PROGRAMME NOTES 演出介紹
Within a year of its publication in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby about aspiration and disillusionment, romantic hope and moral failing, set against the landscape of wealth and idle dissipation, captured the imagination of directors of stage and film as well as readers. Later adaptations followed: a 1974 movie starred Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, with Sam Waterston as Nick Carraway. Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire, then introduced the story to a new generation. In both, music figured prominently. Music is key in Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age novel with references to popular hits of the day such as Ain’t We Got Fun, The Sheik of Araby, and Beale Street Blues. Descriptive passages are cast in musical terms, one of the most well-known being Carraway’s description of Daisy Buchanan’s “low, thrilling voice” that could convey a singular, irresistible “arrangement of musical notes.” Septime Webre, artistic director of the Hong Kong Ballet and choreographer of The Great Gatsby, has created a work that blends music, drama, spectacular design, ballet, 1920’s social dance, the Charleston, Lindy Hop, among others, in a way that uniquely illuminates Fitzgerald’s love story. The poetic quality of Fitzgerald’s writing and the involved plot requires innovative staging. In Webre’s scenario, the role of Carraway, the story’s narrator, is ingeniously cast with an actor and a dancer. At times, they move in tandem. At other moments, Nick, the actor, steps forward to provide brief, expository monologues that streamline the plot. Webre has gathered an exceptional group of creative collaborators. Jazz performer and composer Billy Novick produced the ballet’s vivacious score, incorporating period songs such as the expressive What’ll I Do and frankly suggestive blues number I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl into an idiomatic musical score. The jazzy musical tapestry is performed by Novick’s seven-man band of virtuosos, the Blues Syncopators. Two vocalists, blues singer E. Faye Butler and singing actor James Seol, take centerstage as entertainers in lavish parties at Gatsby’s mansion.

Tim Yip, academy award-winning art director of the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, has created the production’s evocative sets and opulent costumes. The art deco gate of Gatsby’s estate opens to reveal the splendor of the mansion’s interiors, the protagonist’s life, contrasting with those on the outside, a reflection of a changing society. Shifting designs create stage pictures that variously represent a Long Island beach, New York apartment, Gatsby’s mansion, the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. A moving ceiling unit incorporates an LED wall for striking video projections, alternatively representative and abstract, to dazzling effect. More than 200 costumes depict stockbrokers, sailors, flappers, a starlette, butlers, maids, a host of revelers. Women’s dresses are reminiscent of Coco Chanel’s unisex silhouette, embellished with shimmering beading and sequins. One of Webre’s creative interests has been the translation of American literature into narrative ballet. Webre says, “The cultural milieu—intellectual and artistic creativity, cosmopolitan nature, glamour, and energy—that gave birth to Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby characterized 1920’s New York and Paris and, half a world away, the Shanghai of the 1920’s and 1930’s. In turn, Shanghai represented a link to Hong Kong, whose culture would be influenced by Shanghainese immigration in the 1950’s and 1960’s.” In the 1920’s, New York, Paris, Shanghai emerged as exemplars of the modern, affluent metropolis, marking the eventual decline of social and moral values in an era of unprecedented prosperity and excess—Ain’t We Got Fun.

ACT I 第一幕
SCENE I – OUTSIDE GATSBY’S MANSION ON LONG ISLAND’S WEST EGG
第一場：在長島的西蛋蓋茨比大宅之外 Jay Gatsby gazes longingly across the bay at the flashing green light which marks Daisy Buchanan’s home, yearning for the love they once shared. Nick Carraway arrives at his rented bungalow on the rambling Gatsby estate as one of Gatsby’s raucous parties spills across the lawn. 傑．蓋 茨比情 深 眺 望長 島海灣，對岸 綠 光 閃 爍 之 處 是 黛 西．布 坎 南的家，憶 盼 着 他 們曾經 擁 有過的愛情。尼克．卡拉威來到他租用的平房， 平房坐 落於漫無邊際的蓋 茨比 莊園，草 坪上 盡 是參加蓋 茨比 派 對的 賓客，好不 喧鬧。

Nick has been invited to his cousin Daisy’s house. He renews his acquaintance with her husband, Tom, whom he knew briefly at Yale, and meets their friend Jordan Baker, a noted professional golfer. Their merriment is interrupted by a phone call from Tom’s mistress, Myrtle.
SCENE III – THE VALLEY OF ASHES 第三場：灰燼谷
On a trip to New York City, Tom and Nick stop in the squalid Valley of Ashes, a desolate strip of land between West Egg and New York. There, Nick meets Tom’s mistress Myrtle and her unsuspecting husband, George Wilson. Revelers gather at another of Gatsby’s allnight summer parties. Jordan and Nick arrive. Jordan introduces Nick to their host, and Gatsby asks Nick to arrange for an afternoon tea with Daisy. 眾人在蓋茨比的另一 個夏夜派 對上徹夜狂歡。 佐 敦 和 尼 克 到 臨，佐 敦 向 主 人 家 蓋 茨 比 介 紹 尼克，蓋 茨比 要求 尼克 安 排 約 會 黛 西，一 起 共 晉下午 茶。

The next day, Daisy is expected for tea, and Gatsby’s staff invades Nick’s home to make preparations for her arrival. Gatsby has lived for this moment. He waits tensely. When Daisy finally arrives, Gatsby make a desperate bid to revive their love by sharing his treasures with her. He has collected the trappings of wealth for one reason—to win her love. But ‘rich girls don’t marry poor boys,’ and when Gatsby went off to war, she married the wealthy playboy Tom Buchanan. Tom and Daisy, accompanied by Jordan and Nick, attend one of Gatsby’s revelries. Tom, absorbed in his flirtations with the lively girls present, does not see Daisy and Gatsby steal a rapturous moment. 湯 姆 和黛 西在佐 敦 和尼克 的 陪 同下參加了蓋 茨 比 的 狂 歡 派 對，湯 姆 沉 醉 於 與 活 潑 女 孩 的 調 情之中，並 未留意到黛西和蓋 茨比在偷情。

In a heated moment, Gatsby confronts Tom with his and Daisy’s affair. Gatsby pleads with Daisy to say she never loved Tom, but he asks too much of her, and Daisy cannot bring herself to do that. She escapes into the road and is killed by Gatsby’s speeding car, driven by Daisy. George sees Gatsby and assumes he killed Myrtle. Billy Novick is a musician, performer, arranger and composer whose soulful and lyrical jazz clarinet and sax playing have impressed audiences and critics worldwide. His versatility makes him a highly sought-after sideman in many different music genres. He has been featured on over 350 recordings, film and TV soundtracks and has released seventeen recordings as a bandleader. Novick has composed 15 scores for modern dance and two full-length ballets, including The Great Gatsby. Billy Chan graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) as a theatre lighting design major. Since 1997, he has collaborated with Edward Lam Dance Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Dionysus Contemporary Theatre, Chung Ying Theatre, Théâtre de la Feuille, Trinity Theatre, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and Hong Kong Dance Company, in addition to pop concerts. He was recently awarded the Best Lighting Design at the 31st Hong Kong Drama Awards for We Are Gay by HKAF in 2023. His other accolades include Best Stage Art of the Year (Lighting Design) at the 2017 Shanghai Jing’an Modern Drama Valley One Drama Awards, Best Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards (2008 and 2019) and Outstanding Lighting Design at the 2019 Hong Kong Dance Awards. Academy Award Winner of Best Art Direction for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2001, Tim Yip is a world-renowned art director for stage and film and visual artist. Yip has collaborated with internationally acclaimed film directors including John Woo, Ang Lee and Tsai Ming Liang, as well as theatrical icons Akram Khan, Robert Wilson and Franco Dragone, and major international companies such as English National Ballet, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, San Francisco Opera House, Palais de Chaillot, Opera-Comique Paris, Graz Opera House Austria, Beijing National Centre for the Performing Arts among many others. His works have been presented at prestigious arts festivals, museums and cultural venues worldwide.

Ruby Yau majored in theatre lighting technology at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. She is currently a stage lighting freelancer. 邱雅玉畢業於香港演藝學院舞台及製作藝術學院，獲藝術學士（榮譽）學位， 主修舞台燈光技術。現為自由身舞台工作者。
作為世界知名的電影與舞台美術指導、視覺藝術家、服裝設計師，葉錦添 不斷探索及介紹其「新東方主義」美學理念，詮釋古代文化對未來的啓示。 其創作游走於當代藝術、服裝、舞台、電影美術等多元領域。20 01年，葉 錦添以電影《臥虎藏龍》獲奧斯卡「最佳藝術指導」與英國電影學院「最佳 服裝設計」獎，為首位獲得以上殊榮的華人藝術家。

Tan-ki Wong graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and is currently a freelance dancer, choreographer, multimedia designer and dance teacher. He was a guest artist with Ballet Bremerhaven in Germany and also co-founded Neo Dance HK. Wong’s accolades include the male solo third prize at the 2012 IDO World Tap Dance Championships, 2011 Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance and 2014 Outstanding Achievement in Choreography awards at the Hong Kong Dance Awards and the Award for Young Artist in Dance at the 2014 Hong Kong Arts Development Awards. 王丹琦於 香港 演藝學院畢業，現為自由身舞者、編舞、多媒體設計師及 舞蹈導師。他曾於 德國巴馬海港舞團參與短 期演出，並為 Neo Dance HK 的創辦人之一。

The Blue Syncopators is the seven-piece group created specifically for performing The Great Gatsby ballet and is comprised of some of the finest traditional jazz musicians in the US. In 2010 The Washington Ballet commissioned Billy Novick to create a 1920’s period score for their original production of Septime Webre’s The Great Gatsby, which premiered at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It was phenomenally successful, selling out seven shows and garnering rave reviews. The band has performed the score over fifty times with various ballet companies and in concert as a standalone work.

香 港芭蕾舞團（港芭）以富香 港 獨 有魅力、非凡作品及超卓演繹享譽 國 際。舞 團自1979 年 以 來 不 斷 演 變，現已發展成為一 個朝氣蓬勃的 藝 術團體，擁有豐富的劇目及具前 瞻 性的社區拓展計劃，精益求精。 衛承天先生於2017年7月起擔任港 芭的 藝 術 總 監。 港 芭 擁 有 接 近 50 位 來自世界 不 同 地方的精英，包括來自香 港、中國 內地、亞洲地區、澳洲、新西蘭、歐 洲和北美等地，近年贏得海內外各 方支持和肯定。港芭劇目涵蓋多齣 重製的古典瑰寶、巴蘭欽的新古典 傑作、特別為舞團編創的長篇芭蕾 舞，以及屢獲殊榮的青少年系列製 作。港芭亦不時演出現今舞壇星級 編舞家 如羅 曼斯基、惠爾頓、麥葛 萊格、佩克、季利安、杜亞陶及奧喬 亞等的作品，以及港芭駐團編舞家 胡頌威、江上悠及其他香港新晉編 舞 家 的 新 作。 港芭曾踏足11個國家，進行近50次 巡 迴 演出，到訪 地方包括歐 洲、中 國內地及美國(雅各之枕舞蹈節、紐 約喬伊斯劇院、紐約市中心劇場及 享負 盛名的 秋 季 舞 蹈 藝 術 節 )。除 本 地 及 海 外 的 舞 台 演 出 外，港 芭 亦 全 力 推 行 全 港 性 的 社 區 項 目， 務 求 將 芭 蕾 舞 藝 術 帶 給 所有 普 羅 大 眾。港芭創作多套錄 像及影片， 於不 同 網 上平台播 放，累 積 逾 520 萬 觀 看 次 數，連 繫 世 界 各 地 的 芭 蕾舞 愛 好者。

SEPTIME WEBRE 衛承天
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, HONG KONG BALLET 香港芭蕾舞團藝術總監
Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US for six years. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation standing at the intersection of creativity and social impact. Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the quality and breadth of its work—both onstage and in its engagement and educational initiatives, with its annual budget growing over 500% during that time. In Hong Kong, Webre recently staged a pair of new productions for HKB: a Romeo + Juliet set in the early 1960’s Hong Kong, and The Nutcracker set in Hong Kong in the early 20 th century. In addition, he has staged a number of additional productions for HKB, including new productions of Giselle, ALICE (in wonderland), The Great Gatsby and Peter Pan. As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.

衛承天是國際著名芭蕾舞團總監、 編 舞 家、教 育 家 及 倡 導 者。他 曾 出任 華 盛 頓 芭 蕾 舞 團 藝 術 總 監 達 17 年，亦 曾 任 美 國 新 澤 西 普 林 斯 頓 美 國 劇 目芭 蕾 舞 團 藝 術 總 監， 並 於 2 0 17 年 7月加 入香 港 芭 蕾 舞 團 擔 任 藝 術 總 監。他 曾 是 美 國 華 盛 頓 一 基 金 會 H a l c yo n 的 藝 術 總 監，其宗旨為透 過 創意影 響 社會。 衛承天在任華盛頓芭蕾舞團期間， 舞團預 算大 增 5 0 0 %，並在 舞台製 作的規模和質素、專業舞蹈教學等 多個範疇上獲得前所未有的提升。 他近年為香港芭蕾舞團全新創作 包 括：以19 6 0 年 代 香 港 作 背 景 的 《羅密歐+茱麗葉》和以20世紀初 香 港 作 背景 的《 胡 桃 夾 子》。衛 承 天亦曾為香港芭蕾舞團製作《吉賽 爾》 、 《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》 、《 大亨 小 傳 》和《小 飛 俠 》等多 個 劇目。 作 為 一 位 舞 者，衛 承 天 曾 擔 任 多 齣 古 典 舞 劇 的 主 角 及 獨 舞，並 曾 出 演 夏 普、泰 勒 及 肯 寧 漢 等 編 舞 家的當代作品。他也曾任瓦爾納、 保 加 利 亞、伊斯 坦 堡、開 普敦、紐 約、首爾等地多個國際芭蕾舞比賽 的評審。他曾任「舞蹈/美國」的董 事 局 成 員，其 作 品 更 獲 得 多 項 榮 譽、資 助 及 獎 項。他 持 有 奧 斯 汀 德薩斯大學的歷史/法律學士學 位，是 一 個 熱 鬧 的 古 巴 裔 美 國 大 家 庭中 排 行第七 的兒子。
