Common Accessibility Barriers In Learning Environments

Learners with mental health conditions and learning disabilities represent more than half of the learners registered with ALS In addition to mental health conditions and learning disabilities, it is important to keep in mind that learners may be experiencing a wide variety of other disabilities

We encourage faculty to plan for and expect learners with disabilities to be enrolled in their courses. At the college, over 30% of learners self-identify as living with one or more disabilities and 14% of learners at the college register with ALS for accommodations. Common barriers encountered by learners include but are not limited to, timed assessments (quizzes, tests and exams) as well as the need for flexibility with respect to assignment due dates and having to take notes during lectures. Faculty can take a proactive approach by implementing flexible learning and Universal Design practices in their courses such as posting course materials and lecture notes in advance, providing flexibility with respect to assignment due dates, and making recording of lectures available to learners. Additional tips and resources are available on the Innovative Learning EDI Curriculum Toolkit and SWEL's Thriving in the Classroom Toolkit.

Meeting 1:1 with a learner with disabilities can support the learner with clarifying course content and/or expectations for assessments.
