Jesus was – at least not at first. They didn’t even get it when he calmed storms, walked on water, fed the 5,000 or brought the dead back to life. But Jesus remained calm and showed great patience with his motley crew and they for their part persevered to explore all possibilities and eventually, the penny dropped. This person that they had been travelling with, eating with and sharing stories with, was the Messiah. He was the Saviour of the world, come to be one of us here on this earth and come to save us. Today, Christianity is the largest religion in the world with over two billion followers around the world – i.e. nearly a third of the global population. In Britain today, some 42 million people describe themselves as Christian, and there are 6 million who are actively practising. But what would have happened if The Disciples had just given up and walked away the first time that they got things wrong? If they had just given up because they didn’t understand? The disciples were a rather motley crew, but they – even though they made mistakes – continued to ask questions and to explore new possibilities and were the founders of the Christian faith, which we know today spread right across the globe. So I hope that this is an encouragement to anyone who may be trying to achieve something, but hasn’t quite got there yet. You may not even achieve what you set out to do, you may achieve even more! And like Jesus’ 12 Disciples, you just never know what you can achieve if you don’t give up and are not afraid to “have another go” if you don’t get it right the first time. Every blessing to you all, Yours in Christ, Cathy 21

Save the Children helps the poorest children at home and abroad get a better start in life and teh chance to grow up and follow their dreams. The money raised by Save the Children goes direct to the workers in the field. For every £1 raised for the charity, 1p goes on governance, 11p goes on raising the next £1 and 88p goes directly to deprived children. Save the Children is one of the 14 charities that make up the Disasters' Emergency Committee and so respond every time there is an emergency. It's been over two months since earthquakes hit Nepal. Save the Children has reached thousands of people providing clean water, food and emergency shelter. With the impending monsoon rains expected to isolate remote villages, Save the Children will continue to prioritize shelter materials. Save the Children has set up 270 temporary learning centres for children so they don't miss essential schooing. Save the Children also helps deprived families here in the U.K. Many families lack basic household items such as beds, bedding or essential cooking items. Save the Children gives grants to such families. The Save the Children can only continue with its work thanks to your generosity. Sarah Spong (Chair Deal Branch) scdeal.org/home

L/Corpl Henry C. Friend

6th Battalion (Service) Royal East Kent Regiment (Buffs) Born 1890 Died 19th August 1915 Henry was born and schooled in Kingsdown and worked in the village prior to joining the Army in September 1914.His family lived at Oak Leigh in Upper Street. Henry became part of Kitchener’s K1 or the ‘First 100,000’. He trained at Purfleet and Aldershot and embarked from Folkestone for Boulogne in France in June 1915. In July 1915 his battalion, part of the 12th Division, began further training in the trenches to the south of Ploegsteert in Belgium. Here they were mentored by more experienced soldiers in trench warfare. Though considered a quiet sector of the front soldiers were still killed and wounded on a daily basis and Henry became one of the daily casualties. Henry is buried in the Calvaire Cemetery just behind the trenches his Battalion occupied and he is buried with others of his Battalion. 27

At the September Parish Council Meeting Councillors, members of the public and Dover District Councillor Steve Manion welcomed the new Clerk Mrs Katie Amaouche and wished her success in her new role. At the WI Meeting in September the speakers were representatives from Carers’ Support based in Deal. They explained the full extent of help they give to carers at all times. They also now have support staff who visit the local hospitals to assist in the care of dementia patients. Carers’ Support hold coffee mornings and have drop-in sessions. The vast range of assistance they can give impressed us. We also celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the WI and all enjoyed a slice of celebration cake baked and decorated by Barbara Brooker, one of our members. The next meeting will be on Monday 12th October at 2.00pm in Kingsdown Village Hall and is the Annual Meeting when members elect the committee for the following year. We hope that as many members as possible can attend. As usual the outgoing committee will be providing tea and cakes! Lisa Souter What a wash-out August was, rain of almost biblical proportions. It left the garden looking bedraggled, overgrown and unloved, but thank goodness September, as it so often does, arrived with the sun shining, feeling reasonably warm and very little rain. What a dramatic change – the world seems a better place. The Head Gardener and I have worked hard to get the garden back into shape. The secateurs and loppers have been put to good use. Today is Wednesday 9th September, a beautiful sunny early autumn day. We are meeting friends in Bearsted for lunch at the White Horse later. It certainly is a tough life when you are retired! The annual show on the 23rd August was the success we had been hoping for. Thank you all for the early return of the entry forms in such large numbers. It certainly helped with the processing of competitor cards. The judges were very impressed with the high standard of the entries across the various classes. Our thanks also to the ladies of the Post Office who once again displayed the show schedules for sale. We are so lucky to have this facility in the village – long may we keep it! The programme for the rest of 2015 is: 26th October – AGM – Please read your copy of the proposed Constitution as we will be voting on it. 30th November – Christmas Party Keep healthy and be careful out there!
