UIL Classification (Continued from page 1)
lignment purposes. In 2016, Howe turned in 329 students which was 10 over the cutoff number and placed them in Class 3A-Division I. The number of students makes a very big impact on competition and being the one of the smallest Division I schools has seen them go 16-47 since 2016. Nine of those wins came in 2016 during arguably Howe’s fin-est team in school history. Taking away that season, Howe has gone 7-44 since 2017 including a 22-game losing streak. With the recent resignation of Head Coach Bill Jehling, the announcement of moving down will have a heavy impact of applicants to be the next head coach. That, coupled with the fact that Howe’s all-time leading passer Austin Ha-ley will return with four of five offensive linemen, starting run-ning back, and two of his four favorite receivers. Even while facing excruciating competition, the Dogs finished as the school’s 9th all-time offense
in yardage during Zac Cater’s first year as offensive coordinator. The move down to Howe breathes life into the town again. It allows for a sense of community pride again as the odds of winning increase dramatically. There’s a magic in the air during the late fall when the weather gets chilly, and discussions of playoffs are held. The pictures taken by a lit up victory light bring a sense of pride to the community. No longer can you buy your groceries at Albertsons and only see Gunter Tigers shirts, Pottsboro Cardinal shirts, etc. Perhaps, next year in late November, the black and white of the Howe Bulldogs will be worn again with pride. Howe needs that. Howe ISD has to get it right with the next head coach. The whole town is riding on it. If Wednesday was an indication of things to come—the Howe Bulldogs will have at least a two-year window to compete at a high level again on Friday nights.
XYZ Enjoyed Musical Program First Baptist Church’s XYZ (Xtra Years of Zest) group was entertained with an enjoyable musical program in December. Our own Beverly Starcher played the harmonica, the guitar, and the hammer dulcimer as she not only shared her performance abilities, but also led the group in Christmas songs. Her intermittent testimony encouraged everyone to try something new no matter what age we may be. She started playing the harmonica at 70, but has been playing the dulcimer for 40 years. Howe’s own Ray McCarthy also
presented an upbeat program of Christmas songs with his keyboard and his own delightful style of singing, highlighted by “Mary , Did You Know?” Quite a talent was displayed. XYZ members appreciate people who are willing to share their talents, information, presentations, and/or testimonies when asked to be guest programs. Following the short business meeting and enjoyable program, pot luck lunch was enjoyed by all.
