Hello all, I am so grateful to Joe who has done all the hard work on Rural Roundup this month. I have been away, not enjoying myself, may I say, but at Denman College working under intense pressure to gain a National WI Craft Judges qualification. At least it is over with now, and that’s it, no more studying as far as I am concerned. It doesn’t come easy when you are an oldie!!! I haven’t had mention of any other tall Sunflowers so the prizes go to the Goddens of Kingsdown and Mr & Mrs Landell. (If you could let me have your address I will deliver the small prize). Well done. I have mentioned before about copy for Rural Roundup. We would be grateful if it is not sent in as a A4 Poster, just as a word document in a font no larger than 10 point in upper and lower case and NOT BLOCK CAPITALS. Tthis would reduce our work load considerably by not having to resize and convert the font to fit the space we have available. Any logos or pictures as Jpegs please. Don’t forget that the next issue is a double one to cover December and January events so please remember to send in the appropriate dates. Joe has set up an automated reply to any emails that come in so in future you will see that we have received the copy. We will only reply if there is a problem; otherwise look out for your article to appear in the following issue. All the best, Doreen Clark Ed.

We Wish you a Merry Christmas said Good King Wenceslas on the First Noel. Have you any Holly and Ivy said the We Three Kings? We need your help! Do you recognise any of these Christmas Carols? We need volunteers to join our Carol singing group in December on any of the days between Saturday13th - Wednesday 24th (inclusive) for two hours or so. Every year for nearly 100 years residents of Kingsdown have sung around the village raising money for good causes. All you need are warm clothes, a light to read the Carol sheets (supplied), a good sense of fun and not be frightened of the weather. We welcome Children, Mums, Dads, Aunties, Uncles, Grand Parents and anyone who would like to join us for one or more evenings leading up to Christmas. To volunteer and book your evening slot carol singing ring Sylvia on 373 651, Sue 381 567 or Dina 373 176. Editor:- Doreen Clark, Popinjay Balmoral Road, Kingsdown. 20’s Plenty – We need your help and support In November 2012, some 300 residents of the Parish signed a petition in support of reducing the speed limit of traffic in specific roads in our villages from 30mph to 20mph. Since that time, the Parish Council has been accruing funds to help pay for the implementation of such a scheme as estimates of costs were in excess of £9,000. The funds have now been accrued and your Parish Council has recently been in contact with KCC to request a meeting to discuss a number of different issues regarding speed and safety on our roads. Our first request, in June, resulted in a standard letter – that quoted legislation that has been obsolete for nearly two years. Our request for a meeting was turned down as “there have been no recorded incidents in the last three years, this does not provide evidence of a safety problem which could be addressed by lowering the speed limit and therefore we will not be considering your request at this time.” KCC are still refusing to have a meeting to discuss our concerns. So if you are concerned about the safety of the roads in our villages then there is something that you can do to help. The only way that we are going to be able to make our villages safer for pedestrians is to establish tangible community support for 20mph speed limits. So please do sign the petition so that we can show KCC just how much support we have to lower the speed limit in our villages. (If you signed the petition in 2012 to lower the speed limit, we still have your signatures, so there is no need to sign again.) In Ringwould, petitions will be available in Ringwould Church and The Five Bells Pub. In Kingsdown, the petitions will be available in St. John’s Church, The Post Office, the Kings Head, the Rising Sun and the Zetland. Help make the parishes a safe place for all. Thank you. Cathy Sigrist – Parish Councillor, Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council.

Dear Villagers, This letter is to let you know about the changes currently going on within our local Kingsdown Scout troop. Unfortunately there is a real risk that the group will fold in the New Year due to a lack of adult leaders. I am currently running the group on my own since our other Assistant Leader stepped down due to work and personal commitments. Volunteer supporters have helped out recently, which has meant that sessions could go ahead with sufficient adult supervision. However, the role of Leader/Assistant Leader is too much for one person to do alone. I have to fit these duties in with juggling shift-work alongside my shift-working husband, caring for our children and fitting in all the usual other family commitments! I am in touch with the District Scout group, which is providing support and I’m prepared to carry on until December. However, unless another Leader/Assistant Leader comes forward before the New Year, I will be forced to reluctantly stand down and the troop will fold. If you or anyone you know (family, friends, work colleagues) would be prepared to join the group I would be very grateful. I was once told that if you had a core leadership team of five, each with different responsibilities, then the group would run smoothly. Many hands make light work as they say! This would be an ideal scenario with the collective coming up with great ideas and progressing the troop. Please think creatively as to how we could solve this issue as the group is an important social resource for our community and is thriving in terms of demand for places. It’s a really important part of our children’s enjoyment and development. 12th Deal (Kingsdown) Scouts meet on a Friday evening at Kingsdown & Ringwould Primary School, 7.30-9pm. If you can help, please contact me on 01304 371 138. Many thanks in advance. Sara Atkinson, Assistant Leader

Head teacher - Jo Hygate Glen Road, Kingsdown, CT14 8DD Tel: 01304 373 734 Secretary - Email: maggibowden@kingsdown-ringwould.kent.sch.uk Wow what a busy first term!.........The school’s sporting season has begun with wins for the League and Tournament Boys’ Football Teams. Our KS1 played competitively in a Multi Skills competition at St Margaret’s and our Girls’ Football Team is just about to compete in its first tournament this year. To further improve sports provision at the school, we have employed a Sports Coach, who works one day a week working alongside teachers and running clubs. The School also is able to offer a Golf Club for our up and coming Rory McIIroys! The House and Charity Monitors have been voted for by our older children. The competition this year was fierce with 30/32 of the children standing for election. From this the following children were elected to be House Captains - Harvey, Maddie, Megan, Joe, Yosef, Holly, Ella and Patrick Our charity this year will be The Autistic Society with Ollie and Harrison as the Monitors. Open Afternoon- If you know any families that have children who are due to start school next academic year please let them know about our Open Afternoon on Thursday 13th November at 1.30pm or I am happy to tour them around the school at their convenience. Just ring the school office for an appointment Jo Hygate Ebola is tearing through West Africa, killing up to 70% of those infected and spreading fear through their communities. We now have a small window to contain this outbreak. Hundreds of children have already died and many thousands more are at risk of catching the disease or being orphaned. Ebola is threatening an entire generation. Save the Children is already on the ground, working with partners, doing whatever it takes to prevent the spread of this disease and protect families from the devastation it causes. We have set up a treatment centre in Liberia and are helping the UK government to set one up in Sierra Leone We need you to help us contain the virus. That is why Save the Children has launched an international appeal to tackle this deadly disease. To donate call 0800 0351 251 or visit savethechildren.org.uk/ebola

Dear Friends,

Everything has its time

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Eccles 3: 1 I always think of November as an “in between” time. By this, I mean that it is a time to look back and also a time to look forward. As the nights begin to draw in and autumn really begins to take a hold, we look back, as once again our thoughts move towards Remembrance Sunday and for many, the Cenotaph, when tributes are paid to all those who gave their life for their country and who came to the aid of others who were fighting for their freedom. As the years passed, there were fewer and fewer “old soldiers”. Unfortunately there are now new generations joining those who march past the Cenotaph, who have fought in recent conflicts. This year, on the 4th of August, we marked the 100th anniversary of the day Britain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history – the First World War – with fighting continuing until the 11th of November 1918, Armistice Day. This war was supposed to be “the war to end all wars” – but as we know, this was not the case, and many millions have been killed or seriously injured since that time and the number, tragically, continues to rise. On 9th November, acts of Remembrance will be held in our parish churches and I would like to invite everyone to come to one of those services and to give thanks and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them We will remember them It is also at this time of year when we look back to remember our loved ones, those whom we remember but see no more. This year our United Benefice Memorial service is at 3.30pm in St. John’s Church Kingsdown on the 2nd November. If you would like the name of a loved one to be read out during the service, then please write their name(s) on the sheets that are in the churches. All are welcome. As I said, I do think of this as an “in between time”, so as well as looking back, it is also a time to look forward – a time to look forward to Advent - a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This year Advent begins on 30th November – and on that evening we will be holding a Taize service at 6.00pm in St. Nicholas Church, Ringwould – a time of prayer and quiet reflection and a time for healing. Again, all are welcome. And so, it is a time to remember those who are no longer with us and a time to look forward to Advent and Christmas and to the young baby who will in time also give his life that we might have life and have it to the full: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but may have eternal life.’ (John 3: 16)

Yours in Christ,

Cathy

Clerk: Veronica Harrop (Ronnie) Homestead Farm, Homestead Lane, East Studdal, Dover CT15 5BU 01304 375 142 Email: veronica.harrop@tiscali.co.uk Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council. Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting.

  

  

The street lights in Stoneheap Road and lights near Sutton Church Hall, Downs Rd, have been reported by parishioners as not working or are missing. This will be reported to Highways/street lighting by the Parish Clerk. It was said that the 30mph signs at the top of Strakers Hill had become partly concealed by encroaching hedgerow and that one of the signs had been bent backwards by passing traffic. Mr Stokes said that he would deal with the problems. The Parish Council considered applying to KCC for a 20mph speed limit to be introduced throughout the parish as it has been noticed there has been an increase in traffic not adhering to the present 30mph limit. The Council decided to observe the parish roads so that a visual report may be recorded of places that need traffic calming. The ongoing problems of the flooding issues were discussed. It was said that the soakaways in the Homestead Lane areas had not yet been repaired or cleaned out and also some of the drains. The Parish Council is to contact KCC Highways on the progress of the flooding works. Sutton Pond, Church Hill, Sutton is waiting to be cleared by KCC and they have proposed this to be done during October. There had been several complaints from neighbouring houses that bonfire smoke from the allotments in Ashley had engulfed their gardens. Allotment owners will be asked to be considerate when lighting fires.

Mr & Mrs Vickers were thanked for making the planters on The Green in Homestead Lane look so attractive with pansies. Mr Little said he is hoping to put a Christmas Tree on The Green during December. It was announced that the Albion Football Coaching had started in Studdal Playing Field on Saturday mornings from 10-12 pm. Please email: albionfootballcaoaching@gmail.com if your child is interested in joining. There is room for more children to come and have fun. Please come and join us for an informative evening on your Parish of Sutton. Veronica Harrop - Parish Clerk

I said last month that I hoped we would have an Indian Summer and September certainly did us proud. But rain has stopped play for the moment which means the bulbs I have bought this year will have to wait another day before they are put into the ground. So I am taking advantage of this time to write my very last article for the Rural Roundup. The AGM took place on Monday 27th October and I stepped down as Chairman having held the position for eleven years. I was on the committee two years before that, making a total of thirteen years on the Garden Society committee. They have been thirteen wonderful years and I am going to miss being involved in the fund raising, the Village Show, the Plant Sale and the monthly meeting. So a very big thank you to all of you – all the committee members and their spouses, all the members (some of whom have been in the Society much longer than me) and everyone else involved some way or other – for you very loyal support and sincerely hope you will give the next Chairman and committee the same support. Be safe and enjoy your gardening . Sue Martin

The 3rd Annual Bulb planting took place during the last week of October and our thanks go to all those members who collected the 2000 bulbs and planted them. We look forward to the Spring display around the village. Smugglers’ Supper on Friday 14th November 2014 at the school – All members should have received an invitation online or hand delivered. Contact Rosie if you haven’t booked yet, as demand has been high. We are looking forward to an entertaining evening, Gregory Holyoake will now be accompanied by our Treasurer David Harding (due to Neil Wright being unwell). Don’t forget the sea chest will be full of treasures for the Tombola, wine or soft drinks will be provided, nautical themed dress is optional, and do bring food. Following KCG’s request to members for “Neighbourhood Niggles” we are delighted to see that DDC has replaced the open litter bin at the end of Boundary Road with a lidded bin, which will hopefully contain the rubbish until it is collected.
