County Commissioner debate in Howe Thursday

February 10 is celebrated annually as Umbrella Day. That’s ironic. Umbrella Day is in honor of one of the world's most invaluable inventions. On a rainy day, we are sure glad that someone was smart enough to invent it. The President of the United States is coming off one of the most successful weeks of his term. And he let everyone know about it. The football was spiked in the endzone and the celebration made Butch Johnson blush. To the right is a picture of three guys that are always willing to help with any project for the good of the community and especially kids. Brad Murphy, Kent Lowder, and Sergio Garcia spent several of their Saturday hours improving the ballfields on Highway 75 to help the image of our city. Not pictured is Kelly Grant and her sons, and a few other sons that helped with the work. A huge thank you also goes to the City of Howe for providing the materials to make the fields look so much better. It’s amazing what a little touch can do for the pride of a town. On Thursday in downtown Howe, the Howe Area Chamber Commerce will host a debate between current County Commissioner, Precinct 1 Jeff Whitmire and his challenger Jeremy Roberts. Whitmire was originally elected in 2013 and was reelected in 2016 against

opponent Scott Renfro who now endorses him. Whitmire’s platform is of fiscal conservatism. His challenger Jeremy Roberts, owner of 903 Brewers, says he wants to keep taxes low, government out of the way, and prepare for growth.

All fans and coaches of Texas High School football had their eyes turned to the UIL website Monday morning as they released their latest redistricting schedule at 9 am that morning. In Howe, a giant thud could be heard which was the collective jawdropping of the community as they read that the Bulldogs, one of the smallest 3A-1 schools in Texas, was placed in an 8team district. But wait, there’s more! Not only will it be mathematically very tough to make the playoffs in an 8-team district, but the teams within that district were some East Texas powerhouse programs with state championships and semi-final title trophies that still show undried Brasso in the gold laces. Mineola, now in 5-3A, recently won the state championship in 3A-I in 2016 as they defeated

Howe 21-7 in the third round en route to their title. They were in the state title game in 2014 but lost to Cameron Yoe that year. Since the state championship year, they have Mineola 1995 graduate Luke Blackwell at the helm who has gone 1615 in three seasons. Mineola is 16-15 since their state championship in 2016. The Bulldogs are 0-1 vs. Mineola all-time. Mineola has 128 more students in high school than Howe.

The most colorful district opponent will be Mount Vernon who is led by Art Briles, former Head Coach at Baylor after a long successful high school career where he made a name for himself while at Stephenville from 19881999. He left Stephenville to became the running back’s coach at Texas Tech (Continued on page 5)
