Macon-Bibb prepares for a major road infrastructure transformation
Mayor Lester Miller unveils plan to pave 25 years’ worth of roads in just 4 years
With historic investment and cutting-edge technology, the county launches a new era of road improvements under the “Paving the Way” program.
During his annual State of the Community Address, Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller introduced an ambitious infrastructure plan aimed at revitalizing the county’s roads over the coming years. The “Paving the Way” program, partially funded by the newly approved SPLOST sales tax, will be the cornerstone of this transformation.
“Envision hundreds of miles of roads repaved or repaired thanks to our Paving the Way program. That’s why I’m asking commissioners to approve a bond in May for up to 25 million dollars, allowing MaconBibb to pave 25 years’ worth of roads in the next 4 years,” announced the mayor to loud applause.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
OVER 1,100 MILES EVALUATED: STREETSCAN, A LEADER IN ROAD ASSESSMENT, REVIEWED 1,124.57 MILES OF PAVED COUNTY ROADS USING LIDAR TECHNOLOGY, 360° IMAGING, AND AIPOWERED ANALYSIS.
DATA-DRIVEN PRIORITIES: THE EVALUATION WILL IDENTIFY THE WORST ROADS AND HELP SET A PRIORITIZED PAVING SCHEDULE.
RESULTS WITHIN 3 TO 4 MONTHS: REPORTS WILL INCLUDE A PAVEMENT CONDITION INDEX (PCI), TYPES OF ROAD DAMAGE (CRACKS, POTHOLES, ETC.), AND 360 IMAGERY FOR EACH STREET.
CONTRACTORS INVOLVED
Work has been carried out by various contractors including C.W. Matthews, Mid-States Striping, Professional Paving Services, and Reeves Construction. With funding and planning underway, Macon-Bibb is on track for a historic transformation of its roadway system. The coming months will be crucial in determining which roads will benefit next from this bold initiative.
“FOR TOO MANY YEARS, A LACK OF FUNDING MEANT OUR ROADS DETERIORATED FASTER THAN WE COULD FIX THEM,” SAID MILLER. “WE’VE ALREADY INVESTED MILLIONS AND STARTED CATCHING UP BY FOCUSING ON THE WORST ROADS—BUT NOW WE NEED TO DECIDE WHICH ONES COME NEXT.” IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE INITIATIVE, ABOUT 15 MILLION DOLLARS WERE ALLOCATED FROM THE GENERAL FUND, SPLOST, AND STATE LMIG GRANTS—NEARLY FIVE TIMES MORE THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS.

•Además, calles como Jeffersonville Road, Masseyville Road, Recreation Road, Riggins Mill Road y 7th Street también han recibido mejoras con diferentes niveles de repavimentación o parches.

Mercer desarrollará proyecto para incluir a niños neurodivergentes en la adoración
Universidad de Georgia recibe 1.25 millones de dólares para crear recursos inclusivos
La Escuela de Música Townsend liderará una iniciativa nacional para mejorar la participación de niños con condiciones neurológicas diversas en espacios religiosos.
La Universidad Mercer ha recibido una subvención de 1.25 millones de dólares de la fundación Lilly Endowment Inc. para desarrollar un proyecto que busca enriquecer la experiencia de adoración de niños neurodivergentes a través de la música y el arte.

Construction begins on Veterans Middle School, set to open in 2027
The Houston County School District officially broke ground on the new Veterans Middle School last Friday with a ceremony at the future site in Kathleen, marking a key step in addressing population growth in southern Houston County.
The facility will span over 160,000 square feet and feature 60 classrooms, athletic fields, agricultural program areas, and a media center.
Designed by PBK Architects and built by Parrish Construction Group, the school will reflect a new, student-focused layout aimed at maximizing functionality and minimizing wasted space.
“This is one of the most tangible ways we can respond to the community’s growth,”
said Superintendent Dr. Mark Scott. He noted that while current middle schools in Bonaire and Perry aren’t yet over capacity, modular classrooms have been necessary to keep up with enrollment.
To reduce traffic congestion, the main entrance for the new school will be on Piney Grove Road. Veterans High School traffic will continue to flow through Pamela Greenway Drive on Old Perry Road.
Funded by the 2022 Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-SPLOST), the school is expected to be completed in Fall 2027. This will be the district’s first new middle school since Mossy Creek Middle opened in 2007.

Warner Robins has moved its public utility payment kiosk to an outdoor location, giving residents round-the-clock access for quick and convenient transactions without entering the building.
Warner Robins residents now have a more accessible and convenient option to pay for public utility services. City officials have announced the relocation of the utility payment kiosk, now placed outside City Hall and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The new location allows users to make payments without stepping inside the government building.
The kiosk only accepts debit and credit cards and is designed to provide fast, secure, and simple transactions.
“This added convenience is the result of teamwork between our General Administration and Community & Economic Development departments, working
together to make city services more accessible for everyone in Warner Robins,” said the city administration in an official statement.
While convenience is a priority, the city reminded users that there is a small transaction fee when paying with a debit or credit card, whether at the kiosk or inside at the customer service counter.
There are also no-fee options available: residents may choose to pay by check or cash inside the building to avoid the fee.
In addition to the kiosk, the city encourages the use of its mobile application, available for Apple devices, as a modern and user-friendly alternative for managing payments.

The 7,900-square-foot establishment becomes the second Texas Roadhouse in Central Georgia, joining the location in Macon. In addition to its culinary appeal, the restaurant also brought an economic boost to the area by hiring nearly 200 people in both full-time and part-time positions. In a strong response to the growing issue of chronic absenteeism, the State of Georgia has enacted SB 123, a groundbreaking law designed to reduce the number of students who miss school frequently.
On April 29, Governor Brian Kemp officially signed the legislation, calling it a crucial step forward. “This law strengthens our schools and ensures a brighter future for Georgia students,” Kemp said during the announcement.
A WIDESPREAD ISSUE ACROSS GEORGIA SCHOOLS
According to the Georgia Department of Education, 21.3% of students—approximately 360,000 children—were classified as chronically absent in 2024, having missed at least 10% of school days. That rate is more than double the 12% reported in 2019. Officials cite lingering impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic as a major factor.
Open Burning Banned in Central and South Georgia Through September
The measure aims to reduce air pollution and will remain in effect through September 30 in 54 Georgia counties.
As of May 1, the Summer Open Burning Ban is in effect across multiple counties in central and South Georgia, including Bibb, Houston, Peach, Crawford, and Jones. The regulation, enforced by the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) and the Environmental Protection Division (EPD), prohibits the burning of yard and land-clearing debris during the summer to help reduce high ozone levels.
Activities such as burning leaves, branches, and brush piles are not allowed. Recreational campfires, barbecues, and certain agricultural or forestryrelated burns are permitted only under specific
