Non-football realignment format works better for Howe

Howe sports not named football will not change a whole lot as far as district mates are concerned. The biggest change in the entrance of Gunter and Pottsboro and the exit of Van Alstyne who moved up to Class 4A. While Howe has a severe enrollment disadvantage in football’s new District 5-3A-1,

that’s not the case for the new District 10-3A for other sports. Howe’s 356 enrollment is thirdhighest in the district behind Pottsboro (426) and Bonham (499). Along with those two schools, Howe will join Leonard, Blue Ridge, Whitewright, Bells, and Gunter.

The Howe Lady Bulldogs moved to 24-6 on the season and 10-1 in district play on Friday night with a 66-28 win over Leonard. It might have been senior night, but no one informed junior Sierra Copeland of that as she dominated the game with unbelievable numbers of 22 points and 18 rebounds. The 6’2” junior shot 9-for-16 from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Eight of her rebounds were on the offensive glass. Howe again was unchallenged in the first period rolling out to a 235 lead after the first period. Leonard took the second period, but Howe finished the first half with a 29-15 lead. The Lady Bulldogs won the third period, 14 -8 and finished the game with the

same score as the first with a 23-5 final period. Behind Copeland in points was Cassidy Anderson as she tied a season-high with 18 points. Jenna Honore tallied 12 to round out the Howe girls in double digits. Other scorers were Ally Harvey (6), Molly Wilson (3), Landery Sanders (3), and Trinity Williams (2). Harvey also pulled down 15 rebounds in the win. Howe is tied with Bells for the district championship and the two teams have decided to flip a coin to determine the winner instead of playing a run-off game. Howe’s final district game will be at Bonham on Tuesday and will be broadcast live at howeeenterprise.com and on YouTube.com.
