WINNING SPINS

WITHTHE ADVENT OF BEBOP IN the mid-20th century, the parameters of vocal jazz grew exponentially. Scat singing, the voicing of nonsense syllables as notes pioneered by Louis Armstrong in the 1920s, gained new sophistication and virtuosity in the post-WWII years. Concurrently, Eddie Jefferson and King Pleasure, soon followed by Jon Hendricks, developed vocalese, setting lyrics to improvised jazz solos. Two new releases respectively pay tribute to that expansion on the one hand, and point toward the further development of jazz vocal horizons on the other.

The Royal Bopsters: 10th Anniversary Edition (Motéma), is a re-release of a recording initiated in 2013 by the title quartet, Amy London, Holli Ross, Darmon Meader and Dylan Pramuk. Spearheaded by Amy, they conceived of a project celebrating some of the masters of modern jazz vocals, scat and vocalese as guests. Particularly resonant now is “Music Is Forever,” a Russ Freeman melody with lyrics by Annie Ross, who sings them as one of those guests. The lyrics invoke the names of a litany of deceased jazz greats, asserting that [you] “still live when we listen to you.” The sentiment is poignant, as Ross and all the honored guests on the album except Sheila Jordan have now passed away.

Amy, the de facto leader of The Royal Bopsters, was inspired to create the album when she connected with Mark Murphy, who was living near her in a convalescent home in New Jersey. Mark, one of the great jazz icons, scat singers and vocalese composers, appears on five of the 14 tracks. Besides Mark, Sheila and Annie, vocal legends Jon Hendricks, featured on some of his own classic vocalese renderings, and Bob Dorough are also heard.

Mark is showcased to good advantage, singing his vocalese lyrics, scatting and, on “Bird Chasin’ (Chasin’ the Bird),” reading a passage from Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. The Royal Bopsters fill out the recording with their own vocalese versions of bop tunes, notably from unjustly forgotten composer-musician Gigi Gryce, as well as an “Invitation” that reflects the stamp of mid-20th century quartets like the HiLo’s and Four Freshman. This 10th Anniversary Edition also includes two new tracks: “Jazz Jump,” a King Pleasure

vocalese to a Lester Young tune, and an a cappella “Auld Lang Syne.”

Alive at the Village Vanguard, Fred Hersch & esperanza spalding (Palmetto), strongly suggests where the future of jazz vocal innovation is headed. This duo recording from 2018 pairs pianist Fred with vocalist esperanza (she has shed capital letters in her name), who does not play her usual first instrument, the bass. The two interact like members of an improv troupe, Fred creating scenarios with his piano, esperanza riffing on songs or fashioning exotic variations on scat singing, avoiding tropes.

As much a skeptic as a singer of the lyrics, esperanza turns the opening track, the Gershwins’ “But Not For Me,” into an interrogation of the archaic lyrics. She fails to understand words like “hi ho, alas, and lackaday,” and tells the audience (she often breaks that third wall to directly address them) “love songs I hear on the radio are not for me,” echoing the song. She is even more overtly antagonistic to the lyrics on “Girl Talk,” the embarrassingly misogynistic Neal Hefti-Bobby Troup tune. She abandons singing it to question its premise. “There’s something in this song that only a select 51 percent group can understand,” she tells the public. She continues: “At the end of the day, girl talk has a deeper meaning…after girl talk try and talk to me.”

But it is the way that esperanza expands the range of scat that shows how this album points to a broader future for jazz singing. Her scatting on Charlie Parker’s “Little Suede Shoes” is vibrant and embraces the calypso feel of the original. And her vocal on Egberto Gismonti’s “Loro,” also enlivened by a romping piano solo, is a unique breakthrough combining scatting, yodeling and evocations of bird song.

On this album, Fred reveals more of the influence of Thelonious Monk on his piano playing than before, especially on his “Dream of Monk” and Monk’s “Evidence,” the latter also gleaming from esperanza’s singular scatting.

The Royal Bopsters appear at Swing 46 on Jan. 14. Fred Hersch and esperanza spalding return to the Village Vanguard on Jan. 10-15 and are at NJPAC on Jan. 29.

JOE LOVANO: 70 Years of Jazz Expressions

and I have been exploring ways of communicating together through music and life partnership since 1981,” Joe fondly recalls. “She’s been a part of some key recordings of mine, [including] Rush Hour and Universal Language. Judy is an inspiration because she comes from so many places in the world of music, from being a modern dancer as well as vocal stylist.

FOR FOUR DECADES, THE

GRAMmy Award-winning, Cleveland-born saxophonist Joe Lovano has been the most ubiquitous saxophonist on the scene. He has performed and recorded in many musical genres, from straight-ahead, postbop and the avant garde to opera, world and third stream music, and in multiple settings including duo, trio, quartet, big band and orchestra. He’s also worked with a number of jazz superstars including Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock and esperanza spalding, to name a very select few.

“I'm really proud of the fact that I was able to establish myself as a leader, and share that blessing with all kinds of folks through my 25 records on Blue Note from 1991 until 2015,” Joe states, “and now, I'm recording for ECM, with one of my working bands with pianist Marilyn Crispell, and drummer Carmen Castaldi.”

Born on December 29, 1952, Joe celebrates his 70th birthday with an engagement at Birdland in January entitled Streams of Expression. “I’d like to look at it as a celebration of life and music,” Joe modestly says, “and [my] 70th birthday is just a commemoration of that … It's been a lifetime of streams of expression for me.”

Joe titled his Birdland engagement after his 2006 album. He’s supported on the gig with a nine-piece ensemble featuring alto saxophonist Steve Slagle, trumpeter Barry Ries, and a rhythm section with pianist James Weidman, bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Otis Brown III. They plan to perform “Moon Dreams,” “Boplicity” and “Move” from Gunther Schuller’s “Birth of the Cool Suite,” based on Miles Davis’ historic 1948-50 recordings. The group is also going to play compositions from Joe’s two nonet offerings, On This Day at the Vanguard and 52nd Street Themes. “Relationships are everything,” Joe declares, “and my Streams of Expression band is really a family band. [Some] members go back with me to the 70s. We've been playing together in all kinds of settings.”

Joe’s musical aesthetic was shaped by his relationships with two special people, vocalist Judi Silvano and his father, tenor saxophonist Tony “Big T” Lovano. “Judi

“My dad was a major force in the Cleveland jazz scene,” Joe proudly relates. “He was born in 1925, and grew up in that swing, bebop and modern jazz generation. He heard Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Lester Young. He had a real passion for John Coltrane, and played in a jam session with him in the early 50s. He had a lot of records, so I grew up with a great education in the history of recorded music. That library taught me everything. And then as a teenager, I'm standing toe to toe with him in our lessons playing together, trying to match his tone and his power. And I was able to go and sit in with his groups, at 15 and 16 years old, playing with some beautiful musicians of his generation, who were my mentors and teachers.”

Joe plays the entire jazz saxophone tradition from Ben Webster’s muscular, heart-on-his-sleeve tenor tones and John Coltrane’s gravity defying sheets of sound, to Ornette Coleman’s asymmetrical blues connotations. He also plays two unique horns. The aulochrome is a double soprano saxophone with two mouthpieces, created by Belgium inventor François Louis, and patented in 1999; and the tarogato is a Hungarian double-reed, woodwind instrucontinued on page 23

MIMI JONES

ROOM 623 / SUNDAYS IN JANUARY

Mimi Jones is a bassist, vocalist, producer, filmmaker and label owner. Growing up in the Bronx, she listened to all types of music and originally studied classical guitar. Proficient at percussion, songwriting, voice, drums and dance, she was accepted to the LaGuardia High School of Music and Art where she took up the bass. Her earliest bass teacher was the great Milt Hinton. He prepared her to enter Manhattan School of Music. There Mimi studied with Linda McKnight, Lisle Atkinson, Barry Harris and many others before launching a successful career. Since then, she has worked with top musicians such as Kenny Barron, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves and Ravi Coltrane. She hosts her long-running The Lab Session: Jam and Jazz Party in Harlem. DJS

CHARLIE APICELLA

IL PORTO / FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS IN JANUARY

Guitarist Charlie Apicella beautifully draws on the straight-ahead jazz tradition, bringing a fresh, clean sound to classic music. And critics and audiences are applauding his work. He was voted onto two recent DownBeat Readers Polls. Well-schooled, his teachers included Yusef Lateef, Pat Martino and Dave Stryker. Matthew Kassel praised Charlie in DownBeat magazine as “a deeply melodic guitarist along the lines of Grant Green.” Additionally, the influence of 60s jazz shines through whether he is leading his own group or performing or recording with greats such as Dave Holland, Don Braden or Sonny Fortune. Iron City, his trio with Brad Whiteley and drummer Austin Walker, performs weekly at Il Porto and at Jazz in Main on Jan. 5. DJS

KRISTINA KOLLER

THE PORCH / JANUARY 1; CHELSEA TABLE + STAGE / JANUARY 15

Vocalist Kristina Koller continues to evolve in her approach to jazz singing and finds innovative ways to blend R & B, Indie Rock, funk and traditional swing into her style. She grew up listening to all types of music, performed in musical theatre, and sang in an alt-rock band. Her formal education took her to The Hartt School Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz and then to City College, and she has performed at top New York venues such as Smalls, Smoke, Minton’s, Mezzrow and The Apollo Theater. DownBeat called her a “wonderfully eclectic singer.” For the “Cole Porter Revisited” show at Chelsea Table + Stage, based on her 2023 album Get Out of Town, her band includes regulars Fima Chupakhin on piano, James Robbins on bass, plus Cory Cox on drums. She also performs at The Porch with Fima, James and drummer Joe Abba. DJS

NAAMA GHEBER

1803 NYC / JANUARY 3, 17, 31

Israeli singer Naama Gheber came to New York’s New School on a scholarship to the Jazz Program eight years ago. The now 30-something Naama became infatuated with the classic American Songbook of the first half of the 20th century while pursuing a jazz education in Israel, and she has continued to mine that vein of standards in Big Apple area clubs and on her first two albums. The singer takes varied approaches to those standards, from a resolutely swinging “S’Wonderful” to interpretations reflecting Blossom Dearie’s coyness, to radical transformations like her molasses-slow version of “Get Out of Town.” On her new album, If I Knew Then, she even channels Sheila Jordan in a voice and bass version of Sy Oliver’s “Dream of You.” Besides 1803 NYC, Naama appears at Jazz on Main on Jan. 14, and Mezzrow on Jan. 15. GK

MARC COPLAND

MEZZROW / JANUARY 6-7

The Philadelphia-born pianist Marc Copland has an astonishing ability to bring audiences together. With his innovative approach to harmony and rhythm, Marc’s style is all his own. Marc moved to New York City in the late 1960s. After a time in the Baltimore-Washington area, he moved back to New York and began performing with Joe Lovano and Herbie Mann, to name two. Marc’s latest release is 2022’s Someday, which features saxophonist Robin Verheyen, bassist Drew Gress, and drummer Mark Ferber. In his review of Someday for All About Jazz, critic Dan McClenaghan stated, “Music is magic in this group’s hands, and Marc Copland is the master magician.” For his performances at Mezzrow, Marc is joined by Drew and drummer Billy Drummond for a rare New York City appearance not to be missed. JOHN PATITUCCI

JAZZ ON MAIN / JANUARY 7

While most known as a jazz musician, bassist John Patitucci’s talents cross genres. Whether supporting jazz luminaries such as Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter or cultural icons like B.B. King and Queen Latifah, John has continued to surprise and excite audiences with his impeccable style. Since the release of his self-titled debut album as a leader in 1987, John has demonstrated that the bass is not only a supporting character but also plays the lead on the jazz stage. On September 16, 2022, John released the album Live in Italy, which features him with saxophonist Chris Potter and drummer Brian Blade. At Jazz on Main, John is accompanied by guitarist Yotam Silberstein and drummer/percussionist Rogerio Boccato for a night of Brazilian trio music that simply cannot be missed. EW

JACK WILKINS

ZINC / JANUARY 9

Performing as a sideman or leading his own group, Jack Wilkins cuts right through with his impeccable tone. He began to play the guitar at age 13 and cut his teeth alongside luminaries such as Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan and Buddy Rich. Since the release of his debut album Windows in 1973, Jack has displayed a melodic temperament that is pure and polished. In addition to his performance schedule, he keeps busy as an educator with academic appointments at The New School and Manhattan School of Music. Jazz has produced many a guitarist but none as understated and refined as Jack Wilkins. For his performance at Zinc, he is joined by guitarist Jeff Barone, bassist Sean Smith, and drummer Steve Fidyk. EW

NICHOLAS PAYTON

SMOKE JAZZ CLUB / JANUARY 12-15

Celebrated for his clarion sound and reverberant tone, trumpeter Nicholas Payton is best known for his work in the modern jazz mainstream and his mastery of hard bop, swing and the singular music of his hometown, New Orleans. Nicholas expands his horizons on his latest recording, The Couch Sessions, (Smoke Sessions Records), which is the focus of this album release gig. Joined by veteran bassist Buster Williams and drummer Lenny White, Nicholas plays as much or more piano, Fender Rhodes and clavinet as he does trumpet. He does so while celebrating some of his heroes of Black American Music, including Geri Allen, Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter, Benny Golson and Herbie Hancock. Like his trumpet, Nicholas’ keyboards are resonant and indelible, even when he is simultaneously playing both. GK

JOEY ALEXANDER

JAZZ FORUM / JANUARY 13-14

Heralded as a child prodigy, pianist Joey Alexander was 9 when he won the Grand Prix at the Master-Jam Fest in Ukraine, and made his U.S. debut with Jazz at Lincoln Center soon after. His first album, My Favorite Things (Motéma), hit the Billboard 200, and he followed with five more, garnering three Grammy Award nominations. His latest record, Origin (Mack Avenue), released in May and featuring all originals, was praised by Chris Pearson in The Times of London as “deeply thoughtful music played with plenty of heart.” Although not yet 20, he has performed for Presidents Obama and Clinton, appeared at Carnegie Hall, The Apollo, and major festivals and clubs worldwide. Here as well as at Birdland on Jan. 15, he is joined by long-time collaborators, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Kendrick Scott. DJS

ALLISON MILLER

DIZZY’S CLUB / JANUARY 31–FEBRUARY 1

Drummer Allison Miller has been turning heads since bursting on the scene nearly 25 years ago. Modern Drummer praised her as “smart and swinging,” and The Wall Street Journal compared her to Art Blakey, Art Taylor and Max Roach. Her accomplishments are impressive. She was the first-place Rising Star Drummer in the DownBeat Critics Poll (2019), and a three-time Jazz Ambassador for the U.S. State Department. In addition to several of her own releases, she has recorded with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ani Difranco and Brandi Carlile. Her latest album is Glitter Wolf (Royal Potato Family), composed and arranged primarily by her, and her rhythms drive the music. For Dizzy’s Club, Allison’s group Boom Tic Boom includes Dayna Stephens on tenor sax, Myra Melford on piano, and Scott Colley on bass. DJS

SAMARA JOY:

A New Generation Draws on the Greats

father Antonio McLendon toured with gospel artist Andrae Crouch.

Growing up in the Bronx, she was surrounded by the music of her parents: gospel, soul, Motown and even some disco. While at Fordham High School for the Arts, she did sing with the school jazz band, but it wasn’t until she enrolled at SUNY Purchase that she fell in love with the genre.

Of course, she was influenced by greats like Ella and Sarah, but many other iconic singers had an impact on her.

“Carmen McRae has been the biggest inspiration to me,” says Samara. “I listen to her a lot because she had a wonderful way with lyrics. And I listen to Betty Carter for the same reasons. Both of these singers had such an innovative approach to a song.”

That’s probably why Samara also pays attention to arrangers. “I listen to how certain arrangers approach a song,” she continues. “People like Duke Pearson and Blue Mitchell come to mind. Arranging really interests me and I want to test my boundaries.”

VOCALIST SAMARA JOY MAY HAVE just graduated from college, but her singing belies her age. She has a richness and confidence that harkens back to an older generation and keeps her very busy.

“This past year has been a whirlwind,” she explains, “and I’ve been working nonstop. We’ve done three tours, not only in this country, but in Europe. And I just finished school.”

Samara studied in the SUNY Purchase Jazz Studies Program where she learned from teachers such as Jon Faddis, Kenny Washington and Pasquale Grasso. In fact, while a student she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition and recorded her debut album, Samara Joy (Whirlwind), which included a plethora of standards such as “Stardust,” “Everything Happens to Me,” and “It Only Happens Once.”

Her most recent offering, Linger Awhile (Verve), was released in September and cemented her reputation as a very talented jazz singer. Nominated for two Grammy Awards, Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album, it also appeared on The New York Times Best of the Year List.

It’s not bad for someone who didn’t grow up surrounded by jazz. She does, however, come from a very musical family. Her grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, performed with the Philadelphia gospel group The Savettes and her singer, songwriter and producer

Both her performances and her releases reflect the effects of such artists. Her recording of Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight” employs lyrics by Jon Hendricks that she found on a disc by Carmen McRae. And another Hendricks tune, “Social Call,” shows off Samara’s exploration of vocalese.

“At my shows in January, I plan to sing Carmen McRae and some Nancy Wilson such as ‘Guess Who I Saw Today?’ and ‘Linger Awhile,’ which was recorded by Sarah Vaughan,” she says. “And I will definitely sing one of my favorites ‘Sweet Pumpkin,’ a song arranged and recorded by Blue Mitchell.”

She is equally enthusiastic about the trio who plays with her. “This year I have started working with the pianist Luther Allison who hails from North Carolina,” Samara explains. “He is not only a terrific soloist, but also the perfect accompanist. On bass, I am using the wonderful Felix Moseholm who currently studies at Julliard. And on drums, I’m thrilled to work with Evan Sherman. I got to know him because I sing with his big band.”

It is reassuring to have so many young people playing jazz. Not only is Samara only in her early twenties and just beginning her career, but she is surrounding herself with great young players. She performs regularly and is looking forward to upcoming dates at the Blue Note and on the Jazz Cruise.

“I’m always exploring and trying new things, and audiences not only get to hear my take on jazz standards, but they also hear some of the new material I’m working on,” she continues. “I take my new career a little at a time. It’s all still a learning expecontinued on page 23

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW

Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

Jerry Wayne posted this on Facebook:

When I first moved to Florida, no one knew me, and I was open to take any gig that would pay me. Even those I knew would end up being a difficult crowd. One of those gigs was at Century Village, a senior community ranging in ages from 70 to deceased.

We were playing a favorite of the audience when a lady came up to me and said that we were playing the song too fast, and she could not dance to it that way. I asked her to turn around to see the huge dance floor packed with around 500 seniors dancing. I asked, “If it is too fast, why are they all dancing?” Her answer was the funniest I ever heard. “They’re all wrong.”

Herb Gardner sent this comparison to Sol Yaged, who idolized Benny Goodman:

In Boston we had Mel Dorfman, a fine jazz clarinet player, and also a uniquely strange character who worked in a bookstore, worshipped Benny Goodman and would send him a Christmas card every year. After several years with no responses, Mel finally gave it up. Around the following Easter he got a note in the mail: “Where’s my Christmas card? Benny Goodman.”

LOVANO....continued from page 13

Regardless of which horn he chooses, Joe’s goal is to, “play within the spontaneity of the forms” by “creating melodies within the melody, to create an inner music, in a spontaneous way, so you're free to react to what the drummer is playing, how the bass player is playing the harmonic rhythm, and how the pianist [creates] sounds and colors … to be free in music.”

For Joe, jazz begins at 70. “I'm scratching the surface and feeling the inspiration and the embrace of all the things that I've experienced, he proclaims. “They all fuel my ideas, and I always feel like I'm in a state of growing all the time.”

Joe Lovano’s Streams of Expression nonet performs at Birdland on Jan. 4-7.

rience.”

JOY...continued from page 17 ment that’s half clarinet and half saxophone.

Samara uses social media platforms to reach young audiences and it is working. She has thousands of followers, people she would never have reached by simply recording or performing. Not only does her singing span generations, her public does as well. And that bodes well for her future. She may sound like a throwback to the great jazz vocalists of the past, but she also represents the new generation of jazz. You don’t want to miss her.

Samara Joy appears at Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College on Jan. 15 with her trio consisting of pianist Luther Allison, bassist Felix Moseholm and drummer Evan Sherman. She is also part of a Verve showcase event at (Le) Poisson Rouge on Jan. 16

A Moment You Missed by Fran

Pianist Sullivan Fortner took the stage at The Jazz Gallery on Dec. 17, masked and wearing a ski hat, and it was pretty clear he wasn’t feeling well. “Good morning,” he greeted the sold out crowd, “for me it’s morning.” And well it might be, if you look at his world-wide travels over the past month. And he was coughing. However, the music! It seemed impossible that only two hands could create the remarkable music coming from the piano. Here’s my attempt to let you inside my head as I listened.
