A New Generation Draws on the Greats

Growing up in the Bronx, she was surrounded by the music of her parents: gospel, soul, Motown and even some disco. While at Fordham High School for the Arts, she did sing with the school jazz band, but it wasn’t until she enrolled at SUNY Purchase that she fell in love with the genre.

Of course, she was influenced by greats like Ella and Sarah, but many other iconic singers had an impact on her.

“Carmen McRae has been the biggest inspiration to me,” says Samara. “I listen to her a lot because she had a wonderful way with lyrics. And I listen to Betty Carter for the same reasons. Both of these singers had such an innovative approach to a song.”

That’s probably why Samara also pays attention to arrangers. “I listen to how certain arrangers approach a song,” she continues. “People like Duke Pearson and Blue Mitchell come to mind. Arranging really interests me and I want to test my boundaries.”

VOCALIST SAMARA JOY MAY HAVE just graduated from college, but her singing belies her age. She has a richness and confidence that harkens back to an older generation and keeps her very busy.

“This past year has been a whirlwind,” she explains, “and I’ve been working nonstop. We’ve done three tours, not only in this country, but in Europe. And I just finished school.”

Samara studied in the SUNY Purchase Jazz Studies Program where she learned from teachers such as Jon Faddis, Kenny Washington and Pasquale Grasso. In fact, while a student she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition and recorded her debut album, Samara Joy (Whirlwind), which included a plethora of standards such as “Stardust,” “Everything Happens to Me,” and “It Only Happens Once.”

Her most recent offering, Linger Awhile (Verve), was released in September and cemented her reputation as a very talented jazz singer. Nominated for two Grammy Awards, Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album, it also appeared on The New York Times Best of the Year List.

It’s not bad for someone who didn’t grow up surrounded by jazz. She does, however, come from a very musical family. Her grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, performed with the Philadelphia gospel group The Savettes and her singer, songwriter and producer

Both her performances and her releases reflect the effects of such artists. Her recording of Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight” employs lyrics by Jon Hendricks that she found on a disc by Carmen McRae. And another Hendricks tune, “Social Call,” shows off Samara’s exploration of vocalese.

“At my shows in January, I plan to sing Carmen McRae and some Nancy Wilson such as ‘Guess Who I Saw Today?’ and ‘Linger Awhile,’ which was recorded by Sarah Vaughan,” she says. “And I will definitely sing one of my favorites ‘Sweet Pumpkin,’ a song arranged and recorded by Blue Mitchell.”

She is equally enthusiastic about the trio who plays with her. “This year I have started working with the pianist Luther Allison who hails from North Carolina,” Samara explains. “He is not only a terrific soloist, but also the perfect accompanist. On bass, I am using the wonderful Felix Moseholm who currently studies at Julliard. And on drums, I’m thrilled to work with Evan Sherman. I got to know him because I sing with his big band.”

It is reassuring to have so many young people playing jazz. Not only is Samara only in her early twenties and just beginning her career, but she is surrounding herself with great young players. She performs regularly and is looking forward to upcoming dates at the Blue Note and on the Jazz Cruise.

“I’m always exploring and trying new things, and audiences not only get to hear my take on jazz standards, but they also hear some of the new material I’m working on,” she continues. “I take my new career a little at a time. It’s all still a learning expecontinued on page 23
