he amount of growth in Medina County has hit an all-time high, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau is welcoming visitors from all over the nation! It seems each city, village, and town is busy planning events that will take place next year to celebrate the United States' semiquincentennial. F

rom its official organization in 1818 to becoming the tenth fastest growing county in Ohio, Medina County has strived for over 200 years to provide residents with abundant opportunities to live, work, and play. Medina County is fortunate to have people who treasure the history and who are proud of the communities in which they live. With a population of around 182,470 as of the last census, Medina County offers three cities, six villages, and 17 townships to call home. From historic downtowns to familyoriented suburbs to rural countryside, there is something in the county for everyone!

Do you love history? There are 29 properties and districts located on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the local historical societies have activities to participate in throughout the year. The Medina County Historical Society held a capital drive to purchase and preserve the iconic

McDowell-Phillips house located at 205 S. Prospect St. in Medina. This beautiful Queen Anne Shingle-Style home was built in 1890 by R.M. McDowell. Located in the Bankers Row historic district, the house features seven fireplaces, 14 rooms, and is considered the largest house in Medina. It is a historic landmark and serves as an additional museum to house the society’s collections, as well as many significant items left by the five generations who lived there. The society also owns the John Smart House Museum located at 206 N. Elmwood Ave. in Medina. Both house-museums are open for tours at various times throughout the year.

Did you know all Medina County Veterans who possess a Veteran Identification Card are eligible to ride Medina County’s Public Transportation for free? Veteran ID cards are issued by the Medina County Recorder's Office located in the County Administration Building on the first floor.

The 273-acre Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery was opened by the Federal Government in June 2000. The cemetery is one of only 136 such cemeteries throughout the United States.

There are seven public school districts within the county and numerous private school options. The Medina County Career Center (MCCC) offers courses for high school students who want to focus on advanced career technical training and academic excellence for lifelong success.

Courses are also offered to adults who want to start a new job or advance in their existing career.

We boast the Cuyahoga Community College – Brunswick University Campus and an Achievement Center, which educates those with developmental disabilities. Medina County has moved forward with the purchase of the Medina Continued on page 10

COUNTY OVERVIEW Continued from page 8 County University Center (MCUC) from the University of Akron for $2.85 million. The property, located at 6300 Technology Ln., will support the expanding needs of the MCCC, including adult education, a new nursing and paramedic program, and workforce training.

The project also benefits the Medina County Sheriff’s Office, which will gain training space. Local leaders, including Commissioners Swedyk, Hambley, and Harrison, along with State Representative Sharon Ray and MCCC Superintendent Steven Chrisman, praised the collaboration for its long-term community impact. The initiative marks a major step in enhancing education and job training in Medina County.

Medina County Park District (MCPD) connects people with nature through education and conservation, managing more than 9,000 acres that include 23 parks and preserves, over 50 trails, two nature centers, and Ohio’s largest natural inland lake — Chippewa Lake. This year, MCPD celebrates 60 years of enhancing quality of all life through education, conservation, and the protection of natural resources. To honor this milestone, the park district has planned a series of celebratory events throughout the year, and a number of new park areas and amenities will be opening to the public.

Six libraries are conveniently located throughout the

county to escape with a good book or partake in one of the numerous programs offered. A Bookmobile makes stops throughout the county, bringing books, movies, and programs to the communities.

Traveling around Medina County is easy through Medina County Public Transit (MCPT), which works to provide safe, reliable, quality public transportation services to all of Medina County. The MC Flex began as a pilot program in Wadsworth to test the viability of the service. MC Flex is a microtransit service, a relatively new public transit option that operates similarly to ride-hailing applications like Uber and Lyft. Rather than waiting for a bus operating on a set route, the on-demand service allows riders to instead book

COUNTY OVERVIEW a trip that will pick them up and drop them off at their preferred destination anywhere within the designated zone.

Riders can book a trip in one of three ways — by using the Rides on Demand mobile application from their smartphone, using the web-based application on their computer, or by calling the MCPT office and speaking with a dispatcher.

Benefits of the MC Flex service include increased ridership, improved service capacity, reduced vehicle miles, less passenger travel time, and lower vehicle fuel usage. The service operates in Wadsworth, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Medina City, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Brunswick, Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Trips can be scheduled by calling 330-723-9670 up to seven days in advance. A minimum of two hours in advance is required. Trips are booked based on availability. MC Flex fares are one-way, $1.50; qualifying reduced, $.75; or all-day pass, $4. A monthly MC Flex Pass can also be purchased for $46. Additionally, tickets can be purchased through the EZfare App to further increase the ease of payment while riding transit. Buses are equipped with EZfare Validators, allowing passengers to scan the barcode when boarding.

Continued from page 11 The newly constructed Medina County Courthouse opened in December 2022. The new courthouse consists of four floors and provides approximately 86,300 square feet of new space and approximately 21,000 square feet of renovated space. Constructed behind the current courthouses, the new courthouse includes the County Clerk, sally port, secure holding areas, Common Pleas Court, Juvenile and Probate courts, Juvenile Probation, and County Adult Probation.

Renovations to the 1841 Courthouse, located on Medina’s Historic Public Square, were completed in 2023, creating a safer, more efficient courthouse with ample space to serve the citizens of Medina County for many years to come.

he team at Medina County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) focuses on attracting, retaining, and expanding businesses. The business base of Medina County is not concentrated in any one industry, and the local economy has proven that diversification of industry is the key to stability, regardless of economic climate. We are always looking to attract new businesses to Medina County, especially small, closely held, or family-owned businesses.

Through our business outreach program, we meet with over 200 companies annually to learn from their successes, anticipate their needs, and help them achieve their goals. MCEDC helps retain businesses by providing them access to financing resources, connecting them to workforce and educational partners and their programs, and negotiating local and state incentives. Medina County’s business community continues to see tremendous growth, particularly by innovative companies that have found new market niches and opened new product lines during the past year. Through a variety of partnerships, MCEDC supports businesses’ growth, allocating resources to those who need help expanding their businesses.

To combat workforce shortages and to build the county labor pool, MCEDC has created and strengthened programs aimed at keeping our high school graduates in Medina County to start their careers. Since 2022, our career coach has helped over 5,000 students explore career interests, connect to prospective employers, and find career opportunities. To support new graduates in their career paths, we developed a program awarding scholarships to students who have gained employment immediately following high school graduation to aid them in acquiring the necessary tools to start their careers. This year, we

awarded $1,000 scholarships to twenty students, adding to the 39 scholarships in the prior three years.

Workforce Development IN MEDINA COUNTY

orkforce availability continues to be the number one issue for businesses in Medina County, but Medina County Economic Development Corporation is taking proactive steps to close the employment gap. MCDC works hard to bring new people into the county, keep the people we have, and get the businesses the workers they need.

Did you know that over 50% of the labor force in Medina County leaves the county for work each day? And according to the US Census Bureau, they have an average commute time of nearly 28 minutes. s Medina County Treasurer, John Burke manages and invests over $700 million annually. Using successful investment strategies, he has earned $60 million from interest earnings during his tenure — enough to run the county for over a year. He has been named Ohio Treasurer of the Year out of 3500 financial managers.

Over the years, Treasurer Burke has launched several new initiatives including a Prepay Tax program; Unclaimed Funds; and online/mobile tax payment programs. His Fix-It Funds program has helped over 1000 residents improve their homes with low fixed interest rate loans.

For such innovative programs, he was awarded the National Best Practices Award from the International Association of Government Officials – iGO (IACREOT).

Born in Medina, John has served his community as a Boy Scout leader, church organist, Red Cross chairman, and Medina City councilman-at-large.

John holds an MBA from Miami University (Ohio). He and his wife Lisa reside in Medina Township and have John A. Burke, Medina County Treasurer one son, Matt.

ince 2008, Bethany Dentler has been the Executive Director of the Medina County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC), growing the organization from three employees to eight. With her duties extending to the administration of the Medina County Port Authority, Bethany has also overseen the development of the 180-mile Medina County Fiber Network, which is now bringing residential fiber throughout the county.

In 2022, Bethany was honored as an economic development leader by the National Rural Economic Development Association. She also received the Regional Economic Development Leader award from Team NEO in 2018.

ormerly known as the ADAMH Board, the Medina County Mental Health & Recovery Board’s (MHRB) mission is to decrease stigma and provide hope for a better life by assuring the availability of high-quality services in the areas of mental health, substance use, and recovery support to all Medina County residents through planning, purchasing cost effective services to the extent resources are available, coordinating, and evaluating these services.

The MHRB has invested in a wide and diverse array of services and programming through our contracted provider agencies. Alternative Paths and OhioGuidestone are the largest community-based behavioral health agencies funded by the MHRB, and their mix of services offers a wide choice of mental health, substance use, and recovery support services.

Catholic Charities provides senior case management services to individuals aged 60 and over, as well as mental health and substance use counseling for all ages. Hope Recovery Community (HRC) (including Cathy’s House) provides a continuum of peer and recovery support services as well as certified recovery houses that provide Level 1 and Level 2 men’s recovery housing beds. Additionally, the MHRB owns and funds the Discovery Recovery House, a certified Level 3 recovery house for women. The MHRB also owns and funds the Youth Resiliency & Counseling Center,

HEALTH & WELLNESS a state-of-the-art trauma-informed counseling center with a variety of creative rooms: a sand room, art room, playroom, a calming room, full kitchen, playground, and more. e can all name the basics of dental health: brush, avoid sugary foods, and visit the dentist. But when it comes to achieving optimal oral health, details matter.

When we eat and care for our teeth can mean the difference between health and disease.

WHEN TO BRUSH?

Brushing and flossing your teeth before bedtime is the most critical step in dental health.

The food we eat forms a bacterial plaque that sits on our teeth, causing tooth decay and gum disease. Leaving plaque on your teeth overnight gives those bacteria a long, uninterrupted opportunity to do harm. For ideal prevention, dentists recommend you brush every morning and floss and brush your teeth every night before bed.

SNACKING AND SIPPING

Today’s busy schedules have us eating more frequently, instead of the standard three meals. Frequent snacking exposes our teeth to sugars and acids so often that they cannot recover. Add in sipping on sugary and acidic

beverages, and we have a recipe for tooth decay.

How to offset this? If you must snack, rinse your mouth with water after. Drink only plain water in between meals to neutralize the oral environment and support the teeth.

YOUR SIX-MONTH CLEANING MAY NOT BE ENOUGH

Most patients assume their teeth only need a professional cleaning every six months. For those prone to gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), this one-size-fits-all approach is not recommended. Gum disease is an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth and can lead to tooth loss when untreated. Patients who develop gum disease need more frequent cleanings to keep the infection under control. If you have active gum disease, your dentist will likely recommend that your teeth be cleaned every 3 or 4 months to keep you healthy.

CHIPPEWA LAKE PARK:

As the largest inland natural lake in the State of Ohio, Chippewa Lake is the sparkling blue jewel of Medina County.

This 330-acre body of water was formed by natural processes as glaciers receded from the landscape some 14,000 years ago.

It’s easy to see why visitors have been drawn to its shores since the first settlers arrived in the area. The pull of its glassy waters remains strong for anglers, for boaters, and especially for those who need a retreat from the daily grind to be refreshed by the lake breeze and picture-postcard views.

Many who have never heard of Medina County have heard of Chippewa Lake. From 1878 to 1978, it was the site of an amusement park – with rides, a hotel, and a ballroom. Some of the great entertainers of the twentieth century performed there, including bandleaders Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Lawrence Welk. Industrial powerhouses like Firestone, Ohio Edison, Timken, and Rubbermaid held company picnics at Chippewa Lake.

Famous visitors included Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.

Medina County Park District plans to transform Chippewa Lake and the 93-acre former amusement park property into a regional destination that will, once again, bring people together and create memories.

“We are thrilled that this special place, which is such an important part of the cultural history of Northeast Ohio and treasured in the memories of so many people, will be open for the public to enjoy once again,” Nathan D. Eppink said.

“The park district will preserve the remnants of the Ferris wheel and other historical relics that remain on the property, which provide an opportunity for interpretive panels and programs that celebrate the site’s iconic past.”

The master plan includes several phases of improvements that will take place over the next ten years. Amenities include hiking trails, an amphitheater, observation platforms, ADA kayak launch, picnic pavilion, reservable facility for events, and much more.

In addition to its cultural significance, Chippewa Lake and its wetlands are key components of a vast watershed that impacts the quality of life for many adjacent communities.

The park district has conducted several H2Ohio-funded stream and wetland restoration projects that help reduce flooding, sedimentation, and pollution from storm water runoff – protecting residential property and enhancing the health of the lake for recreation and wildlife.

Over the last 48 years, Habitat for Humanity has improved the shelter of over 22 million people. Habitat for Humanity of Medina County joined with this vision back in 1991 and over the last 34 years has built 54 homes across our county. This was accomplished because of our committed volunteers, both on our build site and ReStore, along with generous financial supporters of Habitat. As we move forward, our mission remains the same. To provide decent, safe, and affordable shelter to qualified households in Medina County.

Main Street Medina (MSM) is a non-profit,

community development corporation whose mission is to lead the effort for historic preservation, economic sustainability, and continued evolution of Medina’s Historic and South Town Districts as the heart of the community.

MSM produces yearly events that are free to the public, including Kids Day & Teen Fest in June, South Town Arts & Music Festival in August, Medina Fall Festival in September, and the ever-popular Medina Candlelight Walk in November, as well as monthly promotional events.

The Medina Square Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Historic Public Square for 21 weeks beginning in May. The farmers market features 80+ vendors with the best in locally grown greens, fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, heirloom produce, meats, cheeses, homemade jams and jellies, nut butters, local honey, fresh bread and baked goods (GF & V), pet stuff, and much more.

Our market accepts SNAP customers and provides matching Produce Perks up to $25 per customer every week. Ohio WIC and Ohio Farmers Market Senior Coupons are honored. We also receive a TANF grant to distribute additional produce coupons to eligible households.

Main Street Medina is volunteer-based with more than 200 members ranging from families to small businesses.

Our volunteers clocked over 3,000 volunteer hours last year. We maintain a board of directors and four committees, including Design, Promotions, Organization, and Economic Vitality. These committees work on events and promotions, memberships and fundraising (like Medina Beer Fest), business support and recruitment, and streetscape improvements and development.

As a non-profit, Main Street Medina relies on generous donations from the community, sponsorships from local businesses, proceeds from fundraising events, and grants, among other income sources. We are proud to partner with the City of Medina, Medina County, the

Medina County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, and nonprofit agencies.

Majestic Equine Connections, Inc.

is a nonprofit organization serving Medina County through Therapeutic Horseback Riding, also known as Adaptive Horseback Riding. We offer lessons for individuals as young as four, including youth and seniors.

Our Executive Director, Jennifer Stankiewicz, brings a lifetime of experience working with individuals with disabilities. Her passion drives our mission to provide safe, engaging equine activities in a welcoming, family-friendly environment.

In the summer, we partner with The Ohio State University 4-H Extension as the 4-H Majestic Horse SPIN Club. We also offer Barn Buddies, a hands-on, non-riding program for all ages. This program, in partnership with The Caring Corral, is offered at just $10 per session and is partially funded by their generous support. Sign-ups are available at majesticequineconnectionsinc.org.

We’ve recently experienced exciting growth. In 2024, we were awarded over $11,000 by 100+ Women Who Care in Medina County and partnered with The Visiting Place Foundation. We also raised $20,500 through A Fun Time for a Cause hosted by Jennie Thewlis.

As we expand our services, we remain committed to small-group programming focused on individual care. But we can’t do it alone.

We’re seeking participant scholarships, horse sponsorships, and financial or in-kind donations—including hay and supplies. All donations are tax-deductible and help us continue to grow and serve.

We’re also working with the Medina County Park District to secure a larger facility to better accommodate our growing community.
