A MESSAGE

from Dr. Dave Bray

Happy Spring! I hope this newsletter finds you well. Can you believe we are in the final quarter of the year? Many exciting things are happening at Huegel. We are all still very excited about our “Read Your Heart Out Day” experience that we had on February 24. In celebration of Black History Month, we had a parade, close to 100 volunteer readers, a soul food luncheon, and an inspirational all school assembly featuring Jacquelyn Hunt. The students also sang a rousing rendition of “We Shall Overcome.” During the 2015-16 school year, Wisconsin rolled out a new assessment called the Wisconsin Forward Exam. The Exam is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. These standards outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career ready. The Forward Exam is administered online in the spring of each school year at: grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics, grades 4 and 8 in Science and, grades 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/ or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured. The Forward Exam is a high quality, research-based, and affordable assessment that meets Wisconsin’s expectations. It is a customized assessment with innovative item types that includes test items reviewed and approved by Wisconsin educators. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be taking this exam at the end of March.

Our PBS focus for March is ROAR, (Respect others and always respect yourself.) Students are learning that when we “ROAR”, we show respect, make others feel safe, and do the right thing.

We have such talented 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who put on a marvelous concert on March 15. Such talented children you have! Take good care, David Bray, Interim Principal HUEGEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

THANK YOU!! Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped make our Spring Fling celebration a great success. We all had an enchanted evening full of magical fun!

Technology in Second Grade Once second grade students enter their rooms they begin to interact with technology. Seven and eight year old students thrive in school when they know the flow of the day and are aware of changes from their routine. Teachers use the 70” monitors as communication boards posting information such as Must Do/ Can Do activities that need to be completed during in the day. This helps to get the children’s work areas ready for the day and establishes routines and expectations. Students interact with several reading and writing apps or websites throughout the day. During Literacy Groups, we use a reading program called RazKids in addition to regular books. The program makes it easier for teachers to assign books at each child’s reading level. RazKids can be especially effective as it gives children experience answering comprehension questions by encouraging them to go back into the text. We also use other e-books such as Storyline, PebbleGo, and BookFlix. Little Birdtales and Google Slides have also been used for writing and research activities in the classroom and at REACH.

Technology is also used for other content areas and other purposes. Dreambox and a suite of programs called Math Playground focus on math concepts. Dreambox is particularly useful since it can be accessed at home by parents and students. Other programs such as Google Classroom, allows teachers to individualize curriculum and student assignments while programs such as Quizlet, Google Forms and Kahoot allow teachers to better evaluate how students are learning certain concepts. We use technology in other ways, such as for “brain breaks” and for “mindfulness practices”. Mind Yeti, Go Noodle, or Yoga for Kids are just some of the tools we use for these activities. Finally, second grade teachers use Google Classroom to share links, activities and assignments we want students to complete. The tools and programs that we use will always be evolving and changing but the underlying goals are largely consistent which are to encourage learning and comprehension and to make learning fun. Second Grade Team

CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to our Lesli VĂĄzquez Vargas, winner of the 2017 Students at the Center category. This award recognizes a District employee who uses a student-centered approach to engage them in school. We are very proud.

Children are the center of our work. We encourage their fullest potential as artists, scientists, inventors, naturalists, explorers, and above all, empathetic global citizens. We strive to create a community hub that takes into account the opportunities and challenges of our locale where all children, and the adults in their lives, feel welcomed, valued, connected, and included.
