Hello everyone, This edition covers July and August so please note the closing date for the September issue is Wednesday 12th August. As I have said before it is VERY important that the copy is not received by the closing date advertised each month otherwise we cannot guarantee it will be included. I have mentioned before, that It would help greatly if copy is sent in as a word document , using a font no larger than 12pt, and if a picture or logo is included please send it as a Jpeg. You cannot imagine the time wasted if it is sent in as an A4 flyer and needs altering to fit the space available. I am glad to say I am progressing well after my knee operation, still using a walking stick whilst out and about but hopefully it will soon be discarded. The best part about it that I am driving once more. What a difference that makes! Even if you don’t live in Kingsdown or Ringwould you are cordially invited to join in the tour of the villages to look at the gardens on Sunday 13th September. The Kingsdown village hall will be open and will have programmes for sale on the day and the FKPP will be busy serving refreshments. All welcome. Don’t forget to let me know about any Sunflowers you are growing and report on their progress. Any photos will be very welcome. Do enjoy your summer holidays, let us hope for some decent weather. Look forward to speaking you again in September. All the best Ed. Editor:- Doreen Clark, Popinjay Balmoral Road, Kingsdown. Update on Parish Council Meeting held on Monday 15 June 2015 The highlights of the meeting are as follows: 1. An excellent presentation was received by Friends of Kingsdown Play Park, giving details of their consultation, analysis and fundraising and their recommendation of the design for the update of the Kingsdown Play Area. It was agreed that Friends of Kingsdown Play Park will submit a proposal and grant application to be agreed by the Parish Council at the next meeting. 2. Terms of Reference for the Planning Committee were agreed by all. The Planning Committee presented and recommended decisions on each planning application which were agreed by all. 3. It was agreed at the next Finance Committee to review expenses policy and procedure, review the number of banks used by the Council, review numbers of Council signatories and the review the amount that the Clerk is authorised to spend for contingences. 4.The Clerk will produce a monthly finance statement within the monthly agenda. 5.Considerable work has been carried out on several footpaths and works will continue. 6.Terms of Reference for the Environment and Amenities Working Party were agreed. 7. Research and work continues on 20 mph speed limits within the Parish. 8. All 41 allotments are allocated in Ringwould, a tree has been cut down within the allotment area which is to be investigated. 9. Gardens in Bloom has received a very positive response and it is the intention that this year the residents will be able to vote for “The Best Open Garden”, a new category. 10. Cllr Fowler was appointed as lead Councillor for Communications. The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 13th July at The Learning Opportunities Centre, Ringwould at 7.30 pm. All residents are very welcome. Minutes of each monthly meeting are approved at the following month’s meeting and then published on the website. Katie Amaouche, Clerk to the Parish Council. Kingsdown Community Survey Follow-up Following the election on May 7th we now have a new Parish Council, some of whom were members of the group who worked on producing the survey. Many of the issues raised in the survey are subjects that are best dealt with by the Parish Council and so the results have been given to the new PC. Obviously they are not able to tackle every issue immediately, or, in some cases, only with extra support and finance from other quarters. It is hoped that the results give them some picture of what is important to the residents of Kingsdown, particularly in the areas of traffic, transport, building and environment. However, most of the ideas and issues identified from the section covering social and community can really only be addressed by local residents in a voluntary capacity. Already a group of (mainly) mums are working on improving the play area by the school. Other community projects that could be developed include  Classes/workshops helping people improve their IT skills

  

Classes/workshops on aspects of needlecraft and art French, Spanish conversation groups

Anything to help the older members of our community BUT projects will only happen if ‘someone’ (or a few someones) volunteers to organise such things. If you feel able to start something off, even if it’s only at an informal get-together in a pub, please email kingsdownsurvey@gmail.com and we will put together like-minded people.

I (Mandi Blacker) was very lucky to win a vintage afternoon tea from The Vintage Elegance company on Facebook for myself and up to ten friends. I asked Sylvia Sims the owner if I could open this as a fundraiser in memory of my friend and neighbour Sue Rudge. She was more than happy and we set the date for a day in June. I worried that no one would turn up. This was totally unnecessary as true to our lovely community spirt we had lots of donations of over 70 raffle prizes and cakes. The total raised on the day was £796.40 and with further donations after the event, it has now risen to an amazing £1,025 for the Macmillan Nurses. I would like to thank everyone who donated, helped at the event and came and enjoyed the afternoon, it really was a team effort. Mandi Blacker & Lesley Killip (my wingman)

A poem by the late Betty Carter which a local resident wishes to share.

My Home Village Just a dot on the map ‘twixt Dover and Deal Is my little village of great appeal Kindness the watchword of this community Where young helps old without impunity Viper’s bugloss and valerian adorn our beach Yet poppy filled cornfields are within easy reach A butcher, a newsagent, a grocery store A post office, three pubs, who could ask for more A beautiful church overlooking the sea Bearing memories of those who used to be In Kingsdown blessed with everything Even wild violets in the spring By Betty Carter

The Deal & Walmer Handelian Choral Society Summer Concert The Deal and Walmer Handelian Choral Society has put together a joyful programme for their Summer Concert in July, including music by Vivaldi, Stanford and Schubert. The choir will be joined by soloists Maggie Bloor and Sabrina Curwen in Vivaldi’s uplifting Gloria, followed by Stanford’s grand Te Deum in B flat, and Schubert’s beautiful setting of The Lord is my Shepherd. The concert is at St Mary’s Church, Walmer on Saturday 25th July at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are £12 including a glass of wine in the interval, and are available from The Astor Theatre and the Visitor Information Centre in Deal, and at the door on the night. Summary of DDC display about Kingsdown beach groyne replacement, 28 and 30 May 2015. http://www.dover.gov.uk/Environment/Coast-Rivers/Coast Protection/Kingsdown Exhibition/Home.aspx the presentation can be downloaded from there, as a .pdf file The display put on by DDC at the primary school showed plans of the beach groynes, old and new, showing the new angle they will be built at. Work will start in September and last about 7 months (30 weeks). DDC wanted to wait till after the summer, The sustainable wood to be used, commonly known as Ironwood, has arrived and has been placed in a locked compound on the beach near Walmer castle. The contract has been awarded to a company called Wijma UK Ltd. Work will take place between the hours of 7am and 7pm, weekdays only, and dependent upon the tide times. There will be piling, other timber works, and also shingle will be taken from near Walmer beach and brought down by lorry, to the beach at Kingsdown along the sea shore line to reduce damage to the beach. The groynes /sea wall, originally built about 60 years ago have been repaired recently in 1997, 2002, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014. There are currently 14 groynes in Kingsdown, most of which are in a very poor condition. Some have almost completely failed. Despite the temporary repairs the beach material is able to move freely between the many of the bays. Based on the current rate of erosion, if no action was taken after a seawall failure, the Zetland Arms would be lost to the sea within 5 years, the first property would be lost in 10 years. 173 residential properties and 5 non residential properties would be lost in 30 years. Within a 100 years a total 196 residential and 5 non-residential properties would be lost. The new groynes will be realigned to work with the longitudinal drift. The Dept of Environment is paying for the program, cost of £1.8 million The minimum cost benefit ratio the Dof E will accept for flood defence work is 1:8. here in Kingsdown the cost benefit ratio is 1:18.5, meaning that for every £1 spent on defences, it could save £18.5 if there was severe flooding. Project management East Kent Engineering Partnership will project manage the works at Kingsdown. Liam Woollerston, will be the Project Leader. Keith Watson, DDC is also intending to be closely involved. Use of old groynes DDC has expressed an interest in working with the local community to re-use the old groynes. Planters and beach art have been mentioned. Keith said that other areas along the coast have involved school children in the design of beach sculptures. Report by Helen Williams and Karen Brewer

Dear Friends

As we start to look forward to hopefully longer summer days and summer holidays, I would like to tell you about a few events that are happening that might be of interest to you or someone that you know. The first is an event called “Saying Goodbye” and is taking place at Canterbury Cathedral on Saturday 18th July at 12.30pm. “Saying Goodbye” services are the first national set of commemorative services, for people who have lost a baby at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy.

The loss of a baby is a devastating and traumatic experience for the mother and father, and of course for the extended family. These services provide a time and a place to acknowledge and remember your baby, whilst collectively saying goodbye. Before 24 weeks gestation there is often no funeral service held, no tribute to commemorate a life unlived. For babies lost after this time, services are normally conducted while parents are in the depth of grief. The services are for people of any faith or no faith, and for anyone who has lost a baby, whether the loss was yesterday or 80-years ago. The services are being held at Cathedrals and Ministers across the UK and the USA. Together we will say our children did exist. They may have only been on this earth for days, weeks, months or years, but they were truly loved and will always be missed! Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury. Saturday 18th of July – 12.30pm.

I would also like to let you know about two events that are taking place closer to home. So here is some news from Catherine, our Children & Youth Ministry Leader who is launching two new projects: Are you at secondary school or about to start secondary school in September? If so, we are setting up a weekly meeting place for you – but we need your help to get the project going! And - Toddler Time. For parents and carers of little ones, we will be holding a coffee morning on Thursdays in Kingsdown church, from 9am until 11am. This will be starting in September. If you would like to find out more about either event, or would like to help us, then please email Catherine at childrenandyouth@ringwouldchurch.com. Have a great summer.

Yours in Christ,

Cathy 21

At the Ripple Parish Council meeting that took place on June 11th , Councillors discussed the possibility of installing some bollards on the pathway on Mongeham Road by the crossroads. This followed the recent parking issues on the pathway and the safety of drivers and pedestrians alike on this busy crossroads. The cost of this venture is being investigated. Verge mowing was also discussed. Mowing of the verges in Ripple is due to be completed by the end of June. KCC is only carrying out one verge mowing operation this year, but if anyone is concerned about any road or experiences any problems, do not hesitate to report the problems to KCC on 03000 414 181 or on the KCC Fault Reporting System on their website. The next Parish Council meeting will be held on July 16th 2015.

Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting. *The Annual Parish Meeting was held in Sutton Community Centre on the 26th May. Representatives from Parish organisations spoke at the meeting giving details of their various activities and expectations for the forthcoming year. Many friendships have been made through the enjoyment of several clubs but overall it was felt that more parishioners would be welcome to support them and benefit from their fellowship. PCSO Tony Edwards also gave a report on issues relating to Eastry ward. Refreshments were enjoyed by all after the meeting. *Renewed road markings have been put in place at the top of Downs Rd, and the 30mph signs on Strakers Hill, have been moved back. This is part of the KCC Highways plans to make Sutton Parish roads safer. *There is a vacancy for a Parish Councillor and also a Parish Clerk for the Council. The clerk’s employment is part time and entails working from home. If anyone is interested in either of these positions please contact the Clerk at the above email address. *The Parish Council Notice board outside Sutton Church, Church Hill, Sutton, has deteriorated and will be taken away. It will not be replaced and Parishioners are asked to consult the Parish website, the notice board at Studdal Church Hall, Downs Rd, or the Clerk for future meetings. (Address at the top of this page). *The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 7th July at 7.30pm in Studdal Church Hall. There will be no meeting held in August. We wish all our parishioners a lovely summer! Veronica Harrop - Parish Clerk Would you like to have time and space for contemplation and reflection? If you need an opportunity to leave all distractions at home and have time to reflect, meditate or pray please join us on most Wednesdays at 2.30 p.m. All faiths and none are welcome. There will be separate areas to allow real peace and you will not be approached without a clear indication that you would like to speak. There will be the opportunity to post prayers and someone will available to pray with, or for you, if that is your choice. There will be a sign on the notice board on the afternoon that the hall will be open Church hall Studdal at 2.30 p.m. 31

WI Meeting June…..The subject of the talk by Anna Astin was “It’s your duty to be beautiful”. This was the slogan by the government during WWII to encourage women to do their duty to the country while still remaining beautiful for their men! The talk and slides brought back memories to those old enough to remember, of the fashions, beauty products and toiletries that were available during the war years. Anna also pointed out that the evacuation of the children to the country was not only for their safety but to leave their mothers free to work in factories, the railways and the land. Three of our members attended the WI Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and enjoyed a splendid afternoon. Luckily the sun came out on their arrival at the Palace. Our next meeting is on 13th July at 2.00pm at Ringwould Village Hall when Ken Chapman of the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust will be giving us a talk. This should be another interesting speaker and visitors are welcome. Lisa Souter

The time: 4.45pm – the day: Thursday the 4th June. Perhaps summer has arrived at last. I am sitting in the garden dressed in shorts, T shirt and sandals writing this article. I hope the picture created is not too disturbing! By the time you read this in July we will know how good or bad the summer is – fingers crossed. The plant sale was a huge success, thanks to all who got involved on the day. Thanks also to all those who prepared and donated the plants and a final big thank you to all our customers (happy I hope). Last year we had a very successful show despite almost being overwhelmed by the large number of late entries. To enable the competitor cards to be processed calmly, would you please ensure that you get your show entry forms to Barbara Peel, Little Stow, Chalk Hill Road, Kingsdown by Thursday 20th August as requested in the show schedule. Your committee still wants to accept entries on the day but with your co-operation, we will not see a repeat of last year. Just a reminder the show schedules are now available from the Post Office. You will be pleased to know that all the garden hanging baskets, troughs and pots have been placed in the required locations, as per instructions of you know who. The Society’s dates to remember for July and August are: 5th July – Penshurst Place and Gardens 27th July – Orchard tour to Chandler and Dunn Fruit Farm (Goldstone Ash) 6pm 23rd August – Annual Show Whatever you are doing be happy and keep healthy.

Kingsdown Conservation Group will be holding it's AGM on Monday 20 July at 7pm at The King's Head, Upper Street. Do please try and come along. The committee is hoping that two volunteers will come forward to take on the role of Treasurer, and to oversee Events (with help from others). If you would be happy to organise a talk or visit on an ad hoc basis, rather than become a committee member, that would also be very welcome. Light refreshments (for those who volunteer!!) will be provided. Tuesday 8 September at 7.30 for 8pm at the school Ed Santry will speak on the work of the Marine Conservation Society and will be promoting the National Beach Clean the following weekend. Also on national issues there was a "Cherishing Churchyards" week in June, promoting the wealth of fauna and flora that churchyards provide. St John's certainly looked beautiful with all the oxeye daisies. Plant Life International is urging individuals and groups like ours, to delay cutting verges until the end of July. Thanks go to the Parish Council for delaying the cutting this year, where we had planted bulbs and wild flowers seeds. Where there are verges which support chalk grassland flowers e.g. pyramidal orchids, it's sad to see them cut before they have had a chance to flower. Finally a big thank you to everyone who has supported KCG events over the last three years. Rosie
