WINNING SPINS
By George Kanzler
NEW ALBUMS BY FEMALE PERcussionists — a veteran drummer / leader now in her 50s and a rising mallets star still in her early 20s — are this month’s Spins. Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s latest just won the Grammy for Best Jazz Recording. Sasha Berliner has been voted a Rising Star on Vibes, the instrument she plays exclusively on her new release.
New Standards, Vol. 1, Terri Lyne Carrington (Candid), is a corollary to her 2022 book, New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers. It strives to bring more recognition to women jazz composers, and the record begins by presenting eleven pieces by women, played by Terri Lyne’s core quintet — Kris Davis, piano; Linda May Han Oh, bass; Nicholas Payton, trumpet; Matthew Stevens, guitar — plus a revolving cast of guest musicians and singers. The project aims to bring attention to under-appreciated women composers and to create new “standards,” so already familiar works are largely absent.
The one exception is the late Abbey Lincoln’s “Throw It Away,” a song that has been recorded by a number of jazz and cabaret singers. The arrangement here is suffused with African rhythmic elements from percussionist Nêgah Santos, and Lincoln’s lyrics are shared by singers Somi and Melanie Charles, who remind us anew why this is a deserved standard. Other vocal highlights of the program include Brazilian Eliane Elias’ “Moments,” sung with ethereal command by Dianne Reeves, over a bossa background enlivened by Ravi Coltrane’s tenor saxophone, and Carla Bley’s “Two Hearts (Lawns),” the lead sung in perfectly modulated tones by Samara Joy (who just won Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album). Singer Michael Mayo brings his clear tenor / baritone voice to Gretchen Parlato’s “Circling,” a ballad showcasing Julian Lage’s guitar; and Shadrack Oppong recites the poem in Shamie Royston’s composition “Uplifted Heart,” also with Ravi on tenor and Nicholas.
The other six tunes are instrumentals that range widely from dreamy ballads like “Ima” by Anat Cohen, featuring Julian’s and Matthew’s guitars, to the broken rhythms staccato of “Continental Cliff” by Patricia Perez, highlighted by the gnarly
fun of Kris’ piano turn. Three tracks are credibly enhanced by a wind ensemble of flugelhorn, flute, bass clarinet. Flutist Elena Pinderhughes (frequently) and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire (dueling on the final track, Marilyn Crispell’s “Rounds,” with Nicholas) make memorable guest appearances.
Onyx, Sasha Berliner (JMI), features the leader on vibraphone, joined by her quartet with Marcus Gilmore, drums; Burniss Travis II, upright and acoustic bass; and James Francies, piano and Fender Rhodes. Alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, whose forthright style and commanding tone suggest he is an admirer of Kenny Garrett, is a frequent guest. Also included are Julius Rodriguez’s analog synths and vocalist Thana Alexa.
Drum beats close to martial inform “Jade,” the opener, as Jaleel’s alto sax takes the lead over Sasha’s vibes and James’ Fender Rhodes. Thana’s eerie, echoey vocal introduces “Crescent Park (In Elliptical Time),” then fades away for a shimmering vibes solo over wafting synth clouds. “Polaris” showcases Jaleel on an insistently propulsive piece with some of the album’s most incisive solos from the leader and James. Sasha and James duet in an echo of the title of “Ephemerality” before the tempo picks up for Jaleel and the rhythm section.
“My Funny Valentine” is included twice and positioned centrally in the sequencing. “I” is a sumptuous solo version, with full vibraphone vibrato turned on by Sasha, who happily recalls Milt Jackson’s forays into solo ballads with the MJQ (Modern Jazz Quartet). “II” is an uptempo, jaggedly rhythmic quartet version, suggesting what a post-modern MJQ might sound like.
The longest track, “NW”, again features Jaleel’s alto sax in a jangly, bouncy tune that bristles with rhythmic energy. A short closer, “Boom’s Epilogue,” is an exercise in descending tones from vibes, piano, bass and alto sax.
Terri Lyne Carrington’s Social Science band plays Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on March 2. Sasha Berliner’s Quartet is at Café Bohemia on March 9, The Side Door Jazz Club on March 11, and Dizzy’s Club for its Late Nights Sessions on March 16-18.

SIMON MOULLIER
BAR BAYEUX / MARCH 1; SMALLS JAZZ CLUB / MARCH 5&27
Vibraphonist, composer and educator Simon Moullier brings his quartet to two New York locations in March, giving listeners an opportunity to hear firsthand why critic Raul D’Gama calls him “prodigiously gifted,” Nate Chinen praised his 2020 debut release Spirit Song (Outside in Music) as “a well-contoured post-bop effort” and DownBeat says that he instills “music with elegance.” With an undergraduate degree from Berklee College of Music and a master’s from the Thelonious Monk Institute, Simon has studied with icons Jimmy Heath, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Initially schooled in the classical tradition, he draws on his impressive technique to transcend his instrument’s percussive nature and find its melodic qualities. His newest recording, Isla, was just released and features his regular quartet comprised of pianist Lex Korten, bassist Alexander Claffy, and drummer Jongkuk Kim who join him for these concerts. DJS
MICHAEL RABINOWITZ
THE DJANGO / MARCH 1
Michael Rabinowitz has been one of the few bassoonists to make an impression on the contemporary jazz scene. After starting on the clarinet, Michael switched to the bassoon and earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Purchase. Since making his recording debut on the 1981 album Ira Sullivan Does It All, Michael has released several others as a leader, including 1995’s Bassoon On Fire and 2017’s Uncharted Waters. As a sideman, Michael has performed with Dave Douglas, Anthony Braxton and more. On March 1, Blue Ridge Bassoon Records is scheduled to release Michael’s Next Chapter. Michael is joined by pianist Matt King, bassist Andy McKee, and drummer Tommy Campbell, all playing on the new CD. EW
SARA CASWELL BIRDLAND THEATER / MARCH 5; JAZZ FORUM / MARCH 19
The award-winning, critically acclaimed violinist Sara Caswell celebrates the longawaited release of her new recording as a leader, The Way To You (Anzic Records). Since arriving in New York, Sara has become the first call violinist for many top artists including esperanza spalding, Henry Threadgill, Fred Hersch, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade and Dave Stryker. She has been named in the DownBeat Critics and Readers Polls every year since 2013. She co-leads the Caswell Sisters Quintet with vocalist Rachel Caswell. Equally at home in classical music, Sara is on the faculty at Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music and The New School. These album release concerts feature guitarist Jesse Lewis, bassist Ike Sturm, and drummer Jared Schonig. DJS
RAVI COLTRANE
BLUE NOTE / MARCH 7-12
Coming from a rich musical heritage, Ravi Coltrane has worked hard on developing his sound and standing on his own. Whether as a leader or as a sideman, Ravi’s lustrous sound and intrepid spirit are clear and well-defined. After graduating from California Institute of the Arts, Ravi cut his teeth with Elvin Jones, Steve Coleman and David Murray, to name three. Ravi’s debust recording as a leader was Moving Pictures in 1998, featuring the talents of Lonnie Plaxico and Jeff “Tain” Watts. His most recent album, 2012’s Spirit Fiction, was critically lauded and received a Grammy nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo. For his performances at the Blue Note, Ravi presents said spirit for a run of shows that are sure to leave everyone in awe. EW
JACKY TERRASSON
THE SIDE DOOR / MARCH 10; SMOKE JAZZ CLUB / MARCH 16-19
Since winning the 1993 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, pianist Jacky Terrasson has displayed a prodigious talent that has only gotten better with age. Born in Berlin and raised in Paris, Jacky began to play the piano at the age of five. After studying with Jeff Gardner, Jacky made his way to the United States where he briefly attended Berklee School of Music. He released his self-titled debut album in 1994, then went on to collaborate with a who’s who of jazz luminaries including Cassandra Wilson and Michael Brecker. Jacky’s most recent recording is 53 (Blue Note Records, 2019), which received a favorable review from the Associated Press and allmusic.com. Bassist Burniss Travis and drummer Jeremy Dutton join Jacky at The Side Door and for four evenings at Smoke. EW

DON BRADEN SOPAC / MARCH 12; BIRDLAND THEATER / MARCH 24-26
Tenor saxophonist / flutist Don Braden has forged a varied career in music since he left the engineering department at Harvard to pursue jazz in 1984. He’s played and toured with top talents including the Harper Brothers, Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis and the Mingus Big Band. Don has also composed for television shows, big bands and orchestras, and taught jazz at a number of colleges including Harvard. His most recent recording projects have been collaborations with Dutch bassist Joris Teepe, including the latest, Chemistry, wherein they are joined in a classic, Sonny Rollinsstyle trio by either drummer Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts or Louis Hayes. At SOPAC Don’s band includes bassist Kenny Davis, drummer Jeremy Warren, and pianist Art Hirahara, with Miki Hayama replacing Art at Birdland. GK
BEN WOLFE
THE DJANGO / MARCH 15; THE SIDE DOOR / MARCH 25
Bassist Ben Wolfe has said that he thinks “much of the music I’ve composed, particularly the music that includes strings, I think of as chamber music within a jazz context.” Although his latest album, Unjust, does not include strings (Fatherhood, the preceding one, does), he approached making it in the studio like a chamber music project, eschewing isolation booths and earphones and encouraging the participants to carefully listen to each other. Ben has proved a good listener and collaborator with a host of musicians, including Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis (in his Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) and Diana Krall. On Unjust, Ben deploys combinations from trio to sextet, with an emphasis on sonic clarity. He is showcasing some of that music at these gigs, with a trio TBA. GK
BILL CUNLIFFE
MEZZROW / MARCH 16
Bill Cunliffe began his career as pianist and arranger for the Buddy Rich Big Band, working with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and James Moody. A nine-time Grammy Award nominee which he has won once, he also won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition. He has established himself as a solo artist and bandleader with more than a dozen recordings under his name. Critic George Harris writes in Jazz Weekly that Cunliffe has “a perfect sense of swing,” and the Los Angeles Times has praised him as “one of the Southland’s most versatile musicians.” Bill is a Professor of Music at California State University Fullerton, honored as a Distinguished Faculty Member in 2010. He appears with his trio including drummer Tim Horner. DJS
ANDREA BRACHFELD
DAVID RUBENSTEIN ATRIUM / MARCH 24
Flutist and composer Andrea Brachfeld has refined her instrument over a 50-year career, sharing the stage with greats including Wallace Roney, Wycliffe Gordon, Ray Barretto and Paquito D’Rivera. She is a two-time winner of Latin New York Music Awards, the Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Pionero Award for her contribution to Latin music. Hubert Laws has said that her “marvelous tone and technique are astonishing,” and DownBeat singled her out as “one of the finest jazz flutists around.” Her Lincoln Center appearance reprises her success in the group Son Charanga, with vocalists Willy Torres and Robert Mier, violinists Sam Bardfeld and Eddie Venegas, pianist Bill O’Connell, bassist Ruben Rodriguez, drummer Willie Martinez, and percussionist Chembo Corniel. DIVA
DIZZY’S CLUB / MAR 30-APR 2
Based in New York, the DIVA Jazz Orchestra — the all-female big band led by drummer Sherrie Maricle — has thrilled audiences worldwide with their swinging performances for three decades. The growing number of talented female instrumentalists, and limited opportunities to join existing bands, inspired the late drummer Stanley Kay to launch DIVA. Many of the members have since proven themselves by leading their own record dates. DIVA’s band book offers inventive originals and arrangements by its members, along with commissioned works. Star soloists include alto saxophonist Alexa Tarantino, tenor saxophonist Laura Dreyer, trumpeters Jami Dauber and Rachel Therrien, with Sherrie’s powerhouse drumming fueling the band. The Dizzy’s engagement celebrates the 30th anniversary of DIVA’s debut performance. KD

BENNY GREEN: P PAYING TRIBUTE
By Ken Dryden
PIANIST BENNY GREEN GOT interested in jazz through his parents, his father playing tenor saxophone and listening to his jazz collection. Benny often heard Charlie Parker’s Dial albums and Monk’s Dream (Columbia, 1963), he shares. “It was fascinating seeing how the music affected my father, energetically and emotionally, watching him smile and moving to the music.” His parents encouraged Benny’s interest in jazz. Benny notes about his dad, “He told me the importance of learning the standard American popular songs and jazz tunes, the history of the music, the players and their influences.”
Active professionally in Berkeley, Calif., in his teens, Benny played with trumpeter Eddie Henderson, who told Benny to seek out drummer Billy Hart when he left for New York at 19. Billy took the young man under his wing and to various clubs, telling musicians of his ability and asking if he could sit in. Another New Yorker took Benny under his wing. Benny explains, “Walter Bishop Jr. called himself my ‘New York father’ as he introduced me to his colleagues, which carried a lot of weight. He let me know about things that I needed to work on and understood my dream to play with Art Blakey.”
Yet when Benny met Blakey (known as Bu) in 1982, he quickly called him “not ready” without even hearing him play.
“I would go see the Messengers often and record shows to stay abreast of the repertoire. I would hang out with Johnny O’Neal. We listened to music, and he helped me at the piano with things that I didn’t have together. In 1983, Johnny told me ‘Bu says you can sit in tonight.’ I knew the song, though I wasn’t really savvy about conversational, spontaneous accompaniment. Afterward, Art said, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing, I’m going to need you one day.’ That was all I needed, though it was five years before I joined the Messengers.”
In the meantime, vocalist Betty Carter, a taskmaster who educated many young musicians, hired Benny for her band. Benny recalls, “I ended up playing four wonderful years with Betty. She taught me so much. The only reason I left her was Art Blakey offered me a job, whom I joined in April 1987.” By 1989, Benny signed to record as a leader for Blue Note.
While Benny counts many jazz legends as mentors, one stands tall. “I met the great Oscar Peterson through the late great [bassist] Ray Brown. Ray introduced me to Oscar at the Bermuda Onion in Toronto, when I was playing in Ray’s trio
with Jeff Hamilton. Oscar was most encouraging from the first moment he heard me. He said, ‘It’s a pleasure to hear the piano played the way I like to hear it played.’ That began our friendship. I wrote letters to him. It challenged me to find substantial artistic questions to ask him. Oscar had me to his home numerous times and sat at the piano with me. More than just the notes, he gave me a very privileged opportunity to witness his humility to his musical elders and predecessors.”
Benny plays numerous standards and familiar jazz works, but he enjoys uncovering hidden gems written by jazz artists. Benny admits, “I try to get everything by Cedar Walton, Hank Mobley, Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Sonny Clark, Horace Silver. I’m not looking to prove how modern or innovative I am, I always want to be more authentic to the spirit of the music that I get from recordings. I heard a recent livestream of Jesse Davis playing Tom McIntosh’s ‘The Cupbearers,’ a piece I’ve heard played by Tommy Flanagan and John Hicks. It inspired me to begin learning it.”
When the COVID pandemic shut down venues, Benny focused on solo piano. “Playing for an audience is instrumental in development as a player and as a writer. I get an innate sense of how well things are translating. I am looking for the unspoken message to hit home with listeners, [to] become attuned to feeling the vibe of the audience. This affects my sense of tempo, flavor, harmonies and phrasing. I’m playing some pieces that I wrote thirty years ago. I’m drawn to medium and slow tempos. I play fast, but my ideal is thinking about notes being akin to speaking. I want to engage the listener and get my sentiment across, giving them a story line that they can follow.”
Benny has a new CD, Solo (Sunnyside), due on May 11. “The entire program is composed by pianists, including myself. I’d like to explore more of my favorite jazz pianists’ canons. It is my way of paying homage to my inspirations.”
Benny Green performs solo piano concerts at Jazz Forum on March 1718.

MANUEL VALERA:
THE TONE POET SWINGS
By Raul D’Gama
of the Rhodes and synthesizers by making fuller use of them on the album Expectativas (Mavo Records, 2013), recorded by an iteration of his New Cuban Express. The mood and atmosphere created by the sheer color and tone textures speak to Manuel’s rare ability with both composition and innovative instrumentation. This is something that he has advanced in the grandeur and spaciousness of later recordings as well. And this is true whether he performs in settings as intimate as a trio and quartet or in large ensembles.
“ I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN DRAWN not simply to music, but to the sound of music,” opines Manuel Valera, pianist, composer, pedagogue, Guggenheim Fellow, Grammy-winning artist. “In fact,” he adds, “If I were to say what keeps me awake at night, it is how to use tones and textures with such precision that I can then go to bed knowing that I have conveyed the deepest depths of feelings and emotions.” And before the profundity of that statement can leave its proverbial impact on the mind’s mind, he adds, “This is what composition is all about. It’s about using musical language, discovering newer and more advanced vocabularies, inventing new ways to express old feelings, and of course, to make the music leap off the page.”
It seems that the delight of making music as a swinging tone poet is not the only thrill for Manuel. His palpable joyousness goes much deeper. He is eager to talk about instruments. While he shares an abiding love for the concert grand piano, he more than flirts with a dizzying array of electric and electronic keyboards and synthesizers — something practically unheard-of among Cuban-born pianists of his and later generations. “I don’t think many people realize that the Fender Rhodes has a sound language all its own,” he says, without an ounce of conceit. The truth of that blunt statement is striking. “The radiance of the sound of the Rhodes is like no other keyboard. You have the ability to infuse your music with the kind of tintinnabulation that brings a whole new world of language and vocabulary to music. This enables you to invent new idioms that come with this new language.”
The seemingly obvious nature of that statement is suddenly shocking when confronted by the fact that Manuel is absolutely right. The great Clare Fischer also swore by the Rhodes. However, Manuel has extended the idea and sound
Remarkably, the penchant for tone poetry — an uncommon genius for it — is reflected not only in the breadth and majesty of music for larger ensembles, but also magically with a trio he created with bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer E.J. Strickland. The trisome captivated audiences with their ingenuity and musicality. Nothing — no kind of music, composition or composer — was considered out of bounds. As a result, Live at Firehouse 12 (Mavo Records, 2015) featured works by Wayne Shorter as well as the 19th and early 20th century founder of “realistic opera” Pietro Mascagni. This philosophical leap continued, and the trio reached its apogee with The Seasons (Mavo, 2017), which was created around radical impressions of Vivaldi’s legendary four violin concertos, The Four Seasons
Manuel is unstoppable when it comes to the lengths he will go to innovate, even to break so-called sacred molds. Lately he has used the large sound palette of the big band. The birth of the New Cuban Express Big Band’s album Distancia (Greenleaf Music, 2020) is a case in point. The pinnacle of Manuel’s achievement in the big band arena is most certainly José Martí En Nueva York (Greenleaf, 2020), an original song cycle based on nine poems from Martí’s seminal 1891 collection, Versos Sencillos.
Does this mean a return to Cuban roots? “Not at all,” says Manuel. “Of all the things I do, composing is the most important. I make it a point to sit at the piano and play… practice and play every day. That’s how I connect with emotions, feelings. At some point there is a collision between the intellect and emotion, and feeling,” he avers. “At the end of the day, what I’m after is expressing what comes from within in a form that translates emotion and state of mind in an idiom full of sound, where texture and color are embedded in melody, harmony and rhythm.” As a swinging tone poet, this puts Manuel at the top of his game.

Manuel Valera and his tone poetry in music is featured at Birdland on March 5, Zinc Bar on March 7, and Pregones / PRTT’s March is Music Series on March 18.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW
Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.
The Gerry Mulligan Sextet was pianoless, like his quartet, and so when there was no piano on the stage, we were using a tuning fork held against the top of my bass for a note to tune to. One day, while we were tuning, Zoot Sims dropped his mouthpiece cap, and it rang a very good A. So, from then on, we tuned to Zoot's metal cap.

In honor of Black History Month, the organization “About the Swing” presented several jazz performances. On Feb. 7, vocalist Carolyn Leonhart produced and led a tribute to Duke Ellington at the A Philip Randolph School. Here, she reviews the set with saxophonist Jason Marshall, who, when it’s not 10am, plays in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Joining them was pianist Helen Sung, bassist Mimi Jones and drummer Hank Allen-Barfield.
