A MESSAGE

from Dr. Dave Bray

Greetings Huegel Families!

UPCOMING

As always, the year is flying by, and there are many exciting things going on at Huegel. CONGRATULATIONS to 4th grader Sriveda Lankella who won Huegel’s All School Spelling Bee, and represented us at the All City Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 11. Congratulations also to Layla Al Ali who was the runner up:-) The Huegel Staff had a wonderful day of professional development on February 3. Our focus was on how to ensure that all of students are getting what they need academically, socially, and emotionally through: • Content and Instructional Practices • School Structure and Climate • Family and Community Engagement We finished up at Ten Pin Alley for some fun and fellowship while demonstrating our bowling prowess. If you haven’t noticed our “Family and Community Engagement Tree” located outside of the office, please take a look. Represented on this tree, are the four family groups that are doing great things at Huegel. These are: • HAPPEN Group • Latino Group • PTO • Huegel Families of Students with Special Needs As always, it does indeed take a village to raise a child. By now, you should have received information about the upcoming process that will be used in selecting the new principal. If you have questions, please contact me.

HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE The fourth grade team uses technology in all subjects to increase student engagement and provide opportunities for differentiated learning. In literacy with Ms. Ouellette and Ms. Patterson the students have chosen an African American historical figure that they will create a biography presentation on. Through the use of google slides, the library portal and general research guideline they will be able to effectively research and gather information the person of their choosing. We also worked in collaboration with REACH to produce over 80 posters featuring famous African Americans. Alongside this major writing project the students are able to read books through Overdrive, listen to audiobooks and practice reading comprehension skills through front row. Mr. Lark and Ms. Rose are also working towards using technology to differentiate math instruction for all students. One aspect that we are excited about is creating ‘hyper docs’ that include videos, practice and modules for students to work through a fourth grade math standard. These are always engaging due to the variety of content and type of media. As a fourth grade team we are always working to infuse technology in all of our lessons!

HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS

Celebrate Smiles is coming to Huegel on March 21st-30th, 2017 The Celebrate Smiles dental program will be at Nuestro Mundo on March 2nd-8th. This program provides dental check-ups as well as preventive sealants, fluoride varnish and other needed treatment to kids in grades 4K-5 who might otherwise go without dental care. Dental staff from Access Community Health Centers will screen children right at school using portable equipment. All participants get a screening as well as sealants and fluoride varnish. Children who need it can also receive a dental cleaning, fillings, pulpotomy, stainless steel crowns and extractions. Although there is no cost for these services, the program bills BadgerCare (Wisconsin’s Medicaid program) and private dental insurance for any treatment if families that have coverage. Kids with private dental insurance will only be eligible for sealants and fluoride varnish. To sign up, fill out the consent sent home with your child. A printable consent may also be found online at accesscommunityhealthcenters.org/services/dental/celebrate-smiles/ . Please complete both sides of the form, sign and return it to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. If you need another form, please contact the School Health Office at 204-3112. For questions about the program, call (608) 852-2781.

Congratulations!! Congratulations to all our amazing 3rd, 4th & 5th grade spellers.
