SHRINKING TO GROW

GROW

When everything falls apart, the real you is born. This is the story of how shrinking isn’t weakness—it’s the prelude to power. Because sometimes, breaking is the first step to blooming.

Ithink we all have to get real good at being uncomfortable. Shrinking to expand. Losing to gain. We live in a paradoxical world — one of push and pull. Discomfort is a slingshot; only when we are pulled back can we spring forward. And I’m learning that the key to unlocking a world beyond our imagination starts and ends with one word: identity.

THE FIRST TIME I TRULY QUESTIONED MINE WAS AT 18

I had spent my whole life in a world I could predict. I danced in routines — literally and metaphorically — that I knew by heart. I found success, yes, but through anxiety, self-sacrifice, and a constant fear that I wasn’t enough. I didn’t know how to name it at the time, but I was living out a version of myself I built for external approval. And it worked — until it didn’t.

In the span of just three months after starting college, my carefully constructed world collapsed. I went through a breakup that unearthed every buried insecurity. I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus — excessive fluid in the brain — and required emergency surgery. I faced a two-tumor cancer scare. I was forced to leave school on medical leave. The person I had spent so long building — the overachiever, the perfectionist, the girl who always kept it together — disappeared overnight. All that remained was a shell of a person and a mind in pieces.

“DISCOMFORT IS A SLINGSHOT; ONLY WHEN WE ARE PULLED BACK CAN WE SPRING FORWARD”
“I WAS LIVING OUT A VERSION OF MYSELF I BUILT FOR EXTERNAL APPROVAL”

BUT THAT SHELL BECAME SACRED GROUND

What I thought was the end of everything turned out to be the beginning of becoming. I realized that the identities we chase — the roles, the accolades, the image — are not who we are. They’re costumes. And sometimes life has to tear them off so we can finally feel the truth of our own skin.

I had to shrink. I had to sit still. I had to let go of the girl who needed everyone to think she was okay, even when she wasn’t. I had to learn that worth isn’t something you prove — it’s something you remember.

We’re taught that growth is linear. Climb the ladder. Chase the dream. Never slow down. But I think the bravest thing a woman can do is stop — and ask herself if what she’s chasing is actually in alignment with who she is. I wasn’t. And my body knew it before my mind did.

Empowerment isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s soft. Sometimes it’s saying no. Sometimes it’s sitting in a room with no noise, no applause, and learning to be proud anyway. Sometimes it’s shrinking — not because you’re small, but because you’re being shaped into something bigger than before.

So here’s what I’ve learned, and maybe what I hope every woman learns: don’t be afraid to let it all fall apart. Don’t be afraid to be uncomfortable. Discomfort doesn’t mean you’re off track — it may be proof you’re finally on the right one. There’s power in surrender. There’s expansion in stillness. There’s freedom beyond identity.

And sometimes the most powerful version of you is waiting just on the other side of the mess.

TIMOTHEE CHALAMET

THE MULTIFACETED FACE OF A GENERATION IN HOLLYWOOD

The charismatic Timothée Chalamet, beloved actor and style icon, embodies millennial sensitivity in Hollywood. With roles that delve into the complexity of the human experience and a bold fashion sense, he ushers in a new era of authentic and avant-garde masculinity.

In the vibrant world of Hollywood, where talent dazzles and style sets trends, a young actor has burst onto the scene, capturing hearts and magazine covers alike: Timothée Chalamet. With a magnetic blend of youthful charm and eyes that convey deep emotion, this New Yorker with European roots has become far more than a movie star. Timothée, with his boho-chic flair and disarming naturalness, has struck a chord with a generation that craves authenticity and embraces a new understanding of masculinity—one that rejects clichés and celebrates vulnerability. We see him on the red carpet, where his fashion choices always spark conversation, and we admire him on the big screen, where each character reveals a new facet of his talent.

Join us as we explore the man behind the phenomenon—the fashion icon who defies convention and the actor who’s taken our breath away. Get ready to step into the fascinating world of Timothée Chalamet.

Born in New York in 1995, Chalamet grew up in an artistic and multicultural environment that undoubtedly shaped his worldview and approach to acting. His mother, a dancer and actress, and his father, a French editor, instilled in him an appreciation for the arts and a deep understanding of the richness that lies in cultural diversity. This strong foundation led to an early start in acting, with appearances in TV shows like Law & Order and the indie film Sweet Tooth. However, it was his role as Finn Walden in the acclaimed series Homeland that began to showcase his potential as a talent to watch.

The real turning point in Chalamet’s career came in 2017 with the release of Call Me by Your Name, the film adaptation of André Aciman’s novel, directed by Luca Guadagnino. His portrayal of Elio Perlman—a sensitive, passionate young man experiencing first love in the idyllic Italian countryside—was a torrent of restrained and explosive emotion. Critics and audiences alike were captivated by his palpable vulnerability and his ability to convey complex feelings through a glance or a telling silence. At just 22, Chalamet became the third-youngest actor ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, solidifying his meteoric rise in the industry.

Call Me by Your Name didn’t just catapult Chalamet to fame; it also set a pattern for his choice in roles. Since then, he has shown a preference for complex characters, often troubled or undergoing self-discovery. In Lady Bird (2017), he played Kyle Scheible, a musician with a careless attitude and an air of mystery that both attracts and confounds the protagonist. In Beautiful Boy (2018), he delivered a heartbreaking performance as Nic Sheff, a young man battling meth addiction, showcasing raw and moving emotional intensity.

His versatility became even more evident in projects like The King (2019), where he portrayed a young Henry V of England, navigating political intrigue and the burdens of monarchy with a mix of uncertainty and determination. In Little Women (2019), under Greta Gerwig’s direction, he brought a fresh dimension to the character of Theodore “Laurie” Laurence, a romantic and melancholic young man yearning for love and acceptance. Even in the sci-fi blockbuster Dune (2021) and its sequel, Chalamet managed to infuse his character, Paul Atreides, with a sensitivity and vulnerability that transcended the typical epic hero archetype.

Beyond his undeniable acting talent, Timothée Chalamet has emerged as an unexpected yet influential fashion icon. His red carpet style defies traditional menswear norms, opting for cutting-edge outfits, bold colors, unusual textures, and designs that often include androgynous elements. From sparkling harnesses to patterned suits and velvet ensembles, Chalamet isn’t afraid to experiment and express his individuality through fashion.

His wardrobe choices aren’t about extravagance for its own sake; they appear to be an extension of his artistic personality and his rejection of conventional labels. In a world where celebrities’ public images are often carefully curated by stylists, Chalamet seems to have an authentic voice in his fashion decisions—something that resonates deeply with a generation that values self-expression and authenticity over conformity.

“MY DREAM IS TO KEEP EVOLVING. THE SECOND YOU THINK YOU’VE FIGURED IT OUT, YOU’RE DONE”

Chalamet’s influence extends far beyond the screen and the red carpet. His emotional openness and sensitivity resonate with the millennial generation—a cohort that has come of age amid economic uncertainty, rapid social change, and growing awareness of mental health and authenticity. Through his roles and public presence, Chalamet represents a new form of masculinity in Hollywood—one not defined by toughness or emotional repression, but by vulnerability, empathy, and a willingness to feel.

His characters often explore the complexities of identity, self-discovery, and the intensity of youthful emotion. His willingness to show vulnerability onscreen—through silent tears or impassioned confessions—challenges traditional masculinity stereotypes and offers a more inclusive and emotionally intelligent model. This portrayal strikes a chord with a generation redefining gender roles and seeking role models who embrace the full spectrum of human experience.

passions, steering clear of the showiness and drama that often plague celebrity culture.

The combination of his acting prowess, fashion boldness, and palpable sensitivity has made Timothée Chalamet a cultural phenomenon who goes far beyond the “movie star” label. He represents a new wave of artists unafraid to break boundaries, explore the depth of the human condition, and challenge established norms. His impact on pop culture is undeniable, and his influence on how masculinity is perceived in Hollywood is both profound and lasting.

“I DON’T WANT TO REPEAT MYSELF. I WANT TO CONTINUE TO TAKE RISKS, TO SURPRISE PEOPLE — AND MYSELF”

Moreover, Chalamet’s interactions with fans and the press often come across as genuine and humble. Despite his rising stardom, he maintains a closeness and authenticity that set him apart from many celebrities of his caliber. His social media presence, though relatively low-key, focuses on his work and

As his career continues, with projects that challenge and expand him as an artist, it’s clear that Timothée Chalamet’s influence will only grow. His ability to connect with audiences on a deep emotional level, his willingness to take creative risks, and his undeniable authenticity have positioned him as one of the most important and resonant voices of his generation in Hollywood. In a world yearning for authenticity and genuine connection, Timothée Chalamet shines as a beacon of hope and a reminder that true strength lies in vulnerability and openness of heart. His legacy, still in the making, promises to be as multifaceted and captivating as the artist himself.

HIGH-END FRENCH PASTRY REINVENTED BY CÉDRIC GROLET

Cédric Grolet’s gourmet vision isn’t just a passing trend — it’s a whole new way of understanding pastry in the 21st century. With his radically minimalist approach, devotion to nature, and obsession with perfection, he’s achieved what few others have: transforming dessert into a total aesthetic experience that stimulates the senses and uplifts the soul.

His sculpted fruits, which look real but taste like pure fantasy, remind us that luxury doesn’t lie in excess, but in precision, intention, and respect for raw ingredients.

In a world overflowing with superficiality, Grolet invites us to look more closely, savor more slowly, and appreciate beauty in its purest form.

Grolet is the rockstar of pastry who’s turned desserts into a spectacle worthy of a fashion runway! This French genius doesn’t just make tarts — he creates sweet sculptures that look like they were picked straight off a magical tree, with a style so cool even apples would ask for his autograph. With a minimalist vibe that screams “less is more” and precision straight out of a NASA lab, Grolet has turned patisserie into a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Buckle up for this flavor rollercoaster and see how this pastry chef is flipping the world upside down, one lemon at a time!

At 39, Cédric Grolet is the name everyone loves to drop at fancy dinner parties. Born in Firminy, a town that sounds as chill as it is, he elbowed his way into the culinary world, training at Le Cordon Bleu and learning tricks from masters like Christophe Adam. But it was at Hôtel Le Meurice where his magic truly took off, becoming the MVP of desserts. In 2018, when The World’s 50 Best Restaurants named him “World’s Best Pastry Chef,” the universe knew he wasn’t playing around.

Grolet is like a DJ remixing the classics with a modern twist — he honors the rules of French pastry (hello, crispy puff pastry!) but then throws in a wild spin that leaves everyone speechless. His motto? Less sugar, more fun; less drama, more flavor. And boy, does he deliver!

If fruits could walk a red carpet, Grolet’s would be the queens of the event. His trompe-l’œil creations — desserts that look like apples, pears, or raspberries pulled from a painting — are so realistic, you’ll hesitate between biting into one or snapping a photo. Each piece is an adventure: his “Apple,” for example, is a white chocolate sphere hiding a roasted apple cream and a compote that makes you feel like you’re running through an orchard in sneakers. It’s like biting into a dream!

And don’t think Grolet sticks to the basics. Shiny mangoes like miniature suns, yuzus that sparkle like tiny bursts of joy, and guavas practically screaming “eat me!” are all part of his lineup. Each dessert is an explosion of flavor saying, “Forget the filters, I’m 100% #NoFilter.” The secret? Grolet lets the fruit shine, unmasked by unnecessary sugar. It’s like a natural flavor rave!

Behind every Grolet dessert is a lab where science and creativity high-five. This man is part sculptor, part chemist, part street artist. He uses custom 3D molds to bring his fruit illusions

to life, and every piece is assembled by hand like fine jewelry. Want to know how he makes everything so perfect? We don’t fully get it either — it’s pure magic!

Grolet is also the king of textures. His “Hazelnut” has a crunchy praline shell that leads to a mousse as light as a cloud, followed by a liquid center that bursts like a firework. And here’s the best part: he works with fresh fruit from local growers and says “no thanks” to fake flavorings. Sugar? Just a whisper, because Grolet believes real flavor should lead the show. It’s like he invented pastry for people who want indulgence without the guilt.

If pastry had a style icon, Grolet would be the equivalent of a perfectly tailored leather jacket. His look is minimalist but packed with punch — you just can’t stop staring. His boutiques, like the ultra-chic Opéra in Paris, are more like haute couture stores where pastries shine like diamonds. Forget flashy colors — Grolet uses the natural tones of fruit — juicy strawberry reds, radiant mango yellows — to create a vibe that’s pure Instagram gold.

Speaking of socials, Grolet is the king of making everyone drool online. His videos — from dessert creation to the jaw-dropping slice reveal — are addictive. Chefs, influencers, even your dessert-loving aunt are hooked on his feed. It’s like every post says, “Come, taste this, and be happy.”

Cédric Grolet hasn’t just conquered Paris — he’s made the whole world crave a slice of his magic. His boutiques in London and Dubai are like temples for dessert lovers, and his books, Fruits and Fleurs, are like guides to becoming a mini-Grolet (or at least trying). But the best part is how he’s inspired other chefs to loosen up, use local ingredients, and make pastry as cool as a sold-out

Of course, it’s not all praise. Some French purists grumble that his desserts are too modern and miss the heavy classics of the past. Others complain his creations aren’t cheap (well, duh — it’s edible haute couture!). But Grolet isn’t here to please the grumpy — he’s here to make your taste buds

As Grolet keeps opening boutiques and dreaming up new culinary mischief, one thing is clear: this man is a legend in the making. His desserts aren’t just food — they’re experiences that make you smile, dream, and yes, reach for your phone. In a complicated world, he reminds us that happiness might just come in the form of a perfectly sculpted lemon or a raspberry that tastes like

So if you’re looking for your next big treat, head to a Cédric Grolet boutique, try one of his creations, and let yourself be swept away by the sweetness. Because in his world, every dessert is a party — and we’re all invited.

“WE SEEK A COHESIVE DESIGN VISION WITH A DEFINED VISUAL LANGUAGE THAT TELLS A STORY”

I WORK OUT AND EAT CLEAN—SO

UNPACKING THE SILENT SABOTEURS

Even if you eat clean and train hard, losing weight can be more complicated than it seems. Factors like sleep, stress, and portion sizes impact your progress. Work smarter, not harder, to succeed.

You lift, you lunge, you pass on dessert. So when the scale refuses to budge, it feels personal. But here’s the truth: weight loss is more complex than a simple equation of effort in and results out. It’s not about working harder—it’s about working smarter.

Here’s what might be holding you back, even when you’re doing everything right:

HEALTHY DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN LIGHT

Avocados, almond butter, granola—nutrient-rich, yes, but also calorie-packed. Clean eating can quietly tip you into a surplus if portions aren’t dialed in. Awareness, not restriction, is the key.

01 02

THE MISSING PIECE: RESTORATIVE SLEEP

You can’t out-train poor sleep. Just one night of restlessness can throw hunger hormones into chaos, intensifying cravings and slowing metabolism. Quality sleep is the unsung hero of fat loss.

CLEAN—SO WHY CAN’T I LOSE WEIGHT?

SABOTEURS OF YOUR PROGRESS

STRESS: THE SILENT WEIGHT CLINGER

That tightly packed schedule and constant mental buzz? It’s keeping your cortisol high—and your body in fat-storage mode. Learning to slow down might just be your new superpower.

MUSCLE VS. FAT: THE SCALE CAN BE MISLEADING

You might be leaner than you think. Muscle is denser than fat, so while your weight may plateau, your body could be quietly transforming. Trust your mirror more than your scale.

03 04 05

ARE YOU EATING TOO LITTLE?

When calories drop too low, your body clings to fat as a survival tactic. It’s counterintuitive, but eating more—strategically—can reignite your metabolism.

THE TAKEAWAY:

Weight loss isn’t linear, and progress isn’t always visible on a scale. Trust the process, focus on how you feel, and remember: your body is responding to everything you do—not just your workouts and your meals.

“WEIGHT LOSS IS MORE COMPLEX THAN A SIMPLE EQUATION OF EFFORT IN AND RESULTS OUT.”

Rosalía blends flamenco and avant-garde elements, crafting a globally innovative sound and image. Her strategic collaborations and relentless experimentation position her as a disruptive artist who redefines contemporary music, bridging tradition and the future.

The air in the studio buzzes with palpable tension—a heady mix of centuries-old tradition and the electric hum of tomorrow. Rosalía Vila Tobella, or simply Rosalía to a world already chanting her name, moves with the feline grace of a seasoned bailaora and the bold vision of a sonic architect. She isn’t just reviving flamenco; she’s deconstructing it, piece by piece, and rebuilding it with 21st-century materials to create a sound and aesthetic that resonate in the most unexpected corners of the globe.

Since her breakthrough with Los Ángeles (2017)—a stark, visceral album that revisited classic flamenco with a modern sensibility—Rosalía made it clear she wasn’t walking a conventional path. Her voice, a torrent of raw emotion capable of tearing the soul with an ancestral quejío or soaring through intricate melismas, became the compass for an unprecedented musical journey. This wasn’t cultural appropriation—it was a deep immersion into her roots, launched forward into a future where stylistic boundaries blur and ultimately vanish.

With El Mal Querer (2018), the Catalan artist delivered a masterstroke. Inspired by the anonymous 13th-century Occitan novel Flamenca, the concept album wove a narrative of toxic love through a sonic tapestry blending pure flamenco with experimental electronics, urban beats, and innovative vocal arrangements. The sound of dry handclaps collided with piercing synths, flamenco choirs answered booming basslines, and Rosalía’s voice danced between fragility and unleashed power. Visually, the album was a manifesto—a reimagined flamenco aesthetic infused with modern sensibilities and powerful symbolism. The music videos, cinematic masterpieces in their own right, cemented her image as a total artist who controls every aspect of her vision.

Balmain’s strength under Rousteing lies in its ability to fuse traditional opulence with a modern, urban edge. His designs often feature structured silhouettes, intricate embellishments like embroidery and appliqués, and a vibrant color palette that radiates confidence and power. Yet this glamorous aesthetic never feels distant or unattainable. Rousteing has managed to infuse it with a youthful, energetic spirit, creating pieces that are both aspirational and relevant to the contemporary lifestyle. Innovation has been a cornerstone of Balmain’s transformation. Rousteing hasn’t simply replicated the house’s classic codes — he’s explored new techniques, materials, and presentation formats. His foray into the metaverse with NFT collections and his strategic use of social media reflect a deep understanding of the digital landscape and its potential to connect with audiences in new and exciting ways. This forward-thinking mindset has kept Balmain in the spotlight, cementing its status as a leading brand in the digital age.

THE POWER OF MORNING ROUTINES

SMALL CHANGES FOR BIG IMPACT

“A MORNING ROUTINE TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS BECOMES SUSTAINABLE BECAUSE IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE A CHORE—IT BECOMES SOMETHING YOU LOOK FORWARD TO”

5 SMALL MORNING HABITS THAT CAN CREATE BIG IMPACT

MAKE YOUR BED (YES, REALLY)

This might sound too simple to matter, but making your bed is a powerful signal to your brain that you’ve accomplished something. It creates a sense of order and starts your day on a positive note, making you more likely to stay productive.

“If you want to change the world, start by making your bed.” Admiral William H. McRaven

DRINK WATER BEFORE COFFEE

We all love a good caffeine kick, but starting the day with a glass of water hydrates your body after hours without fluids and wakes up your metabolism. It’s a tiny act of self-care that can make you feel more alert and refreshed.

STRETCH OR MOVE FOR 5 MINUTES

You don’t need a full workout session to feel the benefits of movement. A few minutes of stretching or light exercise can boost circulation, wake up stiff muscles, and release endorphins that set a positive tone for the day.

AVOID YOUR PHONE FOR THE FIRST 30 MINUTES

It’s tempting to dive straight into notifications, but starting your day on someone else’s schedule can make you feel scattered. Instead, give yourself space to wake up fully before engaging with the world. You’ll be amazed at how much calmer and more focused you feel.

5

SET A MICRO-GOAL FOR THE DAY

A micro-goal is a small, achievable task that gives your day direction. It could be as simple as “Answer that email I’ve been putting off” or “Take a 10-minute walk.” Achieving one microgoal early on builds momentum and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Good morning, and welcome to a better you! 1 2 3 4

THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF A THOUGHTFUL MORNING ROUTINE

What makes these small changes so powerful is their cumulative effect. When you start your day with a sense of purpose and intention, that energy flows into the rest of your day. Instead of reacting to challenges, you’ll find yourself responding thoughtfully. And the best part? A morning routine tailored to your needs becomes sustainable because it doesn’t feel like a chore, it becomes something you look forward to.

START WHERE YOU ARE

You don’t have to overhaul your life overnight. The key is to start small and be consistent. Pick one or two habits that resonate with you and try them for a week. Adjust as needed, and let your mornings become a time of quiet power, an anchor in the chaos of everyday life.

FINAL THOUGHTS: A BETTER DAY BEGINS WITH YOU

Your mornings belong to you. They are your opportunity to nurture yourself, set your priorities, and build momentum for the day ahead. So, whether it’s making your bed, savoring a quiet moment with your coffee, or simply breathing deeply before diving into the day, embrace the power of small changes. The impact they can create might just surprise you.

FROM THE ROYAL GUARDIAN TO THE SECRET OF ETERNITY

Discover surprising aspects of ancient Egypt: the unusual job of the “Guardian of the Pharaoh’s Anus,” the mystical power of Hathor’s sistrum, and the profound meaning of the Ankh, the legendary key of life.

In the previous article, I left you intrigued with the following question: Did you know there was a job as Guardian of the Pharaoh’s Anus? I know this must have been quite shocking to you; it was for me too when I found out. But it has its charm and quirkiness... This job was none other than that of the doctors who cared for the Pharaoh’s anus – essentially, preventing illnesses affecting the colon and rectum, such as constipation, hemorrhoids, incontinence, etc. Furthermore, they were responsible for cleaning and protecting the area they cared for. One of the things they did was administer enemas, both for maintenance and for constipation, although for the latter, they used a special liquid instead of water.

the sistrum far exceeded its importance as a musical instrument.1 It was primarily used by the priestesses of the cults with which it was associated. The sistrum, which the Egyptians called Sechechet, was a ceremonial instrument that could have two characteristic forms:

cults, part of the worship was aimed at appeasing her dangerous side, and the sistrum was shaken as a means of control.

Did you know that the Egyptians used a few drops of oil and a bowl of water to see the future? They observed the shapes the cold oil made in the water and interpreted them.

Before finishing this article, I want to tell you about a very important amulet that is also a hieroglyph:

NEXT, I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT A VERY IMPORTANT

THE SISTRUM:

It is one of the most sacred musical instruments of ancient Egypt, believed to have magical properties. It was used in the worship of the goddess Hathor (Het Heret) – Goddess of love, joy, festivity, fertility, eroticism, music, and dance.

It was designed to create the sound of the breeze hitting and blowing through papyrus reeds. But the symbolic value of

The Ankh (Pronounced Ankh). It is one of the most recognizable symbols of ancient Egypt, known as “the key of life” or “the cross of life.” It is a cross with a loop at the top, sometimes ornamented with symbols or decorative details, but most often depicted as a simple gold cross. (In truth, its exact origin or original representation is unknown). The symbol is the Egyptian hieroglyph for “life” or also for the “breath of life” (nh = ankh), and since the Egyptians believed that the earthly journey was2 only part of eternal life, the Ankh symbolized both mortal existence and life in the afterlife. It is one of the oldest symbols of Egypt, often seen alongside the djed and was symbols, carried by3 a multitude of Egyptian gods in tomb paintings and inscriptions, and used by Egyptians as amulets.

A LUCID TEAR IN THE FABRIC OF EXISTENCE

Like an unexpected sting in the skin of cinematic correctness, Poor Things bursts forth— an astonishing new offering from the unclassifiable Yorgos Lanthimos. The Greek filmmaker, renowned for his surgical dissections of the human condition, infused with comedy as dark as it is revealing, plunges us into a grotesquely beautiful and razor-sharp universe. Departing from the clinical detachment of his previous works, Lanthimos breathes wild vitality into this adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel, feeding an insatiable hunger to explore the boundaries of being and becoming.

From the very first frame, Poor Things emerges as a singular creature, a bold fusion of genres and tones that defies any label. We find ourselves in a fever-dream version of Victorian London, where science flirts with fantasy and morality teeters on the brink.

In a reimagined Victorian London, Bella Baxter, a woman resurrected with a childlike mind, embarks on a journey of sexual and social self-discovery, boldly defying patriarchal conventions with ravenous curiosity and unrestrained freedom.

In this world of impossible architecture and cotton-candy skies, Godwin Baxter— played with a genius mix of eccentricity and touching pathos by Willem Dafoe— acts as the demiurge of a creation both fascinating and unsettling: Bella Baxter. Bella, portrayed with fearless physical and emotional commitment by a

transcendent Emma Stone, is a being born from tragedy and scientific ambition. Resurrected with the brain of her own unborn child, Bella enters the world with the insatiable curiosity of an infant in an adult’s body. Her journey is a torrential dive into sensations, emotions, and social conventions, shedding, layer by layer, the prejudices and limitations imposed by a suffocating patriarchal world. The narrative unfolds not as a linear tale, but as a richly embroidered tapestry of encounters and experiences that shape Bella’s ever-evolving psyche. Her initial stay under Godwin’s care—simultaneously protective and oppressive—gives way to a liberating escape alongside Duncan Wedderburn, a hedonistic, superficially charming lawyer played with unexpected comic flair by Mark Ruffalo. This continental odyssey becomes a crucible in which Bella experiences pleasure and pain, opulence and poverty, sexual freedom and exploitation.

Lanthimos, true to his style, does not sugarcoat the rawness of these experiences. Bella’s exploration of sexuality—uninhibited and purely instinctive—is presented without shame or moral judgment, provoking a mix of fascination and unease in the viewer. Her time in a Parisian brothel, far from a fall from grace, becomes a crucial stage of her self-discovery, where she learns the value of her body and the complex dynamics of power in human relationships.

The visual presentation of Poor Things is a feast in itself, warranting full immersion into its universe. Robbie Ryan’s cinematography shifts from dreamlike black and white in the early scenes to a kaleidoscope of saturated, surreal colors during Bella’s travels, generating a constant sense of disorientation. The use of fisheye lenses and unusual angles distorts reality, emphasizing the

protagonist’s unique and ever-changing perspective. The sets—a mix of recognizable Victorian elements and architectural fantasy— enhance the feeling of a world at once familiar and entirely new.

But beyond its dazzling technical prowess, Poor Things is a profound reflection on female identity, autonomy, and the social construction of gender. Bella, stripped of conventional norms and past traumas, rebuilds herself from scratch, defying expectations and predefined roles. Her insatiable curiosity and rejection of hypocrisy make her an agent of change—a disruptive force that lays bare the absurdity of many societal rules.

The film, like the novel it’s based on, belongs to a tradition of reimagining the Frankenstein myth from a feminist lens. Bella is not a monstrous, threatening creature, but a being in

constant transformation, hungry for knowledge and experience. Her “monstrosity” lies perhaps in her refusal to conform, in her brutal honesty, and in her resistance to being tamed. Lanthimos’s signature black humor surfaces in the most unexpected moments, lightening the thematic weight and adding a layer of corrosive irony. The dialogue—often dry and direct—exposes the gulf between Bella’s innocent outlook and the adult world’s often absurd complexity. This contrast gives rise to moments of awkward hilarity, prompting reflection on the contradictions embedded in civilization.

Nevertheless, Poor Things is not without controversy. Its explicit treatment of sexuality and caustic take on power dynamics may prove challenging for some viewers. But

it is precisely in this boldness that its strength lies—in its power to provoke discomfort and ignite discussion. Ultimately, Poor Things is far more than a visual extravaganza or intellectual provocation. It is a riveting coming-of-age journey seen through the eyes of a woman who refuses to be defined by others’ expectations. It’s a celebration of individual freedom, of the relentless pursuit of knowledge, and of the power of reinvention. With Emma Stone delivering the boldest and most memorable performance of her career, Yorgos Lanthimos gifts us a torrential and subversive work—a lucid tear in the often opaque fabric of existence. A film that, like its heroine, lingers in the memory long after the screen fades to black, daring us to question our own “poor” assumptions about the world.

THE CHALLENGE

OF BEING PROFESSIONAL AND A MOM/DAD

FINDING BALANCE IN FAMILY AND WORK

A MOM/DAD

Reconciling a demanding professional life with parenthood is the great modern challenge. Keys such as accepting imperfection, setting boundaries, and prioritizing presence over perfection help build a full and balanced life between family and work.

In life, being a professional and a mom or dad can seem like a never-ending challenge. Work responsibilities and family demands often feel like two worlds competing for our attention, leaving little room for tranquility. However, this challenge is also a unique opportunity to find a balance that not only enriches our lives but also strengthens our relationships with those we love most.

Accepting that we cannot be perfect is the first step. Perfection does not exist, and pursuing it only leads to exhaustion. What really matters is being emotionally present. A young child does not need perfect parents, but rather authentic moments of connection, like an afternoon playing or a sincere hug. For a teenager, an open conversation about their concerns or your experiences weighs more than any attempt to be an ideal role model. Setting boundaries is an essential tool. Define schedules to dedicate exclusive time to family and respect them as much as you would an important meeting. For example, technology-free dinners or bedtime rituals help build stronger relationships and teach children to value what really matters.

Self-care is another fundamental pillar. When you neglect your physical and emotional

health, it is difficult to face daily challenges with patience. Exercising, meditating, or simply enjoying activities that recharge you is not a luxury, but a necessity. By taking care of yourself, you also teach your children the importance of prioritizing personal well-being.

Integrating professional and family life can be a valuable strategy. Talking to your children about your work, inviting them to participate in small tasks, or sharing your achievements and challenges not only strengthens the bond but also teaches them values such as dedication and effort. Younger children may feel proud to collaborate, while older ones will value transparency and example. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Trusting your partner, family, or friends to share responsibilities will allow you to better manage life’s demands. Fostering your children’s autonomy is also key. As they grow, giving them age-appropriate tasks not only lightens your load but also teaches them responsibility.

Balance is not about dividing yourself between work and family, but about being fully present in both areas. What your children will remember is not how much time you spent with them, but the quality of those moments. Living with intention will allow you to build a full life, where work and family are not opposites, but complementary parts of a shared story.
