OCTOBER: A TIME FOR WORK AND REFLECTION IN GEORGIA
In Central and South Georgia, October has always been a key month. It is harvesting season, a period that reflects the effort of farmers, workers, and families who sustain much of the region’s economy. Agriculture remains a major driver of jobs and development, and its results remind us of the value of consistent hard work.
But this month also invites us to look beyond the fields. The harvest is a mirror of community life: what we build together translates into stability, growth, and opportunity. Schools, businesses, churches, and local organizations all form part of a network that defines the strength of our region. In a time of economic and social challenges, October is the right moment to evaluate what we have achieved and what still needs to be done. Cooperation across communities, mutual respect, and active participation are seeds we must continue to cultivate if we want to secure a stronger future for everyone.
The lesson of this season is clear: shared work brings results. And the responsibility to build a better tomorrow belongs to all of us, regardless of origin, language, or profession.

En el centro y sur de Georgia, octubre siempre ha sido un mes clave. The project features two climate-controlled buildings connected by an open-air pavilion, offering restrooms, locker rooms, concessions, storage space, and a large paved parking lot designed for buses and major gatherings.
UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT DR. CHRISTOPHER BLAKE EMPHASIZED THAT SEVERAL EVENTS ARE ALREADY SCHEDULED, INCLUDING THE SIAC COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE, THE GEORGIA INDEPENDENT ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION, AND THE CHERRY BLOSSOM 5K. “THE TIMING OF LAUNCHING THIS COULD NOT BE BETTER,” HE SAID.

MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF SERVICE
Since opening in 2001, PAWS has rescued more than 900 animals. Gomez, who has volunteered for three years, described the situation as heartbreaking: “I’ve poured my heart and soul into this rescue, and to see it possibly go downhill is very sad.”
IMPACT ON VOLUNTEERS
If the shelter cannot secure a new space, “The walks by the lakes, the playtime out back, the sense of community—those things would disappear until we find another place.”
Shift leader Melissa Hanson emphasized that the need remains:
“Many rescues are doing great work, but they’re all full. That means we’re still needed.” She urged people to help by donating, spreading the word, or connecting the shelter with a suitable property.

The agency will deploy a new group of special agents empowered to investigate civil and criminal violations tied to fraud in its own caseload. These “1811” agents will carry firearms, issue bonds, conduct arrests, and order expedited removals under 8 U.S.C. § 1225, according to DHS.
