August-September 2025 issue of Inside New Orleans

Page 1

I am sad to say summer is over, and the new school year is about to begin. This means back into the family routine of school, sports, studying, and early mornings. My favorite part of summer is spending more time with my daughter, Lilette and sleeping in. And, of course, our family vacations. This summer, we headed to Dallas to watch Lilette and her team compete in the USYS Regional soccer tournament where her team came out top four in region. We also enjoyed a quick getaway to Seaside with family to celebrate my brothers 40th Birthday, a trip to St. Pete’s, and Universal Studios.

We are excited to partner with Orleans Gallery White Linen Night and our cover artist, Kloe Donley, on Saturday, August 2nd. Check out Inside New Orleans Scoop calendar starting on page 14 for exciting upcoming events, festivals, and galas in the fall.

Inside New Orleans has formed media partnerships with some dynamic local nonprofit organizations. I have always enjoyed promoting and attending local events to meet new people and help support nonprofits and local businesses.

As always, there are lots of great features in this issue.

Beginning on page 18, Inside New Orleans features our 2025 Elite Lawyers Readers Favorites List. We also feature five specialists in Women’s Health starting on page 44.

Good bye summer, and hello football and school!

On the cover

I could say, ‘Pinch me; am I in a dream?’ But no, I’m not, and I am so excited to introduce myself as your new Editor for Inside New Orleans I am a NOLA-born, Baton Rouge-raised, returning citizen. My journey back to New Orleans started three days before Hurricane Katrina. I was a freshman in the dorms at Loyola when they told us to pack up and go home; little did we know, we wouldn’t be returning until January of 2006.

That’s when my love for New Orleans solidified. The resilience, the people, the culture, the food, and humanity made the soul of this place shine a light that I could never be without, spiritually or artistically.

I’m proud to bring my Loyola and University of New Orleans education in Professional Writing and Rhetoric, and my deep love for the city, to Inside New Orleans. I am thrilled to plant roots with you here, making this magazine a space where we can continue to enjoy, learn, and pursue the culture of our vibrant city.

Let Them Eat Color

The Coronation of the Southern Queen of Baroque Pop

THERE’S NOTHING COY about a Kloe Donley painting.

To encounter a Kloe work is to be swept into a maximalist universe where glamour, modernity, and timelessness coexist in high-gloss harmony. It is all at once joyous, deliberate, unfiltered, and expertly composed.

SOUTHERN BAROQUE POP

Kloe is something of a savant. At just 25 years old, she brings a visual language with the confidence and clarity of someone far more seasoned.

Kloe, the child of two public school teachers and a New Orleans native, grew up in the world of competitive gymnastics. As an artist, she is entirely self-taught with

no early access to or connections in the art world. Since being bitten by the art bug in college, she has, and continues to, carve out a place in the art world, developing a style best described as Southern Baroque Pop.

Kloe’s work reclaims and reframes the language of pop, using saturated colors, glossy surfaces, and iconic imagery, while infusing it with the depth and complexity of Southern storytelling. Drawing on pop excess, baroque opulence, and Rococo theatricality, she builds exuberant and intimate compositions. Behind the sparkle lies a narrative rooted in memory, ritual, and place. It more than references culture. It performs it.

Her portraits of iconic women are lushly rendered in enamel-bright palettes

and layered floral patterns, accessories, and symbols that flirt with camp but ultimately are grounded in reverence. These aren’t parodies; they’re devotions, altogether playful, precise, and immaculately staged.

Each canvas is finished with a resin glaze, another self-taught technique. The finish isn’t just for shine; it acts as a mirror, pulling you in with your own reflection, creating a feedback loop of desire, aspiration, and artifice.

Like any artist attuned to the visual world, she draws inspiration from those who came before—especially women who’ve carved space for beauty and boldness in contemporary art.

One inspiration, Ashley Longshore, redefined what it is to be a Southern woman in contemporary art. Her larger-than-life persona and maximalist aesthetic opened doors for a new generation of pop artists. If Ashley Longshore’s voice is loud and satirical, leaning into spectacle, Kloe’s is lush, playful, and emotional. Her work is equally vibrant, but more intimate and devotional, playful yet deeply personal, and unironically sincere in a way that feels fresh. If Ashley cracked the doors open, then Kloe walked through in goldtasseled kitten heels, bringing grace and grit.

“I paint what I like, what I want in my house,” Kloe says. Her works are meant to dazzle, be lived with, and to evoke happiness. In an art world preoccupied with detachment, her art’s joy is a radical act. Her choice of color is engineered for impact, brushwork is refined, and discipline and technique shows beneath whimsy; rigor and skill beneath the ribbons and resin.

Each work’s resin finishing requires heat guns, curing boxes, and total environmental control. Still, the final effect feels breezy, flirtatious, and radiant. It’s her greatest illusion: making the technical look instinctual and the excessive feel inevitable.

Kloe’s subjects—Hollywood starlets,

legends, queens, country music royalty, drag queens, saints of popular culture, and popular objects—form a pantheon of feminine excellence. Her portraits transcend classical portraiture, focusing on identity, curated and layered with symbolism and hallmarks of sophistication and memory.

Kloe’s backgrounds, inspired by interior design, chinoiserie, or antique wallpaper, are built from deep dives into decorative art history. They incorporate historically accurate renderings of the most glamorous trappings of their period. These period motifs stand alone or become lush settings for a central icon. The result feels simultaneously vintage and modern, steeped in femininity.

Kloe treats her decorative pieces as structure. Like Hunt Slonem’s butterflies or Mickalene Thomas’s rhinestones, she uses the decorative as a serious visual language.

At home, there’s no separation between life and art. Her home, filled with dogs and floors coated with paint and late-night resin fumes, inspires her work. It is deeply personal. One Elvis painting was even based on her grandmother’s broken clock. “It still makes me think of her,” Kloe says. They’re not always grand narratives, but they evoke grand emotion.

The discipline, repetition, and resilience she developed during her time as a level 10 gymnast live on in her art. Indeed, being an artist is similar to being a gymnast; both demand discipline, solitude, and the quiet, repetitive toil that happens far from any audience. There’s competition, too, an undercurrent of comparison that can make the journey isolating. Just as she’d cheer on her competitors from the sidelines, she uplifts fellow artists with the same enthusiasm, celebrating their wins, encouraging their growth, and believing that one person’s success doesn’t diminish another’s.

LET THEM EAT COLOR

All of this—the drama, the joy, the discipline, the heart—comes together in Let Them Eat Color, Kloe’s highly anticipated solo debut show, which opens on August 2 at the Orleans Gallery.

Kloe describes the show as having a “Bridgerton tea-party kind of vibe,” mixing regal imagery with her signature vivacity. Expect a cascade of pinks, teals, blues, bows, maximal ornamentation, text-based humor, and historical nods to icons, each reinterpreted through Kloe’s lens. It’s dopamine decor at its most refined.

Let Them Eat Color asks what it would mean, not only to see color, but to be consumed by it, to feast on it.

The title is invitation and provocation, nodding to Marie Antoinette while asking viewers to indulge. Donely will be your hostess, the gallery’s her parlor, and the paintings’ invitations to her feast asking: “Wouldn’t this look good in your life?”

And it would. It does. They radiate, seduce, and empower.

As the city spills into the streets for White Linen Night on August 2, Kloe Donley’s work will hold court—gilded, glimmering, and laughing softly with viewers.

And if you’re lucky enough to walk through those gallery doors, you may just find that you’re not looking at paintings anymore. You’re feasting on the color itself—alive, unafraid, and ready to be devoured.

A PASSIONATE APPROACH TO PERSONAL INJURY LAW

When you suffer from a catastrophic injury, you ultimately have to live with the effects for the rest of your life. The 12th anniversary of Tommy Badeaux’s car wreck just passed in early July, and parts of it still feel like

yesterday. “Having been in a horrific collision myself— breaking my neck and arm, splitting my head open, injuring my lung,” Tommy explains, is an experience that gives him a unique perspective into his clients’ situations.

Tommy was able to turn lemons into lemonade, converting his negative experience into something positive. He understands his clients, and his sentiment towards them is genuine. He feels a deep sense of accomplishment when he can help people in their most vulnerable moments.

For his many successes, Tommy has been recognized as a Super Lawyer Rising Star since 2020 and a New Orleans Top Lawyer since 2017. While grateful for his accolades, he’s most proud of how they reflect his clients’ wins.

MORRIS BART, ATTORNEYS AT LAW

Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice, and Workers’ Compensation

LEAVING A LEGAL LEGACY AND LAY IMPACT

Returning Elite Lawyer Morris Bart is no stranger to our community. In fact, since his legal career launched in 1978, Morris has been the poster lawyer for Louisiana Personal Injury Law. His popularity can only be explained by the ambitious nature he inherited from his father. “My father, who was in real estate and a student of marketing, would say ‘Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell, and advertise!’”

After graduating from Loyola Law School, Morris’s love for community grew alongside his ambitious work ethic. He

expanded his firm, Morris Bart Attorneys at Law, to seek justice for all types of personal injury cases. His dedication to his clients’ success is reflected in his numerous accolades, including Gambit Weekly’s Best Attorney, New Orleans City Business Leadership in Law, and the New Orleans Council for Community & Justice Weiss Award.

And, if you are looking to find Morris Bart’s impact on New Orleans, look beyond the billboards. Morris is a top philanthropist, donating over a million dollars to support Second Harvest Food Bank. He has also partnered with the Pelicans NBA Team for multiple causes, including Bart’s Flight School, which encouraged students to receive ‘B’s or Better!’ to earn a special basketball clinic.

SERVING THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY

For John Casey Cowley, owner of EL ABOGADO, the spark that ignited his passion for the law came unexpectedly—in a college acting class, delivering the iconic courtroom monologue from A Few Good Men. But while others pursued the stage, Casey found his calling not in performance, but in purpose. That’s when he knew, he wouldn’t play a lawyer. He’d become one.

The deeper inspiration came from his father. In 1994, Casey joined him on a service trip to Guatemala—his first of many. That experience opened his eyes and his heart, anchoring his career in service and justice. Later, while studying law at LSU, he had another transformative experience with the opportunity to study in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As a young gringo from New Orleans, this exposure shifted his worldview and solidified his desire to advocate for Hispanic communities.

“I love being a voice for the Hispanic community,” Casey says. “It’s not just about law—it’s about walking with people through difficult moments, understanding their journey, and standing up for what’s fair and just.”

And he doesn’t just talk the talk. Casey drives his Mobile Law Center directly into neighborhoods, offering free legal guidance at community events and inspiring young people to see themselves as future leaders. His commitment shows up in partnerships with organizations like Son of a Saint, The Pro Bono Project, and countless grassroots efforts.

When the work gets heavy—as it often does— Casey Cowley reminds himself: the real weight is carried by those fighting for their families, their rights, and their futures. “The pressure I feel is a privilege,” he reflects. “Because it means I’m in a position to help.”

PRACTICING FAMILY LAW WITH GRACE AND TENACITY

After years in insurance defense, attorney Carolyn Hennesy felt drawn to a more meaningful practice and transitioned to family law, where she could meet the growing need she saw for compassionate, dedicated counsel in emotionally complex situations. The change in legal specialty proved to be the right one for Carolyn. “I derived a great deal of satisfaction from being able to help my clients in a way that I had not before in my prior field,” she reflects.

Navigating the intricate layers of family law, Carolyn balances legal strategy with compassion, prioritizing resolution over conflict, particularly in cases involving children, though she is always ready to bring any matter to a judge when the situation requires it. Equally important, and key qualities she believes make a strong family lawyer are patience and wisdom. Years of helping clients see the bigger picture have given Carolyn both. “Understanding that the work I am doing will affect my clients long after they have left my office means having the patience to show them the future, despite their focus on the immediate

issues,” she explains.

Carolyn Hennesy guides her clients through challenging crossroads with compassion and understanding. Her work is rooted not only in legal skill but also a profound commitment to assisting families move forward to a better future.

J. GARRISON JORDAN, CHEHARDY SHERMAN WILLIAMS

Criminal Defense, Family, & Personal Injury

DEFENDING THE DEFENSELESS

Two strong entities run through John Garrison “Garry” Jordan’s blood: family and the law. He’s a secondgeneration attorney, married to a lawyer, and spends his time pursuing legislation close to his heart.

After practicing criminal defense law for 33 years, his takeaway continues to be fighting for “Davids among Goliaths,” always defending the underdog. As a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel in the USDC – Eastern District, he represents defendants who are unable to afford private lawyers.

His most personal pursuit is his and his wife Mary Ellen’s lobbying efforts to pass the Louisiana Revised Statute 14:502 in memory of their late son Graham, who suffered an accidental overdose of fentanyl while attending LSU. This statute would mandate that an individual who witnesses an individual sustaining serious bodily injury,

such as an overdose, simply report it and seek medical assistance for the injured party. “If we can help other parents from living this nightmare, all of our work will have been worth it.”

In the courtroom or the Capital, Garry Jordan channels his passion into protecting the vulnerable and making sure no voice is silenced.

KIRK

Real Estate Law

CLIENTS ARE PEOPLE FIRST

Real estate attorney Kirk Frosch was in his final year of college when his car was hit by a man who had just been thrown out of Bennigan’s for disorderly conduct. The driver was charged with a hit-and-run offense. The man’s insurance paid for the repair of Kirk’s car, and then requested that Kirk support him in asking the DA to dismiss the hit-and-run charge; Kirk agreed to help.

No good deed go unpunished, however, and the man turned around and sued Kirk, saying he had fabricated the entire story.

Having endured the frustration of his hit-and-run ordeal, Kirk saw a future in providing others with assistance in their times of need. Recalling this realization, Kirk reflects, “I felt helpless. No one in my family knew an attorney. When I did find an attorney, he helped me get the case dismissed. I was so relieved and appreciative that entering Loyola

University School of Law felt like the right path.”

Today, this Perry Mason fan, husband, and dad of twin boys, has been practicing real estate law for 24 years, specializing in residential and commercial closings. Helping others through legal circumstances, just as he was once helped during a difficult time, is something Kirk Frosch considers a blessing.

LINDSEY S. OLSEN, ATTORNEY AT LAW Family Law, Trusts, and Estate Planning

AN ADVOCATE AND AN ALLY FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Lindsey Olsen always knew she wanted to be a lawyer. From the moment she began her studies at Loyola Law School, she dove headfirst into her legal passion for practicing family law by taking a job at the Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic.

Her expertise in family law has gained her recognition as one of the top attorneys in the Greater New Orleans area. This year, she was voted Best Family Law Attorney on the Northshore by the Times-Picayune. Although her ten years in family law have brought a great deal of fulfillment, especially in advocating for clients who are unable to for themselves, she admits it’s likely one of the most emotionally demanding areas of law. And though she enjoys the fast pace and challenges that come with it, she’s cognizant about setting boundaries with her clients and creating a more harmonious work/ life balance.

Ranked as a Top Rated Business and Commercial Attorney, Amanda Butler Schley has more than a decade of experience representing boutique hotels, restaurateurs, familyowned businesses, breweries, artists, CEOs and entrepreneurs. In her almost 15 years of practice, she has become skilled at spotting legal issues and pitfalls at each stage of the business life cycle, from inception to rapid growth to successful exit. She nurtures and mentors her clients to succeed beyond their wildest dreams, resolving hundreds of complex legal issues along the way. But legal leverage doesn’t require spending a fortune on legal fees—it simply requires consistency. Meeting with your attorney monthly for as little as an hour is an invaluable tool for gaining legal leverage which is built over time, not overnight.

Amanda founded New Orleans-based Business Law Group, a boutique business services law firm in New Orleans, Louisiana. The team serves as a primary resource and partner in all aspects of their clients’ business development from start up through the growth phase and beyond. The decision to start her own firm came after Amanda and her now-husband Rob, decided to do something “crazy”: They sold their respective homes in New Orleans, and bought and moved onto a 42-foot sailboat, which they named the “Stay Foolish,” after the famous Steve Jobs quote: “Stay foolish, stay hungry.” Amanda and Rob set sail and documented their whole incredible adventure aboard the Stay Foolish on their social media accounts. Since then, Amanda’s leap of faith in her own life has helped her clients take educated risks and gain legal leverage: the key to long term success and happiness in their businesses.

With a focus on representing creatives, Amanda’s passion is helping her clients succeed and live their big dreams. Amanda offers invaluable and authentic insight to her clients. For Amanda, authenticity counts, and she wanted to be the kind of lawyer who has “been there and done that.” “Business Law Group dreams big and our legacy is to help others do the same,” Amanda says. “Together with our clients, Business Law Group is part of something bigger—we bring vitality and hope to Louisiana.”

Because education is vital in meeting client goals, the firm regularly hosts complimentary dinner seminars and client education opportunities that simplify complex topics, such as taxes and retirement planning. “An educated client is an empowered one,” Nick adds.

Rather than focusing solely on investment outcomes, Nick and his team prioritize helping clients keep more of what they’ve earned through personalized, tax-efficient, and sound financial planning. “We believe wealth planning should evolve with every stage of life,” says Nick. Whether working with pre-retirees, or retirees, Messina’s Wealth Management tailors each strategy to reflect not only financial goals but the values, legacy wishes, and lifestyle of the client. Staying ahead of economic shifts, market changes, and tax laws is a responsibility that Nick consistently considers with great care. Equally as important, the Messina’s team collaborates with top companies monitoring changes to protect and grow client assets.

For Nick, the numbers encountered in his work are far more than just numbers. They represent the lives, the futures and the impact made on his clients. Emphasising that, Nick shares, “There’s nothing more rewarding than watching a client realize they can retire comfortably, support a loved one, or leave a legacy without uncertainty.”

Thus, Messina’s Wealth Management measures its success by the trust and peace of mind they provide for their clients.

When most people think of insurance, they sigh, thinking of how awful the premiums are and how daunting it is to find coverage that isn’t astronomically high in Southeast Louisiana. Our agency thinks of insurance as a challenge that needs to be accepted. Our growing team thrives on finding innovative ways to insure your valuable assets at a lower cost than the competition. After larger corporations with service centers abroad have bought out many agencies, our agency is dedicated to staying local. We pride ourselves on superior customer service and educating our clients on the exposures and options that must protect them. Insurance is a legal contract, and it is important to have someone on your side who understands the implications of all the forms and endorsements that make up a policy. We are here to help guide you through that process, one policy at a time.

He imparts these values upon his students. “Our specialty is more than just obstetrics and gynecology— it’s medicine. AN ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN’S HEART HEALTH

Growing up, Dr. Dominique Williams’ commitment to medicine was shaped by her mother, a devoted nurse. “I was exposed to medicine at a young age… During the summer months, I’d go to work with her. I became very passionate about the health sciences and decided to pursue medicine,” Dr. Williams recalls. This experience sparked a lifelong interest in the sciences and inspired her to pursue a career where she could make a real impact.

Since 2012, Dr. Williams has combined expertise and compassion in her approach to patient care. During her studies at Baylor College of Medicine and her training in internal medicine and cardiology at Washington University in St. Louis, she developed a profound passion for women’s heart disease. Today, she empowers patients to take an active role in their care, building trust by listening, clearly communicating, and striving for a deeper understanding of each patient’s unique journey.

Honored with the Knowlton Incentive for Excellence Award, she views her greatest successes as the trust and progress shared with her patients. “Medicine can be overwhelming. Having a doctor that you trust and can openly communicate with is important. Always advocate for yourself.”

Outside of her practice, she’s a passionate advocate for maternal morbidity and mortality, lending her leadership to the American Heart Association’s Maternal Health Equity Research Network. And to reinforce her belief in holistic well-being, she renews her energy through reading, fitness, and quality time with family, friends, and her dogs.

AFTER SIX ROUNDS OF CHEMOTHERAPY, 30 rounds of radiation, a double mystectomy, and some more, Amanda Miranda was ready for a reconstruction. That’s when her oncologist recommended Dr. John Guste, who is both a breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgeon.

Breast cancer has always run in Amanda’s family. It has been an ongoing journey of mammograms and testing, even though every woman in her family has tested negative for the BRCA gene. Nine months after her last mammogram, she felt a large lump while showering. After a biopsy, she was diagnosed with stage two, Active Right Breast Cancer, a form that is estrogen receptor positive (ER+), progesterone receptor positive (PR+), and HER2 positive (HER2+).

Medical Condition:

Together, Dr. Guste and Amanda customized a plan. She received a state-of-theart procedure called Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap reconstruction to restore natural breast form after a mastectomy. Like Amanda, many people need radiation therapy as part of

their cancer treatment. Because of this, Dr. Guste needed to place a right-sided tissue expander to prepare her breast. After she finished her radiation treatments, Dr. Guste removed the expander and performed the DIEP. This procedure uses her own abdominal tissue for a more natural and lasting result. In the final stage of her reconstruction, Dr. Guste performed ‘cosmetic tailoring’ or refining symmetry to enhance her overall appearance.

Today, Amanda is in remission and so thankful to put that chapter behind her. “I lost my hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, breasts, and ovaries.” she remembers. “I felt so unattractive and I didn’t know if I would ever feel good again. Dr. Guste gave me my body back, but even better than I could have dreamed. He never made me feel like a cancer patient.” Instead, Amanda felt like a plastic surgery patient, looking for the best cosmetic outcome. “Dr. Guste is a true artist with a divine gift to help women with breast cancer. I would also consider him a real friend.”

& Marriage

Francie & Webster

When Francie’s roommate introduced her to Webster Pluscht, a friend from Tulane’s undergraduate program, the rest was history! The two wed in a whimsical Garden District wedding, captured beautifully by the Brocato Photography Collective.

Alongside her bridesmaids at the Windsor Court, Francie prepared for her big day with Hair by Beth NOLA and Jessica Carnley. Elegant in her dream Monique Lulier Dahlia wedding dress, embroidered with delicate floral patterns, Francie was the vision of southern grace; both demure and contemporary, wearing a similarly patterned, long-sleeve bolero shrug during the ceremony at Christ Church Cathedral, which she shed for the reception. Bridesmaids complemented her in full-length, blush dresses, and the groom and groomsmen looked dapper in tuxedos.

Herbivore Floral Designs created an atmosphere, with pops of green and pink, that highlighted Francie’s wedding dress.

As the ceremony concluded, with prayers offered by family members,

guests were escorted via second line to The Elms Mansion, conveniently located next door. There, on the twinkle-light-lit courtyard, the garden party ambiance continued.

Live band Got Groove created traditional and contemporary mashups, blending songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter. The couple’s first dance was the classic “Stand By Me,” father and the bride danced to “Brown Eyed Girl,” and the mother and groom danced to “What a Wonderful World.”

Guests enjoyed pass-around hors d’oeuvres and traditional buffet stations, including an oyster shucker, tenderloin, and more.

Bittersweet Confections created a traditional almond frosting wedding cake–an homage to the cakes served at their parents’ weddings. As a surprise, the groom’s cake was a chocolate and white icing Yeti Cooler with the groom’s fishing logo printed across the cake.

Following a honeymoon at a Sedona spa, Francie and Webster are enjoying life as husband and wife, with their roots firmly planted in NOLA.

Greta Hudson Honsberger, a contributing writer for Inside New Orleans, shares her thoughts on...whatever is on her mind. From book reviews to other musings, one thing is certain: it will always be thought-provoking and fun.

Tennessee Williams’ New Orleans, Where Desire Will Always Live

As a writer and card-carrying bluestocking, I am aware of how fortunate we are to have inherited New Orleans’ rich and colorful literary legacy. To walk these streets is to follow in the footsteps of literary giants. As such, in the upcoming issues, I will dive into some iconic New Orleans writers and some lesser-known ones who made our fair city a part of their lives and work.

I can’t hear the high-pitched screech of a streetcar and not think of Tennessee Williams and the tragic and fragile Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar Named Desire. Tennessee Williams, who called New Orleans his spiritual home and muse, arrived in his twenties, making his home on Toulouse Street in the French Quarter, where he lived and wrote intermittently until his death.

The haunting words and complex emotions of A Streetcar Named Desire were found in the sultry corners of the French Quarter apartment, as well as other famous haunts, including the Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Bar, where he was said to enjoy eavesdropping on conversations.

Williams’s love for New Orleans was welldocumented in his work. A Streetcar Named Desire, without a doubt, reflects his affinity for the Crescent City; however, the less famous Vieux Carré and Suddenly Last Summer are also two works that vividly reveal his great passion for New Orleans. Although these two plays differ in structure and tone, they are both steeped in the spirit of the city and reveal the profound connection Tennessee Williams felt to its debauchery, strangeness, and emotional transparency: three characteristics that drew him back for decades.

In Vieux Carré, Williams looks to his earliest memories of New Orleans, setting the play in a weathered French Quarter boarding house similar to his apartment on Toulouse Street. Suddenly Last Summer doesn’t take place entirely in the city, but its characters,

dripping in Southern elegance, are unquestionably New Orleans natives.

The simple words of Blanche still make me pause when she speaks of a New Orleans that today doesn’t exist. “They told me to take a streetcar named Desire, and then transfer to one called Cemeteries and ride six blocks and get off at Elysian Fields!” These iconic words outline a transit route that is long gone, but still part of the area’s vernacular. Dig a little deeper into the text and the literary metaphors; you’ll see these streetcar stops could symbolize Blanche’s tragic, timely spiral: Desire as the passion leading to emotional doom; Cemeteries, obviously, death; and Elysian Fields, the afterlife. Referencing these symbolic streetcar stops is a forever reminder that, for Mr. Tennessee Williams, New Orleans was never just a setting, but also a feeling. It was (and is) a feeling that gets into bones, creeps into hearts, and never really lets go.

As the great thief of time hurls the world into a cold and contemporary existence, it is a gift to claim Tennessee Williams as New Orleans’ own. He captures the countless contradictions, the nostalgic scraps of the past, and the charms of New Orleans, where, regardless of the swift pass of time, they live forever.

Anna is excited to welcome you during August and September for this special menu, curated by Executive Chef Peter Isaac and Chef de Cuisine John Trinh. There are times when going out to eat can be very expensive, but during these two months, Briquette’s menu prices

are extremely reasonable and attainable. Enjoy fabulous, handcrafted cocktails and a curated wine list that won’t break your pocketbook. For the past seven years, including this year, Briquette has received the Wine Spectator Award for Excellence, so we know their selection is top-notch! Stop in for a drink or dinner before or after White Linen Night. It is conveniently located in the Warehouse District, a few steps away from the galleries and festivities on Saturday, August 2nd. Briquette is also housed in the former Rodd Brothers Molasses Refinery, which dates from the 1800s. Take a stroll and experience both their COOLinary menu and their Happy Hour daily from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM. While you’re dining in luxury fit for a king, you won’t feel like you’ve spent a fortune. You’ll also feel right at home in their inviting bar. Satisfy your tastebuds, and savor this delicious experience.
