Hello all, I just can’t believe this is the 50th edition of Rural Roundup. The team were quite apprehensive at the beginning as to whether it would be a viable project. Now five years on, and thanks to everybody who kindly donates towards it (Parish Councils, villagers, various groups who fund-raise and the advertisers) we are still able to deliver a copy free to everyone and I think I am safe in saying it is well received. Just a little reminder that it is time to make your donations for 2015. Please give generously so that we can continue. Your contributions can be given to your village representative, sent to either the treasurer, myself, or delivered to the Rectory at Kingsdown. Just one plea, please use the Rural Roundup email address when sending in copy, NOT my personal address as it may get lost amongst all my other mail and I wouldn’t like to miss anything out. With my Parish Council hat on can I remind you that the Ringwould with Kingsdown Gardens in Bloom will definitely be taking place again this year so get planning. Details will be announced shortly. Also please note the new committee which is being set up to help in the community (see page 7) so if you would like to volunteer to help or if you need help please contact either Councillor Mark Thomas 07968 070 535, the Parish Clerk, Mrs Amouche, on 01304 792 081 or let me know through Rural Roundup. With my other hat, we are looking for a few more members to join the Kingsdown Village Hall committee. If you are interested in joining us please put your name forward and come to the AGM on Wednesday 25th March. The tables were set and beautifully decorated and the guests chatted the evening away while enjoying Bollywood music. There was also a raffle which included many Sri Lankan prizes. Well before the evening ended, the guests were already asking when the next curry evening would be taking place so that they could reserve places! They knew that there had been a very long waiting list for the curry evening and that many had missed out – so look out for future dates if you want a real treat! The proceeds of £495 from the evening were very kindly donated to the St. John’s restoration fund. A fantastic evening was had by all – including “the staff” who feasted on a different Sri Lankan curry – again prepared by Masheeda - before the guests arrived. Thank you, Masheeda, for suggesting and organising the evening – it was a wonderful evening. Cathy Sigrist

Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council December and January Councillors decided to set up a new committee to look after local Environment and Amenities issues. The committee will provide a focus for the Council’s work on a wide collection of areas including public footpaths, village playgrounds, allotments, council land, and public toilets and so on. The PC is planning to set up a register of volunteers and people who might need assistance of some form in the village. Possible examples include snow clearance, help with shopping, nuisance telephone calls, computer assistance and so on. If you would like to volunteer or if you need help please contact either Councillor Mark Thomas 07968 070 535 or the Parish Clerk, Mrs Amouche, on 01304 792 081. The PC has approved a slightly increased budget for the next financial year which will ensure that all local services will be maintained. Councillor Anthony Shepherd asked that the council do everything it can to make villagers aware of the forthcoming elections to the Parish Council. The elections will be held in May and anyone interested in standing as a Parish Councillor should contact the clerk. Concern was expressed by councillors and members of the public over the misuse of the refuse collection point at the Kingsdown public toilets. The PC will contact Dover District Council who are responsible for the collection of this rubbish to ask for an urgent review of the provision of this service at this location. Details of the 2015 Gardens in Bloom competition will be announced shortly. The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on April 16 in the Kingsdown Village Hall. There will also be displays from village societies and organisations before the meeting. If you would like your organisation to take part please contact Councillor David Bucknell or the Parish Clerk. Councillors decided, following our success in the Kent Men of the Trees competition (we were Highly Commended), to enter the competition again this year. Councillor The Rev Cathy Sigrist announced that a new youth worker has been appointed and work will commence on setting up a youth club soon for the villages. Villagers may have noticed salt bags outside the rectory in Kingsdown and at the junction of Back Street and Queens Rise in Ringwould. These have been provided by Dover District Council for the use of residents should it snow or the paths become icy. There is a new bus stop on Cliffe Road in Kingsdown. All the PC allotments at Ringwould have now been allocated to local people. Katie Amaouche 7

Celebrations We finished last term and 2014 on a real high at school: Seasiders II, organised by Sheila Wright and her team, raised over £3000 for the school. This went towards our new outdoors classroom, which is now in place in the school grounds – waiting to be used as soon as the weather warms up. This was followed by the Christmas Fayre which raised over £1,600 (significantly up on the previous year). Finally Kingsdown & Ringwould was ranked third in Kent for the levels achieved by last year’s class 6. An amazing feat! All of this reflects the support, hard work and commitment of our school community. Thank you! Jo Hygate The results of the Kingsdown Community Survey will be made public at a meeting to be held at the Kingsdown Village Hall on Saturday 14th March. The Hall will be open from 1pm to 5pm, and the results of the survey will be displayed. The raffle will be held at 2 pm, followed by a general discussion. The meeting is open to everyone, whether or not you completed a survey. Many thanks, Barbara Hansom

Dear Friends

The Lighthouse Village Prayer Box - Kingsdown Some weeks before Christmas I was visited by some local Kingsdown residents who wanted to discuss prayer. These residents, although they worship at different churches – not at St. John’s - felt that God was calling them to pray in and around Kingsdown village, for the village and for all individuals who live and work here. The result is that we are introducing “The Lighthouse Village Prayer Box.” Why Lighthouse? Well, Christ is the light of the world, and shines out, guiding travellers on their journey – just like a lighthouse.

This is an ecumenical venture – i.e. it doesn’t matter which denomination you belong to. You might not even belong to a particular denomination, it really doesn’t matter. The important thing is that if you or someone you know would like prayer, then we will pray for you or that person and/or situation for the following month. Prayers will be said during our weekly prayer meeting and also during the Prayer and Praise service that takes place at 6.30pm on the 2 nd Sunday of the month in St. John’s. As Christians we believe that prayer undergirds all that we do and as Psalm 127 says: “If God doesn’t build the house, the builders build in vain”. We are therefore inviting your particular prayer requests – because you are not alone. Confidentiality is guaranteed – and the Lighthouse Village Prayer Box will be situated just outside the Post Office in Upper Street, a central place, that many already visit regularly. The prayer box will be in place in early February. Prayer has already been taking place for the village in a number of different ways. For example, through prayer walks and regular prayer meetings– and not just in St. John’s on a Sunday morning! Prayers are being said for those who live in specific roads, and we also pray for the local pubs, shops and organisations within Kingsdown, so that over the course of a month, every road and organisation within the village is prayed for. In addition, the church has a weekly sheet and names – usually first names – are put on the sheet for those who may be unwell, or who are going through a particularly difficult time, and who have asked for prayer. So if there is something that is worrying you, just post your prayer request in the Lighthouse Village Prayer Box. For our part we commit to pray for you and your situation during the following month. We look forward to receiving your prayer requests. With every blessing. Yours in Christ Cathy

St John’s Heritage Association, Kingsdown

We wish to thank all those who supported our recent event at St John’s Church, the Fashion Show and Christmas Market, which was a great success and raised a clear £638 after all expenses paid. This was the second event held in 2014, the first being an Auction of Quality Items that was not so well attended; the atrocious weather being largely responsible. St John’s Heritage Association was formed by a group of people to raise funds for the restoration and preservation of the church of St John the Evangelist, Kingsdown, and its environs; more commonly known as the Friends of St John’s. The Association is run by a committee and holds a minimum of two fund-raising events each year. It was started in 2013, and has been up and running for 22 months. During that time we have raised through subscriptions and events a total income of £2,944.47. To date the Association has donated to the Church £810 for the new floodlights at the rear of the church and £822 for urgent repairs to the Main West Window. The latest event was geared to raise further sums for the restoration of the Upper West Window and a significant sum will be donated to the church as a result. We currently have 28 members, of which eight are lifetime members. The remainder pay an annual subscription of £10 for an individual, £18 for a couple or £21 for a family membership. Life membership is a minimum of £100. Nearly all members to date have signed a Gift Aid form that increases our subscription income by a further 20% minimum. The more members we have the higher our income. We therefore urge our supporters to join our Association, which may be done by completing an application form that may be obtained from David Dobby. LONDON TO BRIGHTON BIKE RIDE 21st JUNE 2015 My name is Jose White (Rose Cottage, Upper Street, Kingsdown) and I am a Cardiac Nurse. I have witnessed the devastating effects that heart disease has on people’s lives, family and friends and I am sure that all of you know a loved one or a friend who has suffered the effects of heart disease. Heart failure, coronary artery disease and heart rhythm problems are just a few common health care problems that individuals have to learnt to live with. These can be life changing and challenging times for those concerned. In support of the British Heart Foundation, I am hoping to raise money to help towards the research and development of new treatments. I have signed up with my friend Ros Young, to complete the London to Brighton bike ride on 21st June 2015. Along with my wonderful padded bicycle seat (The Sofa), I would be grateful for your support in helping me to raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause. If you would like to contribute, please visit my page on the JustGiving site under Josephine White to make a donation. Thank you in anticipation. Jose x

Save the Children has no political allegiance. In 2014 our teams kept children safe in war-torn communities in the Central African Republic Syria and South Sudan. We continued to deliver life-saving supplies to children affected by disaster and conflict while campaigning tirelessly to secure commitments from world leaders at the United Nations Security Council. Through our innovative programmes we improved healthcare and tackled chronic malnutrition in some of the toughest parts of the world. Every year one million babies don't survive to see their second day. That's why we called on the Prime Minister to tackle the crisis in first-day deaths and to support the training of more midwives around the world. We also run programmes here in the Uk; we provide grants to allow families to buy essential household items such as beds and bedding for children. In Dover our programme Families and Schools Together (FAST) provides support to parents to ensure that they have the skills to prevent their children falling behind with schooling in those valuable first years. The Deal Branch of Save the Children runs regular quizzes at the Deal Vics Cricket Club, Barnes Close, CT14 7RQ on the last Thursday of the month. All teams welcome, £2 a head. The next quiz is on Thursday 29th January 7pm for 7.30pm. Your support means that we can continue with our programmes and thus transform children's lives. Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council

Clerk: Veronica Harrop (Ronnie) Homestead Farm, Homestead Lane, East Studdal, Dover CT15 5BU 01304 375 142 Email: veronica.harrop@tiscali.co.uk

Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting. Local residents enjoyed the switching on of the Christmas tree lights on the Three Horseshoes green, between Studdal and Ashley, on Saturday 6th December. Mince pies and Mead wine were kindly provided by Mr & Mrs Little and other refreshments were brought along by residents. It was a happy time and everyone joined in the carol singing around the Christmas tree. On the 6th January KCC Highways started work on the drainage improvements which include: Homestead Lane, Chapel Lane and Roman Road. Highways propose that the work will take approximately 3 weeks. Although parts of these roads have been inaccessible to motorists at times the workmen have endeavoured to give residents access to their homes. There is considerable concern by the residents of Sutton of the road flooding at the bottom of Church Hill. The Parish Council are in liaison with KCC Highways who have surveyed the Sutton pond area and are making a plan of action to alleviate the flooding. PCSO Tony Edwards sent a December’s crime report for the Parish meeting. In this parish there was one crime listed which was in Ashley where a Tack Box and riding gear was stolen. PCSO Edwards said that local crime has been consistently low throughout December. He said to report non-urgent crimes please phone 101 . In an emergency call 999. You can also email the police at nhp.dover@kent.pnn.police.uk. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 3rd February at 7.30pm in Studdal Church Hall, Downs Rd, Studdal. Do come along and give us your ideas and support your Parish. All are welcome to join in. KCC have said that there is a possibility that ‘Roberts Coaches’ may be able to transport children from Studdal to Sandwich Tech and back depending on the numbers applying on a vacant seats scheme. The cost is £165 for two terms. Interested persons need to apply through the vacant seats payments scheme at:- www.kent.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/school-transport/free-schooltransport. Secretary: - Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Email:- kingsdownandringwouldwi@gmail.com There was nearly a full house of members for our first meeting of the New Year on a very grey wet windy day! Frances Smith gave us a lively insight into her years of teaching in a Primary School in Newham, East London; it was a very mixed ethnic school with a high proportion of Muslim children. Frances talked about how she taught both children and their parents how to respect each other’s culture and faith. There should be plenty to look forward to in the year to come...WI’s Centenary Year. It starts with the Annual Council Meeting in March, where Michael Portillo will be the Guest Speaker. In our local branch activities continue throughout the month, walking, Canasta, Knit and Natter to name but a few! Our treasurer, Doreen Clark, has been nominated for the Achiever’s Cup. She achieved 6 credits at level 3 in the Laser Learning Awards at Denman College. We wish her success and congratulate her on such an achievement! Our next meeting will be held in Kingsdown Village Hall on Monday 9 th February at 2pm, when the speaker will be Barbara Peel showing us some Floral Fun! Do come. Christine Smith Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in February

I hope you had a good Christmas and have had a positive start to the New Year, perhaps making a new year’s resolution which you are determined to keep. Winter is unfortunately here and I have to say there are some days when I wake and look outside the cloud base and light levels are so low, damp and grey it’s hard to be positive; it would be much easier to go back to bed for just a few minutes and the summer seems such a long way away. On the positive side the days are getting longer and spring is on its way. Now is the time to start planning this year’s holiday and to consider making changes in the garden. Our 2014 Show was a huge success thanks to all who entered. The number of entries in certain classes was almost overwhelming. If you have any thoughts as to new classes you would like introduced into the 2015 show schedule, please contact Brian Pitcher or any member of the committee at the next meeting. Remember it’s your society and the committee would appreciate your input. The next meetings are: 23rd February – Don Wilkes will be giving a talk entitled: Bluebells, Buttercups and Beasts. 30th March – Christopher Wade will be giving a talk entitled: Four Seasons, A Walk Through Kent. I look forward to seeing you there. In the meantime be healthy. Bob Perry 33

A Very Happy New Year to all our Members!

We are looking forward to Spring and to the year ahead, when we will hopefully see the Spring bulbs which we have planted over the last two Autumns coming through, and bringing some colour to the village. Sylvia's churchyard team seems to be growing, and our thanks go to all of those who help keep that area so well maintained. At the end of the first week in January 2015 already 80% of our members have paid their membership fee. Thank you for responding so promptly; if by any chance you have still got it on your "to do" list Julian Dalrymple would be delighted if you could forward a cash/ cheque to him. Membership cards will be distributed by the beginning of February. There may be villagers reading this who are new to the village or would like to join; please do email Julian on jules@julianjaky.plus.com. We have a number of events lined up for 2015; the first talk will be on 24 March at 7.30 for 8pm at the school and it will be on Wild Flowers of Kent. The talk is being given by Sue Buckingham who knows the Kingsdown area well and runs courses for Kent Wildlife Trust. We will be notifying members of the launch of the new website. The committee have received their training and once everything has been entered onto the website we will be up and running. Our grateful thanks got to Joe Wall and Jim Clugston who have been instrumental in setting the whole website up. It will give us access to a yearly calendar of events, and links to sites such as the Parish Council, Dover District Council, Kent Wildlife Trust, Sandwich Bay Observatory, Marine Conservation Society and much more.
