The most famous of all Romantic ballets, Giselle is ballet’s great ghost story. First performed in 1841 in Paris, the ballet was originally choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot and starred Italian ballerina Carlotta Grisi. In 1884, ballet legend Marius Petipa reworked Giselle for the Mariinsky Theatre and then restaged it several times, adding new variations, music and changes to the dance of the willis, the ghosts of women who seek retribution beyond from the grave. Petipa’s influential Giselle eventually became the blueprint for most subsequent stagings.
Celebrating a simpler life, Romantic ballets intentionally contrasted sharply with works from the Age of Enlightenment, which celebrated Greek and Roman classical philosophies, the aristocracy and intellectual ideals emphasising reason and order.
In the 1830s, Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Robert le diable and August Bournonville’s La Sylphide popularized the new ballet trend of bucolic peasant life and supernatural and psychological elements. Robert le diable featured the first ‘ballet blanc’, with deceased nuns rising from their tombs and seductively dancing, a scene that captivated audiences and influenced other Romantic ballets.
Giselle has become an important cornerstone of the classical repertoire for companies around the world, and it has also inspired contemporary choreographers as well. Swedish choreographer Mats Ek made dance history in 1982 with his highly successful, radical re-interpretation of Giselle performed by Cullberg Ballet, while Akram Khan’s version thrilled audiences with powerful images of a migrant worker community when it premiered in 2016 at English National Ballet.
HKB’s new production of Giselle seeks to bring a fresh energy into this classic. Septime Webre and Charla Genn have been working together on various stagings of Giselle since the mid-2000’s, and this production features glamorous French-influenced set and costume designs by Benois de la Danse award winner and designer of HKB’s Coco Chanel: the Life of a Fashion Icon, Jérôme Kaplan.
Celebrated for its charming story and the mystical ‘ballet blanc’ act, Giselle has remained the epitome of Romantic ballet throughout its evolution and retained at its core the poignant story about love, betrayal and ultimately redemption.
Count Albrecht has fallen in love with Giselle, a peasant girl who believes he is a villager named Loys. When he comes from his castle to court her, he leaves his cloak and sword in a nearby cottage, as they may reveal his true identity. Giselle’s mother, Berthe, hopes that Giselle will marry a local gamekeeper, Hilarion, who is deeply in love with her. Hilarion interrupts the young couple’s meeting, reminds Giselle of his love for her and warns her against trusting Loys. Giselle is sure of Loys’ devotion and disregards Hilarion's suspicions.
Horns sound in the distance, and Albrecht’s squire, Wilfred, warns his master that a Hunting Party is approaching. Hilarion observes this encounter and at the first opportunity breaks into Loys’ cottage to try to uncover the mystery surrounding Loys’ identity. The Hunting Party arrives led by the Duke of Courland and his daughter Bathilde, who is Count Albrecht’s fiancée. They ask for refreshments and a resting place at Berthe’s cottage.
Bathilde is charmed by Giselle’s dancing, and when she discovers they are both engaged to be married, she gives Giselle her necklace. Before entering the cottage, the Duke orders a hunting horn to be left outside so the Hunting Party may

be summoned if needed. This provides Hilarion the opportunity to compare the crest on the horn with that of the sword he has discovered in Loys’ cottage. Hilarion now has proof to unmask Loys as the noble Albrecht. At first, Giselle refuses to believe him, but when Bathilde claims Albrecht as her fiancée, the shock drives Giselle to madness. In her delirium, she relives her love for Loys and dies of a broken heart.

GISELLE’S GRAVE IN THE FOREST

As midnight approaches, Hilarion is keeping vigil by Giselle's grave beside a forest lake. This is the hour when the Willis materialise. Willis are the ghosts of jilted young women who have died before their wedding day and avenge themselves by forcing any man they meet to dance to his death. Myrtha, the queen of Willis, appears and summons Giselle from her grave.
When Albrecht enters bringing flowers for her grave, Giselle appears to him. The Willis return in pursuit of Hilarion, whom they exhaust with dancing until his death. Next, they fall vengefully on Albrecht, and Myrtha condemns him to also dance until he dies. Giselle urges him to the safety of her grave, but Myrtha takes control. Under Myrtha’s power, Giselle is forced to lure Albrecht into the dance. She tries to sustain him,
but his dancing exhausts him more and more. Just as death seems imminent, dawn breaks. Daylight destroys the Willis’ power, and he is saved. The Willis disappear into the morning mist, and Giselle returns to her grave, leaving Albrecht grieving and alone.

Born in Buenos Aires, Marinela Nunez trained at Teatro Colón Ballet School and toured internationally with Maximiliano Guerra and Teatro Colón. She joined The Royal Ballet School in 1997 and The Royal Ballet in 1998 and was promoted to Principal in 2002. She has performed leading roles in the classical and contemporary repertories, and role creations include Infra, Carbon Life, DGV: Danse à grande vitesse, Aeternum, Asphodel Meadows, ‘Diana and Actaeon’ (Metamorphosis: Titian 2012), Human Seasons, Tetractys, Acosta’s Carmen and Multiverse, among others. Nunez was awarded Best Female Dancer at the Critics’ Circle Dance Awards (2005, 2012, 2018 and 2022), Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance (2013) and OBE in 2024.
Matthew Ball was born in Liverpool and joined The Royal Ballet School at age 11. He progressed through the ranks, becoming a Principal Dancer in 2018. Matthew has collaborated with renowned choreographers like Wayne McGregor, Crystal Pite and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. He has also choreographed his own work, including (Re) Current for The Royal Ballet and a commercial campaign for ‘Xiaomi.’ Recently, he has branched into different fields, working on several fashion and film projects, including two dance shorts with Pennefather Productions and co-starring with Natalia Osipova and Francesca Hayward. As well as in the feature-length film Romeo and Juliet Beyond Words as Tybalt.
Principal Dancer, Dutch National Ballet 荷蘭國家芭蕾舞團首席舞蹈員
Born in Indiana, USA, Constantine Allen trained at various ballet schools worldwide before joining Stuttgart Ballet in 2012. Within six months, he became a soloist and was later promoted to principal dancer in 2013. Since 2018, he has been a Principal Dancer with Dutch National Ballet. Allen’s repertoire includes roles in classics like Giselle and Swan Lake as well as contemporary works like John Neumeier’s Othello with Stuttgart Ballet and Armand in John Neumeier’s La Dame aux Camélias with Dutch National Ballet. His notable accolades include the Grand Prix at Tanzolymp Berlin and the Bronze Medal at Youth America Grand Prix, New York.
Born in Brazil, Victor Caixeta graduated from Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin, joined the Mariinsky Ballet in St Petersburg in 2017 and was promoted to soloist in 2019. He relocated to the Netherlands in 2022 as first soloist with Dutch National Ballet, where he performed Raymonda and Sleeping Beauty, partnering Russian star Olga Smirnova. Caixeta was promoted to principal in 2023 after his first performance of Swan Lake . In 2023/24 he debuted as Albrecht in Giselle and performed all the classical ballets by the young age of 24. His broad repertoire makes him very versatile and one of the most talented dancers of his generation.
Former Principal Dancer, Hong Kong Ballet 香港芭蕾舞團前首席舞蹈員
Lindzay Chan was born in Hong Kong. She started professional life as a ballet dancer after attending Elmhurst Ballet School and later the Royal Ballet Upper School in England. As a ballet dancer she has performed in Europe, China, Taiwan, Japan and Australia, and rose to the rank of Principal Dancer with Hong Kong Ballet. She has also hosted two programmes on TVB and is an actress, continuing to perform on TV, cinema and stage. She is a winner of the Golden Horse Award, Asia’s most prestigious film award, and Portugal's Bronze Camellia Award, both for best actress. Lindzay first performed with HK Ballet over 40 years ago and is thrilled to be performing with HK Ballet again in this new production of Giselle.
Viviana Durante joined The Royal Ballet at age 17 after training at its school and was then promoted to principal at age 21. She has danced all major roles, winning equal acclaim in the classics and in dramatic ballets by Kenneth MacMillan, creating roles in his Winter Dreams and The Judas Tree, among many new works. A former principal with American Ballet Theatre (ABT), La Scala in Milan and Japan’s K-Ballet, she has guested worldwide and is a frequent judge at international competitions. From 2019 to 2024 she was Artistic Director of English National Ballet School. As Artistic Director of Viviana Durante Company, she currently stages innovative dance events at the Barbican Centre, London and around the world.
Charla Genn began her professional career in South Africa with Cape Town City Ballet. She danced as Soloist and Principal Dancer with Bat-Dor Dance Company (Israel) and Eglevsky Ballet (USA). In 1985 she co-founded Ballet Manhattan, where she was Artistic Director and Principal Dancer, performing throughout Asia, Europe and North America. Genn has staged numerous ballets for various companies. She was also Rehearsal Director for American Repertory Ballet and on faculty at The Juilliard School. Currently, she teaches company classes at American Ballet Theatre and Metropolitan Opera in New York City. She is also a Dance Rehabilitation Specialist and coaches professional dancers.
French award-winning designer Jérôme Kaplan showcases his talents worldwide. Design highlights include Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Romeo and Juliet for Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Zhang Yimou’s Raise the Red Lantern for National Ballet of China, Christopher Wheeldon’s The Sleeping Beauty for the Royal Danish Ballet, Nacho Duato’s The Nutcracker for the Mikhailovsky Theatre and Alexei Ratmansky's Don Quixote for Dutch National Ballet. More recent works include Lost Illusions for the Bolshoi, Cinderella for the Australian Ballet, Swan Lake for the Zürich Ballet and La Bayadère for Staatsballett Berlin. In 2024, his design for HKB’s Coco Chanel: the Life of a Fashion Icon earned him Outstanding Set and Costume Design at the 25th Hong Kong Dance Awards.
Adolphe Adam was a prolific French composer, music critic and teacher. Throughout his lifetime, Adam wrote more than 30 operas as well as music for more than 30 plays in addition to church music and pieces for piano. Desiring to communicate traditional values through his dramatic operas and ballets, he is most known throughout the world as a composer of ballet music and his Christmas carol O Holy Night. In all, Adam composed scores for 14 ballets, including Faust (London 1833), Le Corsaire (Paris 1856) and his masterpiece Giselle (Paris 1841), seen as the benchmark of romantic ballet.
Currently Senior Lecturer (Lighting Design) at HKAPA’s School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts*, Billy Chan is a three-time recipient of the Hong Kong Drama Award for Best Lighting Design. His works for Ran Space Shanghai won Outstanding Musical Lighting Design awards at the 2024 China Musical Society Annual Ceremony (No Longer Human) and the 2023 Beijing Tianqiao Musical Annual Ceremony (Into the White Night). Other accolades include Outstanding Lighting Design at the 2019 Hong Kong Dance Awards for Waiting Heart and Best Stage Art (Lighting Design) at the 2017 Shanghai One Drama Awards for What is Sex?. He recently collaborated with seeyousoon production for the highly acclaimed Prima Facie.

As one of today’s most sought-after ballet conductors, Fayçal Karoui regularly works with international companies such as The Royal Ballet, La Scala Ballet Company, Paris Opera Ballet, Wiener Staatsballett, Dutch National Ballet, among many others. From 2006 to 2012, he served as Music Director of the New York City Ballet. He has been the Chief Conductor of Orchestre de Pau Pays de Béarn since 2002 and regularly works with such top international soloists as Alexandre Kantorow, Steven Hough, Alexandre Tharaud, Bertrand Chamayou, Daishin Kashimoto and Gautier Capuçon. He has also conducted such major orchestras as Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic etc.

City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (CCOHK) holds a unique position as one of Asia’s leading chamber orchestras. Founded by oboist Leanne Nicholls in 1999, CCOHK has performed with many of the world’s most celebrated artists including Sir James Galway, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Dame Emma Kirkby, Sir Thomas Allen, Sir Neville Marriner, Michala Petri, Christian Lindberg, Sarah Chang, Julian Lloyd Webber, Edgar Meyer, Branford Marsalis, Richard Galliano, Sir Karl Jenkins and Alma Deutscher. CCOHK’s progressive programming has been internationally recognized with tour invitations to festivals in London, L’Aquila, Taipei, Beijing and Shanghai. Additionally, HKB performs works by some of today’s most sought-after choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Justin Peck, Jiří Kylian, Nacho Duato and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa as well as innovative new works by its Choreographer-in-Residence, Hu Song Wei Ricky, and numerous emerging Hong Kong choreographers.
With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB has recently toured throughout Europe, the US and Asia and places a special emphasis on representing Hong Kong in Mainland China and the West. HKB maintains the Hong Kong Academy of Ballet, a professionally-oriented ballet school, as well as a full schedule of award-winning community programmes and crossover collaborations throughout Hong Kong to ensure ballet is accessible to all. HKB has also produced engaging original videos and dance films that have collectively garnered over 10 million views online, connecting with ballet lovers worldwide.

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US for six years. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation standing at the intersection of creativity and social impact.
Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the quality and breadth of its work-both onstage and in its engagement and educational initiatives, with its annual budget growing over 500% during that time. In Hong Kong, Webre recently staged a pair of new productions for HKB: a Romeo+ Juliet set in the early 1960’s Hong Kong, and The Nutcracker set in Hong Kong in the early 20th century. In addition, he has staged a number of productions for HKB, including new productions of Giselle , ALICE (in wonderland) , Sam and Her Amazing Book of Dinosaurs , The Great Gatsby , The Wizard of Oz , Cinderella and Peter Pan
As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.
