EDITORIAL LETTER

HOTEP,

Solidarity and Communication: A focus on interactions in our community.

he seen and the unseen presents a twofold tie within the laws of the universe as correspondence. Our ancestors’ answer for illumination is for one to Know-Thyself and the twofold tie may assist in a concrete decision for the future. A strategic change in the unknown future depends on past decisions unless

we change our present position. What may be the right strategy in one circumstance may require an altogether different game-plan in another circumstance, hence the phrase, “Shoe on the other foot”. You must place yourself in the future to project the outcome of positive change while in the present. The laws of the universe in relationships are always at

play like the planets that revolve around the sun in our solar system. Duality within the universal atmosphere is the basis of As Above, So Below. Therefore, the sun will not exist without the moon. Furthermore, there can be no heat without cold, nor a negative without a positive. Finding your balance is the twofold theme consistent in all individuals and relationships in nature. However, the free will to

chart your way through this life will always require the tools for inner man (Spirit Man and Woman) to evolve to his highest virtue. Consequently, next time you start to build anything study yourself and remember the twofold bond that binds the seen and unseen. Peace and Black Love

UNEQUAL JUSTICE

THE COSBY SHOW The verdict is in! Is sending Bill Cosby to jail at 83 justice? Or just a message?

W

e just watched the most publicized modern- day lynching of our time. This is America; Bill was caught slippin’ up; playing the locker room good ole-boy game. Only difference between Bill and everybody else is, Bill is black and was sentenced to prison and his legacy tarnished. Am I excusing the behavior Bill Cosby admitted to? Of course not! Anyone that sexually violates or degrades another person should face any and all consequences. However, the scales of justice are unbalanced and

Today, let us balance the scales of justice! Order in the court! All rise. The Court of Ig’nant Negro News is now in session, the Honorable Judge Ig’nant Negro is now presiding. ur African ancestors lived life with a greater sense of balance and harmony between men and women. They compliment by design. Both men and women received accolades

and notoriety in various areas of their relationships. So what happened? The problem started when we began to adopt the European mindset. From the moment the slave ships arrived on African

shores; we have been under constant attack. We have been programmed by Europeans who have looked to dominate and control others, and by European women considered to be “independent”, aggressive and assertive. At the onset of slavery Black men and women were set in opposition to each other. A culturally induced vulnerability has left us hesitant and fearful of hurt or danger, especially in romantic relationships. Many of us rely solely

on our instincts for security. This mentality is destructive to our community. The differences in communication styles between Black men and women is a European learned behavior that has us working against each other, rather than us working with each other. We must unlearn this mentality. Be open and honest with each other and as a people - grow in love. Literal Substance Editorial

REAL TALK

Relating for the Culture: Black People Need Black People.

T

he ways in which we all relate has shifted over time. Continual advances in technology, app developments and dreams fulfilled for the next go-to spot, allow us to connect and disconnect with each other rather easily, at the click of a button. Has this “ease” altered our human experience? Part of our original makeup as Black people is to fully submerge ourselves in the collective or tribe. We yearned to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. We communed with one another. Black people living in America, have somewhat lost that original touch. Community was necessary in our historic times and is still relevant today. Maybe even more. Therapy has become a thing now. Never

before have Black people discussed mental wellness with such openness like we are now. We live in an era where we need one another on an emotional, spiritual and physical level. No one can understand the plight of us, like us. Right now, activism reigns high in many forms and for that, Black people are seemingly coming together. In times of crisis, we stand in solidarity. On matters in the pubic eye, we gather in the name of Black Twitter, form a consensus and rule on whether to cancel an individual or grant them access to the annual family reunion. To achieve wealth, economic advancement, and to circulate our dollars, again we rise. However, on an up-close and personal level, do we gather the same? Someone could have 2500 followers on Instagram

or Twitter, but how many of them would they have contact with should the internet vanish? How many of those followers could they call on to help them in a time of need or simply to come over for dinner? Do people even still “have dinner”? Could you talk to at least 50% of your following, tell them what’s on your mind, and not be ashamed? Our mental health depends on these kinds of connections. Months like these when the temperature drops and the sun reveals itself a lot less are known to drive many of us into a temporary depression. It’s important to create healthy and sustainable relationships in which we can support each other. Text less and call more. Plan a time for group outings and actually show up. Indulge in selfcare with those you love. When you connect with someone new, actually connect! It’s time we become more intentional with our words and follow them up with action. Written By:

FEATURE STORY

SPIRITUALLY DEFINING THE WORD HOTEP “Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace.” Buddha As we all know, words have infinite power. It comes as no surprise that the word “spell” is both used to define the arrangmemts of letters to form words, as well as rituals for intended purposes. Since this is my first article post here on the HOTEP platform, I felt it was fitting to define its themed word from a spiritual perspective…

H

– the eighth letter of the standard alphabet. 8 is the number of infinite value. Its scribing has no beginning or ending point. In the spirit of Ifa, this letter vibrates on Obatala energy. It represents the Universal Vision of material here on Earth, perhaps something like the mainfestation of God/ ess’s kingdom here in this space and time, little by little restoring abundance as it was.

O

–the fifiteenth letter. Vibrating on a six in numerology…and Sango in Orisa vibration…Esu twice. Its scribing, like the 8 never ends. The O also represents the womb, the opening that births all, and the eye, the window to the soul. The O serves as the portal to transcend, only for the strongest, of course.

7

HOTEP MAGA Z I N E • OCT OB ER 2 0 1 8

T E P

– alphabet number 20. Spiritual number 2….The duality shape on a stake. Esu’s vibration entirely, as the T represents the constant crossroads. Crossroads between what, you might ask? Well, all have their own extremes of sun and shadow qualities…The T is just the reminder. – Letter number 5. Osun vibe, oh yes…but that’s not all. This letter vibrates on embracing the freedom of change, and the strength to let things go after a period of analysis.

-letter number 16….spiritual number 7….a half circle on a stake forms this letter. The power of this letter is a tricky one. It represents karmic debt and the power to gain victory over. It represents insight, which is all empowering. All of these letters combine to form the word HOTEP, and ancient Egyptian term meaning “to be at peace.” May it truly be lived by those who speak and vibrate on this word. Ase!

You are sentenced to 5 to 10 years in a federal prison where someone will put their chocolatey hands around your mouth. NEXT CASE! Case #666666 in the matter of The People vs. The Catholic Church of Pennsylvania please step forward. Bishops and other leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania covered up child sexual abuse by more than 300 priests over a period of 70 years, persuading victims not to report the abuse and law enforcement not to investigate it. I sentence the entire church to death by hanging. Court is in recess and will return after lunch to sentence Charlie Sheen for knowingly utilizing a diseased penis and

pedophilia behavior; Harvey Weinstein for having sex with his underage boys, Kevin Spacey for sexual misconduct and claiming gay as a defense, and Bill O’ Reily for dishing out over $13 million to silence his accusers.

H OTEP MA GAZ I N E • OC T OB ER 2 0 1 8

Again, no one is defending Bill Cosby for slipping 1970’s X-O’s in the chocolate pudding pops to get his freak on. The moral is to prosecute “equally” - everyone who has committed these crimes. You have to wonder; Why are they all free and Bill

Cosby is in jail? Why aren’t there any catholic priest in jail? Justice should be distributed evenly, BUT This is America…. Don’t be caught slippin’ up! Literal Substance Editorial
