This edition is dedicated to our courageous brothers and sisters who served honorably in the defense of the civil freedoms and liberties that are often taken for granted. ASE
Celebrating Black Patriots
O
ur nation does so much to celebrate and honor soldiers who risk their lives on the battlefield but historically, Black veterans were more likely to be attacked for their service, rather than honored for it. To be a soldier is to lay claim to the reverence that America sets aside for its former warriors, yet Black
soldiers return home from war only infuriated and terrified White America. At the onset of the Civil War, the Union didn’t allow Black soldiers to fight at all. There was concern over the morale of White soldiers’ and the respect that Black soldiers would feel entitled to when the war ended. As death tolls increased, the Union relented; and
by the end of the war, almost 200,000 Black men had enlisted. When WWI started, Blacks debated the merits of fighting for a country that denies them functional citizenship, yet 380,000 enlisted in the segregated Army. Many hoped that their service would increase the standing of Blacks at home, but to White America, Black soldiers serving on the
front-line undercut their claims of racial superiority, which their lives and economies were built on. Let the record show that Black servicemen and women have built America (for Free), fought in its wars, bled on the battlefield and even died for this country. Peace and Black Love

He beat off a German attack with grenades, his rifle, a knife and finally, his bare hands to protect a fellow soldier, Needham Roberts and his unit, the “Harlem Hellfighters.”
Needham Roberts was an American soldier in the Harlem Hellfighters and recipient of the Purple Heart and the Croix de Guerre for his valor during World War I.
Freddie Stowers was a corporal in the United States Army and the first African American to be awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in WWI. Watch Video

R
acism is damn near a pillar of society in America. Many of our loved ones have fought, bled and died for this country, and yet they go unrecognized for their service due to the color of their skin. Black soldiers who served in WWI believed that racial discrimination would dissipate once they returned home, but found out that wasn’t the case. In fact, racism and discrimination grew worse

leading up to WWII. Due to White discrimination of Black soldiers, Black troops were often sent to fill vacancies in the French armies. The French held Black soldiers in high regard, which made for a better success rate and a more positive environment when working together. This renewed patriotism led to the creation of the 369th Infantry Regiment. The 369th was nicknamed the Black Rattlers. The monacor “Men of Bronze” was given to
them by the French and the Germans called them “Hell Fighters”. During WWI, the 369th spent 191 days in front line trenches, more than any other American unit in the war. Upon arriving in Europe, the 369th Infantry Regiment became part of the 93rd Division (Provisional), but continued training under French command. The regiment finally received Continued on Page 9

FAKE PATRIOTS
Aside from creating this economic superpower and protecting it more than anyone else, black America is the group most responsible for making America live up to the promise of “liberty and justice for all.” They are the ones who screamed at America to do better.
Beware of the people who wrap themselves in the red-white-andblue cloth of patriotism. They called King a communist and painted the civil rights movement as “un-American.” They want comfort, not progress. They are the opposite of patriotic.
It was the white fake “patriots” who blasted fire hoses and sicked dogs on peaceful protesters. It was the fake patriots talking about “American values” and “respect” who threw Molotov cocktails on to the buses of the Freedom Riders. They are the real terrorist!

he problem with American patriotism is that it ignores the fact that America was and is a colonial state. Colonial powers are violent and racist by their very nature. America’s military is not a protector of peace. It is an enforcer of colonialism. Our brothers and sisters have died in America’s wars but do not fully experience the freedom that comes with that sacrifice the same way white people do. Patriotism was never designed to be a racially equitable experience. America didn’t become an economic international superpower because this country had great ideas or people who worked hard. Any qualified economist or historian will tell you that the fuel that catapulted the United States from a brandnew country into one of the largest economies in the world was cotton. By 1860, cotton was $192 million of America’s $316 million in exports, and slave states produced 60 percent

of the cotton for the entire world. Because of the free labor, that money propelled the U.S. into becoming a dominant economic force, and the U.S. never looked back. Slave labor is directly responsible for why people call this the greatest country in the world. Wake Up! An overwhelming number of Blacks have served in every war since the U.S. military was
integrated in 1948. According to Pew Research, in 2015, 19 percent of active-duty men and women in the military were African American, while making up 13 percent of the U.S. population. We fought, bled and died for this land more than any other race. Lay claim to it! Literal Substance Editorial

T
he so called “Black” man and woman today are not understanding that this American flag belongs to our ancestors as well for the blood and sweat shed through the years. WWII was a war that saw great moors participate with the highest value of patriotism while returning home still to be classified as a Negro. As a result, we celebrate our patriots in salute by recognizing our own such as a navy ship’s cook, Petty Officer Third Class Doris Miller, from Waco, Texas, who
served aboard the USS West Virginia at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. He was awarded the Navy Cross by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, from Fredericksburg, Texas. According to the Pacific War Museum his Navy citation states the following:
“...distinguished devotion to duty, extraordinary courage and disregard of his personal safety during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. While at the side of his Captain on the bridge, Miller despite enemy strafing and bombing, and in the face of serious fire, assisted in moving his Captain,

Americans – Corporal Henry Johnson and Private Needham Roberts – to be awarded the coveted French Croix de Guerre. After considerable effort, the 369th was welcomed home with a parade in February 1919 and reabsorbed into the National Guard. The
