A MESSAGE
from Dr. Dave Bray
Dear Huegel Families, It’s hard to believe we are halfway through the year! This is an exciting time of year because we really see students make large leaps in their learning. Our dedicated staff is always working hard to make sure your child continues to learn and grow to his/her full potential.
UPCOMING
EVENTS FEB 3 - NO SCHOOL - STAFF ONLY DAY
Now that there is finally snow we have had lots of fun playing outdoors! Students have been sledding down the hills, and building snow forts and snow people. Thank you for continuing to make sure your child has the proper gear with which to enjoy winter. While we do stay indoors when the temperatures and wind chill dip below 10 below, we do make it a priority to send students outside for physical activity and fresh air. We believe that students need plenty of opportunities to move and play, and we acknowledge the research that links high levels of physical activity to better academic performance and behavior. Congratulations to our Huegel “Family and Community Engagement Team” (FACE) that has been nominated for the Excellence with Equity Award. More information will be coming.

THE NEW K-5 REPORT CARDS On Thursday, February 2, the new version of your child’s report card will be coming home. The new format of the report card is designed to accomplish the following: • Address the concerns over timeliness and efficiency of using it as a communication tool. • Create a standards-based report card that is based upon the expectations of the Madison School District. • To provide a better and more informative tool for families. • To collect consistent and accurate evidence of learning and progress through a recognized body of evidence. • Focus on the strengths of your child. • Shares your child’s progress towards meeting the Social Emotional Learning Standards (SELS). • Reports Spanish proficiency for Dual Language Immersion learners. Teachers will use the following performance indicators to report progress: (E) Emerging—Student begins to show initial understanding of grade-level expectations for the end of the year. (Dv) Developing—Student is developing understanding and is approaching grade-level expectations for the end of the year (M) Meeting—Student consistently meets grade-level expectations for the end of the year. (Ex) Exceeding—Student consistently exceeds grade-level expectations for the end of the year. TECHNOLOGY UPDATE The 5th grade team is using technology on a daily basis as one tool to enhance student learning and engagement. On a daily basis (for about 15 min), 5th graders are using adaptive math programs that meet kids at a “just right” level. It’s a bit like every student having their own personal tutor for what they need to work on. These programs can also be worked on from home. We have been working on a state research project to which we will continue to add more components. Each student has a state they are the “expert” on. After using both books and internet sites, students are compiling an informational presentation on Google Slides. From this work, they will be making large state posters that will be displayed in the 5th grade hallway before Spring Break. We will utilize the green screen to put kids at an attraction in their state, as well as learning how to add QR codes on their posters to link their Google Slide Show. Classrooms will then be able to use the set of Ipads to scan the QR codes in the “Tour of the United States!”
