Great American Clean-Up Keep Howe Beautiful will host a trash clean-up event on Saturday, March 23 starting a 9:00 am. The green group will meet at the Economic Development Building (101 E. Haning St.) in downtown Howe.

They are inviting everyone to help. They are requesting volunteers to please wear appropriate shoes, gloves, and grabbers if you have them. KHB will also have some supplies available in the office. Please help Keep Howe Beautiful.

The First United Methodist Church will have their Easter Egg Hunt at their church this year instead of the high school.

Being in the "newspaper" business for the last five years has been interesting.

Before this venture, I would watch every Texas Rangers game and attend many of them in person. But unless they start playing in Howe, it just ain't happening.

Thankfully they're not very good, so I don't feel so bad.

But I know that after five years of being overloaded by everything-Howe, I know what I knew -that this is a fantastic place to live and raise a family. Have we always got everything right?

Heck no, but we truly do try. And we hurt when we get it wrong. People here are understanding for the most part. Thanks for sifting through five years of typos.

The publication is now pretty well established and I can tell you that it was all a blessing. None of it would have been possible without some people in our community that helped me and saw me through those gruesome first few dozen editions and have been loyal customers from the beginning and we’ve now watched each other’s businesses grow. So a huge 5-year thank you to Cavender Home Theater, Sonic of Howe, Baker AC/Heating, Scoggins Funeral Home, Loretta Anderson, Howe Family Dentistry, Abby’s, Southwest Auction, Independent Bank, El Patio, Micah Belden, and GCEC. Other early advertisers such as The School Zone really helped launch this thing and they are the reason Howe gets to have their kids covered. Please consider them and all of our advertisers for your local business.

Becoming the president of Keep Howe Beautiful, it brought up conversations about the old First Christian Church which is owned by the city and was in shambles. We as a board toured the inside of the building with Mayor Jeff Stanley and being a lover of hometown history, it was really exciting to see some of the things in there. The building was once going to be a museum with work done by Jean Norman and her Howe Historical Society. Many historical items were still in the building, but the items were being threatened due to conditions inside the old church. To my surprise were boxes full of Howe Enterprise newspapers and many copies of the Howe Messenger newspapers. And the fact that it was a full set of my grandfather’s publication, it was suddenly worth unknown amounts to me. My “papaw” Bob Walker I also need to thank Michelle owned and operated the Enterprise Carney, Keri Harvey, Loretta, and from 1966 to 1974. N.D. Suddenly it dawned on me that I could take my advertising background in radio and my love of hometown and use those passions to better my community and make a living for my family doing something I love. In the beginning, I was going to restart the Howe Enterprise as a social media news publication. It was not intended to be a website with a PDF form. At no point did I ever want to print a publication due to its expense and dying market.

With that boost of confidence, I told my wife that I was going to give it a shot and if it didn’t work, I’d go back to the normal workforce. So without any experience in the news business, and literally searching the internet of “how to make a newspaper”, I was off and rolling with Volume 1, Edition 1.

With the means of Facebook, the word got out quickly and I remember Michelle Carney sharing the Howe Enterprise news page with hundreds of people. It was very quickly “liked” by a thousand I approached my wife about the idea which was met with quite a bit people on Facebook. HOWE, Texas – A Howe patrol vehicle was damaged by a hit-andrun driver Sunday morning on northbound U.S. Highway 75 in Van Alstyne.

Howe Police Officer David Morris was assisting the Van Alstyne Police Department with a multivehicle accident south of Van Alstyne Parkway shortly after midnight when the driver of a white GMC pick-up struck Officer Morris’ marked patrol vehicle and continued north without stopping.

Officer Morris’ patrol unit was blocking the left lane of the highway with all of its emergency overhead lights flashing. VAPD Officer Nathan Wilson was able to catch up with and stop the GMC.

The hit-and-run driver, 50-year-old James Wyrick of Burleson, Texas, failed a sobriety test and was arrested. Wyrick was booked into the Grayson County Jail for Driving While intoxicated with an open container, deadly conduct and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Additional charges may be filed after further investigation.

No one was injured in the incident and the Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash involving the Howe PD vehicle which had to be towed from the scene. The Howe and Van Alstyne Police Departments are working together on the charges against Wyrick.

On Sunday, she paired with her teammates for two races and finished as national champions in the 4×800 meter relay with a time of 9:41.89 which set a new Hershey Championship Record.

Agee also has been a member of the varsity Lady Bulldogs basketball team for the past two seasons.

Howe PD searching for information regarding motorcyclist’s death HOWE, Texas – The Howe Police Department is seeking the public’s help with information regarding a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on southbound U.S. Highway 75 near Exit 52 (West Farmington Road) in Howe on Saturday, March 9.

Benny Watkins, 76, of Farmersville, was riding his black 2004 three-wheeled Harley Davidson motorcycle on U.S. Highway 75 at around 7:30 p.m. in southern Howe when he struck a mattress laying in the roadway. Watkins, a Vietnam veteran, was transported via helicopter to a Dallas area hospital with severe head trauma. He succumbed to his injuries on March 14.

According to witnesses, a mattress fell from the back of a

pickup which continued south on the highway.

(Heh) There’s nothing new about those either, the first income tax was paid by Abraham. It was written on a rock by the hand of Divinity and handed to Moses at the top of Mount Sinai (and you might want to remember this) it was at the flat rate of 10 percent. It promised the wrath of God on anybody who tampered with or violated that law. Christ was born in Bethlehem because Joseph was on his way to pay his taxes. Joseph was a relatively well-to-do landowner of the house and lineage of David. Yet the taxes exacted by Caesar Augustus were so exorbitant that he didn’t have enough money left over to employ a trusted messenger for the mission so, though his wife was great with child, he made the journey himself.

And Christ was born in Bethlehem because Joseph was on his way to pay his taxes. And Christ was born in a manger because there was a housing shortage when he got there.

Our problems are not new.

The speaker for the event will be Anna ISD Police Chief George White. He was sworn in as Anna ISD's first police chief of the school district in 2017 after serving as the school's director of security when he joined in October 2016.

The meeting was originally scheduled to be held at Howe's Summit Gardens but the renovation process is still a

underway. Therefore, the meeting was moved to its normal location of Hurricane Creek.

Those interested in joining either or all of the local chamber of commerce organizations can do so at the meeting. There is time allowed for business representatives to give a short 30-second introduction of their own business.

The meeting will begin with an introduction from Howe Chamber representative Monte Walker followed by Bill Jones of the Melissa Chamber. Kevin Hall of the Anna Chamber will introduce the speaker while Vicky Guess of Van Alstyne's Chamber will close out the luncheon will announcements.

A 3-run third inning did Howe in on Friday night as Van Alstyne took a 5-3 win over Howe (4-9). The inning began positively for Howe with Mason Riggs striking out the first hitter. But back-to-back free passes set up an RBI single. That was followed by a hit-by-pitch and a catcher's interference by Dyson Dillard. The following batter walked with the bases loaded before Riggs got a grounder to end the inning.

Cassidy Anderson threw 23 first inning pitches and walked one batter, allowed ten runs on nine hits.

Freshman Trinity Williams entered the game and went two innings, allowing no earned runs three hits and two walks. Errors led to five runs in the game's final two innings.

There’s more to a house than curb appeal A friend of mine called the other day and was really excited about a new idea he had about flipping houses. My wife and I watch programs about Dr. Billy renovating Holland properties and we enjoy seeing the creative ideas and amazing results. I told my friend I thought this was a great adventure and that I’m sure it will be a success since he is skilled in the area of construction work. I became even more enthused when he went on to tell me that quitting his job and going into a new profession was not the only thing that was going on in his life. He also has a desire to rededicate his life to God and allow the Lord to do some serious spiritual remodeling within his heart. This vision of making a major change is refreshing to say the least and I’m always encouraged to hear about individuals who step out in faith and have a passion to improve their life and fulfill their destiny. No matter who you are or what you’ve been through, God is inviting you today to be spiritually redeemed and transformed by the grace and love of Jesus Christ.

Whether remodeling a house or our life, it’s going to take a lot of determination and hard work.

Generic versus brand name: Is there really a difference?

Hey Taylor - Working on my grocery budget and wondering about those store brands - the products named after/specific to the grocery store where I’m Taylor Kovar shopping.

Those are always cheaper, but is that because the product is bad? - August Hey August - That’s the thing about good prices, we tend to question them and wonder what the catch is. In my experience, those generic brands have all the same qualities as bigger brands.

Here’s a quick summary of how those products work and why you shouldn’t be afraid.

Price is lowered by lack of marketing. When you pay for a bag of Lays or some Newman’s Own dressing, you pay for national marketing expenses. The brands that have become household names have commercial and print ads which cost a lot of money, and those prices are typically covered by the consumer. If a large corporation can run national commercials and have its product carried by all major retailers, familiarity will inspire people to pay the extra dollar to buy the potato chips they’ve heard of before. Meanwhile, the store brand doesn’t have to advertise because you’re already going to that store.

The other products are paying to motivate shoppers through commercials, so a store can cut marketing costs and pass those savings on to consumers like you and me. The product is just as good, and the need to cover marketing expenses is gone.

you spend too much time weighing the pros and cons of every product, your willpower slowly evaporates and you increase the chances of settling for the most expenses option.

Instead, accept that the store brand is a less-famous version of the available options and grab it off the shelf without a second thought.

The ingredients are there to be seen. Can’t decide which brand of refried beans to buy? Read the ingredients on the back. Most of the time I find that the generic brand uses the same essential ingredients as everyone else.

Some of the healthier, organic companies might have a different recipe, and you have to decide what’s most important to you.

Instead of wondering whether or not the store brand is cheap because of what’s in it, just have a look at the back of the label and see for yourself. If you can get the exact same ingredients at half the price, that sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

There’s no need to be afraid of generic groceries. It’s always worth doing a little comparison, but you don’t have to be afraid of getting swindled. Enjoy your meals, August!

A fitting tribute It has been fifty years since SGT Jimmy Burchfield, from Whitewright Texas, gave his life in Vietnam, but even after all these years, our memories of him are still fresh. His determination, courage and the love of country linger in our minds. He strived for education and always dedicated himself to the goal of being the very best he could. He studied hard for his grades and labored hard for his tuition. The day he graduated from college was only one of the highlights of his short life.

Quickly after college, he was drafted into the Army to serve in Vietnam. There were many things he could have done, but he took his obligation to serve his country proudly. His journey to Vietnam began on March 2, 1969. The letters he sent home showed concern for all of his family and friends. He didn’t want anyone to worry about him. After reaching his final destination, he wrote his last letter on March 18, 1969, stating that he had finally gotten to his company. He said it was like one big family where everyone looked out for each other because it was the only way they could survive. Knowing that he was going on his first mission the next day he said, “I’ll probably find out tomorrow what it’s all about.

On March 23, 1969, a Western Union telegram was sent to his parents from the Secretary of the Army that said with regret Jimmy had been missing in action in Vietnam since March 20. The news received was he was killed on March 20, 1969, near the village of Duc Tan. It stated that at 12:30 PM, Jimmy received fatal fragment wounds when his unit’s position came under intense mortar attack. Ten minutes into the first battle of his first war, his young life ended on Asian ground. He died in the performance of duty.

Jimmy was awarded several posthumous medals that included the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Good Conduct Medal. Jimmy stands in the unbroken line of men who have given their lives so that our nation’s goal of freedom and peace is maintained.

The following article was written in the local newspaper following his death. “A fitting scholarship in honor of a worthy individual is being set up in Whitewright. This scholarship is to be called the Jimmy Burchfield Memorial Award and will be presented to an outstanding graduating senior from Whitewright High School whose work and attitude best exemplify Sgt. Burchfield. We hope the goal is achieved and the memory of this fine, young warrior who fought for an education only to give his life for his country - is perpetuated by those who follow the pattern he set.” The scholarship fund set up in memory of Jimmy has been given to a graduating senior since 1969.

His name as written on the Vietnam Memorial wall represents a flesh-and-blood human who had plans and dreams that went far beyond dying in a jungle. He was a son, brother, uncle and friend whose death left an unfillable hole, like a piece of their own life went missing, decades ago, and never came back. To be remembered, it’s not too much to ask on this 50th anniversary of his ultimate sacrifice. His name, as it is written on the wall will always be written on our hearts.
