A MESSAGE

from Dr. Dave Bray

Greetings Huegel Families, Happy May! I can hardly believe that we are in the final stretch of the 2016-2017 School Year. I am continuously amazed by the growth and progress of our students, and I look forward to finishing the year on a high note! We have many fun events to look forward to, including several field trips, 5th grade Completion Ceremony and Picnic, the Carnival, Latino Heritage Night and much more. As the days get longer, please remember to help your child get a good night’s sleep. We have noticed an increase in children arriving late, many looking very tired! Also, thanks for continuing to encourage your child to complete their homework, and to read every night. As we look forward to next year, we are in the early stages of class placement. When we create class lists, we consider each child’s academic and interpersonal strengths, and ensure that each child has academic peers. Next year we will have 28 classrooms, including 4K. I have enjoyed being your interim principal this year! You have amazing children, and I have been honored to be their principal. Preparations are underway for the hiring of a new principal for Huegel. Stay tuned for further information. Take good care:-) Dave Bray Interim Principal

The Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools Trolley visited Huegel! Huegel parent, Sherri Swartz led the initiative in writing a grant to support Lego League teams at. Huegel and the project was selected to receive a $3,000 grant to help cover costs for the 2017-2018 Lego League Teams. Last year, students and parents formed teams to learn about engineering and computer programming using Legos. Participants were able to compete at a tournament, and showcase their creativity, teamwork, and research projects about animals. Thank you Sherri, for your efforts to make this opportunity accessible to ALL students!

Committee of Families of Latino Students at Huegel Officers Franco, Ávila, and Corey were guests of the Committee of Families of Latino Students at Huegel. They shared information about Amigos en Azul (Friends in Blue). Members of different local law enforcement agencies come together to build relationships with people in our communities and keep them informed.

TECHNOLOGY IN FIRST GRADE We have been excited to embrace technology this year in first grade! Last year, students had to share devices with partners, but this year, we are 1-to-1 with our Chromebooks. This has allowed us to take on more and more technology and weave it through our curriculum in new ways. We continue to use programs like RAZ Kids and Dreambox to help build fluency and promote engagement in reading and math. These programs let our students work independently and progress at their own individualized learning levels. In addition, we use applications like Google Docs and Google Slides, coupled with our monitors, to project our morning meeting messages, brainstorm ideas, share directions for activities and lessons, and display poems and other learning tools throughout our work day. We take class “brain breaks” with GoNoodle, project our weekly NewsCurrents discussion slides, play Kahoot to test our knowledge, and quickly Google (and display!) the answers to questions that come up throughout the day. MAY/JUNE 2017

Since each student has his or her own device to use, we have been able to work on more involved and intensive projects that allow us to use our technology in meaningful and relevant ways. During our third-quarter informational writing unit, some of the first grade classes took the reports we researched and wrote on animals and turned them into digital Google Slides presentations. We typed up the reports and searched for relevant photographs and images to match our words and enhance our reports. They were then able to share those reports digitally with parents and family members at home! Some of our classes have also started exploring platforms like Google Classroom, which teachers can use to share links and information and students can use to share ideas and write responses to classroom activities and lessons (for instance, to write responses that show what we have learned in NewsCurrents for the week or type up reading responses to texts we are discussing in reading groups). It’s been fun to use our technology to engage our students and enhance our learning. We can’t wait to see what our first graders do in the future! 5

Huegel Lego League Kickoff for Fall 2017 Tuesday May 16 @ 5 PM Is your child interested in a fun and challenging experience involving Legos, robots, beginner computer programming, and water? Sign them up for a Huegel Lego League team for next fall! Lego League is open to Huegel students who will be in 1st through 5th grades next year. Teams will start meeting as soon as school starts in the fall. The season finishes when the team participates in a tournament in the Madison area in early November. Along the way kids will get to experience fun challenges in engineering, computer programming, research, innovation, and teamwork. The theme for this year’s challenges will be water--”Hydrodynamics” and “Aqua Adventure”. Those who participate are asked to donate $25 to help cover costs,k and meetings will be at the school. Kickoff meeting is Tuesday May 16 at 5 PM in the Huegel Library. Come to find out more about Lego League, see who else is interested, and sign up for fall if you are ready. If you’re not sure, you can sign up for a “check with me later” list. Lego League Coaches needed! For kids to get to do Lego League, we need parents to volunteer to be coaches! No experience or knowledge of computer programming is needed. Lego League coaches can set the time of your team’s meetings, and your children get to be the first to sign up. Plus you can bring home a Lego Education Robotics kit for the summer and during the fall Lego League season, to explore and play with your family! Each team needs at least two coaches, so sign up with a friend, or we can put you together with another coach. Please e-mail Sherri at legohuegel@gmail.com if you have questions or to sign up to coach.

HUEGEL 4-H As the last Huegel 4-H meeting approaches, we would like to thank JulieAnn Stawicki and Cindy DĂaz for leading this initiative at our school. Throughout the year, participants focused on learning science through hands on activities, and guest speakers like the Insect Ambassadors from UW-Madison. At the end of the school year, students also collaborate on a community service project of their choice. Without the support of our dedicated parents, these opportunities would be out of our reach. So we would like to thank Badhri Lankella, and the rest of our parents, for their time as helpers. University of Wisconsin students were guest speakers, teaching 4-H students about flat worms that regenerate on their own.

MILLENIUM SOCCER CLUB Our fields are full of Eagles again! Special thanks to Dan Wood and Tom Grogg of the Millennium Soccer Club, for making this opportunity available to our students. We would also like to thank volunteers like Anne Knezevic, Coach Mike, Coach Janelle, Zach, Jill and all of the high school students that join us each Saturday, for their time and dedication. 8
