Reasonisnottheextirpateofthepassions,buttheir antagonist.

ThecaseofthethirstofKingDavidmayserveatleastto makethisclearer.

ForwhenDavidhadfoughtthelive-longdayagainstthe Philistines,andbythehelpofourcountry'swarriorshadslain manyofthem,hecameateventide,allfordonewithsweatand toil,totheroyaltent,aroundwhichwasencampedthewhole armyofourancestors

Instead,anirrationaldesireforthewaterthatwasinthe possessionoftheenemywithgrowingintensityburnedhim upandunmannedandconsumedhim

Thenwhenhisbody-guardmurmuredagainstthecraving oftheking,twoyouths,mightywarriors,ashamedthattheir kingshouldlackhisdesire,putonalltheirarmour,andtooka water-vessel,andscaledtheenemy'sramparts;andstealing undetectedpasttheguardsatthegate,theysearchedthrough alltheenemy'scamp

Andtheybravelyfoundthespring,anddrewfromita draughtfortheking

ButDavid,thoughstillburningwiththethirst,considered thatsuchadraught,reckonedasequivalenttoblood,wasa grievousdangertohissoul
