EDITORIAL LETTER

HOTEP,

This edition is dedicated to preserving and cultivating the essence of black cultural awareness. We must mold ourselves to be forwardly health conscious and readily available for service to our community - ASE

Staying Grounded in the Heavens: A focus on health and service to others.

A

merica has fostered an unnatural “me first” epidemic that has matriculated into our community. Believe it or not, there was a time when it was natural for our community to actually “commune” with one another. We took care of each other. We were neighbors, friends,

co-workers and often strangers, all fixed on the goal of total liberation from oppression. As integration for profit began to take effect in America, our brothers and sisters took aim at removing themselves from conditions in which they thrived; and delivering themselves into the snarls and pitfalls of free capitalism, all for the idea

of equality. This was of course a farce, and the grass indeed was not greener on the other side. So here we are, selfish and still looking to others for healing. It’s time we take care of ourselves. We are a people generationally plagued with aggression, stress, illness and disease as a result of our environment and health

choices. We are the light of the earth. It is our universal duty to ensure health and prosperity for future generations. It is up to us alone to change our conditions. As we embark onto a new horizon, let us honor our roots and begin to love and service one another with reverence and compassion! Peace and Black Love

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

STRESS IN OUR COMMUNITY Stress is one of the top causes of death in the Black community.

O

ur stress levels are the highest due to the contributing factors that negatively affect our circumstances of living. The constant brutality by the system through inferior legislation, discrimination, police brutality and limited access to healthier foods

5

plays a significant part in increased stress. African Americans have health that is the worse overall than the health of other ethnic groups. According to the American Psychological Association Studies examining the role of social and biological stress on health

HOTEP MAGA Z I N E • A U GU S T 2 0 1 8

suggests a link between socioeconomic status and ethnic disparities in stress and health (Warnecke et al, 2008). Moreover, health disparities may stem from economic determinants, education, geography and neighborhood, environment, lower-quality care, inadequate access to care, inability to navigate the system, provider ignorance/bias and/or stress (Bahls, 2011).

STRESS RELATEDBEHAVIORS

Furthermore, some of the major attributes explained by the American Psychological Association Studies showed that stress may also play a role in physical health disparities

by affecting behavior. High levels of stress have been consistently associated with a wide variety of negative health behaviors, including smoking, drinking, drug use and physical inactivity. These behaviors and their outcomes (e.g., obesity) are closely linked to the onset and course of many diseases, including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline later in life, according to the report. Despite all the statistics, our communities have always been able to overcome any challenge thrown at us whether it be slavery, Jim Continued on Page 8

COVER STORY

STAYING GROUNDED IN THE HEAVENS Exploring the relation between our physical existence and cosmic activity. Discover how our mind and bodies are attuned to the activities and frequencies in the cosmic universe.

W

hen life gets hectic, most have been taught to believe that its all in His plan and it’s a sign that your ”breakthrough” is coming. You will be delivered from bondage, that new house, that new job – in the name of Jesus! I command it! With that being said, what are your options beyond steadfast waiting? Its time we realize that we can put all our eggs in one Easter basket. The original purpose of religion was to bring sacredness back to life. There was a time when

6

human beings lived moment-to-moment in the presence of the sacred. Religion was unnecessary. There was no separation between spirituality and life, no distinction between the sacred and the mundane, no division of the Godly and the worldly. When we lost the sense of sacredness, we needed religion to bring us back to it. Our ancestors understood that we possess a naturally divine connection to the cosmic universe and planet earth. “Religion,” after all, means “that which renews our connection.”

Your mood, energy level and mental clarity are all connected to the universe. Practicing aspects of traditional worship is valuable. The mental focus of prayer and the collective energy of a congregation are powerful. The hard part

comes in after the euphoria of worship wears off.

CHECK YOUR CHART

Each person on this planet was birthed at a precise location and time on the planet. At that very same time the planets were aligned to influence your experience while on this physical plane. This astrological formation is referenced in the form of

1 MIND THE STARS Pay close attention to the activity in the heavens, moon cycles, comets, eclipse, planets and orbital paths.

2 KNOW THE SIGNS Take time to study and develop a robust knowledge of all zodiac traits and characteristics.

3 MEDITATE Your mind and body are constantly bombarded with distractions that pollute and destroy, - quiet your mind!

a Natal Chart. Your natal chart serves as a reference guide to the overall experiences you will encounter while on this planet. There are no exact details in a natal chart, just reasonable estimates of calm and rocky periods within your life.

PROBLEMS AT WORK

Say you get into it with your coworker. The two of

7

you may have an otherwise good working relationship, but today you were just in a mood. Most of the time this friction is a result of cosmic activity. There could be turmoil in your zodiac house with theirs. Your house may be in retrograde. Anything! If all of this sounds foreign to you; no worries, this is just an introduction to the

concept. The rest of you know exactly what I am talking about.

COSMIC ACTIVITY DIRECTLY AFFECTS YOUR EXPERIENCE HERE ON THE PLANET

The teachings of religion are based in the activities in the Heavens. The authors used metaphor express what they were seeing in the stars. These principles

are not to be taken literally, but used as guidance throughout life, to help us recall our sacred sense. The natural stars and heavenly cosmic bodies are to be used in the same way. That’s what they are here for. Written By

The human family is made up of one race divided into nations of families

composed of customs, creeds, flag, principles, land and religion just to name a few. We are a people who have fallen asleep and have forgotten our nobility in the midst of the 21st Century. Moorish culture is expressed through its superior architecture with a legacy that links all “African American” descendants in the Northern Hemisphere together as one people since the ancient times of empires such as the Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Sumerians, Egyptians, Olmecs down to the Ottoman Empire. THE WAY OF THE MOOR Stress Relief Vacation in the Big Easy: The Moor Hotel in New Orleans

E

ntrepreneurs Damon Lawrence and Marcus Carey have created an environment of home, culture and love with the first boutique hotel “The Moor” in New Orleans.

Moreover, Howard University also covered the story by stating “It is the first Homage Hostel, also known as a boutique home, which differentiates itself from a hotel and a bed and breakfast.

This hotel pays homage to the Moorish culture with fantastic architecture, sculptures and breathtaking paintings of Moorish peoples. Lawrence an Alumni from the prestigious HBCU, Howard University stated in The ShadeRoom that, “At the Moor, we decided to pay homage to Moorish culture mainly based on the architecture.

The Moor, launched on July 1, 2018, was developed on the property of a Spanishcolonial home built in 1921. It is a brand new four-unit hostel (hotel) with an African and Moroccan vibe in the Mid-city District of New Orleans on the historic Canal Street.

The property naturally has beautiful archways and carved wood work that we really wanted to play up with our design aesthetic. Thus, the name felt fitting for us. When we think about the Moors we think about their impact globally and it coincides with the multi-cultural history of New Orleans perfectly.” The company started this venture as Homage Hospitality organized in Oakland, CA.

9

Each of the four units feature living spaces, bedrooms, and kitchenettes. The design direction and property architecture are inspired by the Moors of North Africa’s influence around the world and pays homage to the melting pot heritage of New Orleans, one of America’s truly global cities.
