Ithink we all have to get real good at being uncomfortable. Shrinking to expand. Losing to gain. We live in a paradoxical world — one of push and pull. Discomfort is a slingshot; only when we are pulled back can we spring forward. And I’m learning that the key to unlocking a world beyond our imagination starts and ends with one word: identity.

THE FIRST TIME I TRULY QUESTIONED MINE WAS AT 18

I had spent my whole life in a world I could predict. I danced in routines — literally and metaphorically — that I knew by heart. I found success, yes, but through anxiety, self-sacrifice, and a constant fear that I wasn’t enough. I didn’t know how to name it at the time, but I was living out a version of myself I built for external approval. And it worked — until it didn’t.

In the span of just three months after starting college, my carefully constructed world collapsed. I went through a breakup that unearthed every buried insecurity. I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus — excessive fluid in the brain — and required emergency surgery. I faced a two-tumor cancer scare. I was forced to leave school on medical leave. The person I had spent so long building — the overachiever, the perfectionist, the girl who always kept it together — disappeared overnight. All that remained was a shell of a person and a mind in pieces.

BUT THAT SHELL BECAME SACRED GROUND

What I thought was the end of everything turned out to be the beginning of becoming. I realized that the identities we chase — the roles, the accolades, the image — are not who we are. They’re costumes. And sometimes life has to tear them off so we can finally feel the truth of our own skin.

I had to shrink. I had to sit still. I had to let go of the girl who needed everyone to think she was okay, even when she wasn’t. I had to learn that worth isn’t something you prove — it’s something you remember. We’re taught that growth is linear. Climb the ladder. Chase the dream. Never slow down. But I think the bravest thing a woman can do is stop — and ask herself if what she’s chasing is actually in alignment with who she is. I wasn’t. And my body knew it before my mind did.

Empowerment isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s soft. Sometimes it’s saying no. Sometimes it’s sitting in a room with no noise, no applause, and learning to be proud anyway. Sometimes it’s shrinking — not because you’re small, but because you’re being shaped into something bigger than before.

So here’s what I’ve learned, and maybe what I hope every woman learns: don’t be afraid to let it all fall apart. Don’t be afraid to be uncomfortable. Discomfort doesn’t mean you’re off track — it may be proof you’re finally on the right one. There’s power in surrender. There’s expansion in stillness. There’s freedom beyond identity.

And sometimes the most powerful version of you is waiting just on the other side of the mess.

n the vast and often predictable universe of Hollywood, some names shine with a light of their own, beacons guiding the viewer toward more complex and stimulating territories. Jake Gyllenhaal (Los Angeles, 1980) is, without a doubt, one of those beacons. Far from conforming to the mold of the traditional heartthrob or the one-dimensional action hero, Gyllenhaal has sculpted a career that feels as personal as it is universal, exploring the abysses of the male psyche with brutal honesty and a dedication that chills the blood while, at the same time, moving one to the core.

His filmography isn’t just a collection of movies; it’s a canvas where directors with a strong visual imprint have found in his face and body the perfect vehicle for their most feverish nightmares and dreams.

Because to speak of Gyllenhaal is to speak of transformation, of a relentless search for nuance, for the precise gesture that reveals an inner universe. He’s the kind of actor who isn’t afraid to make himself unattractive, to slim down to the bone, or to bulk up with muscle if the role requires it. But, crucially, these physical metamorphoses are always a reflection of an internal convulsion, a tangible manifestation of the emotional storm his characters endure.

And this is where his magic lies: Gyllenhaal represents a masculine cinema that doesn’t shy away from emotional depth but embraces it, questions it, and projects it with a visual force that is often hypnotic. Born into a family with cinema in its veins (father director, Stephen Gyllenhaal; mother screenwriter, Naomi Foner; sister actress, Maggie Gyllenhaal), young Jake quickly found his path. After small roles, it was with “October Sky” (1999) that we began to glimpse that mix of sensitivity and intensity that would become his trademark. But the real wake-up call, the one that made us sit up and say “keep an eye on this kid,” came with “Donnie Darko” (2001). In the skin of that disturbed and visionary teenager, Gyllenhaal displayed a strange, melancholic, almost prophetic charisma. Richard Kelly’s film, now a cult classic, found in its protagonist the ideal interpreter to navigate its existential labyrinths and unsettling atmosphere. Even then, his gaze possessed that quality of seeing beyond, of connecting with something the rest of us don’t perceive. It was the seed of a career that would delve, time and again, into the ambiguous, the unsettling.

THE CONSECRATION: “BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN” AND SILENT PAIN

If “Donnie Darko” was the introduction, “Brokeback Mountain” (2005) was the definitive consecration. Under Ang Lee’s exquisite direction, Gyllenhaal delivered one of the most heartbreaking and subtle performances of the decade. His Jack Twist, opposite Heath Ledger’s Ennis Del Mar, was a whirlwind of longing, vitality, and a profound sadness—that of an impossible love in a hostile world. The film, visually breathtaking thanks to Rodrigo Prieto’s cinematography, found in its protagonists’ faces the perfect emotional landscape. Gyllenhaal didn’t need grand gestures; his pain was felt in the tension of his jaw, in the way his eyes desperately sought connection. The Oscar nomination was the logical consequence, but beyond awards, “Brokeback Mountain” proved that Jake was capable of carrying the weight of complex stories on his shoulders, endowing them with a pulsating humanity. It was proof that on-screen masculinity could be vulnerable, tender, and tragic, all at once. What followed was a conscious dive into roles that explored the darker, more obsessive facets of the human being, often hand-in-hand with directors possessing

a powerful and disturbing aesthetic vision. With David Fincher in “Zodiac” (2007), Gyllenhaal melded with Robert Graysmith, the cartoonist obsessed with deciphering the Zodiac killer’s identity. His physical transformation, subtle but

effective, accompanied his character’s descent into a spiral. Fincher, a master of the visually impeccable thriller, knew how to extract that quality of feverish, almost morbid intelligence from Gyllenhaal. And then came Denis Villeneuve,

and their collaboration exploded in two consecutive masterpieces that solidified Gyllenhaal’s image as the go-to actor for psychological thrillers with a visual pedigree. In “Prisoners” (2013), his Detective Loki was an enigma himself: tattooed, with an almost imperceptible nervous blink, dragging a past we could only guess at. The oppressive atmosphere and Roger Deakins’ cold color palette found their emotional anchor in Gyllenhaal’s contained yet electrifying performance. Every close-up of his face was a study in tension and determination.

The following year, “Enemy” (2013), also by Villeneuve and shot by Nicolas Boland, took things to an even more surreal and stylized terrain. Playing two physically identical men with opposing personalities, Gyllenhaal offered an acting tour de force. The sepia-toned cinematography, Toronto’s brutalist architecture, and the dreamlike atmosphere created a visually striking framework for a study on identity, duality, and male anxiety. Watching Gyllenhaal interact with himself, unfolding into nuances, was a masterclass in subtlety and control. Who was Adam and who was Anthony? The question resonates thanks to the actor’s ability to imbue each with a distinct, palpable internal truth.

If anything defines Gyllenhaal, it’s his courage to embrace extreme transformation. And nowhere was this more evident than in “Nightcrawler” (2014). Directed by Dan Gilroy, Gyllenhaal shed pounds and any hint of warmth to embody Lou Bloom, that sociopathic arriviste who finds his particular American dream in the scavenger journalism of nocturnal crime scenes. With wide, unblinking eyes, a cadaverous thinness, and a smile that chilled the blood, Bloom was the personification of unbridled ambition in the age of the image. The film, with its nocturnal and feverish aesthetic, owes much of its impact to Gyllenhaal’s monstrously magnetic creation. It was impossible to look away from him, no matter how much he repelled us.

And as if to demonstrate his chameleonic range, the following year he donned boxing gloves in

Antoine Fuqua’s “Southpaw” (2015). Here, the transformation was towards hyper-masculinity, contained rage, and redemption through physical pain. Although the film trod more conventional paths, Gyllenhaal’s commitment was, once again, total. His Billy Hope was a wounded beast, and every punch in the ring seemed to resonate with an inner fury that the actor knew how to channel.

VISUAL STYLE AND THE PIERCING GAZE

It’s impossible to dissociate Jake Gyllenhaal’s career from the directors with strong visual personalities he has chosen to work with. Tom Ford, with his perverse elegance, cast him in “Nocturnal Animals” (2016), a neonoir stylized to the extreme where

Gyllenhaal played a dual role (or the fictionalized version of one) with a vulnerability that contrasted with the aesthetic coldness of the ensemble. His pain, as the abandoned writer whose novel becomes a metaphor for his revenge, was almost unbearable to watch, precisely because of the restraint with which he expressed it. Even in more seemingly light or commercial projects, like “SpiderMan: Far From Home” (2019), Gyllenhaal brought a layer of complexity to his Mysterio, playing with deception and spectacle in a way that felt consistent with his taste for ambiguous characters. And in films like “Stronger” (2017), where he played Jeff Bauman, a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing, he once again demonstrated his ability to embody trauma and resilience without falling into easy sentimentality, relying on a physicality and expression that conveyed truth. Gyllenhaal’s gaze. Let’s pause here

for a moment. Few contemporary actors possess eyes capable of communicating so much with so little. They can be cold and calculating (Lou Bloom), tender and longing (Jack Twist), tormented and obsessive (Detective Loki, Robert Graysmith), or profoundly wounded (Tony Hastings in “Nocturnal Animals”). Directors know this, and their films often revel in close-ups that exploit this almost supernatural ability to transmit complex inner universes without needing dialogue. It’s a visual tool in itself.

A VIBRANT PRESENT AND AN OPEN FUTURE

More recent films like “The Guilty” (2021), a thriller of mounting tension that rests almost entirely on his shoulders and his ability to convey panic and desperation through a phone call, or Michael Bay’s adrenaline-fueled “Ambulance” (2022)—where, even amidst the trademark pyrotechnic chaos, Gyllenhaal finds room for nuance— demonstrate that his appetite for risk and intensity remains intact. Not to mention his foray into the remake of a classic like “Road House” (2024), where his physical transformation and commitment to the character of Dalton are once again a topic of conversation, proving he understands cinema as a spectacle that can also (and should) have a soul.

Jake Gyllenhaal is not just an actor; he is a force of cinematic nature. A performer who has chosen the difficult path, that of constant exploration, of characters who force us to look where we’d rather not. He has redefined, in a way, what it means to be a male lead in the 21st century: someone who can be strong without being impenetrable, vulnerable without being weak, and visually magnetic without needing to conform to superficial canons. His legacy, still under construction, is already that of a fundamental actor for understanding contemporary cinema that seeks raw emotion and visual power. And the best part, we’re convinced, is always yet to come. Because with Gyllenhaal, the only certainty is surprise, intensity, and that unmistakable style that is already his trademark. Applause.

THE LOST BOOK OF THOTH AND THE POWER OF THE EGYPTIAN GODS

In the previous article, I left you with the question: Does a book of wisdom and magic exist?

The answer is yes, but I won’t leave you with just the short answer. Legend has it that there is a book where magic, wisdom, and universal knowledge reside. This book was written by Thoth (the god of wisdom, knowledge, writing, among other things). It was a gift he wanted to bestow upon humanity, so he entrusted it to his priests. Knowing the power they held in their hands, the priests decided to offer it to the Nile to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. This book is none other than the Egyptian tarot. Unlike the traditional tarot, which has minor arcana such as the Three of Swords or the Four of Pentacles, the Egyptian tarot’s minor arcana include concepts like Progress, Knowledge, and Intuition. It is much more comprehensive.

Returning to the legend, there was a daring prince who sought to possess this book. His name was Neferkaptah. Through his priest, he learned of its existence and set out for the Nile near the city of Koptos to find it. When he discovered it, reaching it was no easy task, as many creatures guarded it. Using his magic to enchant them, he managed to gain access to the book. When Thoth found out, he was so enraged that he caused Neferkaptah’s wife and son to fall from the boat into the river. Although he managed to rescue them alive, his wife warned him that she had seen Thoth and that he was furious. She begged him to return the book, but he refused. Seeing that Neferkaptah would not return it, Thoth caused him to fall into the Nile and drown. The prince’s servants reported the tragedy to the pharaoh, who ordered his body to be recovered and given a burial worthy of a prince. Neferkaptah was buried with the book. In my eyes, this was an injustice— they should have returned it.

NOW, LET ME TELL YOU A LESSER-KNOWN STORY:

A long time ago, Ra ruled over Egypt, but one day, the boldest among humans decided to end Ra’s life so they could take his place. Aware of this, Ra sent his eye— Sekhmet, the lioness goddess—to eliminate them. The problem arose when Sekhmet did not stop after wiping them out. She continued killing humans because she loved the taste of their blood. Seeing this, Ra regretted his decision. Gods and humans had to join forces to stop her. They decided to take large quantities of beer and dye it red, spreading it across Egypt to make it resemble human blood. Sekhmet drank all the beer and became so intoxicated that she fell asleep.

Depending on the region of Egypt, the story ends in different ways: Sekhmet either transforms back into Bast (the cat goddess), becomes Hathor (goddess of love, among other things), or remains Sekhmet. Egyptian beliefs vary, often depicting a god with multiple aspects or considering each aspect as an independent deity.

Speaking further about Sekhmet, here is an inscription found on one of the doors of the Karnak Temple. It offers valuable insight into the Egyptian way of thinking:

“I ask only that you enter my house with respect. To serve you, I do not need your devotion, but your sincerity. Not your beliefs, but your thirst for knowledge. Enter with your vices, your fears, and your hatreds, from the greatest to the smallest. I can help you dissolve them. You may look at me and love me as a woman, as a mother, as a daughter, as a sister, as a friend—but never look at me as an authority above yourself. If your devotion to any god is greater than the one you have for the god within YOU, you offend both and offend the ONE.”

From Tenerife, Sebastián and Domagoj breathe life into unique pieces that fuse history, art, and emotion. Through Belles Curiosités, they explore cultures, noble materials, and a handcrafted approach that revalues jewelry as an emotional and artistic symbol.

LSP. Who are Sebastián MartínezOlivera and Domagoj Glavinja? Where are they from, and what are their backgrounds?

BC. Sebastián Martínez-Olivera and Domagoj Glavinja are two young entrepreneurs who started a wonderful project called Belles Curiosités over two years ago. Domagoj is originally from Dubrovnik, Croatia; his family has lived in the same region for over 600 years. Fun fact: he is the only person in the world with his full name, and only five others share his last name.

Sebastián was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, into a Spanish-Italian family with direct Canary Island heritage, specifically from Tenerife. Notably, the name Sebastián Isabelino has been passed down in his family since the 19th century. They descend from the defenders of Queen Isabella II’s cause against the Carlists during the War of Succession.

LSP. How did you get started in jewelry design, and what roles do each of you have in the business?

BC. Jewelry has been a lifelong passion for both of us. Domagoj loves men’s accessories—silver rings, white gold, and brilliant earrings like those worn by Cristiano Ronaldo. Sebastián is passionate about vintage watches, especially his 1930s Omega. The rarer and more unique, the better.

Our artistic direction is entirely collaborative. We regularly hold meetings to share ideas and develop concepts. At the same time, we each contribute our personal experience and knowledge.

LSP. What inspires your designs, and how do you turn ideas into reality?

BC. With such a vast field of inspiration and endless possibilities, it’s hard to focus on a single muse or place. We’ve traveled extensively for both work and pleasure and have experienced many cultures. Domagoj speaks four languages, and Sebastián five—something that deeply enriches the soul.

Our minds are constantly flooded with ideas. Our sketchbook is always filled with new concepts. The challenge is to develop ideas that resonate with

our clients emotionally. We start with preliminary designs, test them in various materials and finishes, and refine them. Once we select prototypes, we decide whether they’ll be one-of-a-kind pieces or part of a larger production.

LSP. What materials do you work with?

BC. We work with noble materials such as silver and gold, precious and semi-precious stones, cultured pearls, and Swarovski crystals. We also use materials common in contemporary jewelry, like pure bronze, brass, and nickel-free alloys.

LSP. How would you define the style of the jewelry you create?

BC. If we had to describe it, we’d say our pieces are bold, curious, exciting, artistic, and contemporary.

LSP. Do you think new technologies influence jewelry creation? How?

BC. Absolutely. The invention of 3D printers designed specifically for jewelry has revolutionized the industry. In the past, a goldsmith might spend days hand-carving wax to create a model. Now, a design can be made on a computer, printed in wax, and ready to cast in a matter of hours.

For now, we don’t use this technique because we believe the value of craftsmanship adds something special to each piece.

LSP. What jewelry design trends have you noticed in recent years?

BC. The jewelry world is vast. We work primarily in artistic and contemporary jewelry, which is generally not tied to mass trends. Our collections include marine-inspired designs, original Roman Empire coins, and many pieces hand-textured with 24k gold.

LSP. Do you design custom jewelry?

BC. Yes, we’ve created several custom pieces, always with unique and satisfying results. When someone requests a custom piece, it’s usually to bring a dream or vision to life—and that’s exactly what we aim to do.

LSP. I understand you ship internationally. Which countries buy from you the most?

BC. We actively ship to over 20 countries, including the U.S., Australia, and South Africa. Currently, our biggest markets are France and Belgium.

LSP. Is it difficult to ship your pieces internationally? Are there any obstacles?

BC. Unfortunately, yes. Even within Europe, it can be complicated. The Canary Islands operate under a different tax system than the rest of the EU, which means customs procedures and bureaucratic hurdles that delay shipments. The biggest challenge is the time it takes for packages to reach our customers.

LSP. How do you source your materials and where are your products made?

BC. All our materials are of European origin, sourced from countries like the UK, Greece, or Spain— especially from Barcelona, where we get our silver and gold. Our jewelry is 100% made in our workshop in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is fully equipped with specialized tools. It’s not open to the public.

LSP. What has been your best project?

BC. The best project is always the one that’s yet to come! But one special project was for a client who brought us a small piece from her late father’s watch strap. We used that bit of gold, added silver and a beautiful blue aventurine stone, and turned it into a symbolic, contemporary pendant.

LSP. What would you recommend to younger generations entering this field?

BC. Get an education—study

LSP. How has the global situation affected your field? How are you adapting to constant change?

BC. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the sector hard, especially with rings. People use a lot of hand sanitizer, which damages rhodium or gold plating.

We’ve since shifted to designing more earrings with secure closures to prevent loss when wearing masks. We also leaned into international e-commerce early on. Our website is now available in German, French, English, Spanish, and soon Italian.

LSP. What exciting projects are you working on now? Where can people find your work?

BC. We’re developing a new jewelry line called Sebastián Isabelino (Instagram: @sebastian.isabelino), which we plan to launch at the upcoming Bijorhca International Fair in Paris. While we can’t reveal much yet, we can say that it will feature original coins from the Late Roman Empire (3rd to 5th centuries), sterling silver, 24k gold, and stones like tourmalines.

This expansion—managing both Belles Curiosités and Sebastián Isabelino— will likely require us to improve our logistics. But more on that soon!

Let’s talk about meat. But no, not that pale, anonymous beef from the supermarket aisle screaming “quick fix for a Tuesday night.” Today, we dive headfirst into the carnivore’s Olympus, into that object of desire for uninhibited gourmets and hedonists: dry-aged beef. A name that evokes ancient rituals, secret chambers, and a flavor that, believe me, borders on the mystical. “Another foodie

fad?” the skeptic might ask. Well, more than a fad, it’s a revelation. Fasten your seatbelts, because this is a one-way trip to the heart of flavor.

Imagine the star of a great movie: they aren’t made in a day. They need their time, their transformation. Dry-aged meat follows a similar script. Noble cuts are selected – prime ribs, impressive porterhouses, sensational T-bones – and are granted the gift of time in refrigerated chambers that are true sanctuaries. Here, temperature (between 34°F and

37°F), humidity (around 75-85%), and almost choreographed ventilation are the directors of this masterpiece.

“And what happens in this sort of meat spa?” the curious will inquire. Well, a twofold transformation, worthy of the best special effect. First, concentrating dehydration: the air extracts water from the meat, like a director removing the superfluous to keep the essence. This process can last from 21 days, for those seeking an elegant introduction, to 60, 90, or even more than 120 days for the boldest palates and thrill-seekers. If fresh meat is a decent movie, dry-aged meat is that cult classic you rewatch a thousand times, discovering new nuances each time.

Flavor: It’s a controlled explosion. Deep, addictive umami is the base, but upon it are built notes of toasted nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts), hints of melted butter, sometimes a subtle sweetness reminiscent of a good bread crust, and even, in long aging, an elegant and complex funk that can evoke aged cheeses or wild mushrooms. It’s a true symphony.

Texture: Forget struggling with your knife. The meat surrenders, melts, it’s pure butter. Not just tender, but the next level. It’s a velvet caress versus sandpaper. The intramuscular fat, that blessed marbling, ensures every bite is juicy and memorable.

Aroma: Before it even touches the heat, the piece emits an intoxicating perfume, a blend of a noble wine cellar and damp earth. When cooked, the aroma becomes an irresistible promise, the trailer for a feast that will be etched in your memory.

A master grill chef, one of those who speaks to the meat, told us clearly: “Aging is stripping the product bare. If the base is good, you elevate it to heaven. If not, you expose its flaws. There are no tricks, no smoke and mirrors, only truth.”

Not all meat is a candidate for this stardom. Large pieces are sought, with a good outer layer of fat to act as a protective shield during the process, and generous marbling to guarantee juiciness. It’s like casting for a leading role: only the best make the cut.

Inside the aging chamber, the artisan watches diligently. Temperature is crucial

to keep undesirable bacteria at bay, although certain beneficial molds (like some Thamnidium) can appear on the surface forming the “crust” or pellicle. This dark layer, which looks like a samurai’s uniform, is trimmed before cooking, revealing the bright red treasure beneath. It’s the sacrifice of the wrapping to get to the gift. Humidity and airflow are equally vital, controlled with surgical precision.

After the patient wait, comes the climax: the grill. And here, my friends, simplicity is key. Meat of this caliber needs no makeup or disguises. Coarse salt, perhaps a touch of black pepper, and the embrace of the fire. Good wood embers or quality charcoal, or a very hot cast-iron griddle, are enough to work the final magic: that crispy, caramelized crust on the outside (hello, Maillard reaction!) and a juicy, rosy, inviting interior.

Let no one be mistaken: dry-aged beef comes at a price. The long process, product shrinkage (that water loss and trimming of the crust), specialized facilities... it all adds up. But don’t we gladly pay for a ticket to see our favorite director in the best movie theater? This is the same. It’s an investment in pure pleasure, in a sensory experience that goes beyond simple nutrition. It’s a justified indulgence, a celebration.
