BETWEEN THE COVERS

All Jazz Cats of Any Color Welcome

The Rhythm of Unity: A Jazz Musician’s Lifelong Journey Beyond Black and White

THE LATE PIANIST MIKE LONGO

never sought to become a major star. Instead, he focused on continuously growing as a musician, encouraging others as a jazz educator, and fighting the two-way street of racism within and outside music. Mike was well underway with his autobiography when he succumbed to COVID in March 2020, but his wife Dorothy, with the help of writer Joscelyn Duffy, fleshed out his work to publish The Rhythm of Unity: A Jazz Musician’s Lifelong Journey Beyond Black and White

Even as a young boy, Mike was upset about the issues that both Blacks and whites had associating with one another. He was mature for his years, realizing that one evaluates people on their character and actions, not by color. This was a recurring theme when, for example, management of a private golf club in then all-white Plantation, Fla. (a suburb west of Fort Lauderdale) complained about Mike having a Black musician in his band. There were later incidents when promoters or journalists dismissed a white man playing “Black” music as inauthentic, racists claimed he was taking the job of a Black musician, or whites disliked his having a Black rhythm section.

Mike learned to pick out songs on the piano that he heard on the radio before beginning formal lessons at the age of eight. His father was a part-time bassist working weekends. His interest in jazz

grew with his initial captivation with boogie woogie, and that led him to winning the first of many competitions.

Tuning into late night jazz radio and getting the opportunity to attend a Jazz at the Philharmonic concert featuring numerous all-stars pushed Mike to learn more. He was fascinated with the recordings of both Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Peterson, never dreaming that he would end up learning much from both of them. Mike joined Dizzy’s band, often returning for individual gigs after he went out on his own.

His drive to play his best was matched by his devotion to educating other musicians. In addition to teaching, he published numerous music books through his business, Consolidated Artists Productions (or CAP), which was also home to his record label. He released his own recordings and those by others.

Mike’s story also reflects his Baháʼí faith to which he and his wife were drawn by Dizzy Gillespie. It provided a positive outlook that inspired Mike throughout the rest of his life.

Trained in classical piano, Dorothy Longo was initially one of Mike’s piano students. Their relationship grew into marriage, and she played a strong supportive role in her husband’s multi-faceted career. Dorothy fills in valuable commentary about his life. This is a rewarding autobiography that will get readers to explore more of Mike Longo’s discography.

WINNING SPINS

TENOR SAXOPHONIST GEORGE

Coleman revisits highlights of his career through some of his favorite tunes on an album in the SmallsLIVE Foundation Living Masters Series. And trumpeter Terell Stafford is the brass horn in a sextet of Temple University jazz faculty, celebrating the compositions of some iconic jazz musicians from Philadelphia, Temple’s home.

Live at Smalls Jazz Club , George Coleman (Cellar Music), finds the 88year-old living up to his comment in the liner notes: “Well I’m more adventurous now.” One of the very last remaining alumni of Miles Davis’ acoustic jazz bands, George began his career with bluesmen B.B. King and Ray Charles, and became known for his hard charging style in the post-bop era. Here he reveals a lyrical side to complement his tough tenor swing. Joining him in this live recording at Smalls is the club’s proprietor Spike Wilner, piano; Peter Washington, bass; and Joe Farnsworth, drums. Spike especially recalls the empathetic accompaniment of Tommy Flanagan-led trios behind classic John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins quartet albums of the 50s and 60s.

George opens with a Miles Davis tune, “Four,” but rather than jump into it, he and Spike gently explore the melody in slow, semi-rubato time before the rhythm section kicks it into gear around the 2:10 minute mark. The pair also eschew rhythmic for semi-rubato openings on “My Funny Valentine,” “New York, New York,” and “When Sunny Gets Blue.” That last strikingly begins with the bridge and resolves into a lovely, extended duet rendering of the song.

George explores his blues and R&B roots with “At Last,” preaching his solo over Joe’s strong backbeat, and on his own “Blues for Smalls,” at a satisfying midtempo with solos all around, including tenor-drums trades. Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Meditation” is introduced with a singular tenor sax cadenza before prancing

along on a bossa cum samba rhythm. Throughout the album, George tailors his sound and approach to each track with full artistic command.

Fly With The Wind, Terell Stafford, Dick Oatts, Tim Warfield, Bruce Barth, Mike Boone, Justin Faulkner (BCM+D), is the Temple University jazz faculty sextet honoring four Philadephia composers: Jimmy Heath, McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane and Lee Morgan. The title refers to one of Tyner’s most compelling compositions.

The opener, Heath’s “All Members,” an easy hard bop swinger, begins with Terell’s clarion trumpet calls, answered by Dick’s alto sax and Tim’s tenor sax, the callresponse leading to Terell’s bright and brassy solo, as each member of the sextet takes a turn. Bruce, the pianist, arranged all four tracks. The centerpiece is the title tune, memorably recorded by the composer with his big band. Terell’s horn presages the cyclonic theme, all the horns framing Bruce’s piano as it rides the hurtling momentum of the piece. The theme is reprised behind driving solos from Terell and Dick, leading to a duologue between Tim’s tenor sax and Justin’s drums before Bruce returns with the theme and Terell ends it with a reprise of the opening heraldic horn.

Saxes create dreamy, floating lines to usher in Coltrane’s “Naima,” the theme voiced by Terell’s plangent tones, the mellow mood sustained in solos from Bruce, Tim and Mike before Terell again takes it out. The CD concludes with one of Lee Morgan’s lesser known, more intricate boogaloos, “Yes I Can, No You Can’t.” The enticing rhythms evoke a round of inspired solos from all members of this superb sextet.

George Coleman brings his quartet to Jazz Forum on May 5-6. Terell Stafford is at Smoke Jazz Club on May 18-21.

BILL MAYS:

A Leader Who Can Follow

PRACTICALLY THE FIRST THING

that one notices in conversation with the veteran pianist Bill Mays is the extent to which a sense of spirituality suffuses the exchange whenever the subject is music. In a career spanning over four decades and dozens of albums as both a leader and sideman — including playing with some of the brightest names in the jazz firmament, such as Gerry Mulligan, Sarah Vaughan and Freddie Hubbard — Bill, 79, still expresses his excitement about the music. “Playing music is the greatest non-verbal and democratic communication between people. Being lost in moments of creation where there’s no thought given to anything else is the most healing endeavor (outside of meditation and selfless giving) I can engage in. It’s when I can function at my spiritual best. It’s when I can experience connectedness, and be joyous and free.”

Having grown up in a thoroughly musical family in Sacramento, Calif., that sense of connection with the art form was present early on. Bill’s father was an amateur pianist and trombonist, and his mother was a singer. “They provided an encouraging atmosphere in which I could study music from age 5. There was music of all stripes in the home,” he says. There was classical music and jazz, and a formative concert-going experience for the 15-yearold that would leave an indelible mark on the young musician: Earl Hines playing solo piano. Some of his earliest musical influences were “the Miles Davis Quintet, and then some of the important Californiabased musicians in the Lighthouse AllStars (I’d eventually work with three of them decades later: Shelly Manne, Conte Condoli, Bud Shank).” To that musical brew, add in the Black churches of southeast Los Angeles, coupled with the rhythm and blues of the day, and one begins to hear the makings of the sound that would define Bill’s long and storied career.

As is the case with so many pianists, that career on the bandstand has been marked by a delicate balance between being at times a leader and at other times a sideman. In terms of the latter, his discographic work reflects a career recording alongside a breathtaking variety of musicians across genres from Benny Golson to Frank Zappa, as well as serving as an accomplished accompanist to an impressive list of jazz vocalists. When asked how he conciliates leading his own groups and accompanying other musicians, Bill says that “having the willingness to not take

the lead but to subjugate my ego to the ‘greater good’” is key. He continues, “This involves knowing when to lead, and knowing when to follow, when to lay out.” Another important element of that balance is “playing the situation. [It] involves understanding where the soloist is coming from and what he or she is trying to achieve, as well as understanding the nature of the song and helping the vocalist deliver the most successful rendition of it.”

On the other hand, one gets a taste of his philosophy as a bandleader on his latest work Autumn Serenade (Sunnyside). “As a bandleader, my ‘voice’ is more at the forefront, though often I’m again in the role of accompanist.” He says that he endeavors as a leader, composer and arranger to provide an atmosphere where his ideas and those of his co-creators achieve “unity and a group message.”

Bill’s latest CD emerged from a period of personal and political turbulence. For this particular session, he chose Dean Johnson on bass, Ron Vincent on drums, Matt Balitsaris on acoustic guitar, and Judy Kirtley on vocals on one track, musicians who are “deep listeners, chance-takers, who have something to say and undercontinued on page 25

BIRDLAND / MAY 2-6; RIDGEFIELD PLAYHOUSE / MAY 19

One of the rising stars of his generation, pianist Emmet Cohen has mastered styles including stride, swing, bop and post-bop. He puts his own stamp on older songs. Just in his early 30s, Emmet’s strengths as a composer are impressing veteran musicians who have shared the stage or record dates with him. When COVID shut down New York City, Emmet launched the live podcast Emmet’s Place to play for jazz fans, and it continues today. At Birdland, Emmet performs with bassist Philip Norris and drummer Kyle Poole. He also features several special guests, including vibraphonist Warren Wolf on Tuesday, trumpeter Bruce Harris and saxophonist Jerry Weldon on Wednesday, and saxophonist Houston Person on Saturday. At Ridgefield Playhouse, Emmet plays with bassist Joey Ranieri and drummer Kyle Poole. KD

STEPHANE WREMBEL

THE WOODLAND / MAY 3-5; THE TOWN HALL / MAY 6

Stephane Wrembel keeps guitarist Django Reinhardt’s spirit alive. Stephane began to play at age 16 with his initial influences being Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. He came to the U.S. from France to study at Berklee College of Music, and settled in New York in 2003. He started the Django à Gogo Festival, dedicated to the gypsy jazz style that Django made famous. This year, the festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with performances in New York and New Jersey, where he is joined by guitarist Josh Kaye and a multitude of talented, like-minded musicians, including Sarah King on vocals at The Woodland and at least five additional guitarists at The Town Hall. This month also marks the release of Stephane’s 17th album entitled Django New Orleans (Water Is Life Records). EW

ROGER

KELLAWAY

MEZZROW / MAY 3-4

Roger Kellaway has long been a musical chameleon who finds it easy to switch gears between projects, whether it’s a jazz trio, solo piano, movie or television soundtrack, or backing a vocalist. A master of many styles, Roger’s set list frequently includes surprises. Roger’s gifts as an improviser and composer are reflected in his vast discography. He also served as Bobby Darin’s music director and arranger. Roger’s regular trio has long included bass and guitar, but he makes his first appearance with bass and drums in two decades with Jay Leonhart, Dennis Mackrel and special guest Roni BenHur on guitar at Mezzrow. This presentation is a part of the SmallsLIVE Living Masters series, which is underwriting the new CD that the band is recording on May 5. KD

JEB PATTON

CELLAR DOG / MAY 3

Now a veteran of the New York scene, pianist Jeb Patton has made a name for himself as both an accomplished bandleader and as an indispensable accompanist. For the latter, look no further than his very busy schedule playing alongside some of the brightest names of vocal jazzdom, very often in the piano-centered clubs of the West Village. In addition, he has played alongside some of the music’s most boldfaced luminaries, past and present, including the brothers Heath, George Coleman and Rodney Green. Whether as a bandleader or sideman, his broad style and keen, intimate touch have a way of pairing perfectly with an expansive variety of players in clubs big and small. CK

JOHN PIZZARELLI

MAYO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER / MAY 5; COUNT BASIE CENTER FOR THE ARTS / MAY 6

Vocalist/guitarist John Pizzarelli celebrates the release of Stage & Screen (Palmetto), a collection of classic songs. He has built his reputation on fiery guitar work and vocal interpretations of the Great American Songbook, as well as salutes to giants including Paul McCartney and Frank Sinatra. Inspired by Nat King Cole, John also learned from father, Bucky Pizzarelli. At MPAC, John leads a big band tribute to Bucky, with favorites such as “Three Little Words,” “Avalon” and “Sing Sing Sing.” In addition to bassist Mike Karn and pianist Isaiah Thompson, he is joined by trumpets Tony Kadleck, Bud Burridge, James Zollar and Mark McGowan; trombones John Mosca, Mark Patterson, Jason Jackson and Doug Purviance; saxes Chris Byars, Dan Block, Awan Rashad, Mark Lopeman and Kenny Berger; and drummer Andy Watson. At Count Basie Center, his trio includes Mike and Isaiah. DJS

IRIS ORNIG

PANGEA / MAY 10

Bassist/composer Iris Ornig has surrounded herself with stellar musicians such as Helen Sung, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Allison Miller since arriving in New York from Germany 20 years ago. She captured DownBeat’s Best Album of 2013 with her selfproduced No Restrictions All About Jazz praised Iris’ “combination of sophistication, maturity and originality.” She followed that recording with Storyteller, also self-produced, which hit the top of the 2019 Jazz Week charts. Critic Brad Cohan called her “an unsung hero of New York jazz,” and like many bass players, she continues to fly under the radar because she is so willing the share the spotlight with fellow musicians. She leads a quintet comprised of trumpeter Dave Smith, saxophonist Jeremy Powell, pianist Ben Rosenblum, and drummer Rodrigo Recabarren. DJS

OLLI SOIKKELI

THE SIDE DOOR / MAY 13; BARBÈS / MAY 14

Finnish Guitarist Olli Soikkeli has lived in New York for less than a decade. Despite his youth, he has already earned raves from critics and fans around the world. The Wall Street Journal praised his “astonishing dexterity and speed” and called him “among the worthiest current day successors to the legacy of the great Django.” And that is no surprise because Olli was introduced to Django Reinhardt and gypsy jazz when he was young. He has become one of its highly regarded devotees. He has played with Bucky Pizzarelli, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tommy Emmanuel, Cyrille Aimée and Marian Petruscu in venues such as Birdland, Blue Note and Lincoln Center. You can hear his trio with bassist Paul Sikivie and drummer Ben Zweig in either N.Y. or Conn. DJS

JEFF HAMILTON

DIZZY’S CLUB / MAY 15

Drummer/bandleader Jeff Hamilton’s skill set has kept him in demand. Whether backing mainstays like bassist Ray Brown and singer Natalie Cole or leading his own groups, Jeff’s spirited style sets him apart from his contemporaries. Born in Ind., Jeff was influenced by the legendary drumming styles of Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, “Philly” Joe Jones and Shelly Manne. Jeff’s latest release is 2021’s Merry & Bright, with All About Jazz stating in their review that the album is “a charming showcase for Hamilton's superlative brush work and deft interplay by all hands.” Additionally, Jeff was the co-owner of Bosphorus Cymbals and has gone on to start his own cymbal company. For his performance at Dizzy’s Club, Jeff is joined by bassist Jon Hamar and drummer Tamir Hendelman. EW

CÉCILE MCLORIN SALVANT

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER / MAY 19-20

Ever since she won the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition, the Florida-born, Haitian-French vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant has reigned supreme as one of the most imaginative and evocative vocalists of her generation. A three-time Grammy winner and MacArthur Fellow, Cécile’s multilingual repertoire ranges from cabaret songs to Creole tunes. She returns to JALC with long-time partner pianist Sullivan Fortner, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, drummer Savannah Harris, and percussionist Weedie Braimah. They perform new music including selections from her latest album, Melusine, a haunting and hallucinatory collection of Francophone and Caribbean compositions sung in English, French, Kreyol and Occitan, an ancient language from the south of France. EH

JERRY WELDON

CAFÉ BOHEMIA / MAY 23

Jerry Weldon has carried on the tradition of the big toned, burly, muscular tenor saxophonist throughout his career, from his days at Rutgers when he moonlighted with organist Bobby Forrester on the soul jazz circuit, to his half decade playing Illinois Jacquet’s “Flying Home” solo every night with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. Jerry was fortunate to hook up with one of the very few big bands to emerge in the late 20th century, Harry Connick Jr.’s, as featured tenor soloist. And just last month he appeared with a memorial edition of the Lionel Hampton big band at a festival in Idaho. Jerry still loves the tenor and organ combo too, and has recorded several albums in that trio (with drums) format, one he’s bringing to this gig with organist Kyle Koehler and a drummer TBA. GK

and one of her many quartets consists of drummer Joe Strasser, tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon, and her husband, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli. The addition of guitarist Ed Cherry expands the group to a quintet. Finally, she performs in a duo with tenor saxophonist Erena Terakubo. “I’m living my dream,” Akiko declares.

Akiko's recordings as a leader include Sweet and Funky , Oriental Express , Sakura, and her tenth one, So Cute, So Bad, recorded at the Alvas Showroom in San Pedro, Calif., with West Coast guitarist Graham Dechter on standards like “The Lady is a Tramp,” Baby Face Willette’s organ classic “Face to Face,” the bossa nova-tinged “Tanabata,” and Akiko’s original composition “Pretty Please.” Akiko also was featured on Equal Time, a 2019 date with Graham and Jeff playing music of John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Johnny Mercer and Steve Allen.

Though she plays like she grew up in Newark or Philadelphia, Akiko’s jazz journey started in Osaka. “Organ was my first instrument,” Akiko remembers. “I started when I was three years old. Most of my friends started taking organ lessons at the same age, because Japanese houses are very small, and parents were afraid to buy a piano because it takes up more space than an organ.” It was a relative and teacher who exposed Akiko to jazz and the organ. “My grandmother was a huge jazz fan,” Akiko relates. “She was a fan of Toshiko. And when I was a high school student, my teacher recommended Jimmy Smith’s [album], The Cat, to me.” Akiko performed at the family church, playing standards like “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “The Breeze and I,” and “Fly Me to the Moon,” and she continued her studies at the Yamaha Institute.

JAPAN HAS GIVEN US MANY GREAT pianists over the years, from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Makoto Ozone to Junko Onishi and Hiromi. Just as her Japanese keyboard compatriots, the New York-based Hammond B-3 organist Akiko Tsuruga from Osaka seeks to establish herself on her instrument. Sonically speaking, Akiko embodies the best of its finest players with Jimmy Smith’s power, Richard “Groove” Holmes’ rhythm, and Lonnie Smith’s commitment to the blues.

A 2017 winner of Hot House’s Jazz Award for Best Organ, Akiko placed #1 in the organ category of the 2020 DownBeat International Critics Poll. Earlier, she won the Swing Journal magazine New Star Award in 2007. Akiko can lay claim to being “the hardest working organist in New York,” as evidenced by her work with her several bands. Drummer Jeff Hamilton — who says Akiko’s playing is “intense, positive, energetic and joyous” — and guitarist Steve Kovalcheck round out her trio;

Akiko came to New York in 1991 after she graduated from Osaka School of Music, at the suggestion of vocalist/drummer Grady Tate. “My playing completely changed when I came here,” Akiko says. “I played more shuffles and groovy things because people were dancing. And in Japan, we didn’t have that kind of culture. We’re much more quiet when we listen to music.” She paid her dues playing with veterans including Frank Wess, Jimmy Cobb, Houston Person, Jeremy Pelt and Lou Donaldson, who called her “queen of the organ” and made her the organist in his group in 2006, replacing the master and pioneer, Dr. Lonnie Smith. “I loved his playing,” Akiko reminisces. “I met [Lonnie] in Japan. And I was chasing him when I came to New York [lol], and sometimes we would practice together. And that’s how I learned to play!” For Akiko, working with Lou was also a special experience. “I learned so much playing with him from the continued on page 25

THE LATIN SIDE OF HOT HOUSE

Steven Oquendo Latin Jazz Orchestra:

Salsa Picante

STEVEN

OQUENDO IS UNAPOLO-

getic about calling his regular weekly gig at Mamajuana Café in The Bronx Salsa Tuesdays. “I know that my heroes — Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez and Ray Santos — preferred the term Afro-Cuban or AfroCaribbean to describe our music,” he says in a whisper-soft, melodic voice. Then, with a staccato laugh, he adds, “Think about it as pouring hot sauce on top of the beautiful music.” Steven knows all too well how to make that happen. He worked it all out, and his 19-piece Latin Jazz Orchestra (LJO) has been playing Salsa Tuesdays at the fabled club in The Bronx every week for a decade. Best of all, they have been performing for free.

With seductive magic, Steven and the LJO draw Latin music lovers of all ages and stripes onto dance floors. He reveals his secret happily. “We curate our repertoire in a special way,” he says. “What we want to do is to keep the spicy magic of the historic Palladium Ballroom alive forever,” he avers, referring to the iconic ballroom, a fixture in the Big Apple and especially riveting from 1948 onwards when the legendary bands of Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez and Machito held sway there before mambo, sadly, went out of fashion.

“Well,” Steven says, “The LJO is bringing that age-old and hot salsa craze back to life.” He continues with pride. “We are the only big band playing those same arrangements that once drove listeners and dancers crazy, exactly as in the heyday of Tito and Tito. Folks who have forgotten had better come on over to Dizzy’s Club this month,” he beckons with a laugh.

“My love affair with music began when I was 10. Being of Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage,” he explains, “I naturally gravitated towards the music of Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez. But as I studied formally — including Lehman College and the Manhattan School of Music — I discovered the storied history of what the Cubans and all the Caribbean Island people contributed to music, particularly Jazz.” Steven earned his Master’s in Music

from the latter institution, but he says that the best education comes from regular performances, honing his trumpet chops and fine-tuning those classic Palladium charts with members of the LJO.

His biography is impressive. Steven has played with luminaries from Juan Luis Guerra, Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Ruben Blades, Eddie Palmieri and Wynton Marsalis, the Machito Orchestra, Destiny’s Child, and Swizz Beatz. He founded the LJO in 2009 and thus began the big band adventure and a lifelong ambition of reviving the classic Afro-Caribbean dance and music forms. “We play the same classic [Ray Santos] charts, made famous by Tito and Tito, and Machito exactly as performed at the Palladium Ballroom — cha-cha, mambo, son-danzón, guaguancó. We are the only big band in town that plays this music.” Then, with a wink, he says, “Come on down. Guaranteed, you won’t hear another big band playing salsa picante like ours!”

Clear the floor! Steven Oquendo Latin Jazz Orchestra sets Dizzy’s Club aflame with the Music of Tito and Tito on May 4-7. His band can also be heard in the Bronx every other Tuesday at Mamajuana Café.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW

Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

In 1990, The Tonight Show trumpeter Doc Severinsen flew to Toronto. He had heard a recorded version of “Portrait of Jennie,” a flugelhorn number performed by Guido Basso with the Canadian big band orchestra Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass. Severinsen wanted to achieve Basso’s beautiful sound.

Basso had arranged to sell Doc a French Besson flugelhorn. Basso had four of them laid out on his pool table when Doc arrived. After sampling the instruments, Severinsen then began playing a trumpet, upon which Basso began opening all the windows in his living room. He later explained, “I wanted my neighbors to think it was me playing the trumpet!”

MAYS...continued from page 13 stood the musical mission.” The current trio on Autumn Serenade has a history that goes back almost 40 years, with Bill describing the group as "a continuation and representation of my growth as a player and composer.” For a long time, he had wanted to record an album organized musically around the season of autumn, with a quieter, more introspective approach than what he had done in the past. For his performance dates in May, expect to hear music written during the COVID lockdown, as well as pieces from the new album.

Among Bill’s other current musical activities are leading concerts on the history of jazz piano, as well as classical performances for two pianos with Mark Marineau and Russ Kassoff, in which he delves into music by Bartok, Ravel, Schumann, Mozart, Lutoslawski, John Adams and Samuel Barber.

Bill Mays brings his trio — Dean Johnson, bass and Ron Vincent, drums — to Maureen’s Jazz Cellar on May 12, Deer Head Inn on May 14, and Mezzrow on May 19-20.

TSURUGA...continued from page 19 bandstand,” Akiko recollects. “He took me all over the world, including my country, Japan.” She’s performed at the Tokyo Jazz Festival, Indonesia’s Java Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scott’s in London, and the Gouvy Jazz Festival in Belgium.

Big things are in store in the coming months for Akiko. Her trio will perform at the Jersey City Jazz Festival in June. She’s just finished recording a new album for the Steeplechase label, which contains six original compositions, and she will embark on a European tour with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on October 3. For this organist of Japanese descent, home is where the down beat is. “I love American music,” Akiko proudly states, “and I love playing real jazz with real musicians.”

Akiko Tsuruga’s Quintet with trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon, guitarist Ed Cherry, and drummer Joe Strasser perform at Smalls Jazz Club on May 12-13. She also brings her trio at Arthur Tavern on May 17 and Cellar Dog on May 29.
