elcome to this special bumper Commemorative “Award Winning Edition” of our club newsletter. Some readers may wonder why we have produced this special edition. Well the reason is two fold. Last year we won the

Metropolitan Bowling Club of the Year

and this year at the Club’s WA presentation night held at the Crown Casino before 450 guests on 14th April 2013, Sorrento was awarded the coveted and prestigious

Metropolitan Club of the Year in the Small/Medium Category

To be selected for this latest award is a wonderful additional achievement for our Club.

Sorrento scored the highest marks across all categories in the eleven criteria used in the judging.

In particular the judges noted the effort that we continue to place on our strategic and long term planning. Our “2020 Long Term Plan” was considered to constitute the driving force behind our club’s development.

Other criteria used were Sorrento’s participation and success in competitions, our weekly and monthly events for members, the training and development of members, our membership/recruitment program, our participation in healthy and environmental friendly initiatives/activities and our staff training programs.

President’s Report

(As tabled at the AGM held on Sunday 9th June 2013)

I

t is with considerable pride and a strong sense of satisfaction that I present to you my final President’s report. My Report focuses on the two year term of the current management group. When I say “management group” I am not only referring to the Executive Committee but also to our committees that are in charge of Ladies and Men’s Bowls, Greens and Grounds, Bar, Social, Croquet, Darts and their sub-committees such as Match, Selection and Coaching. I am also referring to the more than 100 Club volunteers and officials who freely and unselfishly give of their time and energies.

We faced a number of challenges back in 2011 including poor greens, falling membership and revenue, and growing levels of dissatisfaction within the Club. I am therefore very pleased to report to you today that, as will be amplified by the Treasurer, the Club is arguably in the strongest financial position of its history, even after making a considerable investment in infrastructure.

Our membership stands at over 600, rivalling the Club’s peak reached back in 2008, and we have the largest number of capitated bowlers of any club in the State.

The Club’s bowls performance in 2011/12 was outstanding with nine teams in the finals, resulting in seven promotions. Sustaining this effort in 2012/13 was never going to be easy, but we all but held our own with two further promotions but unfortunately also three demotions. Both Croquet and Darts won premierships.

Our greens have been returned to their reputation of being among the best around.

Investment in infrastructure has been significant over the past two years. This includes the construction of a $40,000 outdoor area and the acquisition of outdoor tables and chairs; the soon to be completed $110,000 renovation of the toilets together with locker refurbishment and replacement; replacement of our aging point of sale (till) system and the introduction of “smart” membership cards; implementation of an integrated membership management system and a resource booking system; the erection of sun sails; the installation of sliding doors in the sports area (thanks to the Dart Club); implementation of a stateof-the-art CCTV surveillance system (thanks to the generosity of Wayne Gray); new retainOur new Smart Card ing walls, storage sheds and the beautification will look like this of our gardens and surrounds; full restoration of A Green and quite a deal more.

We are currently in negotiations with the City of Joondalup to extend the western end of the clubhouse by five metres to allow the Club to house a new administration and match office as well as a meeting area. This will allow the kitchen to be extended into the area currently used for administration and to increase our sports bar area by adding to it the space currently occupied by the match office. We estimate that the cost of the new extension will be in the vicinity of $150,000, with the kitchen costing a further $100,000. We have also applied for a government grant to erect flood lighting for C, D and E greens.

I wish to acknowledge the strong support and relationship provided by the City of Joondalup and its mayor Troy Pickard and our local member Tony Krsticevic.

As the Treasurer will also point out, our bar trade is very strong and the number of people playing bowls and other sports is growing. The Club is very vibrant and energised with regular entertainment events and functions in support of our members.

On the policy side, with the help of a small team of members, we have reviewed the Club’s Constitution and rewritten our by-laws. Over the next six to twelve months I understand that the new Executive committee will trial a new organisation structure that will create a Board of Governance to focus on planning, policy development and financial management. If this trial proves successful, a notice of motion will be put to members to change the Constitution.

Administrative improvements have also been a priority over the past two years with the implementation of a new records system; a complete rewrite of the Club’s website; development of a volunteer’s management plan; implementation of a Safety and Occupational Health policy and a new Code of Conduct.

The Club’s strategic plan titled 2020 Vision – Planning for the Future of the Sorrento Bowling Club has proved to be a very important document in the Club’s development, primarily because of the thinking that went into its development and the robust and well considered strategies that have evolved.

I believe that we are a very happy Club and, with more than one in six members volunteering, we are a very committed Club.

Our efforts have been recognised by Bowls WA with the awarding of the “Metropolitan Bowling Club of the Year” in 2012 and by Clubs WA with the awarding of their “Metropolitan Club of the Year” in 2013.

The Clubs WA award is open to all clubs and not just bowling clubs. In awarding this coveted prize to Sorrento, Clubs WA said that the Club scored the highest marks across all eleven categories and in particular “the judges noted the effort that the Club contin

ued to place on their strategic review of operations which resulted in a vision for future planning of the Club through to 2020 and its enabling strategies that are regularly reviewed and constitute the driving force behind the Club’s development”. Sorrento was also a finalist in Clubs WA’s “Clubs in the Community” award.

In September this year Sorrento will host the National Juniors Competition featuring the best young bowlers throughout Australia.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the eleven members of the Executive for their outstanding contribution; the dedicated and professional service provided by the Club’s committees and sub-committees; to our many, many volunteers and officials; and to you the members of the Club for placing your confidence in us.

I believe that we have fulfilled our vision of being “the best bowling club in Western Australia”. Given the dynamic and challenging environment within which this Club operates, future challenges must be addressed if we are to stay at the forefront. The job is never done and treading water is never an option.

To the retiring members of the current management team; thank you. I am confident that Barry Bradshaw, our continuing members and the newly appointed members will do an excellent job at continuing the Club’s development and prosperity and I wish them every success. Thank you.

Vice President’s Report

W

hat a fantastic past two years for our club with Club of the Year awards in both 2012 and 2013. I would like to acknowledge the Committee for their terrific contribution in their portfolios, the large number of volunteers for their efforts and to all the staff covering grounds, bar etc. Also to the Croquet group for their achievements and to Joan and all her helpers in the kitchen. What a job well done!

I have enjoyed the last two and a half years at the Club in my position representing you members and I will do my utmost to continue to support our Club.

A Proposed New Structure for Our Club

A

t the Executive’s January 2013 meeting I was tasked with reviewing the Club’s Constitution and By Laws. As a consequence, I organised a Review Team comprising myself as chair with Kevin Cook, Tony Fowke, Richard Fermoyle and Neville Odell as team members.

With a membership of over 600 and a turnover of some $800 000 the Sorrento Bowling

Club is a Small to Medium Business enterprise. There are ever increasing and complex administrative and legal demands being placed on organisations such as our Club.

The current organisational structure has served the club well to date but may no longer support it into the future.

The following outlines the Review Team’s recommendations on how to address these challenges. The recommendations are grouped under three Items. Items 1 and 2 represent material changes whereas Item 3 is concerned with modernising and rationalising the Constitution and By Laws without changing current practices.

Item 1.

To meet the challenges facing the club and to allow it to continue to grow the Review Team believe that it is necessary to create a structure that allows a dedicated group to focus on “business” issues and another to focus on “field of play and related support activities”.

It is therefore proposed that the authority, responsibilities and duties of the current Executive Committee be split and two new bodies be created namely, a Board of Governance and a Committee of Management.

The Board will be responsible for “the management and administration of the affairs, property and funds of the club” and will focus on: • Corporate Governance (review, revision and development of the Constitution, By Laws and Policies etc.).

• Strategic Planning (20/20 Vision).

• Financial Planning/Management (Budget Forecasts, Budget Preparation and monitoring club finances. This will include incorporating the current role of the Finance Committee).

• Fund Raising (Grants and sponsorship strategies).

• Membership recruitment and retention strategies.

• Volunteer Coordination.

• Infrastructure Planning.

• Other higher level responsibilities.

The Committee of Management will be responsible for “field of play and related support activities”. This Committee will focus on day to day activities supporting the delivery of: • Sporting programmes (for pennants, club championships, social games, corporate bowls and Associated Sports such as Croquet and Darts).

• Greens maintenance/availability for sporting events.

• Bar and catering support for events and functions.

• Member services, etc.

Item 2.

In response to input from members, The Review Team propose, that where terms of office appear throughout the Constitution and By Laws they be reduced from “two (2) years” to “up to one (1) year”.

Item 3.

In order to modernise/rationalise the Constitution the following changes are proposed: • Delete all headings “Part A” etc.

• Change the Clause numbering system.

• Clause 7 “Definitions” move to start of document and number as Clause 1.1.

• New Clause “Interpretation” include as Clause 1.2.

• Clause 2 (Club Colours) delete and move to the By Laws as Clause 2.

• Clause 3 (Attire) delete and include in By Law Clause 6 Dress Code and Attire.

• New Clause “Powers” include as Clause 2.4.

• Clause 13 “Age Limit” delete. Include in Clause 3.5.9 “Junior Members”.

• Clauses 38 to 48 (Committees) delete and move in total to the By Laws (App. A).

• Clause 52 change to Clause 6.1 with the words “Timing of” deleted.

• Clause 61 change to 6.10 with reference to Auditors deleted. Details on Auditors now included in Clause 4.5 “Auditors”.

• Clause 4.5 “Auditors” expanded to include “The Board shall ensure the Club’s books and records are reviewed/audited on an annual basis”.

• Clause 70 “Delegation of Powers” delete now included in Clause 5.4 “Delegation to Committees”.

• Clauses 78 to 81 Duties of President, Secretary, Treasurer and Secretary Manager (inclusive) delete and move in total to the By Laws (Appendix B).

• Clause 87 “Interpretation of Constitution and By Laws” delete. Now include in Clause 1.2 “Interpretation”.

In order to implement these proposals and make the necessary changes to the Constitution it is necessary to obtain a 75% majority approval from those members attending an AGM, Half Yearly AGM or a Special General Meeting.

The proposed new structure and changes to the Constitution and By Laws were agreed to by the Executive with the proviso that the new structure be tested, refined and proven to deliver the desired result before presenting them to the Membership for consideration.

These and other initiatives under way at our Club promise interesting and exciting times ahead.

Life Membership – Brian Lucas

I

n 1985 when Brian first walked into the Sorrento Bowling Club to get a game of darts, his first contacts were Con Parker and Alan Partington, two stalwarts of the club. It was not long before Brian was making a name for himself in many dart competitions. During his time at our Club, Brian has become a life member of the Sorrento Darts Club. He is an “A” grade player and has won many inner club championships as well as quite a few Pennants, representing Sorrento in the local darts competition.

Brian was soon a Committee man and President of the Darts Club.

When Brian decided it was time to become involved in lawn bowls and put on the baggy white pants, he immediately assisted as a volunteer in preparing and repairing the club greens to a high standard for bowling. It wasn’t long before Brian has become a 1st Division bowler and a Club Champion.

Brian was also responsible for approaching Colin Moore in the early 90’s to take on the role of club coach. This decision saw the club grow from strength to strength as a bowling club and a lot of members both past and present still attribute the clubs bowling prowess and progress to the arrival of Colin Moore.

Brian soon became a committee member of the Bowls Club, then Treasurer and finally President. His tenure as President has seen our club resurrect itself from being in the doldrums to one of high respectability in the bowling fraternity. His ability to think both strategically and clearly led to the drafting of a long term plan for the Club. This Plan called “2020 Vision: Planning for the Future of the Sorrento Bowling Club” helped our club to address weaknesses and identify a number of activities to improve the operation whilst increasing overall membership.

As a result of Brian’s and his committee’s efforts the Club won the 2012 Metropolitan Bowling Club of the Year award and the 2013 Metropolitan Club of the Year in the Small/Medium Category.

He has also introduced many new initiatives in the club office, one being a complete revamp of the clubs record system and a swipe card system which will be available to all club members shortly. He is currently working on the upgrade of our web-site.

Behind every good President there are many willing workers and volunteers and I am sure that Brian would be the first to admit that all his achievements over the past years would not have been made possible if not for the tireless work of the Committees and the many volunteers. His patience, approachability and willingness to listen to suggestions are special attributes.

Consideration for life membership is based on hard work and commitment to the Club 12

over many years. Brian’s involvement with all aspects of the Sorrento Bowling Club makes him a very worthy recipient of life membership. Life membership is a great honour and I am sure Brian is honoured to receive such recognition. Congratulations to Brian Lucas on joining the list of very worthy life members of the Sorrento Bowling Club.

Croquet Report

O

nce again A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the workers and volunteers who assist around the croquet area. A lot of work is being done in keeping the Croquet Area up to date to fit in with the Bowling Clubs new look.

We have had a few special birthday celebrations in the last few months, with Kathy Hamilton & Dorothy Stone having a joint celebration at the Kingsley Tavern and Jean Linders and Tony Fowke celebrating together at Spinnakers Restaurant at Hillary’s Marina.

Wandering Members News: York Summer Tournament was represented by four members from Sorrento. We did very well playing each off in the “Bad Egg” finals of the day (alias the bottom) and we still didn’t win. But we learnt heaps with many top players and coaches spending time with us on technique and tactics.

Saturday evening barbecues allowed us to socialise with other club members. A few wines were consumed by some of us, which resulted in lots of giggles, snoring and heavy heads. A couple of trivial domestic disputes between two bossy people (won’t mention any names here, I think you can guess who. But all good we’re friends we get over it).

Safeway Security Croquet Golf Challenge held on Sunday 7th April.

This is the second year that Safeway Security has sponsored this day and a good percentage of our members came along to support the event and other than it being a very warm day, it was great to see our members have such an enjoyable day finishing off with a pizza feast and a drink or two. Winners of the day were: 1st prize: Kerry Bomford, 2nd prize: Odette Moro and 3rd prize: Peter Hamilton.

Autumn Nights: Sorrento has three teams currently playing in the Autumn Nights tournaments being held between Forest Park Club in Mt. Lawley and the Vic Park club on Tuesday nights.

A couple of us got a bit of a shock not realising that it has to be near cyclone, typhoon, hurricane weather before anything is cancelled. Croquet is an all year round sport.

Needless to say the unprepared players got drenched.

Competition Virgin by Odette Moro: Yes, I was a competition virgin until three weeks ago. Midway through the Autumn Nights comp and I’m loving being on top (or rather close to it). Have I gained your attention with this bit of sexual innuendo? I’ve been with the club for roughly 18 months and saying yes to participating in my first competition was a big step for me. I didn’t think I was good enough and certainly not up to Terry Harvey’s (my partner’s) high standard. But I’m holding my own and very proud of it – so far only losing one game in the nine I’ve played. Terry, I hope you’re happy with me!

I’ve met some very lovely people at the various club venues and to all our other members who are a bit nervous to play in inter-club competitions – go for it, I guarantee you’ll enjoy it. So what if you miss a hoop or roquet – guess what, the other teams miss too!

Fun Day Sorrento invited Mandurah Croquet for a fun day on Sunday 26th May. Players from Mandurah were collected from Warwick Train Station and on arrival were treated to morning tea, followed by social croquet games. The day was finished off with afternoon tea and drinks prior to players being returned to the train station. Due to the success of the day, more of these events will be arranged in the future.

Greens and Grounds Report

A

nother successful year completed with the Club progressing in a very satisfactory manner. A lot of time and effort has been put in by a few members to get us to where we are at the moment.

The progress on A green thus far is good but the growth is expected to slow down over winter. In the spring, when the growth improves, it will be top dressed and laser levelled. It is anticipated that the green will not be playable until early in the New Year.

B green is in good condition and will be used sparingly during the off season to ensure a good playing surface for the beginning of the bowling season. C and D greens are showing signs of wear and will be rotated with B green throughout the rest of the off season. E green will be used the most until the start of the season in conjunction with the rotation of the other greens.

At the moment C and D greens have an infestation of earth worms which has become 15

quite a concern. The Green’s staff are currently experimenting with a new product to try and irradiate the problem.

With the ever increasing demands on our greens, it is a constant challenge to sustain them throughout the year and I have to thank Tony, Ron and John, with direction from Richard Cox, for a great job. Well done.

You will have noticed that a great deal of time and effort has been put into simplifying and beautifying the gardens. Forty-two Hibiscus trees have been planted along the back fence so that in the future there will be a nice show of yellow flowers and green foliage for most of the year. Special thanks go to Ken Vercoe, Mike Thornett, Kath Harris and a few dedicated volunteers for the work they have put into this face-lift program.

Additional paving will be laid under the shade cloth behind A and B greens and between E green and the Croquet green. It is also proposed that work on limestone edging will commence in the near future.

Many thanks to the time put in by Kevin Cook who has been the mainstay in producing a playing surface which the Croquet players are very happy with. This area is also receiving a face-lift in the form of gardens, paving, furniture and an upgrade of the shed.

I, along with the green’s staff and committee, would like to thank the Executive Committee and the Men’s Bowls Committee for their help and support through last year and with their continued help, we look forward to maintaining the high quality of our greens and surrounds.

Carlton Mid Easter Mixed Fours Versatility Carnival

nce again our Easter Carnival was a great success. The Saturday winners were Clair Hanlon, Peter Blake, Ray Stapledon and Fran Bracknell.

Ladies Match Report

O

ur Mother and Daughter day was held on Sunday the 28th April on a beautiful warm autumn day with 36 ladies participating. The two games of 11 ends were played in the spirit in which this event was intended to be, and that is good fun and friendship. The day I think went off well with some of our regular daughters to this event renewing their friendships with ladies that they have met in previous years. The winners were Sharon and Paula Eggers, Joy Hennessy and her daughter Val Crisp and Shelley Jeffs and her daughter Shannon Bilich.

The afternoon was finished off with a sausage sizzle compliments of Ian Marshall, Roy Bracknell and of course Joan Whitham. My thanks to all of them without whom these events would be left sadly lacking.

Nominated Mixed Pairs is proving popular on a Wednesday afternoon. We welcome the new bowlers that are participating for the first time and also our regular players.

I will take this opportunity to thank my Match Committee for their support and help over the last 2 years and wish the incoming committee every success for the future.

Umpire’s Corner

I

have often been asked about any unusual umpiring situations that have arisen with our umpires. One incident occurred some years ago during country week on B green where at that time the rubber bank did not come all the way down to the sand in the ditch leaving a gap of a couple of inches. During one game the jack was driven into the ditch and almost disappeared through the gap.

The umpire was called as one team believed the jack was dead, however there was nothing in the rules that clearly covered this situation. The umpire applied the rule of common sense and fair play and ruled that as a small part of the jack was still showing on the ditch side of the rubber bank, the jack was still live.

Another incident involved one of our umpires being called to check the distance of the delivered jack on a trial end before the start of a game. Wrong Call! The team that delivers the jack on a trial end can then place the jack at any distance they choose, irrespective of where the jack was delivered. (The distance should not be changed during the course of the trial end).

A very rare incident was reported recently where a toucher and the jack were sitting in the ditch only a few inches apart and considered to be unbeatable. An opponent’s bowl came up slowly to the edge of the green, fell over and rested on top of the toucher in the ditch. (See photograph).

The umpire was called as one team believed the opponent’s bowl was dead but the umpire ruled that as part of the opponent’s bowl was still ‘on the green’ the bowl was alive and needed to be considered when determining which bowl was shot.

If anyone knows of any other unusual umpiring situations, please let me know and I would be happy to include them for the benefit of our readers.

Darts Report

T

he darts season is now into full swing and although we are not travelling as well this year as previous years I believe everybody is enjoying themselves and there is still a large part of the season to go.

This years darts trip away is to Bruce Rock on the 17th and 18th of August.

I would like to thank Ian Marshall and Glenn Boston for making the arrangements and hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will be able to confirm accommodation and program for the day’s events.

Pilbara Bowling League versus Sorrento

T

he annual Pilbara vs Sorrento match was played on Sunday 14th April, with 87 bowlers present. Eleven mixed teams of four represented Sorrento, but there was 19

one team of three for the Pilbara. Sorrento prevailed for the third year in a row, winning six games, drawing two and losing three games.

Across all eleven matches the aggregate shot difference was only fifteen shots. For Sorrento, the best result was a nineteen shot win to Graeme Heard, Peter Blake, David Cowell and Betty Stern. The Sorrento team of Norm Claffey, Stan van Mosseveld, Robyn van Mosseveld and Mike McGeehan also recorded a good fourteen shot win to be next best for the home team.

Thanks to Ian Marshall and Vonnie King for organising and putting the Pilbara teams on the rinks. An enjoyable day was had by all, and we look forward to a rematch around the same time next year.

Some More “Hot Hints from Heardie”

P

utting the jack at the Skipper’s feet is an important part of the game especially when a change in length is required.

Remember that Jack delivery is a pendulum action of the arm with an even and continuous forward movement.

The palm of the hand should follow the jack in a natural follow through. Begin the backswing before the step. Step forward and bend down at the same time taking a normal walking step.

The jack is released when the arm is slightly in front of the front foot, assisting the player to deliver the jack smoothly out of the hand onto the green without dropping or bumping onto the green. The effort applied to the jack at the point of delivery will determine how far the jack will travel before coming to rest.

Increasing the speed of the delivery will increase the pendulum and length of step.

Decreasing the speed of the delivery will result in a decreased run of the jack. The same action will apply to your bowls. Ensure the action remains fluent throughout the delivery.

Men’s Pennant Play-offs

T

hursday Pennant play-offs produced five teams competing for the last promotion, but unfortunately only one was successful.

2 Red went to Nollamara and played Mt. Lawley, and lost by 56-67 with Mt. Lawley 21

going on in the afternoon to win and were promoted. 2 Blue 1 played at home against North Beach and lost 57-70 with North Beach going on in the afternoon to lose to Doubleview.

4 Blue were supposed to play at home but due to the Ladies Country Week there were insufficient greens so they played at Osborne Park against Bayswater and lost 47-60.

Well done 5 Red who were the only successful team of the day. They played at Innaloo against Merriwa and had a convincing win 84-40.

Alongside, Beaumaris were knocking the home team Innaloo out of the play-offs. The afternoon game between Sorrento and Beaumaris ended with Sorrento winning 66-53, giving us another fourth division team next season.

Saturday was not so productive in the play-offs. Only two teams qualified playing away. 4 Gold went to Scarborough playing against Yanchep with ex Sorrento player John Adams playing for them, but they lost in the morning 63-88. Meanwhile 5 Red were having a better run at Nollamara playing against the Valley. One team got away to a flyer being 13-0 after four ends and winning 41-12 and the other three teams did well also, one drawing, one went down by one shot and the third winning by five shots, so it was a relaxing morning winning 102-69. We knew it would be a different game in the afternoon against Nollamara who beat Kalamunda in the morning.

The afternoon game started well, by the halfway mark, Sorrento were 20 up on the aggregate, but as usual games turn and it came down to the last end of the last rink playing to win this tussle, with Sorrento winning by 4 shots. Well done to the Des Bennett’s dream team. ( See Tribute below) – Ron Burroughs

We Remember you Des!

A

t the end of Pennant practice last year, Chairman of selectors, Des Bennett, canvassed a few capable Skips and other bowlers to play in Division 5 Red on Saturdays. This team was known as the” Travelling Team” and Des’s dream was to get 23

Sorrento out of this Division. Everyone asked agreed to accept the mission.

After 5 or 6 weeks we were sat at the top of the Division and feeling quite (or maybe a little over) confident and that’s when the downward spiral started It didn’t seem to matter how much we tried, we continued to punch below our weight but luckily we were helped by other results, and managed to finish 3rd, tied on points.

The rest is history and after a resounding semi-final victory we managed to win the nail biting final defending a 2 shot aggregate on the last end of the match. So in remembrance of you, Des, your dream came true and the mission accomplished.

Finally – Neville Cleary, God Bless him, was a passionate supporter and player in our Team, only missing the finals. We will all miss you.

Men’s 1 White “Best Player Award”

G

eoff Murray repeated his success from last year by again winning the best player award for the Men’s Saturday 1 White Division. The count was held on Friday night 5th April 2013 at the Club and was attended by a good number of the players and their partners.

For the 2012/13 season, a total of 24 players represented the Division. 8 players played all 17 games (1 game was washed out), 5 played 15 or 16 games and 1 played 14 games. As in previous years, players in each rink cast their votes for only the other members of their rink.

With up to 14 players vying for the bragging rights of being the best player, it was thought that this year would be the closest count for several years. However Geoff Murray, playing as lead for the rink skippered by Ron Rogers, polled consistently well throughout the season and ended up a decisive winner of the trophy.

The final top 3 placings were: Geoff Murray – 258 votes, Peter Crow – 228 votes and Ian Linford with 225 votes. Congratulations to Geoff for an outstanding season and winning the trophy for successive years.

Thanks go to the helpers who provided the excellent feast at the presentation (Gaie Bone and Judy Brown), our recorders and maintainers of the votes (Robyn and John Godfrey) and the other people who hopped in to help on the night.

Police vs Sorrento

O

n Wednesday 20th March, 24 bowlers were hosted by Sorrento for the annual match. Sorrento were represented by 20 men and 4 women bowlers, and the Police Bowling Association by a similar ratio. The Police Bowling Association organise these matches as preparation for their annual tournament, which this year is being held in Shepparton, Victoria.

At the end of the evening, the match ledger stood at 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses for each side. Sorrento had two big wins, and two smaller losses so carried the aggregate to prevail by 17 shots. Ian Marshall’s rink won the best rink prize. An enjoyable evening for all, and I am looking forward to next year already.

Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?’ After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, ‘Wedding Cake’ Did you hear that Mt. Gravatt bowlers set new world record. After 250 ‘touchers’, 300 ‘ends’, and 38 hours a Brisbane lawn bowls club has set a new world record for the longest continuous game of indoor bowls. Guinness World Record attempts are synonymous for the strict checks and balances, with more people running the attempt than there were bowling.

The team consisted of six people rotating in teams of two, two hours on the green one hour off. Bowlers and supporters let out hearty cheers when the team equalled the 36 hour record held by a club in the United Kingdom, and continued bowling for another two hours. The club raised money for prostate research during the record attempt.

Nobody managed to identify Dick Currie as the handsome man in the photograph alongside. As usual Monique Kopec tried very hard but even she was unsuccessful We received only two complaints about our last newsletter. The first was about the misspelling of Bob Steven’s name. Apologies.

It was either Denise’s fault or Microsoft’s spell checker. The second complaint was from the Snowman who was disappointed that his photo (with his partner Bruce) had not been included in the April Newsletter.. Well Snowy it’s in this edition so you owe me a beer!

Tip #2: To rid your computer of unwanted software which not only can slow the system down, but cause problems as well, the best I have come across is Ccleaner which you can get from - http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner Tip #3: When you compose an e-mail, there are three options when putting in the recipients address - To: cc: and bcc: To: All the recipients will see each others address. cc: This stands for Carbon Copy. This will show the recipient to other people as in To: In the old days of typewriters, if you were sending a letter to your Insurance company disputing a claim, you might send a copy (cc) to your solicitor. bcc: This is possibly the most important but least used option. This stands for “Blind Carbon Copy” which means that each recipient only sees their name listed. Very handy if you do not want person A to see that you have sent a copy to person B. Tip #4: It is very important to protect a persons privacy. It is not always a good idea to let other people know other peoples e-mails address. Therefore when forwarding emails, make sure you delete the details of the person who sent you the email and any other person listed.

Letter from Northern Knights Cricket Club Dear Greg On behalf of the Northern Knights Cricket Club we would like to sincerely thank you for your assistance, the committee and your members for allowing our Club to access Social membership with the Sorrento Bowls Club.

We had many enjoyable “Post Match” dissections of our games in your Clubhouse and on every occasion I was there, could not speak highly enough of the welcome we had from the members and the staff of the Club. It is a very friendly place in which to unwind after the games and enjoy a drink, and we were always greeted with an encouraging comment from the locals.

Our club does not actually have a Club Room so to have your facility available for use is an absolute bonus for us and I trust that our guys treated the club and its members with the respect you deserve. There was only one occasion that I can recall where we had to tell one of our guys to turn the volume down as we treat this as a privilege to be able to utilise your facilities.

We had a very enjoyable Bowls night during the season and currently look forward to our end of season trophy presentations to be held in two weekends time.

An anticipated Cricket Match against the “elite” cricketers of your club is on the cards 32

and a return bowling bout would also be welcomed in the lead up to the next season.

No doubt rules would need to be modified to accommodate your lack of cricket skills and our lack of bowling skills!! This will be eagerly awaited! I believe Mr. Bruce Eagles will gladly put his hand up for a gig! Thank you again. With best wishes to the members of the Sorrento Bowling Club.

Dorothy Dix – Your Agony Aunt Dear Dorothy Dix, My partner has a long record of money problems. She runs up huge credit-card bills and at the end of the month, if I try to pay them off, she shouts at me, saying I am stealing her money. She says pay the minimum and let the next lot worry about the rest, but already we can hardly keep up with the interest. Also, she has been so arrogant and abusive toward our neighbours that most of them no longer speak to us. The few that do are an odd bunch, to whom she has been giving a lot of expensive gifts, running up our bills even more. Also, she has gotten religious, even though she denies it. One week she hangs out with Catholics and the next with people who say the Pope is the Anti-Christ, and the next she’s with Muslims. Finally, the last straw: She’s demanding that before anyone can be in the same room with her, they must sign a loyalty oath. It’s just so horribly creepy!

Our Club Mascots – “Dennis And Lilly”

T

urn up for a game of bowls at Sorrento and it’s a pretty safe bet you will hear two things. Firstly, you won’t have to wait long before the shout of an exasperated Skipper urging one of his team to take more grass reverberates around the green. Then, with not quite the same gusto that was generated by the appearance of Australia’s greatest-ever fast bowler, you will hear people saying – “hello Dennis” and “hello Lilly”.

Just as Dennis Lillee was a household name at cricket grounds around the world, so too are Dennis Saunders and his gorgeous Cavalier King Charles dog, Lilly, institutions at Sorrento. There are not too many days when Dennis, 84 in October, and the 5½ year old Lilly, don’t slip quietly through the front gate to watch the action. Their presence is always welcome but watching is what Dennis, a former top-shelf bowler, does mainly now following a series of back complaints.

Born in County Durham in 1929, Dennis and his wife, Rita, finally settled in Perth at the third attempt, in the late 1980’s and, without ever having bowled, joined the Floreat Park club. A bricklayer and stonemason by trade, Dennis and Rita wasted no time cementing their places in the bowling fraternity. Rita, who passed away 13 years ago, was Floreat Park’s novice champion in her first year as well as, remarkably, being runner up in the club’s singles, pairs, triples and fours the very same year.

Dennis, a Skipper in those days, made it to Division 1 White and would have played Division 1 Red (now Premier division) had he and Rita not moved to Sorrento. Once settled, Rita proceeded to win Sorrento’s club singles in 1996-97 and 1998-99 followed by the pairs in 1999-2000 and was bowler-of-the-year two years in a row.

Dennis also gets a mention on the honour boards as a winner of the mixed fours in 2000-2001 and pairs in 2003-2004.

After originally declaring he did not want a dog, the decision was taken out of Dennis’ hands when his granddaughter gave him a little puppy, already named Lilly, as a Christmas present. But while it’s patently obvious Dennis has changed his attitude towards having a canine companion, he tends to down play his bowling achievements. Lilly does not have the same opportunity.

Topping her CV is when a couple of years ago Lilly was appointed mascot for the WA Police team in their interstate 34

competition against fellow law enforcers. Kitted out in a coat and police hat, Lilly watched as the WA Police team won the event for the first time in 15 years.

Her reputation spread with many, mostly female bowlers, rubbing Lilly for luck whenever they spot her sitting alongside Dennis. But Dennis is not so sure that is the main reason -- he reckons a lot of the girls, especially in winter, rub Lilly to warm up their hands. Good clubs have plenty of characters and Dennis and Lilly are up there with the best of them.

Our Bowlers of the Year 2012/2013

F

irst of all some information on how the bowler of the year is decided. This is the formula that the Men’s Match Committee have been using for the last 3 years.

No points are awarded until a player wins a quarter-final, then5 points for each win in the Major competition including grand final 3 points for each win in the Plate competition including grand final 2 points for elimination in a Major semi-final 3 points for runner-up in a Major grand final 1 point for runner-up in a Plate grand final

The following point system was used to determine the Lady Bowler of the Year for the 2012/2013 season:Major Winner 5 Points Runner Up 3 Points Plate Winner 2 Points Based on the above John Godfrey and Wendy Saul were chosen as our Bowlers of the Year for 2012/13.

John ‘Dorrie” Godfrey has always been interested in sport. He played league football in Tasmania with the Glenorchy Football Club and played some bowls with his Dad at the Glenorchy Club before leaving Tassie to come to the West. He started playing bowls at Sorrento in 1991 under the guidance of Ben Dinning. Over the years he struck up a good friendship with Ben and Shirley, spending time with him during his last days, and to this day still misses his mate.

John has been a good club member and is always prepared to support mixed events and participation in the mixed Pairs with Pat Frawley got him some extra points by getting to the semi-finals. He won the Men’s Fours with Peter Crow, Brian Lucas and Brian 35

Collins and lost in the final of the Men’s Triples (with Ian Linford and Mick Martin) .

His wife Robyn tells me he is “not the best cook in the kitchen”. Apparently he doesn’t even like watching the cooking shows on TV and doesn’t even know how to turn the oven on!! When you ask his girls what his forte is in the kitchen they will tell you – Deep Fried Steak, Eggs and Chips. Obviously he is a Master Bowler rather than a Master Chef!

– Men’s Bowler of the Year with Men’s Captain – John Abbacrombie and Chairman of the Match Committee Trevor Orton Our lady winner, Wendy Saul was introduced to bowls when she completed a six week Introduction to Lawn Bowls course which is an Adult Education program they run in Hobart, Tasmania. She quickly became addicted to it like all of us, and thought it would be a great hobby and a good way to meet other people.

In 2006 Wendy moved to Perth to be with her family and joined Morley Bowling Club.

In her first year there she won the Mixed Pairs with her coach and they were referred to as the Master and his apprentice. She also played Tuesday and Saturday Pennants.

In 2010 Wendy joined Sorrento Bowling Club with her husband, Brian. Wendy didn’t waste any time fitting in and was soon playing in our colours on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

In 2011/12 Wendy was runner up in the 100 Up and was part of the runner up team in the Championship 4’s.

This year she has excelled by being runner up in the 100 Up, Winner of the Ladies Singles and part of the winning team in the Championship 4’s. Apart from all of that she has played an integral part in the Pennant teams that she has played in and a valued club member both on and off the green. Well done Wendy!

Tribute to Neville Cleary 1929 -2013

eville Cleary’s funeral was held on 3rd April 2013.

The service was conducted by Bruce Eagles. The following are some extracts from Bruce’s touching tribute to Neville: Welcome to this very special time as we come to remember, celebrate and farewell, Neville Cleary. The wonderful man we remember today began his earthly journey on the 20th March 1929 and he passed away on the 25th March. Today we will reflect on his 84 years and will seek to do so in a very honouring way.

Thank you for coming to support the family as they gradually adjust to life without there loved one. Lesley and the entire family appreciate your attendance today and we acknowledge that some have travelled quite a distance to be here, and that is appreciated. To be surrounded by people you care about is very important at a time like this and therefore spending these moments together not only helps the grief process but it fortifies us all for the journey ahead.

As a fellow member of the Sorrento Bowling Club it was my pleasure and privilege to know Neville as a bowler. Not only did he have great skills as a mature age player but was an absolute gentleman and a delight to be with either on the green or enjoying a drink in the club rooms. In the last few days I’ve heard so many comments from members applauding the fine contribution he made to the life and spirit of the club. We will all miss his gentle, quiet and competitive presence.

Neville’s 84-year journey has now come to an end and the least we can do is to honour him in life and in death. His experiences of life, and your knowledge of them, now become the storehouse of memories that you hold close to your heart. In that sense 37

Neville lives on within you, and I can only hope that thought brings a measure of comfort to you. Be encouraged that you knew Neville and that he knew you. Knowing someone genuinely, deeply, openly and respectfully is one of the finest human experiences and for that we can be very thankful.

Tribute to Ray Smith 1927- 2013

O

n Monday 27th May 2013 family and friends gathered at Pinnaroo to remember, celebrate and give thanks for the life of Ray. “Ray’s boys”, Graham, Wayne, Kevin and Alan paid tribute to their father. Their personal reflections reminded us all about Ray’s many skills and attributes as a World War 2 veteran, a baseballer, a golfer, a fisherman, a lawn bowler and a production manager in a bakery.

Ray was married to Ethel for 65 years. Ray and Ethel loved visiting Rottnest and spent many happy holidays on the island with their family. He and his lovely wife were very well liked and respected.

He was always a good father and in later life a special grandfather who knew all about each of his eleven grandchildren.

When Ray moved from Wembley he chose to join our Club. He always got on well with all his friends and players. He was quite reserved and did not “rock the boat” and never complained about Club decisions.

We will all remember Ray as a real gentleman who was liked by all. He was “a man of integrity” and has left a legacy that can be passed on. We have lost a good club member and friend. We all need to support Ethel in her sad loss.

Sports Specialists Pro Am 2013

n April a number of Pro Am bowls teams with strange names such as “The Coffey Grinders”, The Mini Me’s”, “The Windy Kilts”, ”The Receding Dreadlocks”, “S and S”, “The Short Circuits”, “The Banker” etc. got together for the inaugural Pro Am. 38

In the semi finals “The Cobras” (Ron Kuziela and Alan Susta) beat “The Short Circuits” (Wayne Gray and Dion Smith) 16-4 whilst in the other semi the under-rated team “The Snowmen” (Peter Snow and Peter Bilich) beat “The Crows Nest” (Peter Crow and David Wurtz 21-9.

In a closely contested final “The Cobras” beat “ The Snowmen” by 15-13 to win the $500 first prize. Apparently with the two Peters leading by one shot with one end to go a brilliant three from the Kuziela/ Susta team sealed the game.

Dash For Cash

T

he first of four monthly Dash for Cash events was held on Saturday 25th May. Thanks to continuing generous sponsorship from Safeway Security Screens, the attractive prize money on offer drew in several teams from outside the club. A total of 20 teams were (or appeared to be) registered and organised for the event.

Unfortunately due to a breakdown in communications, one-and-a-half teams failed to show up, which meant a hasty reorganisation of the draw, with Ray Stapledon and Brad Williams having to drop out. Sorry gents. I had been notified of four backup bowlers, but we needed six bowlers at the last minute, so it was 18 teams that ended up competing.

There were four matches of ten ends each played over two greens, with the overall winner being a Sorrento team of Lindsay Baker, Barry Jones, Barry Stewart and Rob Tozer taking home the chocolates by being the only team to win all four games.

The Runner-up team was also from Sorrento – Colin Stainsby, Tiger Hogan, Bruce Eagles and Barry Bradshaw. Third place was taken by regular visitors, the Quinns team of Trevor Hines, Barry Tighe, Don McKenzie and Bert Straw. The individual matches were shared around between visiting and local teams. The weather was magnificent, and a great day was experienced.

The next Dash for Cash is on Saturday 29th June. Get your teams together and on to the entry sheet now. I already have a couple of visiting teams registered, and may be limited to 24 teams, so get to it.

Lady Delegates’ Report The WA IRRR Competition (Northern Region) event was held on April 13th and 14th at Scarborough Bowling Club. Despite predictions of rain competitors enjoyed two days of fine weather. Six teams of four from each of the regions provided spectators with a fine display of bowls and although strongly contested, the games were played in the best traditions of the sport. Congratulations go to Eastern Region who made it a back to back celebration having won the trophy last year. Northern Region finished in second place followed by Southern and South Coastal Region respectively.

Following the main event Regional Selectors chose 2 teams of fours to represent their individual region in the All stars competition. These players were considered to have excelled over the two days of play although choosing 8 players from the original 24 certainly caused some headaches for the selectors!!

After eight ends of quality bowls against each region, Southern region finished in first spot closely followed by Northern, Eastern and South Coastal regions. The perpetual trophy and individual medallions were presented to the winners by Norma Samuels, Past President of Bowls WA. Next Year the competition will be hosted by the Southern Region We enjoyed the company and co-operation of the team managers, selectors and players from the other 3 Regions. To the Northern Region Committee my thanks for your contribution and support-we almost made it!!!

Some players have been using mechanical arms on an ad hoc basis. If the arm is used at the start of the game it MUST be used until the game concludes.

Contrary to rumour there has been no overall ban placed on the wearing of Lightfeet Bowling Shoes. Providing the shoes have SMOOTH soles they remain approved for wear on the greens Tuesday Pennants commence 22nd October to Tuesday 17th December (then a 2 week Xmas Break) and recommence on Tuesday 7th January to Tuesday 25th February (game 18). Finals 10th to 12th March. Saturday Pennants commence 2nd November to 14 December (Xmas Break) then 18th January to 15th March. Finals 22nd March.

The Bowls WA Ladies Forum was held at Cambridge BC on 21st May. Major agenda items included Pennant Finals Format, the charging of green fees for State Events, Pennant Player Registration (likely to revert to 16 weeks from the current 14 weeks) and the “Extreme Weather Policy.”

ue to very generous sponsorship from Trevor’s Carpets, a handicap men’s fours event was conducted in April. Sixteen teams of four bowlers were formed, with a limit of one division one bowler per team, with lower division bowlers making up the remainder of the team. Some interesting combinations were formed. The format was four matches of 11 ends each, with a compulsory green change between the morning and afternoon pairs of matches.

Cash prize money was awarded to all match winners, and there could be no draws, so there was interest in all matches with one round to go.

Three teams had each won all of their games going into the last match. Two of these teams played each other in their final match, so it

was only possible for two teams to win all four matches before the last match With $500 on the table, there was plenty of interest in the results.

There was also one team who had not won any of their first three matches, and need a win to collect. As it turned out, John 44

Sanders’ team of Roland Hill, Ray Dunn and Bob Jeffs, who had won their first three matches lost their last match.

So it came down to a match between Ron Rogers, Herbie Eisenmann, Kevin Coffey and Alan Susta opposed to Ian Linford with Keith Cooper, Jim Ironside and Phil Bilich for the major prize. Ian’s team prevailed on the

day. John Sanders’ team came in second overall by dint of a superior shots up score.

At the end of the day, every one of the sixteen teams won at least one match, even Tony Sabatino’s “Italian connection” team of Tom Nasuti, Eddie Tassone and Pat Di Chiera who had to win their last match to collect. But they did it. A special award for the “losingest” team of Brad Williams, Steve Mortimer, Guy Burdon and Peter Davies was also awarded.

Better luck next time, fellas.

The hard luck story of the day had to be Alan Rolls who gave up his spot in the winning team to Phil Bilich. You owe Alan a drink, Phil!

A great day was had by all, and enormous thanks to Ray Green and Trevor’s Carpets for their sponsorship. Trevor’s Carpets is definitely the place to go when you need new floor coverings.
