Learn about antiques and collectibles with Georgia Caraway or a pattern that complimented the overall design. The knitted body was attached to a silk section known as the header. Ribbon, cord and occasionally chain was drawn through small rings, which became the handle and closure of the reticule. Some type of bag has been used since the earliest times to carry money, keys, and other personal articles. In the Middle Ages, purses, pouches, or bags were usually attached to the belt or girdle. In 16th, 17th, and 18th Century Europe, because the dress was bulky, there was no great need for a bag because many pockets could be sewn into the garment. Bags and purses began to appear sometime after 1780 in Europe. Reticules, or small net, silk, velvet, or satin bags were attached to a lady’s belt or waistband with a brooch. Almost all of these bags were beaded. Reticules made in the early 1800s were constructed with three definite horizontal sections of beading. The bottom section was often beaded in a star pattern, the middle section consisted of floral or scenic motif, and the top section was either a scalloped border, a floral border, a sawtooth edge
By the early 20th century, beaded bags were framed with gold, sterling, German silver, tortoiseshell, amber, ivory, ormolu or celluloid. Bags can give a few clues for approximate dating of particular examples. Beaded bags with 3 sections can be dated to the early 19th C; bags with geometric patterns, attached to celluloid frames, from the early 20th C; swag or shaggy bead designs in the drawstring reticule style were popular in the 1920s; bags with free flowing lines from the Art Nouveau period (1890-1920); peacocks, silhouettes, Egyptian, or Oriental motifs from the early 20th C. Dr. Georgia Caraway, former director of the Denton County Museums for 14 years, and her friends opened the Howe Mercantile on April 25.
