Hello All For those who do not know me my name is Joe Wall and I usually help with the desktop publishing of Rural Roundup. Doreen Clark has kindly allowed me to write the editorial this month. The new Website for Kingsdown Conservation Group (KCG) launched at the end of February deserves special mention. Whilst some pages are now only available to KCG Members (Planning, News Bulletins and a new Forum), a new “What's on Calendar” is available to all. This includes the facility for registered users to log onto the site and enter details of their events into the calendar. If used by local organisers in this way, it will help to plan and promote events, and this will help the whole community to find events in one user-friendly place. When planning events it will be easy to see which dates are free or busy and the calendar has filters to help you find the type of event that interests you. KCG is contacting local event organisers, if you were missed and want to become a registered calendar user please email:- webmaster@kingsdownconservation.co.uk Note that the new website address www.kingsdownconservation.co.uk - ends in “.co.uk” (rather than the “.org.uk” that was used on the old site). Please try to find a few moments to browse the various sections, but remember its still in the early stages of development, and more information will of course be added as time goes on. Thank you to KCG for giving us this resource. Before moving to the village almost 18 months ago (where has that time gone?) my wife, Jenny and I lived in a “nice” but very “quiet” village in rural Staffordshire. Having moved there from the South East over 20 years ago it took several years to feel part of the community. It’s a good thing we both had busy careers and three lovely daughters to bring up - we didn't have time to get bored - but we could have if our circumstances were different. In contrast it never ceases to amaze us just how much goes on in and around Kingsdown and of course Rural Roundup keeps us all abreast - a BIG THANK YOU to Doreen for her many hours of dedicated voluntary work in keeping this going. What a wonderful place to live with its natural wonders, activities and interest groups full of so many kind and interesting people. As Guest Editor it simply remains for me to say thank you for helping us to feel part of this community and have a great 2015. Joe Wall Special Thanks. Delivery of Rural Roundup in Glen Road and Balmoral Road, Kingsdown has been taken over by WI ladies from Staff & pupils of Kingsdown School who have given dedicated service for the past 15 years, since the introduction of the “Chronicle”. Sincere thanks to all who have been involved over the years. Doreen Editor:- Doreen Clark, Popinjay Balmoral Road, Kingsdown. Clerk:- Katie Amaouche, Inglewood, Dover Road, Ringwould CT14 8BP Tel:- 01304 729 081 Email: parishclerkrwk@gmail.com

http://www.ringwouldwithkingsdownpc.kentparishes.gov.uk

At its February meeting the Council agreed the following:  To approve a recommendation from the Environment and Amenities Committee to launch a project to investigate ways of improving the children’s playground in Kingsdown following a proposal from the newly formed Parent Consultation Group set up by Mrs Lisa Dennison and other local parents. Users of the Park are concerned about safety issues, dog fouling and a lack of equipment catering for all children of all ages. For more details about the project or if you would like to help you can contact Lisa at: lisa.dennison@btinternet.com.  The Council asked Councillor Nick Jackaman to set up a pilot project in Ringwould to site planters on Parish Council owned land in the village. If the project is successful then the scheme will be extended in Ringwould and introduced into Kingsdown. Councillor Jackaman will be working with the Learning Opportunities Centre who will build the planters. You would be very welcome if you would like to help with this project. You can contact Cllr. Jackaman direct or through the Parish Clerk.  Following a trial period the Council has decided to write to Dover District Council asking them to remove the household refuse collection bins from the site adjacent to the public lavatories in Undercliffe Rd. The decision follows a series of negative comments from councillors and members of the public about fly-tipping, litter, smells, wild animals, rodents and birds seeking food.  The Parish Council agreed to make a donation of £200 to support the valuable work of the local Citizens Advice Bureau whose support service is available to everyone.  To help make access to the Parish Council easier for residents, the clerk was asked to investigate arranging dedicated PC email addresses for any councillors who would like this facility.  A member of the public complained that the minutes of PC meetings were not available on the council’s website quickly enough. Councillors pointed out that it was important that the minutes be approved as accurate by the full council before they were provided to the public and this could only be done at the following meeting of the PC.  There was extensive discussion about the rising costs, inadequacies and anti-social behaviour at the Kingsdown toilets. The Council agreed, subject to obtaining more detailed financial information on running costs from Dover District Council, to fund the Toilets in Undercliffe Rd for the forthcoming Summer season and also to look into setting up a working party to examine the future of the facility. If you have any comments to make on this matter then please contact the clerk.  The Council heard that the Environment and Amenities Committee had discussed the possibility of improving the signs which welcome people to our villages. Head teacher - Jo Hygate Glen Road, Kingsdown, CT14 8DD Tel: 01304 373 734 Secretary - Email: maggibowden@kingsdown-ringwould.kent.sch.uk Kingsdown & Ringwould School - Always Green! It has been many months since an article appeared in the Rural Roundup, regarding the environmental activities that take place in school. Due to my long period of absence the school was unable to renew the green flag, which has to be assessed biannually. However, environmental issues have, over the past years, become embedded into school life and many activities have now become routine. The school remains committed to improving environmental awareness and enjoyment. There are still facilities at school for the recycling of ink cartridges; money raised from this is donated to ‘Save the Children’. Batteries are also collected both in school and at the village post office. The rag bank raises money which is spent on environmental activities and equipment. This year has already seen a visit to the school by the Kent Wildlife Trust and years 4 and 5 enjoyed a planetarium show, which supported the national curriculum. Next term includes a minibeast workshop for three classes and the egg incubator will be set up in school. All these projects are funded by the rag bank. Children are encouraged to walk to or from school by using the ‘Walk to School’ scheme. This involves keeping a record of the number of walks made and children are awarded a badge if they successfully complete the target. A new eco-action team has been set up and a plan has been made to extend existing activities and develop new schemes. These include helping to reduce the school’s energy use, setting up eco-monitors for each class and expanding environmental clubs. In March, we are hoping to hold an energy saving event and we will be encouraging children to take part in the W.W.F. Earth Hour, which takes place on Saturday, 28th March 2015, between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. This is a worldwide event, where everyone is encouraged to switch off their lights simultaneously for one hour. It has become a major event over the years, with global support. More details can be found on the W.W.F. Earth Hour website, www.earthhour.org. Perhaps you could let other people know about it. If you do intend to support, please let me know so that I can tell the children. We may not manage a total blackout this year but it will be a start. St Nicholas Players. The players are having fun rehearsing for their next show, the well-known West End French farce, Boeing Boeing. Self-styled Parisian lothario Bernard has three fiancées, each beautiful airline hostesses with frequent ‘layovers’. There’s American Gloria, German Gretchen and Italian Gabriella. He keeps ‘one up, one down and one pending’, until unexpected schedule changes bring all three to Paris and his apartment at the same time. Bernard’s old school friend, visiting from the provinces, and his housekeeper Bertha, attempt to de-fuse the inevitable chaos. The performance dates are 20th to 23rd May at Ringwould Village Hall, curtain-up at 7.30pm. Tickets £5.00 available from the box office which opens on 20th April Telephone 01304 852 560. Dear Members of the Ringwould History Society, I thought you would like an update on the future of the Society. The Committee met on 5th February to discuss what to do next. David Evison has had the accounting records for 2014 presented to the Independent Examiner, A.R. Daly, and found to be a true statement of the business of the Society. The only event during the year was the "Heroes of World War One" Exhibition on 2nd and 3rd August. Although admissions and teas brought in a good revenue, a loss of £536.87 was incurred, largely due to the showing of the film "War Horse". The balance in the bank at 31st December is £1,106.77. After a lively debate about what to do next, the Committee came up with the idea of holding another exhibition as last year's was so successful. As we have a wealth of historical material available, this one will be called "Ringwould and Kingsdown - The Way We Were" and will be held on the weekend of 8th-9th August. We will be covering areas such as schools, inns, churches, village halls, wars, Monins family and other Ringwould/ Kingsdown families, recreation and agriculture. If you would like to be involved in any way or have any material you think would be appropriate, please let me know. I will keep you updated as plans progress. With best wishes. Jennifer Van Lens, Chairman PS: Members of the Ringwould History Society are invited by The Great Mongeham Society to attend a talk by Mark Lumsddon-Taylor on the Betteshanger Sustainable Park on Thursday 19th March at 7.30pm in Great Mongeham Parish Hall. There is ample off road parking, entrance is free and refreshments will be served. Please reply to the secretary Moyra Carey 01304 379 306

Dear Friends Consultation to consider whether or not our four parishes should become one parish. For the past two to three years, discussions have been taking place within our parishes to consider whether or not, our four parishes of Kingsdown, Ringwould, Ripple and Sutton should become one parish. By encouraging the four parishes to become one we cut down on the number of PCC meetings by about three-quarters, encourage a greater working and collaboration between the parishes and streamline the administration whilst freeing up many for mission within their parish. During this time of consultation, many questions and concerns have been raised – and quite rightly so, this is not a quick or simple decision to take. The four PCCs (the church body responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern to the parish – acting rather like a Board of Directors) have now decided that the time is right to widen the consultation to include everyone within the four parishes. I would therefore like to invite you to attend a meeting that is being held in Sutton Community Centre on Saturday morning 21st March, 9.30 - 12.30, where any questions that you may have can be raised and discussed. What difference would such a move have on the parishes?  Each church would remain your local parish church  Any money raised and/or donated for particular building projects would be spent on that building  It would mean that anyone living in one of the parishes could be married, baptised or buried in any of the four parishes – and not just the parish in which they reside  We would retain the church name – i.e. St. Mary the Virgin, Ripple – but it would now be part of a larger parish comprising all four churches. The name of Cornilo has been suggested as a possible name for the new parish – but has yet to be decided Why change something that has been in existence for many years? As with many organisations, we are finding it more and more difficult to fill the “official” posts. Each PCC should have two churchwardens, one PCC secretary and a treasurer, plus six or nine elected members. The reality is that not all of these posts are filled and many people are taking on more than one role. One of our treasurers is looking after three parishes, running three different accounting systems. It just doesn’t make sense. So if your parish church matters to you, then please put the date in your diary and come along and join in the consultation process. Yours in Christ, Cathy.

Children’s and Youth Ministry Leader for Kingsdown, Ringwould, Ripple, Sutton by Dover Hello Everyone My name is Catherine Stone and I have recently started as the Children’s and Youth Ministry Leader for the churches that cover the villages of Kingsdown, Ringwould, Ripple, and Sutton by Dover. I’m looking forward to meeting and working with all those involved with children and youth in the villages, and have lots of ideas I would like to talk to you about, including setting up a youth club in Kingsdown, and a re-launch of the Wednesday evening gatherings in Studdal. I encourage you to come along to the services of Funday Sunday and Messy Church which are not just for children, adults can have fun too! I realise for many these may seem strange ways to “do church” but I recommend you come along, and experience these different ways of worshipping and praising God. I have lived in Kingsdown for 24 years, with my husband Martin, sons Timothy and Jonathan, and our two labradors, one cat and four goldfish. I’ve been involved with village life for many years, helping at all sorts of village events from pre-school to School Governor, as well St Nicholas Players, radio reading for the blind, and reading the news for Dover Community Radio. We are blessed to be living here, in this beautiful part of the country with its lovely combination of countryside and seaside, and I’m passionate about Jesus being the centre of our communities. I welcome your thoughts and ideas about how we can do this, so please do get in touch with me at childrenandyouth@ringwouldchurch.com . I look forward to hearing from you. Catherine Stone St John’s Heritage Association, Kingsdown The Annual General Meeting of the Association takes place in St John’s Church on Thursday 26th March at 7.30 pm. You do NOT have to be a member of the Association to attend the AGM, just have a genuine interest in trying to ensure that our lovely village church will be there for future generations. Apart from the elections of Officers of the Association (for which you would need to be a member) we would like to encourage residents to become involved, even indirectly, with the Association and to this end would greatly value your input and ideas. If anyone would like any further information prior to the AGM then please contact me by email, normanjg@sky.com Norman Gilliland (Chairman)

Tea and Chat in Ripple Tea and Chat met on February 9th to enjoy tea, sandwiches, cakes and chat with a quiz to follow. The next meeting will be in Ripple Village Hall at 2.00pm on Monday, March 9th Loose Fibres Craft Group in Ripple Meetings: Ripple Village Hall - 9.30am - 12.30pm March 11th & 25th - April 8th & 22nd When I look around the hall on a Wednesday, there are so many talented people here, some areas are full of chatter and some are quiet. With the Knitters there is lots of chat and laughter. Some people can knit without watching what they are doing. They've done it for so long it's second nature, although we do have one lovely lady who only gets about four rows done on her glove at each meeting. We do tease her about this. The Painters chat to start with, then it goes quiet as they settle down to concentrate on their work. Sometimes there are as many as six painters and they each have a style of their own. Our chap doing leather work has a table on his own - he brings a selection of tools and needs the space. He is always happy to stop and talk about the piece he is working on. Our Lacemaker is immersed in following the intricate pattern of her latest piece, with bobbins moved backwards and forwards, looking up every now and then to join in the conversation. The ladies sewing and rug making can work and natter at the same time so there is a lot of laughter from them. The spinners are always pleased to show the yarns they have made and offer to help our latest apprentice spinner. One spinner is able to go on to auto pilot when she is plying her yarn - she can chat and treadle at the same time. I can't do that, as my hearing is so bad I have to look up when I am spoken to. Needless to say, I don't get much done on a Wednesday, just like our glove lady; we both enjoy the company and friendship. We have just decided we would like to go again to the Knitting and Stitching show at Alexandra Palace in October. Last time we went I hired the transport and got the tickets, the cost was ÂŁ30. If any other crafters would like to come with us, let me know as I'm starting a list. LONDON TO BRIGHTON BIKE RIDE 21st JUNE 2015 My name is Jose White (Rose Cottage, Upper Street, Kingsdown) and I am a Cardiac Nurse. I have witnessed the devastating effects that heart disease has on people’s lives, family and friends and I am sure that all of you know a loved one or a friend who has suffered the effects of heart disease. Heart failure, coronary artery disease and heart rhythm problems are just a few common health care problems that individuals have to learnt to live with. These can be life changing and challenging times for those concerned. In support of the British Heart Foundation, I am hoping to raise money to help towards the research and development of new treatments. I have signed up with my friend Ros Young, to complete the London to Brighton bike ride on 21st June 2015. Along with my wonderful padded bicycle seat (The Sofa), I would be grateful for your support in helping me to raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause. If you would like to contribute, please visit my page on the JustGiving site under Josephine White to make a donation. Thank you in anticipation. Jose x Come and celebrate Mothers’ Day with us

Save the Children - Ebola Appeal Save the Children teams are on the ground in West Africa responding to the Ebola outbreak which has killed more than 8,500 people. Not only are children in danger from the Ebola virus , they risk loosing their parents to the virus, leaving them vulnerable and without care. Our priority is to stop the spread of the disease and bring Ebola under control by running mass prevention and awareness campaigns. We are also setting up and managing health centres where Ebola sufferers can be isolated and treated. Our teams have reached more than 15,000 people. But there are 2.5 million children under five in the risk areas. We must do more to protect them. You can support our campaign by donating now 0800 8148 148 or visit www.savethechildren.org.uk. Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council

Clerk: Veronica Harrop (Ronnie) Homestead Farm, Homestead Lane, East Studdal, Dover CT15 5BU 01304 375 142 Email: veronica.harrop@tiscali.co.uk Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting.  Some of Sutton flooding issues have been dealt with by the clearance of the run offs leading off Church Hill. The pond is to be cleaned out at a later date.  Proposed by the Parish Council that parishioners ‘Adopt a Drain’ (edited - see below)  Repairs to the Playing Field in Studdal were assessed by Mr Stokes who will make the repairs in the near future. Fencing and play equipment are in need of attention.  It was agreed by the Council not to install a 20mph limit in the parish but to enforce the 30mph limit by painting white lines on the road including repeater 30mph signs.  A ‘Risk Assessment’ for the Parish Council had been drawn up by the Chairman and Councillors and it was proposed that the Council would adopt it, with yearly reviews.  Three quotes were received for the cutting and maintenance of the parish’s green areas.  The Council were pleased to accept Mr Stokes’ quote for the forthcoming year.  Mr Densham has placed 2 new salt bins in the parish due to serious icy conditions on the 4th February. One bin has been placed on ‘Boys Hill’ and the other halfway up ‘Strakers Hill’. Highways are not going to grit any of the roads in the Parish unless a ‘severe snow warning’ has been predicted. Parish roads have been placed on a secondary list as the main carriage ways are on a primary list and have priority.  The next Parish Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 3rd March at 7.30pm. Please come and support your Parish. Veronica Harrop - Parish Clerk CAN YOU ADOPT A DRAIN? Following the extreme bad weather last winter resulting in flooding of properties in Ashley and East Studdal, Kent County Council have spent a considerable amount of money clearing and reinstating soakaways in Homestead Lane, Chapel Lane and Roman Road. At the February Parish Council Meeting concern was expressed by Parishioners that flooding could still occur as surface water would bypass drains as these often became blocked with mud, leaves and debris. Unfortunately due to Government financial cut backs KCC do not have the funds to regularly clear the drains that serve the soakaways. The Parish Council are therefore asking Parishioners to help the cause by keeping clear the top and area around the drain(s) closest to their property to ensure these are fully functional. Whilst carrying out this work we would ask you to be careful of road traffic, make sure you are highly visible, do not leave debris on the road and do not remove drain covers. Hopefully this is something we as a Parish can do to help ourselves and our neighbours. Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Advance Notice

Secretary: - Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Email:- kingsdownandringwouldwi@gmail.com Another cold but sunny day encouraged a large number of members to come to the February meeting. Doreen informed us that we have now got 59 members. Elizabeth gave us the sad news that our much loved Beryl Chidwick died recently. She was a long time member and Ex President; her warmth and friendship and ready wit will be missed greatly. Barbara Peel introduced us to “Floral Fun”. This meant she produced four impressive flower arrangements using oasis, greenery from her garden (as we learnt, from the gardens of her friends and neighbours!) and supermarket flowers....we all recognised them in familiar wrapping! It all looked so easy, and even I am inspired to try my hand at home!! The arrangements were taken home by 4 lucky raffle winners. The theme of the business this month seemed to be knitting! Members already make beautiful blankets for Operation Sunshine; now we are asked to make more blankets for the homeless, and small hats and jackets for premature babies....it will certainly keep the Knit and Natter group busy. We look forward to our theatre visit to see “Jeeves and Wooster” at the Marlowe in March, and we are already planning our Summer Outing. Interest has been shown in starting a Play reading group, and also a Swimming group. As I have observed before, every day can be a day with WI! Our next meeting is on 9th March in Kingsdown Village Hall at 2pm. Jim Buttress will talk to us about “Royal Gardens” Do come. Christine Smith

Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in March th

8 Pat Macfarlane, 14th Janet Ridgley and 27th Judy Cain

The daylight hours are getting longer, the light levels are generally brighter, the sun is occasionally showing itself and at the end of March the clocks go forward. What a positive difference it makes to one’s spirit when the sun makes an effort to shine. Another early sign of spring is the increasing number of plant and seed catalogues that are posted through the letter box, most of them being destined for the recycling bin. However, a few are scanned by the “head gardener” who has already placed a number of orders; indeed some early plants have already arrived. In fact she has already been planting up some early troughs in the greenhouse. One of my jobs will be to firm up the trellis posts which have become loose as a result of the recent wind. Once again Barbara has come up trumps regarding the society outing. We will be visiting Penshurst Place on the 5 July 2015 and what a package she has negotiated. Coach pick up and drop off – entry fee to Penshurst – conducted tour of the house and gardens – high tea to be devoured at lunchtime – all for £40.00 per person. Spaces allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please contact Barbara on 01304 361381. The plant sale this year will again take place on the day of the Garage Safari – 10 May. Please donate as many plants as you can. It is an important source of income for the society. At the meeting on 30 March Christopher Wade will be giving a talk entitled “Four Seasons – A walk through Kent.” Finally, if you have any thoughts as to what the society could/should be doing please contact me on 01304 363363. I look forward to seeing you all at the March meeting. Meanwhile stay healthy.
