punt that set up a Gunter 10-play, 87yard drive that was finished off by an Overman 5-yard score which gave Gunter their first lead of the night with 7:11 left in the second. Howe and Gunter traded punts on the next three possessions and the Tigers won the field position game. Ivy Hellman scored from the two yard line to finish a 3-play, 20-yard drive to up the advantage to 28-14 which became the halftime score. Gunter stormed out of the gate with a 10-play, 56-yard drive that ended on Hellman’s second score of the night from the three yard line. The lead was 34-14 Gunter with 9:24 left in the third. But Howe answered right back with an 8-play, 75-yard drive that ended on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Haley to Jones. Gunter’s lead shrunk to 3421 with 6:42 left in the third.
On Gunter’s next possession, Hellman raced in from the 15 yard line to end a 7-play, 52-yard drive to give Gunter a 40-21 lead at the 4:48 mark in the second. The effects of the faced paced Gunter offense began to take a toll and Sloan went untouched for 56 yards after a Howe punt to give Gunter a 47-21 lead with 2:29 left in the third. Entering the fourth quarter, Tiger quarterback Luke Dodd hit Mitchell Gage for a 50-yard bomb to close out the scoring for the Tigers at 54-21. Howe made one last effort with an 11-play drive but was turned away on fourth down with 5:43 left in the game. Howe moves to 1-1 in district play and will host Bells Friday night who beat Blue Ridge 82-32 with 30 of their points coming in the second quarter. The Panthers are also 2-1 on the season. Bells is coached by former Howe offensive coordinator Dale West who helped Howe to eight playoff games during the 2014, 15, and 16 seasons. Howe owns the overall series with a 35-10 record but hasn’t beaten Bells since 2018 prior to West’s arrival as head coach.
