A Summer Book Review Ordinary Grace by
William Kent Krueger
SINCE THE SUMMER is upon us again, and that means time to read more, I decided I would offer my two cents on a book that I recently read. I read a lot of books. Some have substance, while others have absolutely none. That works for me because I love any kind of story, and once I start a book, my OCD demands I finish it. Thus, when I read something that stands out, I take note. Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger stood out to me. I like a mystery or unexpected twist, and with that, I love odd and unforgettable characters. This book is complete with both.
Set in a small Minnesota town during the summer of 1961, the story is told through the eyes of 13-year-old Frank Drum, whose world is upended by a series of tragic events that shake his family and community to their core. Frank’s father, Nathan, is a Methodist minister whose enduring faith in God and mankind and wisdom gave me Atticus Finch vibes from the very beginning. Minister Nathan Drum, with his own secret struggles from World War II, serves as the foundation and source of inner conflict for Frank as he confronts the devastating realities of loss, guilt, and, inevitably, forgiveness and understanding.
Krueger’s style allows the story’s emotional weight to unfold while weaving in spiritual themes with a cast of quirky characters, including a stuttering younger brother, a troubled alcoholic War friend of their father, a
local bully whose downright cruelty stirs up all kinds of tension, and neighbors whose secrets slowly come to light, which I didn’t see coming, frankly. As Frank is pulled deeper into an ugly adult world, he struggles with questions of life and death, justice and mercy, God’s presence, or absence, as he often believes, while people suffer. Ordinary Grace deep-dives into the complexity and beauty of faith and the resilience of humans as they face inexplicable tragedy. It’s a novel that exceeds genre. It is not just a mystery; it’s a thoughtful look at what it means to grow up, to endure, and to find grace in unexpected and often ordinary places.
The Art of Doing
How Tony and Tracey Mose Built ESOM
by Cayman Clevenger
THE BOW OF A CARGO SHIP, a metaphorical skyscraper, glides down Tchoupitoulas, casting a shadow over the unassuming warehouse Tony and Tracey Mose share as a studio space. Inside, I step into the imaginative world of ESOM, which comes together in many different media—a creative cornucopia of artistic instruments, all caps off and ready to go.
The allure of Tony and Tracey Mose is not just in the vibrant canvases or the sculptural silhouettes they create. The allure lies in everything—every stroke, every space, every exchange of the artists infused with belief—belief in beauty, hard work, each other, and the calling that birthed ESOM, an
art brand and love story rolled into one.
Tony Mose, known as ESOM in the art world, creates paintings that don’t just hang—they command space. His style blends spontaneity and structure, mystery and movement, with a distinct voice rooted in both abstraction and raw figuration. Long before his work filled galleries on Julia, Royal, and Magazine Streets, Tony was a boy in Cottonport, Louisiana, sketching figures in kindergarten while classmates drew smiley faces. He won his first art contest in fourth grade with a gasoline-thinned house paint piece that smelled so strong it became “interactive art,” as he now jokes. Even through a Gulf War deployment
and a stint managing a Banana Republic, Tony never let go of his dream. Along the way, he sharpened his skills in perspective, proportion, and purpose, building the foundation for the artist he is today.
At a turning point in his life, Tony Mose was flying home to Louisiana to set up a new Banana Republic store in Baton Rouge, but was dreaming of leaping headfirst into an art career. A missed flight landed him next to a clairvoyant, who invited him to ask any question. Jokingly, he asked, “What should I name my business?” Without knowing his name, she replied, “ESOM!”—a moment of magic that changed everything.
Despite his skepticism, Tony found himself drawn to the clairvoyant’s words, probing further with cautious interest, asking her where he would find what he needed to start his career. She responded obliquely, her words layered with elusive meaning: “In a forest of crayons.” At the time, he took her predictions in stride, doubting the clairvoyant’s abilities and perhaps sanity. But, days later, walking through an unassuming shed in Baton Rouge, he discovered hundreds of old doors, stacked and sorted by color— pink, blue, orange, green—a rainbow in wood, seared into his memory. A “forest of crayons,” the color-coded door became his first canvas. ESOM’s first pieces were sold out of a truck bed in New Orleans, for $300 a piece, with every last one spoken for. One of these original works still graces the wall of the esteemed restaurant GW Fins to this day.
Tony’s figures—long-limbed, often crowned, drenched in bold, unrepentant strokes—are less portraits than declarations. Tony explains: “Everyone’s the king or queen of their own world. So I give them their crown.” To the casual observer, that symbol is reminiscent of Basquiat. But for Tony, the origin is far more personal: it’s Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, the book he couldn’t afford as a boy but carried
in his mind ever since. That crown, sketched by a child with big dreams and oil-stained fingers, still sits atop his work today.
His figurative works have a transcendent quality. Tony’s works have an individual character by mixing media and reaching for a feeling or emotion rather than painting from a reference. “I paint what I see and what I feel—and for that, I need everything within reach. It’s a dance with materials: spray paint, charcoal, dirty brushes, acrylic paint, lids open, scraps off the floor—whatever the moment calls for,” he notes.
Tony shares his life, studio, and spotlight with his wife, Tracey Mose. Though ESOM graces the front of their galleries, Tracey is a force all her own. A photographer, painter, and creative director in every sense, Tracey’s work hums with the structure and soul of the city. Her “Urban Expressionism” series transforms New Orleans itself into a mosaic of form and feeling. Telephone wires, iron grates, and water meter covers allow her to see rhythm and movement in the mundane, extracting the architecture of emotion from the background of daily life. She photographs the streets obsessively—walkabouts, she calls them—and from those images emerge compositions that feel like jazz: improvised, kinetic, and deeply rooted in place.
Tracey’s abstract works have earned her a loyal following of contemporary art enthusiasts—decorators, designers, and fans alike. “My work is about how the old and new live together,” Tracey says. If the city can do it—if these buildings can learn to coexist— maybe we can, too.”
One piece, an all-black canvas layered with matte and gloss, was inspired by a moment at dusk in the Quarter. A street sweeper had
sprayed a crow, and its wings, suddenly slick with water and refracted light, revealed glints of violet, copper, and oil-slick blue. “I didn’t want to paint the bird,” Tracey says, “I wanted to paint the moment.” And she did.
Tony and Tracey make more than paintings. They build worlds and provide the work that has become the background of cherished memories in homes around the country. Their collaborative pieces blend Tracey’s structural eye and abstraction with Tony’s figurative boldness and attention to detail. The result is hybrid work that’s deeply intimate, deeply New Orleans, and utterly their own.
For all the passion poured into their art, perhaps the true secret of their success is what surrounds it: that belief. “Fifty percent of art,” Tony says, “is believing in yourself.” The rest, he shared, is “getting it into the world,” which is where Tracey
shines. With Tracey at the helm, ESOM is a masterclass in the often difficult art business. She has helped turn ESOM into more than a studio or a brand—it’s a movement and a belief system. Every client becomes part of the story.
In all their success, Tracey and Tony know the value of giving back to their community. They are quietly mentoring a generation of young creatives. Their greatest pride is watching those around them grow into better artists, better business people, better humans.
In the end, ESOM feels like a vocation, and like the art, Tony and Tracey’s greater calling seems to be to share their art, and the joy it brings, with as many folks as possible.
This dynamic duo’s work can be viewed at their galleries on Royal, Julia, and Magazine, located in the heart of New Orleans’ art centers.

Their extensive surgical expertise enables them to deliver advanced, integrated procedures with optimal safety and efficiency. Patients often elect to undergo combination surgeries such as rhinoplasty, breast enhancement, and gluteal contouring in a single session. This approach reduces overall recovery time, minimizes costs, and streamlines the experience without compromising care.
One area in which Jansen, Tandon, Guste Plastic Surgery stands out is breast reconstruction. Whether restoring form after mastectomy or correcting previous procedures, the surgeons offer the latest in reconstruction techniques:
• Natural Tissue (Autologous) Reconstruction: Utilizing the patient’s
own tissue, typically from the abdomen (DIEP flap), thigh (PAP flap), or lower back (lumbar flap) to recreate a soft, natural breast with long-lasting results.
• Implant-Based Reconstruction: Using saline or silicone implants to rebuild breast volume with refined shape and symmetry.
• Hybrid Techniques: Combining implants with natural tissue reconstruction methods to enhance volume, shape, and support, offering patients the benefits of both approaches.
Drs. Jansen, Tandon, and Guste are not only skilled in these procedures but are committed to staying at the forefront of reconstructive innovation. Their collaborative approach means each surgical plan is customized, whether the patient seeks aesthetic refinement or is navigating the emotional and physical journey of reconstruction after cancer.
Equally important to surgical excellence is the level of care provided before and after the procedure. Patients are seen multiple times prior to surgery to ensure thorough preparation, and postoperative care is handled directly by the physicians themselves. “We strive to be there every step of the way,” says Dr. Guste. Our patients know they’re supported throughout the entire process.
The result is not just exceptional surgical outcomes, but a patient experience defined by trust, clarity, and compassion. From the first consultation to final recovery, the surgeons at Jansen, Tandon, Guste Plastic Surgery deliver care that is as thoughtful and refined as the results they produce.

New Orleanians know that there is no place like home and I am certainly no exception! Dominican High School and NOCCA are my beloved high school alma maters, and I finished my education at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA - home of Steel Magnolias! Two months before Hurricane Katrina, I moved to New York City where I stayed until well after the Saints won the Super Bowl. It was living in New York during the 2007-2008 financial crisis that initially piqued my interest in the stock market.
My husband and I chose Edward Jones as a place to build wealth for ourselves, which quickly led me to become an Edward Jones financial advisor with an interest in assisting our growing local freelance community. Learning about my clients’ individual needs is something I enjoy so that together, we can develop a strategy to help achieve long-term financial goals. Whether you want to plan for retirement, save for college, reduce your tax bills or need help with estate considerations, you can expect personalized service and customized investment strategies instead of the latest investment fads. Because Edward Jones is a privately owned company, I truly work for my clients – not shareholders – when giving advice and creating strategies.
My husband, Derek - an audio mixer for film and television and I are parents to Scarlett and Grey and our family wouldn’t be complete without our rescue dogs, Baby Colston and Buster. I am also actively involved in the Ecole Bilingue and Arden Cahill parent Communities.
Riding in Cleopatra and marching with the Krewe of Dolly are some of my favorite pastimes during my favorite season, Mardi Gras! When not riding or walking, you can find our family on any parade route or at one of the thousands of Louisiana festivals. Together, we love to travel, cheer on our beloved Saints, and soak up everything that New Orleans and Old Gretna have to offer... especially the food! I formerly served as the president of the St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Moms’ Club and currently belong to The Touchdown Club of New Orleans, Fidelity Bank POWER, and the Irish Network New Orleans.

Our agency thinks of insurance as a challenge that needs to be accepted. Our growing team thrives on finding innovative ways to insure your valuable assets at a lower cost than the competition. After larger corporations with service centers abroad have bought out many agencies, our agency is dedicated to staying local. We pride ourselves on superior customer service and educating our clients on the exposures and options that must protect them. Insurance is a legal contract, and it is important to have someone on your side who understands the implications of all the forms and endorsements that make up a policy. We are here to help guide you through that process, one policy at a time.

Royd Anderson
WRITER AND FILMMAKER
Dedicated historian and documentarian Royd Anderson has made it his mission to shed light on Louisiana’s forgotten tragedies. Released on Mother’s Day, his powerful documentary on the 1999 Mother’s Day bus crash, where 22 souls were lost, is the worst vehicular accident in the state’s history and led to national safety reforms in commercial bus travel.
“Mother’s Day Bus Crash on 610” has sparked a resurgence in public interest and advocacy for a permanent memorial at City Park, where the tragedy occurred. Despite spending five years advocating for an entirely self-funded permanent monument, the project still faces silence and delays from park leadership. Not giving up, however, Royd’s voice will continue to raise awareness through the media he produces, driving the effort to bring the memorial to fruition. In an exciting step forward, Royd is set to meet with City Park leadership on May 27.
Living out his stated perspective, “Let’s use our talents for the greater good,” Royd Anderson’s work, featuring a subsequent book on the bus crash tragedy, is far more than history for him. It’s his calling to honor lives and inspire meaningful change.

IN Love & Marriage
Chase & Kalysta
After nearly two years of planning, Chase and Kalysta McDougal said, “I do,” in a stunning ceremony full of emotion and elegant touches, surrounded by natural beauty in the Jasmine Courtyard of The Greenwood—A Southern Hotel Property.
A picture of grace and elegance, Kalysta wore wore a breathtaking three-piece Saint Bridal ensemble from Unbridaled New Orleans, combining a structured corset, silky underskirt, and dramatic tulle overskirt: an 18th-century-meetsmodern dream. Her bridesmaids wore flowing pale yellow Shona Joy gowns, while the groom and his groomsmen donned classic tuxedos from Perlis New Orleans, a sentimental nod to Chase’s late grandfather.
Ever After Floral was entrusted to create the all-important florals, and they did not disappoint. For the ceremony, timeless ivory blooms with soft pops of blush created a romantic atmosphere. Four large orbs on pedestals framed the altar beautifully, showcasing hydrangeas, roses, blush tulips, and white phalaenopsis orchids—the couple’s favorite flower. Reception florals softened the palette further with delicate blends of pink and cream, continuing the elegance.
The reception in the Grand Oaks Ballroom, Acorn Room, and Acorn Terrace featured cuisine from Chef Alex Harrell of the Southern Hotel, including favorites such as short ribs, blackened chicken Alfredo, and creative Cajun bites. Cocoa Bean Bakery in Hammond crafted a stunning five-tier cake, artfully adorned with delicate wafer-paper orchids and roses that echoed the romantic florals of the day.
The Pan String Quartet set the mood with traditional wedding pieces for the ceremony and cocktail hour. The band The Bends kept the dance floor full while guests relaxed under a 400-year-old oak.
Wedding coordinator Cristen Quick of Let’s Make Plans didn’t miss a beat in ensuring every detail was perfect and unforgettable.
Photographer Emily Green made everyone feel comfortable while she captured every beautiful moment.
A heartfelt moment came when Kalysta walked down the aisle with her father and locked eyes with Chase, both overcome with emotion. To her groom, Kalysta looked like a vision straight out of a movie. After making their vows, their blissful expressions said it all as they made their way down the aisle together as husband and wife.

Summer Eats
After a few months off, I’m back. In this issue, I’m talking steaks and two wonderful restaurants that serve up grilled meat like no other. Brasa South American Steakhouse and GAIA Seafood & Steakhouse are creating quite the buzz around town, and I am still dreaming about the amazing meals I experienced at these two restaurants.
Nestled in the heart of downtown New Orleans at Canal Place, Brasa South American Steakhouse is redefining the city’s culinary landscape with its vibrant homage to the asado traditions of Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina. Opened in March 2024, this sophisticated yet approachable restaurant is the brainchild of local restaurateurs Edgar Caro and Antonio Mata, whose passion for South American flavors and open-fire cooking has created a dining experience that’s as bold as it is unforgettable.
The downtown location, situated at 365 Canal Street, is a strategic move to capture both locals and tourists, with its proximity to the bustling Caesars New Orleans and major hotels like the Four Seasons. The space has been completely reimagined, shedding the dark, clubby vibe of Morton’s for a bright, airy aesthetic. Tropical plants by Luna Botanicals, rattan and wicker
furnishings, and a bank of windows overlooking Canal Street create a welcoming atmosphere that feels both upscale and relaxed. A glassed-in Himalayan salt room showcases dry-aged meats, while a central bar and lounge glow with energy, staying open later for drinks and socializing.
At Brasa, the heart of the kitchen beats with live-fire cooking, a nod to the open-flame techniques Caro learned from his grandfather’s butcher shop on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. While steak is the star, the menu ventures far beyond the grill. Seafood plays a prominent role, with offerings like chargrilled oysters with bone marrow, Peruvian-style tuna ceviche with leche de tigre, and towering seafood platters featuring raw oysters, shrimp remoulade, and lobster cocktail.
During our dining experience, we were treated to the amazing tuna ceviche and the anticuchos, a popular Peruvian street food featuring skewered beef heart with filet mignon in a flavorful blend of spices and herbs. It was served with two types of amazing chimichurri sauces. Our main dishes included the star of the show— the dry-aged tomahawk ribeye cooked to medium-rare perfection.
Sides at Brasa are equally inventive, moving beyond traditional steakhouse fare. Grilled carrots with goat cheese, honey, and chili crisp were one of the best things we have eaten in a long time. Equally satisfying were

the cornmeal dumplings, which featured an amazing combination of roasted corn, iced in corn butter and corn stock. For dessert, we were transported to the Caribbean with the Flan de Caramel, which featured roasted pineapple ice cream, grilled pineapple, and coconut lime cookie.
The drinks at Brasa are also high-end. Lead bartender Luke Davidson kept the drinks coming, and he kept outdoing himself after each round. Signature drinks include the “Two to Mango” with orange, mint, and candied mango and the “La Rosa,” which features passion fruit. Both of these drinks were delightful and definitely transported our taste buds to a tropical island.
A trip to Brasa requires diving into its extensive and impressive wine list and cocktail menu.
Our server, Guillermo, was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive to our every need. He and the entire staff made our meal a truly memorable experience. We highly recommend Brasa if you are craving something more than just your average steakhouse.
Next up, and not to be outdone, is the equally delicious Gaia Seafood & Steakhouse. Tucked into the Lower Garden District at 1820 St. Charles Avenue, Gaia Steakhouse has been turning heads since its opening in October 2023. This upscale, chef-driven restaurant, led by restaurateur Murat Nalcioglu and executive >>
chef Cameron “Cam” Chatelain, blends premium global meats, innovative seafood, and a touch of New Orleans charm into a dining experience that’s as theatrical as it is flavorful. Housed in the former Melting Pot space, Gaia’s striking renovation and ambitious menu make it a standout in the city’s competitive steakhouse scene.
Murat Nalcioglu, a Turkish native with two decades of experience at the Ritz-Carlton and alongside celebrity chefs like Charlie Palmer and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, brings a worldly perspective to Gaia. Inspired by his love for New Orleans, where he’s been a frequent visitor for 20 years, Nalcioglu spent eight months transforming the 175-seat space into a modern, eclectic haven.
Gaia’s menu is a celebration of premium ingredients and culinary craftsmanship. Steaks sourced from Certified Prime, American Wagyu, Australian Wagyu, and Japanese A5+ Wagyu are grilled over charcoal embers and finished in a wood-fired oven, ensuring a smoky, succulent bite.
Chef Murat decided to surprise us during our meal, so no menu was necessary. We indulged in the beef carpaccio served table-side with herbs, Parmesan cheese, and olive oil. We were then treated to the Gaia salad, a fresh summer-style salad featuring strawberries, pineapples, almonds, blue cheese, chia, and a raspberry walnut vinaigrette. Next up was the crab cake featuring 90% lump crabmeat with a house-made remoulade and a pineapple salsa. If that was not enough, Chef Murat prepared the “Butcher’s Delight,” featuring tender filet with a truffle au jus. No knife was needed. After we devoured this portion, certain our culinary journey was complete, out came more, and we were not complaining. Chef Murat’s magnus opus this evening was the tomahawk bone-in ribeye. This mouthwatering cut of meat was dry-aged for six weeks and was coated in a Dijon mustard marinade for two days. It was served sliced and topped with a mint and caper chimichurri sauce.
Sides like crawfish mac & cheese and spinach au gratin perfectly complement the main dishes. Desserts, a point of pride, included a specially made pistachio gelato made by none other than Creole Creamery. What a treat!

Tavi Brings Rich Levantine Flavors to Covington
AT TAVI, MODERN MIDDLE EASTERN CUISINE meets small-town charm in an inviting and stylish setting tucked into downtown Covington on New Hampshire Street. The space is warm and contemporary, anchored by an open kitchen and a glowing wood-fired oven that turns out pillowy, golden pita bread—served warm and irresistible, perfect for diving into the restaurant’s standout hummus selections.
Among them, the Fried Chicken Hummus is a musttry: crisp, juicy chicken set atop a bed of velvety hummus, finished with a sweet-and-spicy date salsa verde and a hit of Tunisian spice, making a fantastic taste combination.
Lighter fare like the Israeli Salad offers a colorful, refreshing mix of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, red onion, and Bulgarian feta tossed in preserved lemon vinaigrette. Order the chicken or lamb with this explosive salad and have the perfect meal.
Tavi’s lamb offerings are another highlight, especially the slow-cooked lamb shank glazed in pomegranate and served with fragrant saffron rice. For something more casual but no less flavorful, the lamb kofta kebab delivers with complexity, richness, and spice, paired with carrot muhammara and tahini.
The equally thoughtful cocktail program features Mediterranean-inspired drinks that complement the menu’s bold flavors. The Lemon Pomegranate Soda is a popular pick—light, tart, and refreshing, but anything from the cocktail menu is superb.
Whether covering all of your tasting desires, sharing plates with friends, or enjoying a date night, Tavi offers a delightful, welcoming dining experience with the bold and unique flavors one can only find in the vibrant spirit of Levantine cooking.
