ROMEO + JULIET
An epic love story set in 1960s Hong Kong
Ancient grudges between triad families. Passion and tragedy. The iconic balcony scene. Experience the thrill of first love and the drama and heartbreak of warring families in 1960s Hong Kong! Shakespeare’s timeless tale of star-crossed lovers is given a fresh and thought-provoking retelling in Septime Webre’s lush Romeo + Juliet. Juliet’s father is an unrelenting Shanghainese tycoon who is determined to marry his only daughter off to a wealthy gweilo, not knowing that Juliet has already given her heart to the only son of his greatest enemy.
Accompanied by Prokofiev’s celebrated score, an emotional and colourful tale of young love and loss in retro Hong Kong is vividly brought to life with captivating dancing, lively mahjong games and glamorous cheongsams. Webre’s original choreography seamlessly incorporates intense street battles with traditional Hong Kong-style kung fu against visually authentic sets inspired by old Hong Kong’s cityscape. Romeo + Juliet was in high demand during its US tour to New York and North Carolina in 2023, receiving enthusiastic public and critical acclaim. This brilliantly imagined adaptation is especially relevant for contemporary audiences as it fuses dance and drama against a backdrop of a world in flux. This September, Romeo + Juliet will be performed as the opening programme of ‘Hong Kong Week 2025@Seoul’ at The National Theater of Korea.

GLAM ROCK
Celebrating the music of Depeche Mode, Freddie Mercury & Queen and HK rock band Beyond
Immerse yourself in high drama and phenomenal music at Glam Rock, an evening featuring Andonis Foniadakis’ Strangelove with music by Depeche Mode, Trey McIntyre’s Mercury Half-Life with a score by Freddie Mercury and Queen and an exciting world premiere from HKB Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky set to the music of Beyond
Inspired by ‘80s pop pioneers Depeche Mode’s powerful, evocative lyrics, European sensation Foniadakis’ thrilling hit Strangelove creatively explores the complexities of the human condition with deathdefying lifts and electrifying choreography brimming with energy and passion. The unique blend of dark, atmospheric electronic sounds are the perfect backdrop to a visually and emotionally captivating ballet that is a testament to the transformative power of music and dance.
‘Strangelove had people on their feet screaming and cheering at the end, something rarely seen in Hong Kong’ — South China Morning Post
An emotional work that speaks to the power of community by celebrating the everyone’s individuality, Trey McIntyre’s energetic and wildly popular Mercury Half-Life brings to life popular songs from iconic rock band Queen like ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ and ‘Bohemian Rapsody’. McIntyre says Queen’s music has the perfect blend of showiness and rhythm to highlight something that doesn’t often appear on the ballet stage: tap dance, which creates a new dimension to the familiar, beloved music.
Spotlighting music from Hong Kong indie rock band Beyond, Hu’s uplifting new work embraces the optimism and humanity in the songs and features costumes by Robert Wun, the first Hong Kong designer to debut at Paris Haute Couture Week with eclectic, sculptural designs. Beyond is best known for revolutionizing the local music scene with their unique blend of rock and socially conscious lyrics, inspiring generations with songs like ‘Boundless Oceans Vast Skies’ and ‘Glorious Years’, leaving a lasting impact on the city’s cultural identity.
Glam Rock promises to be an unforgettable show that delivers inspiring human connection through dance.
LYRIC THEATRE, THE HONG KONG ACADEMY FOR PERFORMING ARTS
Once upon a time, a beautiful princess is cursed to sleep deeply for a hundred years until awakened by a prince’s kiss. Renowned international ballet dancer and choreographer Vladimir Malakhov (HKB’s La Bayadère ) weaves a powerful tale of good triumphing over evil as Princess Aurora and Prince Desiré overcome the wicked fairy Carabosse with the help of the good Lilac Fairy. Considered the most perfect classical ballet ever created, The Sleeping Beauty is best known for its glorious Tchaikovsky score and intricate choreography, which requires intense precision, strength and stamina.
This new production features Jordi Roig’s exquisite sets and costumes and acclaimed international guest stars from renowned ballet companies. The Sleeping Beauty ’s fantastical characters and fanciful wedding celebration will have audiences falling under the spell of this bewitching fairytale masterpiece!
Reimagined by an international team of creative minds together with HKB's Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky and his choreographer wife Mai Jingwen, The Butterfly Lovers is a legendary Chinese folktale about humble scholar Liang Shanbo and aristocratic heiress Zhu Yingtai, who disguises herself as a boy in order to study at a prestigious academy. From innocently meeting as students and forging a strong, immediate bond to dangerously rebelling against centuries-old forces that threaten to keep them apart, the lovers face unexpected challenges at every turn, as secrets are revealed and a shocking family betrayal ultimately seals their fate.
With a sweeping original score by acclaimed Chinese composer Tian Mi in collaboration with New York City Ballet Orchestra under the baton of Lio Kuokman, this powerful tale of forbidden love and filial duty features Academy Award winner Tim Yip’s (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Webre’s The Great Gatsby) visually stunning sets and costumes that bring to life a world with traditional and modern elements. Praised by the South China Morning Post as ‘a triumph of choreography’ and ‘full of emotional power’, The Butterfly Lovers is a glorious fusion of inspiring dance, contemporary Chinese aesthetics and eternal hope.

CARMINA BURANA 布蘭詩歌
Two HK Performing Arts Flagships Present an Unforgettable Evening of Music and Dance
HKB’s Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky’s poignant The Last Song joins Septime Webre’s powerful dance masterpiece Carmina Burana. Inspired by J.S. Bach’s music and Oscar Wilde’s story The Nightingale and the Rose, Hu created the hauntingly beautiful The Last Song as a powerful and intimate meditation of an artist’s relationship with his muse, symbolised by the nightingale.
With intriguing dances from medieval times all the way to the present, Webre’s riveting Carmina Burana, with its universal theme about the eternal search for love, is set to Carl Orff’s powerful music, widely considered one of the most celebrated scores ever written. Orff was inspired by 24 provocative medieval poems, both sacred and profane, written by 12th century monks about fortune, love, lust and gluttony, and Webre’s charismatic choreography brings the drama to life. Breathtaking nine-metre scaffolding surrounding the stage evokes monks’ cells and holds over 100 commanding chorus singers from Shanghai.
Under the baton of HK Phil Resident Conductor Lio Kuokman, this epic double bill programme uniquely brings the acclaimed dancers of HKB and the world-class musicians of the HK Phil together for a celebration of culture and artistry, combining riveting music with visually arresting dance. Carmina Burana won Outstanding Large Venue Production, and The Last Song won Outstanding Choreography at the 24th Hong Kong Dance Awards.

Hong Kong Academy of Ballet 2025/26 Year-End Performance
香港芭蕾舞學院 2025/26 學年結業展演
LA FILLE MAL GARDÉE
女大不中留
Hong Kong Academy of Ballet’s annual year-end performance La Fille Mal Gardée in May 2026 joyfully showcases dedicated students transforming their classroom learning into a fabulous stage performance with a full-length narrative ballet to highlight and nurture their technical skills and artistic development. La Fille Mal Gardée is one of the oldest and most important works in the modern ballet repertory, having been staged originally in Bordeaux, France in 1789 and subsequently restaged by scores of choreographers throughout the centuries, including Marius Petipa/Lev Ivanov in 1885 and Frederick Ashton in 1960.
Young farm girl Lise is in love with Colas, a farmhand, but her widowed mother Simone wants her to marry into wealth. A prosperous landowner Thomas proposes an engagement between his son Alain and Lise, who is completely uninterested. When Alain and his father arrive with a marriage contract, Colas and Lise are accidentally discovered in her bedroom to everyone’s dismay. The lovers fall on their knees to ask Simone for forgiveness and her blessing to marry, and she finally gives in amidst general rejoicing by the villagers.
Full of charm and exuberant humour, the striking performance features elements of natural folk dances, from dancing chickens and a maypole dance to a Lancashire clog dance with choreography inspired by the countryside.

HKB is partnering with Guangzhou Opera House to establish the ‘Greater Bay Area Ballet Incubation Centre’ to cultivate new ballet talent in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Project-based programmes will be offered throughout the year to nurture young artists and create exceptional ballet works, along with educational activities to promote ballet regionally. In this spirit, the 2025 Summer Gala will showcase captivating performances from the Incubation Centre and offer meaningful cultural exchange opportunities for ballet students and their families.
Additionally, The Royal Ballet School and HKB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to solidify their positions as key hubs for ballet exchanges and collaborations in Asia. These initiatives reflect the Academy’s dedication to creating artistic connections and enriching the cultural landscape.
HKB wants to cultivate a love of ballet and to make ballet accessible for people from all walks of life with entertaining, educational and inspiring programmes in schools and in the community.
Ballet can be appreciated by everyone, no matter what their age or background. Caring Community Programmes offer inclusive ballet experiences like open dress rehearsals and special ballet workshops for seniors, those with special needs, underserved populations and ethnic minorities. In 2025, the popular programme ‘Dancing to Hong Kong’s Heartbeat 3.0’ lets participants enjoy dynamic workshops and field trips and become more familiar with local elements in HKB productions. HKB has also created a series of meaningful Silver Ballet programmes. A three-day ‘Silver Ballet Camp’ allows seniors to learn simple choreography and participate in a fun hands-on accessories workshop, and ‘Silver Ballet: Dare to Dream’ and ‘Silver Ballet: Dance with Joy @Community’ classes help seniors improve their flexibility and health. We hope to continue these activities for more seniors to learn about ballet and to expand the programmes to communities beyond the city.

Engaging Production Programmes provide opportunities to learn about the creative process directly from HKB dancers, choreographers, designers and special guest artists.
HKB is dedicated to enhancing the mental and physical well-being of seniors aged 55 and above. Guided by the ‘Joyful Learning, Ageless Delight’ motto, the dynamic Silver Ballet series enhances understanding and enjoyment of ballet. Participants engage in gentle warm-ups and simple choreography with classical music to improve posture, flexibility and balance.
HKB reaches over 70,000 audience members every year. However, ticket sales only cover 20% of HKB's annual costs, and we rely on generous donors like you. Help HKB foster innovation and excellence from schools to the stage! Whether it’s creating inspiring ballets, touring internationally, nurturing our students or developing custom performances for special needs audiences, HKB is an important asset to the community. Your gift today will have a lasting impact on HKB both this season and for many more years to come. Whether you are a past, current or future donor to HKB, we thank you for your kind consideration in making this essential work possible.
*Donations of HK$100 or above are tax-deductible, except for the Dancers’ Sponsorship Fund. 捐款港幣 $100 或以上可獲收據申請扣稅,舞蹈員贊助基金除外。

With Heartfelt Gratitude
Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) expresses its sincerest gratitude to China National Arts Fund for generously supporting two significant artistic development initiatives for two consecutive years: the Carmina Burana tour and the Greater Bay Area Ballet Choreography Training Programme. These dynamic initiatives have deepened collaboration between HKB and Mainland China, enriched cultural exchange and opened up new artistic frontiers. We look forward to the lasting impact of these projects to advance arts development in both regions – better, further and broader.
