It’s been said that the “eyes are the window to the soul”, which alludes to the power the eyes have to convey so much about the person. Levity, youth, energy and light can be portrayed through the eyes, and on the flipside, so can anger, sadness, exhaustion, and age.

Heavy eyelids and hooding can be a frustrating issue early in the aging process. Some of the first signs can be difficulty applying eyeliners and eyeshadow, and ultimately can progress to limitation of visual fields and unnecessary heaviness causing feelings of fatigue.

Treating heavy upper eyelids is easier than most people think! For very mild heaviness, sometimes a neurotoxin like Botox, Dysport, or Daxxify can minimally elevate the upper lids. You will generally only achieve 1-2mm of lateral brow elevation, and if more is required the next option is surgical.

An eyelid lift, or “upper blepharoplasty” is an easy, in office procedure done under local anesthesia with minimal associated downtime. Editor’s Note

As I celebrate my one-year anniversary as the editor of Inside New Orleans, I am filled with excitement and gratitude. This past year has been a journey of discovery, allowing me to delve into an industry I once only dreamed of. The JBL team has been a joy to work with, and the opportunity to meet such interesting and talented people is a perk I will never get tired of.

Looking back, I am reminded of all the experiences from the past year. Attending my first Women IN Business Luncheon ranks among my favorites. The best part was getting to learn a little about the women in our community who are essentially business rock stars. I can’t wait to see what the next year will bring!

As for this summer, on those super hot days, stay cool and visit one of the city's many museums, or treat yourself and a friend to lunch at a restaurant you have never tried but always wanted to. This is certainly one of my goals!

I am a former Zuppardo family restaurateur, and my grandma Mary Binder, was the founder of Binder’s Famous Bakery in the Upper Ninth Ward on St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans. As a child, I remember playing ball with “flour” in my grandma Mama Mae’s bakery attic with my 4 siblings Gregory, Michelle, Randy and Billy. My most vivid memories in the kitchen are of Grandma Binder, and my mother Rachel, cooking and baking, oldfashioned healthy, delicious homemade dishes. During Covid, I took a hiatus from my New Orleans radio show “The Cuisine Report.” I am excited to get back “In the Kitchen” to cook for fun and health with my New Orleans community, in the pages of Inside New Orleans Magazine

Brad is an attorney who lives and works in Covington. Brad writes guest articles for Inside New Orleans. He enjoys cooking, playing the guitar, golf, watching sports, playing pickleball, and traveling with his wife, Joneé, and daughter, Lilette.

Anna Tusa is the Director of Operations for Briquette, the Briquette Wine Room and New Orleans Creole Cookery. On p. 66, Anna shares her favorite cocktails from her travels.

IT SOUNDS PRETTY SIMPLE to say it all started with a can of beans, but it accurately describes how Joe Mustachia started his career as an artist. Growing up, Joe enjoyed drawing, and with time, his craft began to develop, making others take note of his talent. Middle school would see him painting the glass breezeways with the school’s logo. Creativity was always part of his life, leading Joe to study art and physical education at the University of New Orleans. Life, as it often does, presented him with adult choices. In love with his would-be wife Cathy, the two married and started their lives together. Driven by his responsibilities, Joe set aside his art, began a landscape business, and he and Cathy raised their son and daughter.

In 2019, the passing of the Mustachia’s beloved dachshund Bosco would rekindle Joe’s creative passion, and he would again pick up the innovative tools that were once so familiar to him. Seeking comfort and a way to memorialize Bosco, Joe turned to his most innate form of expression and drew a beautiful picture of Bosco.

A few months later, Joe’s brother-in-law approached him about painting something nostalgic for his Louisiana-themed room. He wanted something quintessential New Orleans that would stir emotion and familiarity. He had a specific subject in mind

for the piece; he just needed an artist. Thus, a can of Blue Runner Beans entered the scene, significantly changing Joe’s life.

Blue Runner Beans are a traditional part of New Orleans culture, evoking the fondest memories for generations. It was precisely the piece that Joe’s brother-in-law wanted. Joe got to work painting, making several styles, each larger. “Each time I did another, I thought the next would be better,” recalls Joe. In time, his brother-in-law got his Blue Runner Bean painting and hung it proudly. The different versions of the painting would soon end up at a Denham Springs community art show where people fell in love with the piece of local nostalgia. To Joe’s surprise, each version quickly sold. The Blue Runner Beans painting would

begin Joe’s art career trajectory, creating an unexpected ride and a dream come true.

Artists are often told to adhere to what they know regarding their subject matter. Joe truly takes this concept to heart when choosing the subjects of his work. I asked why he had chosen these particular subjects. He easily clarified, “It’s what I know. Generally, I prefer to choose recognizable objects and locations from New Orleans and around the Louisiana area. I draw upon a lifetime of memories and experiences growing up and living in this area.”

Joe has no shortage of subject matter. Familiar fragments of renowned and celebrated New Orleans inspire him. From the vibrant and detailed porches of shotgun houses and the time-worn faces of musicians playing

in a Second Line Jazz Band to the old Roman Candy Wagon clanging its bell and spreading taffy bliss and towering oaks with monstrous, thrusting limbs like giant arms, or magnolia trees complete with bursting pods and full blooms, he captures them all with paint and canvas. These reflective, everyday institutions are significant to Joe, as they represent the very essence of the character of the New Orleans that he has known and loved all of his life.

The tale-tell signs of a Joe Mustachia composition are unmistakable at first glance. The colors will pull you in first and fast. Bold and brilliant, they draw the eye to look and look and look again because you won’t want to miss a single detail. Plus, you will swear he has created a color never seen by the human eye before. After you absorb the subject’s compelling colors and nuanced details, you will likely find your hand, ostensibly without realizing it, reaching out to touch the textured canvas. Joe’s paintings have a powerful impact on the senses.

Impasto texture is another significant and unmistakable distinction in Joe’s pieces. This textured component is laborious and time-consuming because each color, of the layers upon layers of the acrylic paint he generously prefers, takes time to dry thoroughly, shutting down the process. Adding to the painstaking technique is the fact that Joe does not generally use a brush. “Instead,” explains Joe, “ it is thrown, dripped and/ or splattered, giving the piece a dynamic, textured effect.” You must marvel that although the motif was constructed with drips, splatters, and slaps of paint, it is entirely clear.

For Joe, the viewer’s connection to the piece is a crucial part of the process. He wants the viewer to feel “as though they are a part of the painting.” Amidst the unparalleled hallmarks of New Orleans and her natural qualities that take center stage, the canvas comes to life, bathed in layers of vivid colors and adorned with a heavily textured paint surface. In such a context, forging a connection becomes inevitable.

In 2022, Joe was chosen to create the Washington Mardi Gras poster themed “Louisiana: America’s Foreign Country.” On the poster, Joe conveyed what he wanted the rest of the world to know about his home: “I wanted to capture the vibrant color, positive energy, and unique atmosphere that makes Mardi Gras and our state so special.”

Thinking about the success that has befallen him since that Blue Runner can painting, Joe humbly laments upon his great fortune: “ For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in creating things. Growing up, I just never imagined I could potentially earn a living creating art.” Today, every day, or any day, Joe can go to “work” in his garage-turned-studio and create, which is what he truly loves.

THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURE of neon signs has been woven into the culture and history of New Orleans since the late 1940s and has contributed to the lively ambiance that defines the Big Easy. From the neon-lit jazz clubs of the French Quarter to the iconic signs of historic businesses, these glowing symbols have significantly shaped the city’s visual identity.

THE NEON SIGNS that have tirelessly flashed against the backdrop of New Orleans for decades are a familiar staple to locals. Drive around any part of New Orleans, and you can’t help but be drawn to those beacons of light that lure you in with their electric excitement. Their magical flicker summons all who pass to stop in and partake in an array of goods and services: some you would expect and others you might not.

Neon signs have adorned the fronts of various establishments for decades, extending beyond just restaurants and bars. As early as the 1940s, they could even be spotted on office buildings. On North Claiborne Street, Standard Life Insurance displays a blue and white light-festooned neon blade sign on its old building that remains today.

The presence of a neon sign at a mortuary may seem surprising, but the Majestic Mortuary in Central City has proudly displayed one since the late 1940s. This gem is a large circle with a blue backdrop displaying their name and the message,” We serve with Reverence,” in white neon lights. The glow of the Majestic Mortuary sign remains on the property today. Incidentally, the old Handelman Department Store building is directly across the street from the Majestic Mortuary. Now loft apartments, the timeless old building still wears its green and white neon moniker.

Q. Lee Dry Cleaners, established in 1940, joined the neon sign trend with Mr. Quong Lee Sr.’s name outlined in green lights, reflecting the Kanban font for its oriental touch. The sign’s vibrant colors and quirky slogan, “‘I’ call. Do it All,” exemplify the versatility of neon signs in advertising and identifying businesses. Despite the general association of neon signs with restaurants and bars, businesses recognized their visual appeal as a unique advertising tool long ago.

The French Quarter is a neon sign lovers paradise. A stroll down Bourbon Street will prove that. Beyond

the flashy glow of Bourbon Street over on Decatur is Tujague’s. Known for its distinctive neon sign that features the restaurant’s name in cursive writing, it has become a recognizable symbol of Tujague’s. For locals, Tujague’s is significant because it’s been in the Quarter for 168 years, and its neon flicker since the 1920s.

In the Garden District, Commander’s Palace’s neon sign is well-known by locals and tourists alike. The “Commander’s Blue” sign has a simple but classic design. The restaurant’s name is printed in white but is electrified by small neon light bulbs. It is stunning during the day, but it is at night when this sign truly gives her best. In some nighttime photos, its name appears as if levitating, unencumbered by the structure that holds the sign. Commander’s recently replaced its original sign due to bulb replacement challenges. Thus, the sign that has been the center of thousands of photographs was replicated and now uses LED lights. Underscoring its nostalgia, the original electric, Commander’s blue sign has joined the old classic McKenzie’s sign in retirement at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum. Museum founder Liz Williams, who was so helpful in this article, offers a wealth of knowledge on the two endearing neon signs that she saved from going to scrap.

In recent years, the rise of more costeffective and energy-efficient signage has led to a decline in the flashing beacons. Many have fallen into disrepair and are being removed and replaced by their less expensive LED counterparts, leaving a void in the cultural tapestry of New Orleans. New Orleans neon signs are more than just advertisements; they are living artifacts that connect the present to the past. Their familiar shine has come to be expected as one turns a certain corner or drives down a particular street. With their vibrant colors and iconic designs, they transport to a bygone era and excite the current one. In every flicker and buzz of these glowing symbols, there is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and vibrant spirit of the Crescent City. Preserving them is a way of honoring the resilience of her people and ensuring that future generations can experience the city’s unique atmosphere.

For over a century, the streets of New Orleans have been graced by the familiar clip-clop of horse hooves belonging to the unmistakable Roman Candy cart full of gourmet taffy.

What began as a simple sweet treat for family members blossomed into a beloved New Orleans tradition. Crafted by Angelina Napoli Cortese, her 12-year-old son Sam, a street vendor, occasionally sold leftover candy from his fruit and vegetable wagon. In response to the high demand, he began selling candy regularly, but Angelina was too busy to make candy daily. Sam’s ingenious solution was to make the taffy himself as the cart rolled down the street, a tradition that still continues in Sam’s original cart.

Ron Kotteman and his son Daniel continue the family business today, traveling from Uptown to downtown to the

The 1920s saw Andrew Meyer join his father in the store. The 1940s would bring Andrew’s sons Sam Meyer II and William into the business. Sam Meyer II, now 99 years old, is often found in the iconic shop assisting customers.

Paul Meyer, the fourth-generation milliner, attributes their longevity to a blend of tradition and adaptation. While honoring its roots as a retail store, Meyer The Hatter stays current by introducing new styles and brands that appeal to a diverse clientele. Leveraging social media marketing, they attract customers nationwide, while their commitment to quality craftsmanship sets them apart. Domilise’s Restaurant and Bar has been a beloved fixture in Uptown for over a century. Established around 1918 by Peter Domilise, Domilise’s was originally a local bar catering to the riverfront workers community. Drawing from his culinary experience in the Navy, Peter expanded the menu over time to include plate lunches and, eventually, their house specialty po-boys.

Today, Domilise’s Restaurant and Bar still occupies its original location on the corner of Annunciation and Bellecastle Streets. A renovation in 2015 updated the restaurant’s original equipment. However, every artifact (and there are many) that had become a part of Domilise’s since 1918 was carefully removed, preserved, and returned to its rightful place once the renovation was complete. Walking in the front door is like going back in time. The original counter greets you, the handwritten board menu remains on the wall, the original tables and bar stools stay, and even the cash register that has lived behind the bar since the very beginning remains. Once inside the restaurant, it is easy to forget that it’s 2024.

Domilise’s is known for quality, consistency, and timeless flavors in every po boy, a commitment to freshness, with each meticulously crafted to order, ensuring a hot and delicious meal every time. With staff like Raymond, who faithfully served behind the bar for 53 years, and families returning for generations to make it their “special place,” Domilise’s rich heritage will remain forever.

The traditional ceremony included heartfelt readings by the groom’s Godmother and the bride’s cousin. There were emotional moments, such as when Parker was captivated by his bride as she was escorted down the aisle by her father. A touch of whimsy was also present, when the ring bearer doubling as ‘ring security,’ complete with a briefcase, earpiece, sunglasses, and badge, delivered the rings without incident.

Hannah stunned in a Blue Willow by Anne Barge modified sweetheart full A-line “Confetti” gown with a detachable matching overlay featuring allover 3D leaf embroidery. The bridal party donned powder pink Dessy Group attire from Bella Bridesmaids. The groom and groomsmen wore traditional black tuxedos, with a white bow tie for the groom and black bow ties for his groomsmen.

The celebration continued at Chateau Golf and Country Club, where guests were treated to a feast catered by Chateau, featuring passed hors d’oeuvres and a gumbo station. Gambino’s crafted a traditional wedding cake with a strawberry filling, complemented by a chocolate LSU-themed groom’s cake.

The evening was filled with music from MOJEAUX and lively dancing, with highlights including the couple’s first dance and a traditional second-line exit. Studio Tran captured every moment, ensuring that Hannah and Parker’s wedding will be cherished forever.

The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, where they relaxed after a busy and exciting couple of weeks of wedding planning and festivities. Mr. and Mrs. Parker Edwards reside in Zachary.

WELCOME TO MY FIRST COLUMN, celebrating the wonderful restaurants in the New Orleans area. We are all spoiled regarding the restaurant scene in our great city. I look forward to showcasing the culinary hot spots in New Orleans that make us drool, trigger a growl or two from our stomachs, and spoil our taste buds. Allow me to introduce you to a new restaurant you’ve never visited or rekindle a love for an old restaurant you may have forgotten. With the summer months approaching, let’s do our best to get out and support the restaurants that define our great city. Our first stop takes us to Mister Mao, an old Uptown cottage on Tchoupitoulas Street in the old Dick & Jenny’s location. Mister Mao specializes in the fusion of traditional Chinese flavors and creole cuisine, along with flavors from India, Pakistan, and Mexico that pack a flavorful punch. Few flavors are as bold and satisfying as those from those regions. Executive chef and co-owner Sophina Uong brings her roots as a Cambodian-American to the forefront at Mister Mao.

Summer Bites

A James Beard “Best Chef” semifinalist in 2024, Chef Uong serves bold flavors with attitude in each dish at Mister Mao. We stepped into Mister Mao and felt the lively vibe. The dining room strikes a perfect balance between fun and vibrant. Our meal was a delightful journey through flavors, from sweet and spicy to savory and rich, seamlessly blending New Orleans, India, China, Pakistan, and Mexico. Sharing dishes allows you to explore the diverse menu. We were hooked with the avocado chaat, which features pickled beets and yogurt. Smoked oyster mushrooms with squash fritter and salsa verde followed, and we wanted more. If you have never tried oyster mushrooms, they are incredible and elevated at Mister Mao in ways I did not know were possible. Do yourself a favor and order this savory dish.

Next, we had the Kashmiri Fried Chicken, a staple on the ever-changing menu. It took us briefly into Pakistani airspace and back over Indian airspace. This fried chicken dish would make Mr. Ed’s jealous. Next, we were treated to a Gulf tuna crudo with coconut milk, cucumber, passion fruit, and Texas olive oil. This light and fresh dish provided a guiltless indulgence amidst the guilty pleasures that hit us from all directions during our meal. The soft, fresh tuna slices simply melted in our mouths.

Like all good things, our meal came to an end, but our experience at Mister Mao was outstanding. The wait staff was friendly, the service was exemplary, and General Manager Roger Eyles was kind enough to offer us excellent insight into the dishes.

Mr. Mao knows the elements that make a restaurant: a vibrant atmosphere, bold, memorable, consistent flavors, and fearlessly unapologetically serving dishes everyone will love. We will be back.

Our final stop takes us to one of the most innovative restaurants in the city: Restaurant August. Since its

inception, Restaurant August has garnered accolades from locals and visitors, cementing its place as one of New Orleans’ premier restaurants. Led by locally acclaimed Chef John Besh and Executive Chef Corey Thomas, Restaurant August entices diners with refined flavors, creative textures, and a rare level of sophistication seldom seen. As soon as you step inside Restaurant August, you are immediately transformed into a world of opulence and elegance. Crystal chandeliers and plush furnishings adorn the interior dining room, providing an unmatched level of class.

It’s a beautiful dining space, but the cuisine is the real star. Inspired by French, Creole, and Southern cuisines, their dishes are works of art. Restaurant August boasts several signature dishes such as the red snapper Pontchartrain or the gnocchi “black and blue” with jumbo lump crabmeat, but the centerpiece of the menu is the chef’s tasting menu, where the chefs can show off their skills. We were treated to the chef’s tasting menu with accompanying wine pairings. To say our jaws dropped after each course was brought to our table is an understatement. Fascinated by the Titanic, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between our experience at Restaurant August and the opulent ten-course dinners enjoyed by first-class passengers. I almost felt I needed my white tie and tails to complete the experience.

Our first course was the famous Amuse Bouche Egg. This famous course is a seafood and egg custard with a hint of truffle, topped with caviar. Our second course featured a smoked carrot tartlet shell, huckleberry Fred’s chèvre, and coal-roasted carrot brushed with house carrot garum. Next came the fruits de mer course, which showcased local seafood: red snapper court bouillon, jumbo lump crab, and oysters. Each bite brought the familiar flavors of Louisiana with an unmatched elevation of seasoning. Our next course was my favorite: ravioli stuffed with a poached farm egg and topped with shaved black truffles. It was ecstasy, as each bite seemed to melt in my mouth. Next, the pan-seared diver scallops with Iberico pork slices wedged between the sliced scallops. Yes, you read that right. Iberico pork. Nectar of the pork gods. Following a fresh pallet cleanser, we were on to our main course –

grilled Colorado lamb loin with fresh morel mushrooms, heirloom carrots, and Armagnac reduction. This symphony of flavors harmoniously triggers every taste bud with each bite. As if that were not enough, we were presented with a cheese tray for our next course, followed by the dessert course that made my inner 10-year-old jump for joy. The dessert featured chocolate-covered praline ice cream bars delicately laid across an aged wood board. Executive Pastry Chef Tamber Weirsheuser’s innovative and fun dessert was a perfect bookend to a memorable meal.

There was also lots of very good wine from all over served between each course, and champagne was also served during one of the courses. Despite the numerous courses, each course was scaled down to perfection, and we left our meal full but not stuffed, which was perfect.

As expected, the servers were top-notch and highly professional. Chef Thomas and Chef Weirsheuser spoke with us during our meal about their stories, passions, and innovative drive to achieve new and exciting culinary masterpieces.

The experience at Restaurant August is much more than a meal. It is a celebration of culinary innovation with the finest ingredients and ambiance that New Orleans has to offer. Make Restaurant August the next stop on your culinary voyage. It is quite a memorable experience.

Homemade Tamales

MY FAMILY ENJOYS making homemade tamales together at least three times a year. It is filled with meats, beans, cheese, or vegetables and then wrapped and steamcooked in corn husks or banana leaves. Try this recipe for homemade tamales that will melt in your mouth and surprise your palette in the most heavenly way.

INGREDIENTS FOR TAMALE MEAT FILLING

3.5 lbs Boston Butt (shoulder roast)

1 to 2 teaspoons each of Garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cumin, oregano, pepper, red pepper flakes, and salt to taste. 2 tablespoons of Olive oil, to be used separately.

DIRECTIONS

Brown and sear a 3.5 lbs Pork Boston Butt with or without the bone. Season the pork butt on both sides using your hands to generously cover it in flavor with garlic, onion powder, cumin, oregano, pepper, pepper flakes (pepperonchini), and salt to taste. Following this, drizzling olive oil over the pork butt, and again use your hands to thoroughly rub the seasoning and olive oil into the meat. Brown and sear meat on all sides in a 5-quart pot greased with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sprayed with

high-heat avocado nonstick spray.

Cover with Chicken or beef stock and cook for 5 hours, stirring occasionally.

INGREDIENTS FOR MASA HARINA TAMALE DOUGH

3 cups of Vegetable shortening

½ cup butter

4 teaspoons of aluminum-free baking powder

1 ½ to 2 tablespoons of salt (sample and taste the dough)

6 to 8 cups of broth from the cooked Meat broth 1st 8 cups of Organic Masa Harina

DIRECTIONS

Whip the shortening until creamy. Add the baking powder. Add ½ the salt first. Slowly add Masa. Alternate broth and Masa, repeating until gone. The dough should be like peanut butter or hummus. Taste and sample the dough first and add cumin and chili powder to taste.

Tip: Drop a dime-sized piece of dough in warm water. If it floats, the dough is ready. If it sinks, it is not ready. Whip the dough for a few more minutes.

TAMALE WRAP INGREDIENTS

1 package of Corn Husks

DIRECTIONS

Soak husks in warm water for 1-2 hours to clean and soften them; dry with paper towels.

Spread the dough on the smoother side of the husk’s lower half, using 1/2 of the husk for smaller tamales or 3/4 for larger ones.

Steam the Tamale. Place the open side of tamale upright in the steamer. Line the tamales side by side, upright, tightly in steamer. Fill the steamer with about 2 inches of water, bring to a boil, then turn to medium heat; keep the water boiling for one hour. Keep sealed while cooking. Steam tamales until dough is firm and easily separates from husk.

INSIDE NEW ORLEANS sales rep, Renée, and I went on a culinary adventure last week and lunched at The Country Club in Bywater.

The vibrant Creole cottage was transformed from a residence into The Country Club restaurant and bar 45 years ago. Nestled back from the street, it boasts a spacious, beautifully landscaped yard, but it is the inside that is most stunning.

Upon opening the front door, we were immediately captivated by the lofty ceiling and the dining parlors beyond. Each parlor, bathed in natural light, features dining tables and elegant light green bamboo-style chairs. Yet, it’s the walls that truly steal the show. In the two larger rooms, magnificent hand-painted murals depict oversized flowers native to Louisiana. Vibrant Louisiana irises, majestic magnolias, exotic birds of paradise, delicate pink roses, and intricately detailed wildflowers adorn the walls, enchanting all who behold them.

The smaller front right room follows a bird theme, with hand-painted avian motifs scattered whimsically throughout the bright, white space, each depicting birds in various natural states. Meanwhile, the expansive foyer boasts bright green hand-painted palm fronds, lending a tropical touch before transitioning seamlessly into the bar area, characterized by its dark wood and masculine feel.

The captivating atmosphere of The Country Club significantly enhances the overall experience, second only to the exceptional food and service. Chef Chris warmly

introduced himself before presenting us with some signature Country Club delights. Seated at a banquette beneath the magnolia blossoms, our server, Lily, promptly took our cocktail orders. Renée opted for the Ponchatula Porch Sipper, a delightful concoction of strawberry and white peach tea infused with gin, lemon, and mint, which won her over from the first sip. I gravitated towards the Hugo Gurl Spritz, featuring St. Germain Elderflower, sparkling wine, mint, and soda—a perfect choice for its refreshing taste, especially on a hot New Orleans day. Then came the food, and WOW, what a culinary experience it was! Chef Chris treated us to an abundant

array of scrumptious dishes, starting with three exquisite small plates. I was pleasantly surprised by the unique flavor of the Boudin Boulettes, distinct from any Boudin I had tasted before. Filled with a savory mixture of rice and pork shoulder and served with Creole mustard and pepper jelly, the harmonious blend of flavors made it a delightful dish. As for the Crab Beignets, they were an instant hit with Renée (and myself). Unlike any I had tried elsewhere, these beignets were filled with succulent Blue Crab meat and sofrito mascarpone, served with saffron aioli—an indulgence fit for heavenly dining. I have a penchant for salads bursting with diverse components, and the Strawberry and Pickled Mirliton Salad did not disappoint. Tossed with greens and a rice wine vinaigrette and topped with sliced strawberries, candied walnuts, goat cheese, sweet onion, and chunks of Mirliton pickled in a zesty mixture of sugar, red wine vinegar, and pepper flakes, it transcended the ordinary salad experience, offering a tantalizing medley of flavors and textures, and the red pepper in the mirliton gave the whole salad an unexpected, but right amount of kick.

The Filet Mignon, however, is a meal that will remain etched in our memory for quite some time. This center cut of beef, adorned with tasso marchand de vin and caramelized onion, was cooked to a perfect medium rare—a choice I wouldn’t have made, but one that turned out to be ideal for this culinary masterpiece. The Filet Mignon at The Country Club embodied everything one seeks in a perfect steak: tenderness, juiciness, and an explosion of flavor. It was accompanied by French potato puree drizzled with the marchand de vin and caramelized onion, and it was nothing short of extreme comfort food. This main event was, without a doubt, absolute perfection.

Despite being stuffed, we couldn’t resist indulging in Affogato and Lemon Tiramisu for dessert. Renée loved the Affogato, a delightful blend of Sambucca ice cream, hot fudge, and espresso. Meanwhile, I savored every bite of the Lemon Tiramisu, with its creamy mascarpone, lemon curd, and Limoncello-soaked lady fingers.

Our drive home was filled with excited chatter about our experience at The Country Club—from the charming Creole cottage to the impeccable service and delectable food. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

Cheers to Summer with Louisiana Rum

I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN introduced to a delicious rum distilled in our state, made from 100% Grade A sugarcane molasses. Out of Pointe Coupee, Oxbow Rum Distillery distills unfiltered rums in small batches; their rum has no sweeteners or additives. The Oxbow Estate Rum is very smooth; you can taste the sugar cane with every sip.

Rum is complex, smooth, and delicious. It also pairs well with delicious fruit juices and purees and the South Louisiana heat. Rum originated in Barbados; however, nowadays, it is produced in nearly every major sugar-producing region of the world. Naturally, Louisiana would be an excellent fit for some great rums.

I came to love drinking Caipirinhas after traveling to Portugal last Spring. There are different variations of the drink in different parts of the country. I’m living for a NOLA Caipirinha this summer in this Louisiana heat. A NOLA Caipirinha switches out the Licor Beirão found in Portugal for the Oxbow Rhum Louisiane Cane Juice Agricole. Agricole style means the fresh-pressed cane juice is fermented within hours of harvest before being pot distilled in small batches.

NOLA CAIPIRINHA

2 teaspoons of sugar; I used brown sugar in the raw 1 lime cut into wedges.

2 ounces Oxbow Rhum Louisiane Cane Juice Agricole

Garnish: Lime wheel

Muddle the lime wedges and sugar in a double highball glass. Fill the glass with ice, add Rhum, stir, and garnish with a lime wheel.

Another summer favorite is the Strawberry Mojito, which features the Oxbow Small Batch White Rum. A great way to beat the heat and enjoy our delicious Louisiana strawberries. This is also a great drink to batch for easy serving at a pool party or a festival get-together.

STRAWBERRY MOJITO

2 ounces Oxbow Small Batch White Rum

2 strawberries cut into half

½ fresh lime cut into half

10 mint leaves

1 ounce simple syrup

4 ounces club soda

Garnish: Mint Sprig and Lime Wheel

In a mixing glass, muddle lime, strawberries, mint, and simple syrup; pour mixture into a high-ball glass. Add ice, rum, and club soda; stir and garnish with mint sprig and lime wheel.

I wanted to recreate the original Hurricane using passion fruit puree and Oxbow Rhum Louisiane Single Barrell Aged Agricole Rum. The results was nothing short of delicious.

CREOLE HURRICANE

2 ounces Oxbow Rhum Louisiane Single Barrell Aged Agricole Rum

1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice

1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice.

1 ounce passion fruit puree

1 teaspoon Bourdeaux cherry juice

Garnish: Orange wheel and Bourdeaux cherry

In a hurricane-shaped glass or highball glass filled with ice, pour the rum, all juices, and passion fruit into the glass. Stir in the cherry juice, and garnish with orange and cherry.

I made my first Rum Espresso Martini, y’all, and it was yummy. I never really thought rum and espresso were a great combination, but I was pleasantly surprised. For the rum, I used the False River Small Batch Spiced Rum.

SPICED RUM ESPRESSO-TINI

2 ounces False River Small Batch Spice Rum

2 ounces freshly brewed espresso (I used my Nespresso machine.)

3 dashes of El Guapo Pecan Chicory Bitters

½ ounce simple syrup

½ ounce coffee liqueur (Kahlua)

Garnish: 3 chocolate-covered espresso beans

Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin filled with ice. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and top with the three chocolate-covered espresso beans. The key to this drink is using freshly brewed espresso, so you get nice foam on the drink. What’s an espresso martini without the delicious frothy foam? The local El Guapo Pecan Chicory bitters really set the drink off.
