WINNING SPINS

THE OBVIOUS CONNECTION

BETween the two leaders whose albums are considered here is the trumpet. Both trumpeters are in the modern jazz mainstream, and that’s not all they share. There’s a certain élan, a joie de vivre bursting with exuberance. Their music is happy, extroverted jazz, nothing moody or brooding. It aims to please and that it does, never forgetting that the listeners are there to be pleased.

While both are trumpeters, they come from different generations, 31 years apart in age (63-32). Joe Magnarelli, the veteran, cleaves to his hard bop/soul jazz roots, while Benny Benack III embraces a much wider spectrum of music and also sings, prominently, on his new CD.

New York Osaka Junction , Joe Magnarelli (Steeplechase), presents a unique lineup for a jazz quartet with Joe’s trumpet and flugelhorn; Gary Smulyan, baritone sax; Akiko Tsuruga, Hammond B3 organ; and Rudy Royston, drums. Baritone sax and trumpet have been paired before, most notably in Gerry Mulligan’s mid-20th century quartet, but doing so in an organ-anchored group is unique. Both Joe and Gary are well-versed in the wonders of bebop and hard bop, able to spin and build intricate, engaging long solo lines. And Akiko brings the tidal wave of all-stops-out timbres and thick walls of sound at full tilt to the music, aided and abetted by the pushing-the-beat drumming of Rudy.

Nothing exemplifies the spirit of this album like the final number, “The End of a Love Affair,” which borrows the tried and true hard bop trope of taking a sentimental ballad and turning it into an up-tempo burner. Joe delivers the melody, and Gary takes the bridge and first solo turn. Joe and Akiko’s subsequent solos interact exhilaratingly with Rudy’s peripatetic drums, the horns trade fours a couple of times, Rudy solos, and the ensemble takes it out with huge organ chords. The title tune is pure, organ-driven hard bop, while Joe’s “Cousin Joanne” and “The Wedding” are propelled by rocking backbeats, the former a boogaloo, the latter a high-stepping prance.

Tempos range from heartbeat to bluesy or boppish swing. The only ballad with Joe’s flugelhorn is “These Foolish Things.” The most mellow piece is Joe’s “Lament for Lorraine,” an elegy to a recently deceased

aunt with a warm bath of a solo from Gary. The organ-ic spirit of the band is exemplified by Joe’s soul jazz tribute to his wife, the rollicking, down-home “Reverend Tsuruga.”

Third Time’s the Charm , Benny Benack III (La Reserve), finds the leader following in the tradition of such singing trumpeters as Louis Armstrong, Bunny Berigan and Chet Baker. Benny has a smooth vocal tone and sings in the style of male vocalists in Swing Era big bands, similar to Harry Connick Jr. today. Benny sings on ten of the 14 tracks here, including four of his own ten compositions. The final number is a spirited vocal duet, containing traded scat choruses, with Michael Stephenson on Mary Lou Williams’ perky “Pretty Eyed Baby.”

Benny is versatile, incorporating the burring vibrato of pre-bop styles with the fluency of the post-bop mainstream. His mid-tempo original, “Catching Drift,” has a particularly dazzling solo, reaching effortlessly the horn’s full ranges, from its lowest to its highest and back. On most tracks, including that one, he’s joined by Emmet Cohen, piano; Russell Hall, bass; and Kyle Poole, drums. Three tenor saxophonists are occasional guests: Chad LefkowitzBrown, Reuben Fox and Michael, the singer on “Pretty Eyed Baby,” who makes the group a quintet on Benny’s “Roylike.” Guitarist Peter Bernstein plays on three tunes, among them a duet on Benny’s “Thank You For The Heartbreak,” with the leader singing and playing Harmon-muted trumpet. A second vocal duet includes dueling trumpets as Bria Skonberg guests on Duke Ellington’s “In A Mellotone,” trading vocal and trumpet obligati roles with Benny. He expresses his interest in rock in a cover of The Guess Who’s 1970 hit, “American Woman,” a creative vocal-bass duet with Russell, with Benny picking up his horn for a very few bars toward the end.

Joe Magnarelli appears at Ornithology Jazz Club on June 4, and at Tavern on George on June 15. Benny Benack III has an album release gig for Third Time’s The Charm at Dizzy’s Club on June 26, and also performs at Smalls Jazz Club’s late-night set on June 14 and 21.

Rachel Z’s Keys to Jazz

PIANIST, KEYBOARDIST, COM-

poser, bandleader and educator Rachel Z burst on the scene as a Young Lioness in the 80s. She is one of the most multidimensional musicians of her generation, blessed with a lithe, lyrical and limber pianism, an inventive and energetic amalgam of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Joanne Brackeen and Lyle Mays. She’s worked with a number of jazz stars including Bobby Watson, Stanley Clarke, Regina Carter, Terri Lyne Carrington and the ensemble Steps Ahead. And her work with rock icon Peter Gabriel and a host of altrock/electronica musicians, DJs and producers showcases her versatility and her open-minded musical outlook.

But acoustic jazz is her primary musical language, as evidenced by her engagement at Zinc Bar. In fact, she’s perplexed by those who typecast her as a “fusionist” and see this gig as a “return” to jazz. “I started in small clubs [like this] in the city in 1988, playing acoustic trios with Charnett Moffett and Billy Hart, or Lenny White,” Rachel proudly refutes. “I saw on Apple Music that even if my music was in the piano trio format, they still categorized it as fusion. But I do have a pretty strong background in acoustic piano, and I think I've assimilated the elements of the lineage in a good way.”

Joining Rachel at Zinc Bar is her yearold triad consisting of drummer Ben Perowsky — who currently plays in the Broadway musical Hadestown — and bassist Jonathan Toscano with special guest percussionist Mino Cinelu. “Ben and I had a long collaboration going back to the late 80s,” Rachel fondly recalls. “His playing is really loose, and at the same time, really precise, and has a very deep groove and swing. Jonathan sounds like a kind of a young Ron Carter. He plays harmonically complex [basslines] and has a really deep pocket, like Ron. Mino played on my 1996 album, One’s Own Room, and he brings his experience of playing with Miles Davis and Weather Report.” The trio’s setlist includes “These Days” by the Foo Fighters played in 15/8 time, a new song Rachel composed entitled “What I Fear,” and an acoustic version of “The Three Marias” from the late Wayne Shorter’s 1985 LP, Atlantis.

Rachel’s connection to Wayne goes all

the way back to when she heard his labyrinthine tenor sax lines and Herbie’s piano solo on “Circle” on Miles Davis’ album Miles Smiles in high school. She spent invaluable time with Wayne, working on his Grammy-winning 1995 High Life album in pre-production, melding her synth arrangements with live instrumentation. Wayne became a mentor to her, waxing philosophically about his Buddhist-inspired approach to music and life. “I kind of miss that he’s not here to be a guardian, to reinforce everything that we always loved about the 60s Jazz movement, and how important that was.”

Buoyed and guided by Wayne’s genrecrossing example, Rachel released 13 albums as a leader including her debut, Trust the Universe; her salute to women pioneers, Room of One’s Own; and her acoustic tribute recordings to Wayne and Joni Mitchell, On The Milky Way Express and Moon At The Window. In 2010, Rachel and her husband, Omar Hakim — a stellar drummer who worked with Dire Straits, Sting and Weather Report — formed The Trio of OZ with bassist Solomon Dorsey, and released their eponymously-titled CD, which features a cover of The Police’s “King of Pain.” In 2017, the Hakims, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Mauritian bassist Linley Marthe formed the supergroup, OZmosys. Their debut EP, Eyes to the Future, Vol. 1, was released in 2019. For Rachel, the inclusion of Omar into her life has been a godsend. “He’s a very valuable spiritual partner, who helps me navigate some of the truths of making music,” continued on page 25

ETIENNE CHARLES: Beyond Islands

bands, steel pan bands, as well as with the Trinidad National Orchestra.” His interest turned to jazz when he was 17 and heard Louis Armstrong and Clifford Brown recordings. They turned his musical ambitions toward jazz, prompting him to move to Tallahassee in 2002 to study at Florida State University. He pursued an advanced degree at Juilliard beginning in 2002, and for a decade was on the jazz faculty at Michigan State University. He is currently on the faculty at University of Miami.

Last month, I caught Etienne at a concert where he appeared with just a bassist and drummer. His music was a heady, seamless blend of swing, hard bop and Caribbean, featuring his bright, brash, engaging trumpet and flugelhorn sounds. Among the tunes he played was a version of “I’ll Remember April” as recorded in a driving tempo by Clifford Brown with Max Roach. He also played Caribbean-inflected originals and even sang a couple of calypsos (he performed and wrote for calypso bands as a teenager in Trinidad) by the legendary Lord Kitchener, enlisting the audience to sing the choruses.

In 2018, Etienne became that season’s edition of the SFJAZZ Collective trumpet player, an experience that afforded him with the opportunity to bring his charts — a unique melding of Caribbean and jazz influences — to a group of top-flight jazz musicians.

When asked who affected his playing and whom he admires, Etienne rattled off a long list of musicians, not just jazz musicians, from Miles Davis to David Sanchez and Roy Hargrove, but also such pop-soul figures as Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Ray Charles.

Etienne leads a number of different bands, ranging from a quartet with cello and cuatro to a large ensemble that includes horns, guitar, dancers and steel pan players. That last aggregation is what he is bringing to the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center this month.

ETIENNE

CHARLES, THE TRUMpeter and occasional singer from Trinidad, used to think that Caribbean music and jazz were distinctly different.

“But now I know they are all the same music,” he said in a phone interview. “It’s all the same: Caribbean music is jazz, and jazz is Caribbean music. The AfricanCaribbean musicians who came to New Orleans after slavery was abolished brought their sounds to where jazz was born.”

Etienne was born in Trinidad in 1983 and began playing trumpet at age 10. “I was playing with reggae and calypso

The show — and it is a show with dancing that also contains recordings of the actual Carnival in Trinidad-Tobago — is called Carnival: The Sound of A People, an outgrowth of his 2019 album of the same name.

Etienne says of Carnival, “It’s music. It’s dance. It’s costume. It’s improvisation. It’s history. It’s social commentary, political commentary. It’s all of that in one word. And the only way to do it in a show is to have as much of it as possible.”

Carnival is a deep dive into the sounds and culture of Caribbean music and dance, one that incorporates the actual sounds of

SPOTL

STEVE LASPINA

SMALLS JAZZ CLUB / JUNE 2-3

Bassist Steve LaSpina is one of the most prominent players around, having toured and recorded with Stan Getz, Benny Carter, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Randy Brecker, Pat Martino and most recently, Jim Hall. A respected educator, he has been on the faculty of William Paterson University for more than two decades, and guest lecturer at Berklee College of Music and other institutes. In ArtsJournal, critic Doug Ramsey praises his “fluidity and strength,” and German critic Juerg Sommer called him a “fast-finger master-instrumentalist.” Steve is also noted as a composer of both jazz and classical music. At Smalls Jazz Club, his group is billed as the Reunion Quartet with alto saxophonist Billy Drewes, trumpeter Dave Ballou, pianist Marc Copland, and drummer Jeff Hirshfield. DJS

BEN CASSARA

PANGEA / JUNE 7; NORTH SQUARE / JUNE 18

Critic Joe Lang called singer Ben Cassara “one of the most engaging vocalists around,” and critic/author Will Friedwald observed that he “gives a song a unique distinctive flavor all its own,” which is why this artist has gone from off-off Broadway to jazz vocals. In addition to Wednesday Jazz Series at Pangea, Ben has performed in the metropolitan area at Shanghai Jazz, Jazz at Kitano, Trumpets and the Metropolitan Room. His 2023 CD, What a Way to Go (Audiophile), includes tracks by the great Dave Frishberg, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Ronny Whyte. To celebrate this new release at Pangea, Ben has Harry Allen on sax, Josh Richman on piano, Dean Johnson on bass, and Tim Horner, drums. At North Square, his trio consists of Addison Frei on piano and Perrin Grace on bass. DJS

SEAN MASON

SMOKE JAZZ CLUB / JUNE 7

When pianist Sean Mason arrived on the New York scene by way of North Carolina, trio already in hand, his novel sound was dominated by an ear-catching, southern, gospel-infused stride piano. And if there were any lingering doubts that the style was more shtick than substance, Sean has demonstrated a remarkable and mature versatility and range in the years that followed. While he often favors the piano trio format, his debut release in 2023 (Blue Engine Records) will feature a quintet and mostly original compositions, produced by Branford Marsalis. Young but already established and very much in demand in New York and beyond, Sean is a talent to hear while you still can. He brings Anthony Hervey on trumpet, Chris Lewis on tenor saxophone, Felix Moseholm on bass, and Domo Branch on drums to Smoke. CK

ARK OVRUTSKI

TAVERN ON GEORGE / JUNE 8

Bassist/composer Ark Ovrutski has based a career on having an open mind to the melodic possibilities of the bass. Born in Ukraine, Ark started working in Poland where he performed and recorded with saxophonists Zbiegniew Namyslowski and Piotr Baron and trumpeter Piotr Wojtasik, among others. Ark made his way to the U.S. in 2005 and began to freelance with numerous musicians such as trombonist Curtis Fuller, saxophonist James Spaulding, and pianist Larry Willis. Ark’s latest release, 2018’s Journey Moments, was met with acclaim with All About Jazz stating “In these nine songs — five Ovrutski originals and four classics — we find light, depth, strength, humor and sensitivity.” At Tavern On George, Ark is joined by saxophonist Todd Bashore, pianist Brandon McCune, and a yet-to-be-announced drummer. EW

MIKE CLARK

MAUREEN’S JAZZ CELLAR / JUNE 16

For years, Oakland drummer Mike Clark was the best-kept syncopated secret in the Bay Area. That changed in 1974, when Mike replaced original Headhunter Harvey Mason on Herbie Hancock’s Thrust album. His propulsive percolations powered Herbie’s Afro-anthemic “Palm Grease” and the labyrinthine, up-tempo “Actual Proof.” Mike’s drumming is straight out of New Orleans which means it’s impossible for him not to swing. He’s played with the late Wayne Shorter, Tony Bennett, bluesman Albert King, and several editions of Headhunter bands. Hot on the heels of his new CD, Mike Clark Plays Herbie Hancock (Sunnyside) with bassist Leon Lee Dorsey and pianist Jon Davis, Mike brings pianist/organist Mike LeDonne and bassist Alex Claffy to Maureen’s Jazz Cellar. He can also be heard at The Django on June 8. EH

ANITA BROWN JAZZ ORCHESTRA

BIRDLAND / JUNE 18

This gig celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Anita Brown Jazz Orchestra’s first album, 27 East. Anita has been an influential presence in the jazz large ensemble field since even before then, but largely behind-the-scenes. She’s served as an executive producer or assisted in producing albums by Jim McNeely, Maria Schneider and others. She was in the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop for eight years. Anita has won numerous awards and commissions for large jazz ensemble works. Like the late Diane Moser of Montclair, Anita, from Rockland County, N.Y., has been leading a big band in metro New York for over 20 years, and she’s part of a select group of women bandleaders including Diane, Maria and Toshiko Akiyoshi. Her gig on the 18th is an early show. Doors open at 4:30pm. GK

MIKE LEDONNE

MEZZROW / JUNE 12; JAZZ FORUM / JUNE 23-24

A double-threat keyboardist, Mike LeDonne is equally at home on the piano and the Hammond B-3 organ. In his four-plus decades as a working musician, he’s amassed an incredibly wide resumé of credits, working with swing, bop and post-bop musicians, from Roy Eldridge and Benny Goodman to Sonny Rollins and Milt Jackson. Playing organ as well as piano since he was 10 years old, Mike has made good use of his vintage Hammond B-3, which was the house organ at the jazz club Smoke for years. For the last 14 years prior to COVID, he had led his Groover (organ) Quartet there on Tuesday nights. He’s bringing the same band to these gigs, with Eric Alexander, tenor sax; Peter Bernstein, guitar; Kenny Washington, drums, and an additional horn TBA. GK

MELISSA STYLIANOU

IMMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH / JUNE 24

Vocalist Melissa Stylianou has been singled out for her bright, consistently swinging interpretations of ballads, bossa novas and show tunes. She left Canada for New York City to study with pianist Garry Dial, though it was Melissa’s meeting guitarist Gene Bertoncini that proved fortuitous. He became a great mentor and collaborator. Dream Dancing, her latest Anzic CD, features Melissa with Gene and bassist Ike Sturm for an intimate session of mostly familiar songs that showcase her mastery of phrasing. She creates new avenues through well-traveled territory. Melissa celebrates her project with a show in Rochester featuring guitarist Roni Ben-Hur (who frequently plays with Gene) and bassist Josh Marcum. The same group will perform on July 2 at Room 31 in the Arlo NoMad Hotel. KD

ERENA TERAKUBO

THE DJANGO / JUNE 29

Erena Terakubo burst onto the New York City jazz scene by wowing other musicians at late-night jam sessions. She had already achieved star status in her home country, Japan. After recording an album with Kenny Barron while she was still in high school, Erena received a Presidential Scholarship to Berklee College of Music. Erena's playing is honed from a decade of musical cross-pollination with players like Vince Herring, Ron Carter and Emmet Cohen. She can leap from a soulful whisper to a joyful shout over a single thrilling phrase. Her septet plays all new arrangements by Erena, with David Sneider on trumpet, Jacob Chung on tenor sax, Marty Scott on trombone, Sterling Cozza on piano, Caleb Tobocman on bass, and Hank Allen-Barfield on drums. JZ

STEVE SMITH

THE FALCON / JUNE 28; BIRDLAND THEATER / JUNE 30-JULY 2

Drummer Steve Smith has been at the top of his profession for more than four decades. He has toured and worked with some of the biggest names in music including Journey, Bryan Adams, Mariah Carey, Jean-Luc Ponty, Ahmad Jamal, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans and Buddy DeFranco. Modern Drummer named him one of the Top 25 Drummers of All Time and inducted him into its Hall of Fame. Beyond his top jazz work on recordings featuring Larry Coryell, Victor Wooten and Steve Marcus, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Although he is regarded as a “fusion-style” drummer, Steve is an icon who transcends categorizing. For both gigs, his Vital Information group includes tenor saxophonist George Garzone, keyboardist Manuel Valera, and bassist Janek Gwizdala. DJS

Jimmy

Bosch: The Human Voice of Heart Music

JIMMY BOSCH HAS A LOT TO SAY.

But although he can sing, he does much of the talking through his trombone. Of all the horns, the trombone is closest to the human voice, and not only does Jimmy know that all too well, he makes that work to his advantage every time he steps out to play. “As I propel my breath through 70 centimeters of brass tubing, I am actually using my voice to make every sound. In effect, I’m singing and telling tall tales … everything that I would do as a vocalist,” he reveals in his velvet-textured tenor. “It’s my own voice, and it comes from deep inside my heart,” he says, pointing at his chest.

There is another reason why Jimmy has a lot to say for himself. He is celebrating 50 years as a professional musician. “It’s humbling to be able to make music with some of the greatest Afro-Caribbean musicians on the planet,” he says, crossing his hands across his chest to show how blessed he feels. Jimmy has every reason to be proud of his musical beginnings. He was the trombonist of choice for the legendary recordings produced by Andy Garcia to relaunch the career of the great Cuban contrabassist, Israel “Cachao” Lopez when Andy discovered Cachao working in a restaurant in Miami.

Jimmy’s voice and his heart music are heard all over The Master Sessions, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (Sony, 1994 and 1995). His is a tone of voice that gleams like bright gold. Having an extroverted personality, his lyricism bubbles over, often evoking effervescent surf caressing the sand on a beach somewhere on an island in the Caribbean Sea. In it you hear the voice of all the great ancestors from the sizzle and bop of Generoso “Tojo” Jiménez to the lofty glissandos of Barry Rogers. Jimmy’s trombone voice, however, has a velour all its own.

This is what he brings to his celebrated New York Salsa Jazz Project.

Reminiscing about his early days, Jimmy once told the critic David M. Carp about his perfectly natural embouchure, speaking of his “natural aptitude for the trombone” as an unexplainable gift. “I never really learned to practice with discipline and do the daily things like most musicians who practice for four or five hours a day,” he admitted. “I’ve basically put the horn up to my face and my whole attitude, my whole scope and thinking is that I just get to play with passion and love, and it comes out and that’s what happens.” Heart music? You bet!

And suddenly, fifty years have passed since his debut, Soneando Trombon (Rykodisc, 1998). Yet Jimmy Bosch seems unstoppable. He will shortly embark on a Golden Jubilee world tour and also has enough material for a new album. Having graced legendary bands of Manny Oquendo, Cachao, Ray (Barretto), Eddie (Palmieri), “It’s time to take my cats Jeff Lederer, Alex Ayala, Camilo Molina … on the road to celebrate my 50 years” he says.

Jimmy Bosch and the New York Salsa Jazz Project invite you to lose yourself in the music at Dizzy’s Club on June 28 and 29.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW

Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

In October 1952 Stan Getz hired me to play with his quintet for a week in Boston, with Jimmy Raney on guitar, Roy Haynes on drums and Jerry Kaminsky on piano. Stan kept me on the band, and we went into Birdland in New York for the next week. Roy was living in Boston, so Stan replaced him with Frank Isola, and Duke Jordan was our piano player. After that week, the band recorded for a few days and then played a week in Baltimore, and then we came home to New York for a week off.

On the next Monday, Stan called me and said that some band had cancelled their booking at Birdland, so we were going in there again for a week. When I went in on Tuesday, I found Kenny Clarke setting up his drums, and assumed Frank Isola had turned down the gig because he had another booking somewhere.

We played the first set, which was broadcast on the radio, as Birdland did every Tuesday night. When I was setting up for the second set, I saw Frank Isola sitting in the “peanut gallery” beside the bandstand. “Hey, Frank,” I said, “What’s up?” Frank shrugged and said, “I don’t know. I turned on the radio and found out I was fired!”

Rachel lovingly asserts.

These days, Rachel is making music on a number of fronts. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, she teaches at The New School and Montclair State University, performs with a younger “Nextgen” version of OZmosys, and she will release a trio record this summer or fall. “I’m happy that I made the most out of my opportunities to be connected to the masters of this music that caused me to play this music,” she proudly says. “I'm pretty happy about being able to lead in this field, to write the way I do, and be able to control my improvisations.”

Rachel Z and her trio, bassist Jonathan Toscano and drummer Ben Perowsky, perform at Zinc Bar on June 13.

CHARLES...continued from page 15 its namesake. Etienne’s approach could be called musical anthropology, so thoroughly does he integrate the culture into his music.

He’s also currently working on another, similar music/anthropology-like project, one about San Juan Hill, the former neighborhood where Lincoln Center now stands. Once a vibrant, multi-cultural community boasting many Caribbean and AfroAmericans (Thelonious Monk lived there), it will be the subject of Etienne’s next album, exploring the various musical strands that helped weave the neighborhood together.

Etienne Charles’ Carnival: The Sound of A People is in concert at the Appel Room, Jazz at Lincoln Center on June 9 and 10.

A Moment You Missed by Fran

It’s not often I am asked to attend a rehearsal at Carnegie Hall. So, I was eager to attend marimbaist Mika Stoltzman’s session at the Weill Concert Hall at the famed venue on May 2. I know Mika’s work from her recording with Steve Gadd of Chick Corea’s Armando’s Rhumba — 2022 Spirit of Chick Corea — and her rehearsal was thrilling. What a delight to be in the empty concert hall, alone with Mika and her marimba.
