Freedom to chains

Interurban Alley hosting luncheon tomorrow

by Paul Harvey

“If America ever gets whacked; it will be from the inside.” ~ Paul Harvey/1965 ~ Now then, what makes a nation strong? Taxes? (Heh) There’s nothing new about those either, the first income tax was paid by Abraham. It was written on a rock by the hand of Divinity and handed to Moses at the top of Mount Sinai (and you might want to remember this) it was at the flat rate of 10 percent. It promised the wrath of God on anybody who tampered with or violated that law. Christ was born in Bethlehem because Joseph was on his way to pay his taxes. Joseph was a relatively well-to-do landowner of the house and lineage of David. Yet the taxes exacted by Caesar Augustus were so exorbitant that he didn’t have enough money left over to employ a trusted messenger for the mission so, though his wife was great with child, he made the journey himself. And Christ was born in Bethlehem because Joseph was on his way to pay his taxes. And Christ was born in a manger because there was a housing shortage when he got there. Our problems are not new.

Members of the Howe, Van Alstyne, Anna, and Melissa Chambers of Commerce will gather tomorrow, March 19, for the quarterly multi-chamber luncheon to be held at Hurricane Creek Country Club from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.

With an innocent sounding Constitutional Amendment, the Sixteenth, which says that “Congress shall have the power to lay and collect taxes on incomes from whatever source derived” and we forgot to put any limit to the extent to which we could tax ourselves. Conceivably we could be taxed out of all private property. We could be taxed not 70 percent, 80 percent, 90 percent but At Runnymede the Magna Carta at 100 percent. We could be was handed to King John on the end awakened one morning and find of a sword denying to royalty the the government owns the farm, right of unlimited taxation. Yet, you know it was for us, the American page 16

The speaker for the event will be Anna ISD Police Chief George White. He was sworn in as Anna ISD's first police chief of the school district in 2017 after serving as the school's director of security when he joined in October 2016. The meeting was originally scheduled to be held at Howe's Summit Gardens but the renovation process is still a

underway. Therefore, the meeting was moved to its normal location of Hurricane Creek. Those interested in joining either or all of the local chamber of commerce organizations can do so at the meeting. There is time allowed for business representatives to give a short 30-second introduction of their own business. The meeting will begin with an introduction from Howe Chamber representative Monte Walker followed by Bill Jones of the Melissa Chamber. Kevin Hall of the Anna Chamber will introduce the speaker while Vicky Guess of Van Alstyne's Chamber will close out the luncheon will announcements.
