Veterans honored by HHS National Honor Society
The recent craze on social media is the lady yelling and the cat yelling a correction back. One of these took on a new life last week when the lady yelled “Hann-ing” and the cat yelled “Hain-ing.” By the time the discussion was over, no one still knows the correct pronunciation of the main street in Howe—not even family members. Jabez Haning, founder of Howe, reportedly couldn’t read or write. This led to further confusion as one old Howe map states land as “Haining”. To jumble things up a little more, the Haning family had the spelling of the name accidentally changed to Hanning due to a military error on a card. One would think that when they drew the map and used the name “Haining” it could be because they spelled it as it was pronounced by the man who couldn’t read or write. But at this point, no one really knows. From a grammatical standpoint, the word would be pronounced “Hain-ing” just as the difference between caning and canning or hoping and hopping. The Howe High School National Honor Society held their annual Veterans Day Assembly last Monday at the HHS Gymnasium. Once again, veterans were welcomed and honored in front of the entire student body of Howe ISD. The guest speaker was Howe ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Bill Jehling who gave a riveting speech. “Veterans Day is often times confused with Memorial Day,” said Jehling to the packed gym. “Memorial Day is a day of remembrances for all those that have died in defense of our country. Veterans Day celebrates all that have worn the uniform of the United States Military. It is a national holiday marked by celebrations and observances like the one we are holding here today.”

Jehling’s full speech (below) laid out the only way of becoming a veteran which is to have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard. “Every man and woman that joins the military swears an oath to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic,” said Jehling. “If you ever watch a Presidential Inauguration, our Commander in Chief of the Military, our President takes this same oath. Winter clothes needed at Peggy’s Porch
Volunteers at Peggy’s Porch are calling out for winter clothing as there has been a run on clothes recently. The building was once packed and overstocked with clothing but now is running low. Peggy’s Porch is located behind City Hall in Downtown Howe and provides free clothing for those in need. It is open each Saturday morning from 9 am—11 am.
