As we focus on our history, it is important to remember what it is that makes us unique and to find ways to welcome new neighbors, support new businesses and to make a point to be inclusive so that our growth can bless many and be a testament to who we are in the years to come. We encourage you to continue to be kind to our visitors and look for the many new amenities that will be scattered throughout the landscape of our beautiful county. Try something new! OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND IN MEDINA COUNTY

From its official organization in 1818 to becoming the tenth fastest growing county in Ohio, Medina County has strived for over 200 years to provide residents with abundant opportunities to live, work, and play. Medina County is fortunate to have people who treasure the history and who are proud of the communities in which they live. With a population of around 182,470 as of the last census, Medina County offers three cities, six villages, and 17 townships to call home. From historic downtowns to familyoriented suburbs to rural countryside, there is something in the county for everyone!

Do you love history? There are 29 properties and districts located on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the local historical societies have activities to participate in throughout the year. The Medina County Historical Society held a capital drive to purchase and preserve the iconic

McDowell-Phillips house located at 205 S. Prospect St. in Medina. This beautiful Queen Anne Shingle-Style home was built in 1890 by R.M. McDowell. Located in the Bankers Row historic district, the house features seven fireplaces, 14 rooms, and is considered the largest house in Medina. It is a historic landmark and serves as an additional museum to house the society’s collections, as well as many significant items left by the five generations who lived there. The society also owns the John Smart House Museum located at 206 N. Elmwood Ave. in Medina. Both house-museums are open for tours at various times throughout the year.

Did you know all Medina County Veterans who possess a Veteran Identification Card are eligible to ride Medina County’s Public Transportation for free? Veteran ID cards are issued by the Medina County Recorder's Office located in the County Administration Building on the first floor.

The 273-acre Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery was opened by the Federal Government in June 2000. The cemetery is one of only 136 such cemeteries throughout the United States.

There are seven public school districts within the county and numerous private school options. The Medina County Career Center (MCCC) offers courses for high school students who want to focus on advanced career technical training and academic excellence for lifelong success. Courses are also offered to adults who want to start a new job or advance in their existing career.

We boast the Cuyahoga Community College – Brunswick University Campus and an Achievement Center, which educates those with developmental disabilities. Medina County has moved forward with the purchase of the Medina Continued on page 10

County University Center (MCUC) from the University of Akron for $2.85 million. The property, located at 6300 Technology Ln., will support the expanding needs of the MCCC, including adult education, a new nursing and paramedic program, and workforce training.

The project also benefits the Medina County Sheriff’s Office, which will gain training space. Local leaders, including Commissioners Swedyk, Hambley, and Harrison, along with State Representative Sharon Ray and MCCC Superintendent Steven Chrisman, praised the collaboration for its long-term community impact. The initiative marks a major step in enhancing education and job training in Medina County.

Medina County Park District (MCPD) connects people with nature through education and conservation, managing more than 9,000 acres that include 23 parks and preserves, over 50 trails, two nature centers, and Ohio’s largest natural inland lake — Chippewa Lake. This year, MCPD celebrates 60 years of enhancing quality of all life through education, conservation, and the protection of natural resources. To honor this milestone, the park district has planned a series of celebratory events throughout the year, and a number of new park areas and amenities will be opening to the public.

The newly constructed Medina County Courthouse opened in December 2022. The new courthouse consists of four floors and provides approximately 86,300 square feet of new space and approximately 21,000 square feet of renovated space. Constructed behind the current courthouses, the new courthouse includes the County Clerk, sally port, secure holding areas, Common Pleas Court, Juvenile and Probate courts, Juvenile Probation, and County Adult Probation. Renovations to the 1841 Courthouse, located on Medina’s Historic Public Square, were completed in 2023, creating a safer, more efficient courthouse with ample space to serve the citizens of Medina County for many years to come.

With easy access to three interstates, Medina County provides the ideal location for nearly 4,000 businesses. Interstates I-71, I-76, and I-271 provide easy access to the large

metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Akron, and Columbus. There are two federal highways and eight state routes that intersect the county. All these aid in making the average travel time to work approximately 27 minutes. Feel like taking a trip out of town? The Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the Akron-Canton Regional Airport are both under 40 minutes away! There are also two municipal airports. The Port of Cleveland, the third largest port on the Great Lakes, is located 45 minutes north on Lake Erie.

Whether you visit or spend a lifetime, Medina County can match your housing, shopping, spiritual, education, and business needs. Find more information online at medinaco.org/county-commissioners, or on Facebook at facebook.com/MedinaCountyCommissioners.

Continuing to Grow!

The team at Medina County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) focuses on attracting, retaining, and expanding businesses. The business base of Medina County is not concentrated in any one industry, and the local economy has proven that diversification of industry is the key to stability, regardless of economic climate. We are always looking to attract new businesses to Medina County, especially small, closely held, or family-owned businesses.

Through our business outreach program, we meet with over 200 companies annually to learn from their successes, anticipate their needs, and help them achieve their goals. MCEDC helps retain businesses by providing them access to financing resources, connecting them to workforce and educational partners and their programs, and negotiating local and state incentives. Medina County’s business community continues to see tremendous growth, particularly by innovative companies that have found new market niches and opened new product lines during the past year. Through a variety of partnerships, MCEDC supports businesses’ growth, allocating resources to those who need help expanding their businesses.

To combat workforce shortages and to build the county labor pool, MCEDC has created and strengthened programs aimed at keeping our high school graduates in Medina County to start their careers. Since 2022, our career coach has helped over 5,000 students explore career interests, connect to prospective employers, and find career opportunities. To support new graduates in their career paths, we developed a program awarding scholarships to students who have gained employment immediately following high school graduation to aid them in acquiring the necessary tools to start their careers. This year, we

MCEDC’s work is also paving the way for new developments on sites with existing infrastructure that had fallen into disrepair. The first round of state grants for brownfield redevelopment, awarded in 2022, provided $4.5 million for 15 building demolition projects through 2025 that have led to over $60 million in new construction, renovations, and clean land for either future development or permanent open space for community enjoyment. In 2024 and 2025, MCEDC secured another $5 million in grants that have supported the construction of the new Legacy Hotel, a new Meijer store in the City of Medina, and the anticipated restoration of the Brickyard property in Wadsworth, among other projects, that will result in over $40 million in new capital investments.

EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY, ENRICHING COMMUNITY

The Medina County Career Center (MCCC) continues to deliver on its mission: giving students—from high school to adult education—a competitive edge in both the workforce and higher education through premier career-technical programs and strong academics.

Earlier this year, MCCC took a major step forward with the construction

of a state-of-the-art fire tower for the Firefighter | EMT program. “This tower increases training opportunities for all levels of firefighters in a safer, more controlled environment,” says instructor Dave Yorko. The tower will also serve local fire departments through Adult Education | OTC, further strengthening ties between MCCC and the community it serves. Other programs are also seeing exciting upgrades. In August, the Vision Care program unveiled a modernized lab and dispensary, now located in a more visible and accessible part of the building, enhancing community services through the Bright

Eyedeas Vision Clinic.

Meanwhile, MCCC’s Adult Education | OTC is undergoing a dynamic transformation. In August 2025, first responder and medical programs moved to the newly renovated South Campus, featuring state-of-the-art labs, expanded classrooms, and community-centered spaces. On the horizon: a new LPN program coming soon!

With each initiative, MCCC continues to deliver on its promise: providing premier, career-focused education while strengthening community ties. The future is bright— MCCC is on the move.

FOSTERING LASTING CONNECTIONS

In any community, the schools represent opportunity, hope, and the focus of the residents. Medina County schools — both individually in their local communities and as a larger community across Medina County — continually provide students with opportunities to learn, grow, and become educated and engaged citizens. In countless classrooms, students and educators are creating a dynamic learning environment that inspires growth and fosters lasting connections. Across the county, a vibrant mix of academic rigor, creative arts, athletics, and leadership initiatives is redefining education and transforming the classroom experience into a true community connection.

Building upon the success of the past year, which saw Medina County ranked as the top county in the state on the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Report Cards, our schools continue to provide excellent learning environments for all students. With strong community and business partnerships across the county, all Medina County school districts have opportunities to connect learning outside the classroom to make it more meaningful and engaging. From job fairs to classroom experiences provided by industry experts to hands-on learning, students of all ages are connecting content to real-world applications more than ever before. The Medina County Career Center is no exception to this, leading the charge in preparing our students for the workforce and regularly securing top job placements for students both locally and beyond.

While we know a thriving workforce is an essential part of a successful community, Medina County Schools don’t stop there. Opportunities abound in innovative academic programs and clubs, music and art outlets, performances, and publications, as well as top-notch athletic programs. Supporting those programs are some of the best educators you’ll find anywhere — each year we receive numerous applications for the Medina County Teacher of Excellence Recognition and are continually amazed at what educators across all grade levels are achieving in their classrooms, all in the pursuit of excellence for their students. We also see the top students every year from each school in Medina County recognized at the Top Scholar Program, and are blown away by how engaged these students are in both their academics and their school and

community. Long gone are the days of students engaging in a few things just to pad their college applications or resume — these students balance more than many adults do in their daily lives and do it with passion and energy that only a child can muster.

The reader may be thinking that the above accolades could describe any county across the state. To be sure, there are myriad schools across the state who are doing amazing things, but few communities can match the academic success across all schools and provide the choices of communities — from rural Black River to suburban Brunswick and everything in between. For families in Medina County, you already know, firsthand, what Medina County has to offer. For those looking to move to Medina County, you will be hard pressed to find a stronger school community that provides excellent academic (and beyond) opportunities for students to learn and grow.

Robot-Assisted Joint Replacements

Cleveland Clinic orthopaedic surgeons at Medina Hospital specialize in robotic joint replacement surgery. When patients need a hip or knee replacement, the surgeons talk with their patients about the best surgical approach to relieve pain and restore function. The benefits of robotic surgery include:

• Less pain during recovery.

• Lower risk of infection.

• Reduced blood loss.

• Shorter hospital stays.

During robotic joint replacement surgery, surgeons use CT scans and 3D imaging to create a plan based on the unique anatomy of each patient. They use robotic instruments to place the implant for a precise fit.

Most patients spend one night in the hospital following surgery. Select patients who are healthy enough can go home the same day. Most hip replacement patients can resume regular activities within three to four

weeks and most knee replacement patients are back to normal activity in five to seven weeks.

Don’t let pain interfere with your lifestyle. Make an appointment with a Medina Hospital orthopaedic surgeon to see if you’re a candidate for robotic surgery. Call 330.721.5700.

From the first steps back to full recovery, Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital delivers world class joint care to keep you moving. Our personalized treatments are designed to rehabilitate, restore and help prevent future injuries so you can move through life with strength and confidence.

PROVIDING HOPE

Formerly known as the ADAMH Board, the Medina County Mental Health & Recovery Board’s (MHRB) mission is to decrease stigma and provide hope for a better life by assuring the availability of high-quality services in the areas of mental health, substance use, and recovery support to all Medina County residents through planning, purchasing cost effective services to the extent resources are available, coordinating, and evaluating these services.

The MHRB has invested in a wide and diverse array of services and programming through our contracted provider agencies. Dental health — It’s all in the timing…

We can all name the basics of dental health: brush, avoid sugary foods, and visit the dentist. But when it comes to achieving optimal oral health, details matter. When we eat and care for our teeth can mean the difference between health and disease.

WHEN TO BRUSH?

Brushing and flossing your teeth before bedtime is the most critical step in dental health. The food we eat forms a bacterial plaque that sits on our teeth, causing tooth decay and gum disease. Leaving plaque on your teeth overnight gives those bacteria a long, uninterrupted opportunity to do harm. For ideal prevention, dentists recommend you brush every morning and floss and brush your teeth every night before bed.

SNACKING AND SIPPING

beverages, and we have a recipe for tooth decay. How to offset this? If you must snack, rinse your mouth with water after. Drink only plain water in between meals to neutralize the oral environment and support the teeth.

YOUR SIX-MONTH CLEANING MAY NOT BE ENOUGH

Most patients assume their teeth only need a professional cleaning every six months. For those prone to gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), this one-size-fits-all approach is not recommended. Gum disease is an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth and can lead to tooth loss when untreated. Patients who develop gum disease need more frequent cleanings to keep the infection under control. If you have active gum disease, your dentist will likely recommend that your teeth be cleaned every 3 or 4 months to keep you healthy.

Today’s busy schedules have us eating more frequently, instead of the standard three meals. Frequent snacking exposes our teeth to sugars and acids so often that they cannot recover. Add in sipping on sugary and acidic

One of its signature events is the annual Giving in Style Fashion Show & Brunch, scheduled for March 21, 2026, at The Galaxy in Wadsworth. This elegant brunch and runway event spotlights the latest fashion trends and provides critical support information to attendees for our senior community —all in support of MCSAF’s mission.

Another major fundraiser is the Twin Sizzler, a Fourth-of-July tradition featuring a 5K/10K/bike race and fun run. All events start and finish at historic Medina Square, providing racing and riding challenges for all ages and benefiting county seniors.

By attending, sponsoring, or volunteering at these events, community members help MCSAF continue offering services that foster independence, dignity, and well-being for local seniors.

Why Moving to Memory Care Proactively Makes All the Difference

When it comes to memory care, timing matters more than most people realize. Many families wait until a loved one is in crisis before considering a move, but taking a proactive approach can make the transition smoother, safer, and ultimately more beneficial.

First, memory care communities are specially designed to support cognitive health in a secure and structured environment. By moving in earlier, residents have the chance to settle in, get familiar with their surroundings, and build meaningful relationships with staff and fellow residents. This can reduce confusion and anxiety, leading to better emotional and physical well-being.

Proactive placement also opens the door to personalized care that evolves with a resident’s needs. Trained caregivers can recognize changes early and adapt support plans to better assist the resident. Residents benefit

from consistent routines, stimulating activities, and a lifestyle that encourages engagement and purpose; these are some of the key components to maintaining quality of life.

Families also feel the difference. Rather than scrambling during a health emergency, they can focus on being present, sharing laughs, telling stories, and simply being family. It’s peace of mind knowing that their loved one is in a safe, compassionate place where care isn’t rushed, but thoughtfully delivered.

The truth is, waiting doesn’t make things easier; it often makes them harder. Moving to memory care proactively isn’t just about planning ahead. It’s about preserving dignity, improving daily life, and making sure your loved one receives the support they deserve.

IMedina County Park District

n 2025, Medina County Park District proudly celebrates 60 years of enhancing the quality of all life through education, conservation, and the protection of natural resources. Established on April 19, 1965, the park district has become a beloved community resource, offering residents and visitors access to more than 23 park sites, over 50 trails, and a variety of educational programs that inspire people of all ages to connect with nature. Over the decades, the park district has emerged as a leader in conservation, successfully acquiring and managing 9,000 acres of protected land.

“We are incredibly proud to reach this milestone and are deeply grateful to the residents of Medina County who have supported our mission over the years,” said Medina County Park District Director Nathan Eppink.

“This anniversary is not just a celebration of the past 60 years but a commitment to preserving our natural spaces for generations to come.”

CHIPPEWA LAKE PARK:

As the largest inland natural lake in the State of Ohio, Chippewa Lake is the sparkling blue jewel of Medina County. This 330-acre body of water was formed by natural processes as glaciers receded from the landscape some 14,000 years ago.

It’s easy to see why visitors have been drawn to its shores since the first settlers arrived in the area. The pull of its glassy waters remains strong for anglers, for boaters, and especially for those who need a retreat from the daily grind to be refreshed by the lake breeze and picture-postcard views.

Many who have never heard of Medina County have heard of Chippewa Lake. From 1878 to 1978, it was the site of an amusement park – with rides, a hotel, and a ballroom. Some of the great entertainers of the twentieth century performed there, including bandleaders Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Lawrence Welk. Industrial powerhouses like Firestone, Ohio Edison, Timken, and Rubbermaid held company picnics at Chippewa Lake. Famous visitors included Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.

Medina County Park District plans to transform Chippewa Lake and the 93-acre former amusement park property into a regional destination that will, once again, bring people together and create memories.

“We are thrilled that this special place, which is such an important part of the cultural history of Northeast Ohio and treasured in the memories of so many people, will be open for the public to enjoy once again,” Nathan D. Eppink said. “The park district will preserve the remnants of the Ferris wheel and other historical relics that remain on the property, which provide an opportunity for interpretive panels and programs that celebrate the site’s iconic past.”

The master plan includes several phases of improvements that will take place over the next ten years. Amenities include hiking trails, an amphitheater, observation platforms, ADA kayak launch, picnic pavilion, reservable facility for events, and much more.

In addition to its cultural significance, Chippewa Lake and its wetlands are key components of a vast watershed that impacts the quality of life for many adjacent communities. The park district has conducted several H2Ohio-funded stream and wetland restoration projects that help reduce flooding, sedimentation, and pollution from storm water runoff – protecting residential property and enhancing the health of the lake for recreation and wildlife.

Bringing People Together

In 1976, Millard and Linda Fuller gave birth to a vision that believed everyone deserved a decent place to live. Over the last 48 years, Habitat for Humanity has improved the shelter of over 22 million people. Habitat for Humanity of Medina County joined with this vision back in 1991 and over the last 34 years has built 54 homes across our county. This was accomplished because of our committed volunteers, both on our build site and ReStore, along with generous financial supporters of Habitat. As we move forward, our mission remains the same. To provide decent, safe, and affordable shelter to qualified households in Medina County. We strive to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Stop by our ReStore or visit our website at www.medinacountyhabitat.org to learn more about how you can partner with us on this mission.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Majestic Equine Connections, Inc.

is a nonprofit organization serving Medina County through Therapeutic Horseback Riding, also known as Adaptive Horseback Riding. We offer lessons for individuals as young as four, including youth and seniors.

Our Executive Director, Jennifer Stankiewicz, brings a lifetime of experience working with individuals with disabilities. Her passion drives our mission to provide safe, engaging equine activities in a welcoming, family-friendly environment.

In the summer, we partner with The Ohio State University 4-H Extension as the 4-H Majestic Horse SPIN Club. We also offer Barn Buddies, a hands-on, non-riding program for all ages. This program, in partnership with The Caring Corral, is offered at just $10 per session and is partially funded by their generous support. Sign-ups are available at majesticequineconnectionsinc.org.

We’ve recently experienced exciting growth. In 2024, we were awarded over $11,000 by 100+ Women Who Care in Medina County and partnered with The Visiting Place Foundation. We also raised $20,500 through A Fun Time for a Cause hosted by Jennie Thewlis.

As we expand our services, we remain committed to small-group programming focused on individual care. But we can’t do it alone.

We’re seeking participant scholarships, horse sponsorships, and financial or in-kind donations—including hay and supplies. All donations are tax-deductible and help us continue to grow and serve.

We’re also working with the Medina County Park District to secure a larger facility to better accommodate our growing community. We look forward to sharing more updates soon—and we’re grateful for your support on this journey. Contact Jennifer Stankiewicz at majesticequineconnections@gmail.com for more information, or visit us online at majesticequineconnectionsinc.org or facebook.com/medinanonprofit.

SAYING "I DO"

Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes. Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of marriage vows by a couple, presentation of a gift (offering, rings, symbolic item, flowers, money, dress), and a public proclamation of marriage by an authority figure or celebrant, followed by a wedding reception. Below is a list of wonderful locations throughout Medina County to host your wedding and reception.
