WINNING SPINS
By George Kanzler
THE
FOUR-MEMBER BAND IS AN infinitely adaptable and malleable unit in jazz. It’s large enough for significant interaction, small enough for both comradery and the budgets of cozy clubs. The variety is impressive. In the mid-20th century, notable foursomes included Dave Brubeck’s, Gerry Mulligan’s, Thelonious Monk’s, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The two albums here, both led by reed players, offer very different spins on the formation and concept of such outfit. Alto saxophonist Jesse Davis brings us a very standard, working group, while clarinetist Anat Cohen presents a creatively adventurous quartetinho (little quartet).
Jesse Davis Live at Smalls Jazz Club, Jesse Davis (Cellar Music Group), is the second outing Jesse has recorded at the Greenwich Village hub. It comes roughly a decade after his first with the same title, but this time with a quartet instead of a quintet. Returning are pianist Spike Wilner and bassist Peter Washington, joined by drummer Joe Farnsworth. The repertoire is a mix of standards, jazz and American popular songbook, the kind of set you’d expect from a working band in a club.
Coming up through Ellis Marsalis’ New Orleans tutelage, Jesse has imbibed the virtues of swing and bop/hard bop fluency, combining them with an enticingly attractive, full-bodied tone and warm timbre, incorporating the best of swing era altos and Charlie Parker. The latter influence is evident in Jesse’s rendering of the Victor Herbert ballad “Street of Dreams” (in 4/4 not 3/4), full of Bird-like flourishes and arpeggiated runs. Conversely, his “These Foolish Things” shimmers with the lush contours of Ellingtonian Johnny Hodges.
The eight pieces here are admirably varied in tempo, rhythm and mood. AfroLatin beats accelerate Lee Morgan’s “Ceora” and Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale,” that last notable for a compellingly eccentric solo from Spike. Hard-bop drive animates Jimmy Heath’s “Gingerbread Boy,” while Joe’s sticks drive Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-a-ning” and churn up backbeats in “Juicy Lucy” (Horace Silver, composer). A highlight of the set is Tom McIntosh’s “Cup Bearers,” a virtual jazz standard recorded by Dizzy Gillespie, Tommy Flanagan and many others. Jesse’s solo finds strains of “The Song Is You” to quote,
in true bebop tradition.
Quartetinho, Anat Cohen (Anzic), is Anat’s first post-Covid release, following, and contrasting with, her three from the just-pre-pandemic, two from her big-bandadjacent Tentet, another a duet with pianist Fred Hersch. The title translates as “little quartet” and Anat, playing clarinet and bass clarinet, is joined by Vitor Gonçalves, piano, Fender Rhodes and accordion; Tal Mashiach, bass and acoustic guitar; and James Shipp, vibes, percussion and analog synthesizer. However, the dominant sounds of her bandmates are bass, vibes and accordion or piano.
If this album was a painting, it would be all pastels. Lush lyricism dictates the progression; many of the tracks move with slow, processional grace. “Baroquen Spirit,” the opener, barely emerges from its semi-rubato mist, created by vibes and legato accordion behind the depths of Anat’s bass clarinet. On her “Palhaçao,” her clarinet climbs from the low chalumeau register and weaves seductively with James’ vibes, then rises to join Vitor’s high piano tinkles. James’ arrangement of the Brazilian “Bao Tarde Povo,” in a baião duple rhythm, is the closest tune to funky as Vitor’s Fender Rhodes drives Anat’s high excursions.
Anat’s piping lead, on the 6/8 “Birdie,” is echoed by Vitor’s Fender Rhodes, followed by a perky clarinet solo and wafting Rhodes. Bass and low clarinet ebb, then swell to climax. Egberto Gismonti’s bossa standard, “Frevo,” is reimagined in sequences of bebop and jagged, Ornette Coleman-like passages and interplay. Swirling clarinet dominates Anat’s “Louisiana,” enlivened by a bright bass ostinato and playful vibes and piano. Tal’s acoustic guitar anchors “Vivi & Zaco,” the closing number, accordion and vibes cushioning a ruminative clarinet solo.
Jesse Davis with Spike Wilner, piano; Peter Washington, bass; and Joe Farnsworth, drums, celebrates the release of his CD Jesse Davis Live at Smalls Jazz Club on Feb. 6-7 at Smalls, he also brings his quartet at Mezzrow on Feb. 10-11 with Spike and Peter, and Billy Drummond on drums. Anat Cohen is joined by guitarist Marcello Gonçalves at Mezzrow on Feb. 8.

JAY LEONHART:
IN LOVE WITH LIFE IT SELF
By Raul D’Gama
WHENTHE YET-UNTITLED, REALlife book – subtlety hinted at by Jay Leonhart – is finally published, discerning bassists and countless musical cognoscenti are sure to be instantaneously seduced. The reason why is simply this: any book by the man with a quick smile and a quicker wit, celebrated composer, poet and raconteur, promises to pull back the curtain on a life lived. The really big reveal will surely divulge the secret of his fine art of bass-ism, and very possibly unveil one of the most fascinating lives ever lived in the realm of contemporary music.
There are not many human beings around today such as Jay. Sheila Jordan comes to mind because, like Sheila, Jay shares not only the vocalist’s passion for music, but he is in love with life itself. This is clear from the sheer outpouring of that love into everything he does. He could be composing a song, or playing one of his four magnificent contrabasses, pizzicato or con arco, with uncommon virtuosity. Or he could be crafting one of his impish poems to which he then writes swinging music, and then sings (or scats with liquid facility), or issues a narrative with rhythmic brevity, a puckish tale that could rival the fabled Aesop.
“I look at my life every day,” Jay reveals, “and by golly, I hear a song!” He stops and lets out loud a deep laugh with rumbling vibrato like the E1 string on his contrabass. “Somehow,” he adds, “there also always seems to be a story there.” The laughter continues. As if on cue he sings and he laughs and laughs as he sings. Suddenly, in real time, two classic songs come immediately to mind. The first is “Gasparo,” his song about the legendary 16th century violin and contrabass violinmaker Gasparo da Salò, who (as Jay tells it) struggled to get his violin to bellow in lower tones than the violin could possibly come up with. And so he built himself a bass violin with the deepest, most delicious-sounding tones he could issue. The fable is altogether more charming when Jay sings it on YouTube (on his website).
Then there’s “Dizzy,” the hilarious song about a “familiar legendary bebopper” with whom Jay shared many a stage, but who never seemed to remember that he and Jay ever played onstage together. Unlike Dizzy, a majority of the who’s who of jazz and classical music remembers Jay as one of the finest bassists and human beings whose company – and music – they treasured. Musicians like Duke Ellington;
vocalists from Judy Garland, Mel Tormé, Peggy Lee and Steely Dan to Luciano Pavarotti; pianists like Marian McPartland; trumpeter Roy Eldridge; drummers like Papa Jo Jones.
“I came to music playing banjo in a Dixieland band. Then I heard a contrabass and my jaw dropped. I knew that the bass was my forever instrument,” he sings, as if playing Romeo to an imaginary Juliet. “Ah! There’s a poem and a song there.” Jay knows this the moment he hears it. The poet and songwriter in him always seem to be at the ready, almost in tune – you would think – with every sunrise. He will sing about the politics of the day: “Joe Biden and I have a lot in common/We are both white and growing old/Both of us are reasonably intelligent/And I think similar values hold...” Or he will wistfully find Robert Frost a strange bedfellow: “Robert Frost did write in settings beautiful and rustic/he wrote of rolling hills and green terrain/while poor me I must do my writing in the chaos of the city/sometimes even on a subway train...”
“These are only some of my favorite things,” Jay says and sings, as he lets out a laugh. You listen, rapt, as Jay reels off inventions, dazzling with his extempore compositional skills. This sublime musicianship is something he inherited from his parents and now has passed down to his two prodigiously gifted children –daughter Carolyn, a superb vocalist after

VICKI BURNS
BIRDLAND THEATER / FEBRUARY 2
Vicki Burns is a veteran singer who stands out in several ways. Not only does Vicki excel with her warm, bright vocals, she also dives headfirst into challenging material, easily conquering tricky bop intervals and scatting up a storm. Vicki shines with her masterful interpretations of ballads, ranging from decades-old standards to a pair of Billy Strayhorn gems. Her latest CD is Lotus Blossom Days, which showcases her skills as a composer and lyricist. (She has written lyrics for other jazz classics, such as McCoy Tyner’s “Contemplation,” recorded by vocalist Tessa Souter.) For this Birdland set, Vicki is joined by pianist Art Hirahara and bassist Sam Bevan, both of whom appear on her CD, with the latter also writing the horn arrangements. KD
KRISTEN LEE SERGEANT
CHELSEA TABLE + STAGE / FEBRUARY
In the promo for Falling (Tiger Turn), vocalist Kristen Lee Sergeant says that more than an album, it is “a conceptual concert … a hybrid of a one-woman show and a jazz set.” And so it is as this talented singer draws on her theater experience for a performance that displays her songwriting skill. Broadway World wrote that Falling is “the musical equivalent to a Martha Graham dance concert,” and DownBeat praised her “gorgeous legit vocals.” She has been inspired by singing icons including Marilyn Maye, Dianne Reeves, Mark Murphy and Judy Garland, and her experience on the stage is evident. This show, billed as “Falling,” includes pianist Jeb Patton, bassist Hannah Marks, cellist Jody Redhage Ferber, soprano saxophonist Abdias Armenteros, and drummer Jay Sawyer. DJS
MIKE DIRUBBO
THE DJANGO / FEBRUARY 3
Mike DiRubbo’s distinctive sound and adventurous improvising make him one of the outstanding alto saxophonists of his generation. Mike was self-taught until he entered the Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford, to study with jazz master Jackie McLean. Since his move to New York City, Mike has recorded and performed with a bevy of greats and in-demand instrumentalists. His fresh approach to standards and jazz classics is noteworthy for his ability to tell a story in each solo, rather than simply show off his considerable technique. His focus on record dates in recent years has been on his challenging, inspired compositions that bring out the best from his supporting players. Mike’s quartet includes pianist Davis Whitfield, bassist Paul Gill, and drummer Anwar Marshall. KD
VIJAY IYER
MILLER THEATER / FEBRUARY 4
When one listens to the works of pianist/composer Vijay Iyer, it’s easy to hear that he is attempting to expand on the very definition of the “jazz musician.” Whether composing chamber music, performing in a jazz ensemble or teaching, Vijay is a musical polymath for the ages. When he released his debut album (1995’s Memorophilia), the jazz world was shaken with his supreme technique and easy synthesis of influences. Since then, Vijay has been a Doris Duke Performing Artist, has won a MacArthur Fellowship and numerous other accolades. For his performance at Miller Theater, Vijay is joined by bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Tyshawn Sorey – both powerhouses themselves – for an evening of brilliant music. EW
HENDRIK MEURKENS
JAZZ FORUM / FEBRUARY 5; MEZZROW / FEBRUARY 15
Hendrik Meurkens is equally at home playing Brazilian music and straight-ahead jazz on harmonica and vibes. While studying vibraphone at Berklee College of Music, he heard Toots Thielemans and was so inspired that he taught himself the harmonica. In the early 80s, he moved to Rio so he could immerse himself in the music and culture. The hard work paid off. JazzTimes called him “one of the world’s leading exponents of the jazz harmonica.” At the Jazz Forum, Hendrik plays Brazilian music with pianist Alon Yavnai, bassist Gili Lopes, and drummer Portinho. At Mezzrow, he performs straight-ahead jazz with a quartet comprised of pianist Steve Ash, bassist Chris Berger, and drummer Jason Tiemann. DJS

JOE’S PUB /
FEBRUARY 12
Vocalist Svetlana Shmulyian has received multiple master’s degrees and a PhD, displaying both her aptitude for mathematics and her much-praised musicianship. Moving from her home in Russia to New York almost 30 years ago, she earned a Master’s of Music at the Manhattan School of Music and has since garnered accolades from critics, audiences and fellow musicians for her absolutely engaging stage presence, her energetic and enchanting vocals, and her swinging musicianship. Will Friedwald of The Wall Street Journal praised her as an “exceptional vocalist and songwriter.” Entitled “Love Notes,” this show features Svetlana’s Big Band with trumpets Wayne Tucker, David Neves and Kal Ferretti, trombones Dave Gibson and Becca Patterson, and drummer Curtis Nowosad among the many fine players. NOAH PREMINGER
JAZZ ON MAIN / FEBRUARY 18; CAFÉ BOHEMIA / FEBRUARY 24-25
At the tender age of 36, tenor saxophonist Noah Preminger has already amassed an impressive resumé. Whether performing alongside trumpeter Dave Douglas, saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, or bassist John Patitucci, Noah has shown himself to be a precise and luminous talent. In addition to his performance and recording schedule, Noah has appointments at Longy School of Music at Bard College and The New School. On January 27, Noah released Preminger Plays Preminger (SteepleChase Records), which features arrangements from films by director Otto Preminger as well as four pieces that Noah scored for scenes in his movies. At Jazz on Main, Noah supports drummer Rob Garcia, and at Café Bohemia, he’s joined by the Max Light Group, with both gigs beautifully showcasing his gift. EW
GREGORY PORTER
NJPAC / FEBRUARY 18
The history of jazz has a plethora of vocalists who combine jazz with blues, gospel and soul. Gregory Porter is a brilliant example. With his warm baritone, Gregory’s musical lineage calls upon luminaries such as Nat King Cole, Ray Charles and Bill Withers. Since his debut album, Water, Gregory’s passionate delivery and gracious timbre has been met with critical acclaim. With two Grammy Awards (for 2014’s Liquid Spirit and 2017’s Take Me To The Alley), three gold and one platinum album under his belt, Gregory will continue to be a shining beacon to every modern jazz vocalist. At NJPAC, Gregory includes selections from his most recent jazz recording, All Rise (Blue Note Records). For the Brooklynites, Gregory performs at Kings Theater on Feb. 11 with special guest Jazzmeia Horn. EW
PHILIP HARPER
DIZZY’S CLUB / FEBRUARY 25
Trumpeter Philip Harper was in his twenties in the late 1980s when he emerged on the jazz scene, first with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and then (1988-93) with the popular neo-hard-bop band The Harper Brothers, co-led by his brother, drummer Winard Harper. His style is an approach modeled on both entertainer/trumpeters like Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong – Philip also sings, in a conspiratorially gruff voice – and to later trumpeters who emphasized lyricism and warmth over bravura technique, such as Kenny Dorham and Lee Morgan. He favors mid-tempos, often slowing down bebop barnburners to a fast heartbeat; and he is a master of mutes, the sound more resonant because of his burnished vibrato. He brings his PHAM Experience quintet to this gig, with Bernell Jones II, tenor sax; Jordan Williams, piano; Jason Maximo Clotter, bass; and Curtis Nowosad, drums. GK
JAMES CARTER
BIRDLAND / FEBRUARY 28-MARCH 4
Although he commands a range of reeds from bass clarinet to the family of saxophones, James Carter has honed in on the tenor sax in the last decade. His inspirations vary from swing era greats like Ben Webster, Herschel Evans and Don Byas, to bop and post-bop titans such as Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp and Gene Ammons. James is a visceral player, who can burst with macho bravura, but he’s also capable of wearing his heart on his sleeve on ballads, wringing out every ounce of their lyricism. A consistently questing musician who constantly changes his approach, James brings his Elektrik Outlet band to this gig, dubbed “Lookin’ at the Lock: Music of Eddie Lockjaw Davis,” adding electronics to his tenor. Joining him are Gerald Gibbs, electric keyboards; Ralphe Armstrong, electric bass; and Alex White, drums. GK

ANTONIO CIACCA:
UNIQUE SONGS IN HIS HEART
By Don Jay Smith
like. “Some of the younger listeners don’t know all of the songs, and even may request a song like ‘Piano Man,’ but I politely tell them ‘No’ because I want them to learn the great history of this music.
And Antonio never stops learning. Born in Germany and raised in Italy, he studied piano as a child, but was most passionate about soccer. However, a serious injury caused him to abandon those dreams and return his attention to music. After earning a degree from the Bologna Conservatory, he decided to move to the States.
“I came to this country in 1983,” he continues, “and moved to Detroit which had a major impact on my approach to music. There I studied with Kenny Barron and got to listen to so many great musicians.”
Another master who had an important influence on Antonio was Barry Harris, also from Detroit. “Additionally, I became a devoted follower of Barry Harris,” he says. “That really got me on the road to jazz and only enhanced my desire to learn all about this great music.”
Antonio began his career as a sideman, working with leading players such as Steve Grossman, Art Farmer, James Moody and Steve Lacy among others.
Moving to New York in the 90s, he befriended the great pianist Jaki Byard and studied with him. In fact, Antonio’s 1999 release, Hollis Avenue (YVP Music), pays homage to the legendary pianist who was murdered at the age of 76. Byard was known for an eclectic style, drawing on everything from stride to free jazz, an approach that heavily affected Antonio.
He teaches jazz history at Marymount Manhattan College where he constantly refers to great players from the past who are no longer well-known to younger artists. Names like Barney Bigard and Cootie Williams are dropped into his conversation as he speaks reverentially about music and jazz.
Of course, it is also no surprise to learn that Antonio wrote his doctoral dissertation on Duke Ellington. He has just earned a PhD/DMA from Stony Brook University, an accomplishment completed in 2022.
WHENANTONIO CIACCA STARTS
to play the piano at The Pierre Hotel, he draws on an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of jazz, and listeners are enthralled because he is so engaging as he plays songs they know.
“At The Pierre, I play the Great American Songbook,” explains Antonio, “including Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and even Burt Bacharach. Most of the people who come to the hotel know the songs and even the lyrics.”
Another highlight in 2022 came from the family of Bud Powell who called on Antonio for help.
“I was just appointed Artistic Director for the Bud Powell Centenary,” Antonio explains. “The celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth will be in 2024, and we are going to produce a documentary that focuses on his music. I also plan to produce, with some Powell scholars, the definitive transcriptions of his work.”
Antonio is always very busy. In addition to Marymount, he also teaches jazz compo-

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW
Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.
Jim Hall and I did a lot of laughing together. One day he told me and Dick Scott that he had found a new Armenian restaurant in the Village and took us there for dinner. A beautiful young woman was our waitress, Mary Barsamian, and Jim introduced us to her. "Bill Crow," she said. "Dick Scott. Jim Hall. Three guys with one-syllable names!" I guess that was rare among Armenians.
Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, while playing a run at the Black Hawk in San Francisco, were trying to outdo each other seeing who could get a parking spot closest to the club. One night after he arrived at the club, Dave looked out the window and saw Paul parking right across the street in an illegal space. As Paul walked in with a big smile on his face, Dave said, “You don’t win this one, Paul. You’re parked illegally in a police zone. Didn’t you see the sign that says SFPD? That stands for San Francisco Police Department.” Paul replied, “Oh, I thought it stood for Save For Paul Desmond!”

Listening to Jay as songs tumble forth, you find yourself holding your breath for that promised book. For now, however, wait no longer to listen to this poet, musician and lover of life. Jay is one of the allstar artists that span generations at the Golden Anniversary of Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights in Jazz. The roster includes NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan and guitarists Gene Bertoncini and Russell Malone.
Jack avers that if there were an award for any musician who has most frequently graced the Highlights in Jazz stage, Jay (who has well over 30 appearances) would win it hands down. “Jay is so flexible,” he says. “He plays bass, he’s a singer, a songwriter, he’s even written a tune about me,” the producer says with a laugh. For the record, in that song, Jay anoints Jack as

sition and arranging at a conservatory in Italy, where he goes every couple of months, taking time to visit family. And he continues to compose and conduct classical music, primarily overseas but occasionally in this country as well.
Moreover, he finds time to sing. “I love sacred music and choral works,” he adds. “So I am a tenor with the Cecilia Chorus of New York, a widely recognized, 150-member chorus that performs two major concerts a year at Carnegie Hall.” The Cecilia Chorus played J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Magnificat in December.
Looking ahead, Antonio will be appearing on April 4 at Ornithology Jazz Club in Brooklyn with bassist Clovis Nicolas and drummer Peter Van Nostrand. Ornithology is a club that honors the influential saxophonist Charlie Parker (Bird) and is a headquarters of the nonprofit Gotham Yardbird Sanctuary.

Allan Harris, just back from gigs in Italy and Turkey, took the bandstand at Smoke Jazz Club on Jan. 18. During an enthusiastic set, Allan, a gifted raconteur, took time out to rib Philadelphia native bassist Nimrod Speaks, about his hometown NFL team. “That’s the sparrows, right?” He asked. “No? Oh, the pigeons, right?” Landing on the Eagles, Allan proclaimed his love for bald eagles. Saxophonist Irwin Hall worked hard to contain his smile, and, from the daggers in the bassist’s eyes... well, you know what he was thinking.

Antonio is a talented pianist who, like his mentors, draws on the whole history of jazz. His compositions for jazz big band, orchestras, film soundtracks, ballet and chamber groups have been performed in prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. And now he has a doctorate in music. As long-time producer jazz Todd Barkan says, “Antonio Ciacca dances to the unique songs in his heart.”
Antonio Ciacca appears at Two E Bar in The Pierre Hotel on Feb. 18 and 25.
