Welcome to Avon!

Welcome to another exciting year in Avon, Ohio! As always, we are proud to be a community that combines the best of small-town charm with modern amenities and a bright future. One of the primary reasons families choose Avon as their home is our outstanding school system. We have many dedicated educators and staff who provide a top-notch learning environment for our children.

I’m proud to say that our Fire and Police departments are among the best, and we are fortunate to have these brave men and women working to keep us safe. Let’s continue to support them in every way we can, as they are truly the backbone of our community’s security.

I encourage you to take some time to visit our many beautiful parks, which are maintained thanks to the hard work of our city employees. Their commitment to this upkeep reflects the pride we all have in our city.

While we have made tremendous

progress, we understand there is always more to be done. This spring, we are excited to begin a major road improvement project at the intersection of Route 83 and Detroit Road. This will help ease traffic flow through our town and enhance the driving experience for all who pass through.

Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers, organizations, and residents who contribute their time and energy to help drive Avon forward. Your dedication is what makes this city truly special, and on behalf of the City of Avon, I thank you for your ongoing support.

Avon... Something for Everybody

From the city’s well-maintained parks to its safe neighborhoods and thriving businesses, Avon offers a high quality of life for all of its residents, said Mayor Bryan Jensen. Avon is a rapidly growing community that has retained a small-town feel, he said. “There’s a little bit of everything here—something for everybody,” he said. “We have virtually everything you need right here in town, so you never have to leave if you don’t want to. But if you want to go to the big city, Downtown Cleveland is conveniently just 20 miles away.”

GROWING PARKLAND

Avon’s growing park areas offer residents a quiet, natural respite from the activity in the town’s thriving retail regions. “If you go into any of our parks you have the ability to get away from the hustle and bustle of traffic and enjoy nature and the walking areas,” he said. “We’re continually adding to our parks. There’s a new piece of property on the south side of Avon, off Stony Ridge Road that we’re going to add this year. It’s a wooded area that will be another place for families to walk and to enjoy nature. Our goal is always to continue to add to areas of the city and keep them in their natural state. We’re growing fast in terms of people who want to live here, but we’re also trying to preserve areas where we will not have [commercial] development.”

One upcoming park project is the building of a pavilion

and permanent restrooms at Eagle Point Park. “We’re trying to improve the experience over there so people can go fish at Eagle Point and also have a clean restroom to use,” Jensen said. “There also will be a picnic area in that location.”

Last year, the city acquired two parcels of property to be preserved for parks, including one that the city plans to build into an arboretum, Jensen said. The 30-acres of land along French Creek is flat and walkable. “It’s a peaceful, quiet area with a lot of wildlife,” Jensen said.

Meanwhile, the Miller Nature Preserve, operated by the Lorain County Metropolitan Park District, features a variety of activities, including a 5,000-square-foot conservatory, a butterfly house and hiking trails. The conservatory displays plant specimens from all over the world.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

Like its park area, business in Avon continues to grow, the mayor noted. Upcoming new projects include a TopGolf location and a new Dick’s Sporting Goods, both on Chester Road, while a new Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant recently opened on Chester Road. “Retail continues to thrive in Avon and there is more to come,” Jensen said.

Meanwhile, Piston Automotive, which designs, engineers, assembles, and manufactures automotive parts,

is building an over 200,000 square foot facility on Avon Commerce Parkway.

The Cleveland Clinic, the city’s largest employer, is another important asset, providing medical services as well as jobs in the city, Jensen said. “A strong, diversified business base is important to generate revenue to keep the city operating,” he said. “When the economy slows down a little bit, we don’t see the effects of some of the downturn as much as some other cities because we’re so diversified. If one sector slows down a little bit, another sector balances that out and vice versa as the economy goes up and down. It helps to spread the tax burden in terms of operating a city the size of Avon.”

Along with the Clinic, the city’s largest employers include Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC., which moved its headquarters to Avon in 2021, and Costco Wholesale Corp. Jensen said health care is prominent in Avon. “Residents of Avon and surrounding communities have convenient access to leading health care providers, including the [Cleveland] Clinic, a Mercy Health Primary and Specialty Care office as well as several University Hospitals affiliated practices, such as UH Avon Health Center, which houses the UH Seidman Cancer Center, and UH Avon Rehabilitation Hospital,” he said. “Our healthcare facilities are a big factor for people moving here.”

ROAD IMPROVEMENT

Avon’s abundant shopping and other amenities are among the benefits that make the town an ideal home for residents. “To make it easier to move around the city, we’re embarking on some improvements to Route 83 and Detroit Road,” Jensen said. “That’s a major $11 million project that’s going to help with some traffic issues. We’re going to make more dedicated right turn lanes, which will help correct some of those pinch points at that intersection. It won’t correct everything of course, but it’ll definitely help move people through town a little easier, and get them to places quicker.” The two-year project will be funded in part with money from the state and federal governments. “It’s something that’s been in the works for probably seven years now and is finally going to get underway,” Jensen said.

SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY

The community’s most important asset, Jensen said, is its residents. “I find it heartening to witness the kindness, generosity and spirit of community that defines Avon,” he said. “When severe storms hit in August [2024], I saw neighbors helping neighbors, working together to clean up and repair damage. I was especially moved by the efforts of Avon residents who organized a truck convoy to bring supplies—food, clothing and building materials—to those in need, as well as taking hay for the starving livestock to farmers in hurricane-stricken North Carolina.”

PASSING THE GIVING TORCH

If you haven’t yet included your children or grandchildren in your charitable giving, now is a great time to start! Teaching young family members about philanthropy can help instill values of generosity and responsibility while fostering a deeper connection to the community. Many parents and grandparents believe that involving children in charitable giving strengthens their sense of purpose and encourages them to contribute to a more compassionate world.

At the Community Foundation of Lorain County, we’re here to guide you in inspiring your family’s next generation of givers. Engaging children in philanthropy often leads to broader estate planning discussions, such as:

▸ How to structure charitable legacies to keep heirs involved in your priorities

▸ Ensuring financial security for children while maintaining their drive for success

▸ Encouraging self-directed charitable passions among younger generations

Our team collaborates with your tax and estate advisors to help address these concerns. Strategies may include setting up a donoradvised fund, structuring an estate plan to benefit both heirs and charities, or creating opportunities for kids to stay involved in giving.

If you’d like to explore ways to leave a lasting impact while fostering financial independence in your family, contact Community Foundation of Lorain County’s Development Officer, Colleen Walts, at cwalts@peoplewhocare.org or call (440) 984-7390.

Founded in 1980, the Community Foundation of Lorain County has been a trusted partner for 45 years, managing over 700 endowment funds with assets totaling $170M These investments generate impactful support annually, funding scholarships and grants that benefit individuals and non-profits throughout Lorain County

Life is Fragile

Living life on your own terms is about embracing the things you want to do now, rather than waiting for health issues or pain to force you into action. Too often, people delay their dreams and desires, thinking there’s always time later. However, time is unpredictable, and putting off experiences can lead to regret. Choosing to pursue what you love today, whether it’s traveling, learning new skills, or spending more time with loved ones, allows you to live fully and with purpose. On the other hand, waiting until health problems or personal challenges push you into a corner can leave you with fewer options and opportunities. Taking action now empowers you to create memories and live without the weight of “what-ifs.” Life is fragile, and the best time to live authentically is now—before circumstances compel you to make changes.

Whether you’re looking for general chiropractic care, relief from pain, improving function, or seeking peak athletic performance, Urban Chiropractic Spine and Sports Clinic can help you achieve your wellness goals. Visit www.spineandsportsclinic.com for more information.

FQuality of Life

IDO’s Companion, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)3 dog rescue organization comprised of volunteers who perform vital functions in rescuing animals. Operating out of Lorain County, they rescue dogs from the streets, the county dog pound, and ill or injured dogs coming into their vet clinic from Cuyahoga County. They also rescue dogs from other rural kill shelters around Ohio and surrounding states.

In addition to the dogs they rescue, FIDOs assists other independent local rescues and vet clinics by funding the spay/neuter and rehoming of homeless cats and dogs. They also provide financial assistance for spay/neuter programs for low-income pet owners.

FIDO’s Companion strives to find new adoptive families willing to become lifetime companions for each dog rescued. They have a special interest in senior dogs and have a longterm palliative care foster-based program to ensure these dogs live out their senior years in comfort.

Their focus is on the quality of life they provide to one canine companion at a time. FIDOs believes that the value of their work is not in the quantity of animals they save, but in the quality of the new life they provide.

For information on how you can volunteer, donate, or connect, visit fidoscompanion.com, or find them on social media.

PUBLISHES BOOK SERIES

While attending Avon High School, Mya Viets prided herself on being an artist, constantly drawing little figures. After graduation, she created the characters MeloRaka and Friends, a poodle and her pals, and used them to illustrate a book. The hand-drawn, self-published book was developed to help toddlers and children face life’s challenges and adventures and gives the viewpoint of what it’s like to be autistic and the learning milestones that Viets has personally struggled with. She published a second, hand-drawn book before publishing three more using Adobe Illustrator software, including her latest MeloRaka Gets a Baby Brother. All the books are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IngramSpark.

Viets wanted to take her books to the next level and turn them into animated episodes, but she did not know how to create animation. Because of her autism, she could not sit through a traditional class and needed someone who understood her condition and could relate on a level that would help her learn and flourish as a potential animator.

Viets found a mentor in Dani Bowman, one of the autistic celebrities on the Netflix series Love on the Spectrum. Bowman owns Danimation, a company that specializes in teaching autistic young adults how to animate. Viets is currently working with Bowman directly on creating an animated short story of MeloRaka and Her Autistic Friend, Blobblot, which will premiere at the 2025 Comic-Con International Convention in San Diego this July and on the YouTube channel MeloRakaandFriends. Viets’ goal is to have an animated series of her work. To learn more about this talented artist, visit melorakaandfriends.com or Facebook and Instagram @melorakaandfriends.
