New National Board Members

For 2023, we have four new board members including myself. Whilst it is sad to say goodbye to previous board members, I’m pleased that collectively the four of us bring to the board over 70 years of hire industry experience working in different roles and companies across Australia. During our discussions at the recent board meeting held in June, some of the actionable tasks ahead included:

Straight to business for HRIA’s new President

SIX MONTHS INTO MY FIRST YEAR AS HRIA NATIONAL PRESIDENT AND WHAT A WHIRLWIND IT’S BEEN.

• HIRE23 Convention review and planning for HIRE24 in Brisbane

• Marketing of the hire industry to the wider community

• Recruitment and Training for the hire industry

• Safety incidents and planned initiatives

• Review of Strategic Plan and action priorities

• New software program implementation

With the new financial year underway, I look forward to seeing some of the initiatives being rolled out in the coming months to our members.

In this short time, I’ve had the privilege of chairing two national HRIA board meetings, been part of a record Hire Convention, had a visit to the USA to see the American Rental Association’s Rental Show and sat in on multiple strategic committee meetings. I have enjoyed liaising with the national office team led by CEO James Oxenham, who continue to do an excellent job delivering initiatives for the benefit of our members and supporting our state meetings.

Many readers of this magazine will have attended our HIRE23 Convention at The Dome at Sydney Showgrounds in May. Whilst I have attended a dozen hire conventions over the last 15 years in variety of different roles such as delegate, exhibitor and QLD State President, this year for me was the most exciting and daunting as National President. It was an extremely busy week with a jam-packed agenda of seminars and events as well as an impressive array of equipment on display inside The Dome. It was also pleasing to read in the post-convention survey that 78% of delegates who attended are likely to return. Thank you to all members who supported our annual hire convention.

Enabling diversity through flexible work

Construction sets ambitious goals

In May 2023, the Australian Constructors Association (ACA) pledged to transform the culture of the industry from the bottom up to address current workforce shortages and position the industry for the future. That included setting ambitious goals for gender equality and flexibility.

At the time, ACA CEO Jon Davies said the pledge aimed to address two significant industry issues known to impact workplace culture: gender equality and workplace flexibility.

“As the most male dominated industry in Australia and with the widest pay gap of any, this is an ambitious target that will promote gender equality and greater diversity and inclusion,” said Davies.

“To further raise the bar industrywide, the second target area is workplace flexibility. ACA members will mandate flexible work plans for employees on every project, both office and site roles, in a move to address the long hours, high stress and poor work-life balance that characterises the industry.”

The ACA are the latest in a number of big, traditionally male-dominated industry sectors who are rethinking their approach to inclusion, diversity and more flexible workplaces.

Big miners make bold moves

Back in 2016, one of the world’s biggest miners, BHP, outlined a bold aspirational goal to achieve gender balance by 2025. At the time, then CEO Andrew Mackenzie said they knew the benefits would far outweigh any difficulties encountered.

“This was something we had to do for the good of the business, our people and the communities in which we operate,” said Mackenzie in 2019.

Many, from inside and outside the organisation questioned whether they could achieve it, but as a company, they chose to ignore the negative commentary and back their capability to make the changes necessary to reach their aspirations.

The progress BHP has made to date has largely been achieved by focusing on the basics: removing bias from their hiring and recruitment practices, embedding flexible

work, making respect a non-negotiable behaviour at work, and implementing an annual gender pay review.

And it’s been backed up by data showing their most inclusive and diverse teams are outperforming other teams in terms of safety, culture and productivity. People in diverse teams are also more likely to speak up, share ideas, work together to solve problems and make better decisions.

Fortescue tells a similar story. In 2021, they endorsed a family diversity plan which embodied their commitment to a workforce that reflected their communities. As former CEO Elizabeth Gaines told a conference in 2022: “We know that diversity delivers the best results. It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. And as companies, we all have a responsibility to ensure as many women as possible have the opportunity to participate in, and make a strong contribution, to the resources sector.”

Challenge pre-conceptions

When some of Hire’s biggest customers

AUGUST 2023 5 INDUSTRY NEWS Hire&Rental DIVERSITY FLEXIBILITY

are publicly taking a stance on issues that impact society and our local communities, it makes sense to take notice.

In December 2022, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) released their scorecard on the state of gender equity in Australia. Their report found that every single industry in Australia has a gender pay gap that favours men, the gender pay gap is 22.8% and men are twice as likely as women to be in the top earning bracket.

The good news is that the gender pay gap in ‘Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services’ had the largest single drop of any industry sector in WGEA’s data, with a decline of 5.1 percentage points. But while that’s a great result, the gender pay gap for our sector still sits around 26 per cent.

While you may already be consciously shifting cultural and behavioural mindsets within your own teams, are other pre-conceived ideas holding back your Hire business, especially in terms of safety, productivity, culture and wellbeing, and impacting your ability to hire — and retain — great new talent?

Diana Hodgson is the Founder and Director of HR Strategic Partners, a practice specialising in leadership and culture. She says that while change is clearly happening, there are always opportunities to better realise the value of a diverse, inclusive and flexible workplace.

“Flexibility is a key enabler for diversity. My advice to leaders in the Hire industry is take the time to listen to your people about what flexibility would be meaningful to them. They know your business; they know what you need but how well do you know what they need?”

Diana says many businesses mistakenly equate flexible work with working from home, particularly in the post-pandemic world. However, while working from home arrangements will suit many employees and businesses, it’s not the only aspect of flexibility that should be considered. Hours of work is another, including part-time options or staggered shifts or rosters across the workday.

“The nature of the Hire industry means you often need people onsite to engage with customers, service equipment or deliver/pick-up machinery,” she says. “So keep an open mind around what flexibility looks like and how you can make it work for your business and your people.”

With everyone at a different stage in their life journey — from parental leave

and caring for kids or ageing parents, to employees transitioning to retirement, looking to take up some part time study or simply needing a mental health day — there will always be elements that need to be juggled and balanced.

“That means employers and workers need to shift their mindsets from an obligation to work in a traditional way to striking a balance that suits the business, customers and employees,” says Diana.

“When more people see others more confidently and effectively working flexibly, I have no doubt we’ll find a great evolution in workplaces where flexibility becomes the productive norm across the board.”

Flexible workplaces are an enticing drawcard for people looking to build a career in Hire, especially women, but it’s only one part of the journey towards more inclusive and diverse workplaces. Considering we’re in the midst of a skills shortage and in some cases, competing with tier one customers for the best talent, maybe now’s the time to focus on inclusion, diversity and flexible work and then reap the rewards.

Going green for a more sustainable future

IN JUNE 2022, COATES LAUNCHED THEIR GREENER CHOICES RANGE. TWELVE MONTHS ON, THEY’RE CONVINCED THAT GOING GREEN IS NOT ONLY GOOD FOR THE PLANET, IT’S A LOGICAL CHOICE FOR BUSINESS.

Ask Peter Davis, Executive General Manager – Fleet at Coates what he thinks about their Greener Choices product range and the answer is clear.

“I’m pretty happy with what we’ve achieved over the past 12 months and excited that it’s becoming a normal part of our fleet.”

Like many companies in Australia and across the world, Coates committed to net-zero targets and established a sustainability framework with five key pillars to help drive positive change for our stakeholders and wider society. The Greener Choices range offers opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve efficiencies and commit to best practice environmental sustainability standards.

Currently, the energy source categories in the range are hybrid, battery electric, solar and low pollutant engines (USA Tier 4 Final / EU Stage 4 & 5). The range also includes features such as biofuel compatibility, energy efficient appliances and LED lighting.

Davis says it’s probably one of the biggest changes any rental company has been through in the past.

“We’re the first large equipment hire company in Australia to call it out although everyone had been dabbling in greener product options,” says Davis. “We just got on the front foot and went out and marketed it.”

In the 12 months since Greener Choices was launched, Coates has grown their low emission fleet by just over $25 million.

“We set a target of 17.5% of our powered fleet to be part of the Greener Choices product range in FY23 but we’re past that already,” he says. “We’ll increase that to above 20% in FY24.”

Coates is now finding they’re getting

more requests from mid-tier customers about the Greener Choices range.

“With a lot of our mid-tier customers working or sub-contracting for the big tier one construction and mining companies, they have to include details in their proposals how they plan to reduce emissions. That means the focus on emissions and sustainability is no longer just at the top end of town, it’s starting to filtrate down.”

The challenge, he says, is that many customers don’t know what they don’t know.

“It’s what we’ve got to get better at as industry, selling the value of green. But it’s not just about emissions; at the end of the day, it’s about cost.”

INDUSTRY NEWS AUGUST 2023 8 SUSTAINABILITY
Hire&Rental

“If you think about it, a customer might hire a diesel-powered generator to run one or two site sheds. That generator operates 12 to 24 hours a day to power the lights, air-conditioning, urn, microwave and laptops. But if you put solar panels on the roof of the site sheds and install a battery energy storage unit, they don’t have to draw as much power from the generator and it might only be turned on once every few days. It not only decreases emissions but is more economically viable for the customer because they’re no longer spending hundreds of dollars a day on diesel. It’s a no brainer.”

While costs will always be one of the major drivers in the rental industry, customers are starting to see the benefits of low emission equipment and are most are willing to pay extra for it.

“If we don’t make a return from these assets, we can’t reinvest, and if we can’t continue to reinvest, the purchase price won’t come down. That’s when it becomes a challenge for our customers. We’ve been careful in our selection of Green Choices, ensuring the products are fit for purpose and what our customers are asking for. To date, from a business and financial return point of view, it’s been good for us and for our customers.”

Coates is also practicing what they preach with their sustainability program extending beyond their hire fleet. The first electric vehicles for the Coates sales team are now in use while

solar panels have been installed on their large facilities.

“We’ve all got our part to play,” says Davis. “That realisation is starting to hit us here.”

“The feedback we’ve had from our team has been phenomenal because they can see it’s not window dressing or lip service. There’s pride in what they can see is happening with the hire fleet, they can see solar going onto the roofs of our properties, the electric vehicles are here and we’ve implemented much better waste management systems. The change is tangible.”

They’re also acutely aware of the community demand for change.

“I think most people are concerned about the environment and climate warming, I know I am,” he says. “None of us have the answers but if you don’t commit to making a change and make a start, it will never happen.”

For Davis, that makes it an exciting time to be part of the hire industry.

“It’s now more than just providing equipment it’s how do we provide a solution? Electricity and power usage are ‘low-hanging fruit’ for our customers and an easy target to reduce emissions. There’s less maintenance, you don’t have to change oils or filters, there are less moving parts and improved safety, and the costs of repairs and maintenance are lower. All these things offset a customer’s hire costs and it starts to make sense.”

“But we have to keep working on products and pricing and listening to our customers to ensure we continue to understand the trends and know what the market is demanding.”

Davis says Coates will continue to grow their Greener Choices product range.

“It’s good for our customers, good for the environment, good for our business and good for our people,” he says. “And the reality is that if we don’t do it, if we don’t continue to adapt, we will get left behind because it’s happening.”

Coates Greener Choices range solutions include:

• Electric and hybrid boom and scissor lifts

• Greener lighting solutions, including solar powered, hybrid and portable LED options

• Electric, lithium-ion battery-powered forklifts and warehousing equipment

• Stage 5 low diesel particulate emission engine forklifts and telehandlers

• Large range of battery powered hand tools

• Blended Biodiesel, up to B7, for all Coates’ diesel engine-powered plant and equipment.

BESS Delivers Key Environmental Benefits for Tunnel Project

MORE THAN EVER, AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY IS SEEKING CLEANER, GREENER SOLUTIONS AS THE NATION TRANSITIONS TO NET ZERO 2050. KENNARDS HIRE IS ACUTELY AWARE OF THE MULTI-SECTOR CHALLENGES THIS PRESENTS AND OFFERS BESPOKE SOLUTIONS TO ENSURE THAT LARGE-SCALE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS GET DELIVERED ON TIME, ON BUDGET AND WITH LOWER IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT.

Switching to a new generation of quieter, more energy efficient modular power systems can enable significant reductions in emissions, fuel consumption and noise on major construction projects.

A prime example of leading lowemission technology in action is the 45kva Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) used on the complex WestConnex M4-M5 Link Tunnels project in Sydney.

Issues with traditional power supply

The Acciona Samsung Bouygues Joint Venture (ASBJV) was relying on a diesel generator to provide onsite electricity for the tunnel project, around the clock.

This traditional power supply was proving noisy, expensive and high in CO2 emissions. It was also causing generator engine damage from the light loading.

ASBJV asked Kennards Hire for an alternative power solution which could offer all-round benefits and the lowest ecological footprint.

The BESS was the obvious choice. When coupled with a 100kva diesel generator providing cycle charging and load support, it helped maintain operations when power requirements were low by running solely on the battery.

The hybrid solution offered reductions in overall fuel use, noise and carbon emissions, also satisfied stakeholder expectations for energy options with lower emissions.

Key savings on cost, emissions and noise

BESS users can expect significant savings in both fuel usage and carbon emissions, which is why it’s proving such a popular onsite energy alternative.

ASBJV observed several benefits from the BESS on the WestConnex project:

• 50-70% reduction in diesel consumption

• significantly reduced CO2 emissions, averaging 800-1000kg per week

• reduced generator operating hours, with the BESS running twice a day for up to three hours per cycle, rather than 24 hours per day

• noticeable reduction in noise levels.

ASBJV Project Manager Clement Kaiffer emphasised the importance of finding low-emissions solutions, with stakeholders looking to a net zero future.

“I believe these solutions are the future of the construction industry and they should be communicated to all the main players."

Kennards Hire Operations Product Specialist, Paul Nicholson, worked closely onsite with members of the

ASBJV team to gather data, adapt the BESS to the unique site conditions, and discuss options to meet the project’s changing needs.

“Load calculations had to be completed for a number of options due to the site changing and being bought back to a smaller footprint," he said.

“The unit worked on site seamlessly, and we are speaking to the customer about similar opportunities for their next project,” he added.

The ability to provide cleaner, more sustainable equipment hire solutions to reduce the impact on the environment is a challenge across many industries. Kennards Hire continues to invest in viable equipment solutions to help their customers achieve their environmental goals.

Attracting and retaining talent in a competitive market

WITH INCREASING SKILLS SHORTAGES AND FIERCE COMPETITION FOR TALENT IN A POST-PANDEMIC WORLD, IT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT THE WAY WE ATTRACT YOUNG PEOPLE TO THE HIRE INDUSTRY AND RETAIN THEM FOR THE LONG TERM.

There’s a lot of talk at the moment about generational change in the workplace. With Boomers and Generation X moving through management roles and becoming business leaders and owners, it’s the next generation — the Millenials (people born between 1980 and 1996) — who are in the spotlight. But with a reputation for jobhopping and not forming attachments to organisations or institutions, Millenials are often considered the hardest generation to retain.

What makes Millenials tick?

What can we do to attract, engage and retain Millenials? It starts by learning more about their motivations, needs and expectations. Fortunately, there’s been a lot of global research into what makes Millenials tick and it comes down to a few key considerations.

• They want to be engaged, stay informed and have ongoing conversations. The way they communicate (texting, tweeting, liking, Facetiming, etc.) is in real-time with a focus on feedback.

• With the shortage of skilled people across many roles, Millenials move

jobs because they’ve got opportunity to earn a better salary elsewhere for the same work.

• They expect a culture of diversity and inclusion when they enter an organisation. According to Deloitte’s research on Millennials, 69% of them also believe that when senior management teams are diverse, the working environment will be motivating and engaging.

• They’re extremely active on social media networks. Millennials in the workplace can be your strongest brand ambassadors, helping you attract new talent, build more brand awareness and generate more high-quality leads.

• They want to advance and learn new things in order to progress in their careers and expect their employers to offer them professional development opportunities, coaching, mentorship and chances to upskill.

• They also want their core values to align with the values of the business they’re working for. They aspire to make a positive impact and want to work for an employer that puts the wellbeing of people and planet above profits.

Millennials represent a change in how we work and view work. While they’re ambitious, have a strong work ethic and want to leave a positive impact on the world, they have a reputation for jobhopping. The good news is that in hire, Millenials tend to stay within the industry, despite leaving a company in search of better salaries or conditions. For Millenials that stay in a business, it’s because they’ve got great leaders, flexibility in how they can work, and access to opportunities to develop professionally and build a career.

Investing in Millenials

There are a range of professional development programs available to HRIA members, designed to keep young people engaged and motivated to build a career in hire. The Young Professionals Network offers a range of networking activities while the Young Professional Development program is a great opportunity to invest in younger employees. Ensure they’re on your professional development radar!

Finally, talk to SAT. For eight years, we have proudly worked in partnership with the HRIA and its members to change perspectives and create opportunities through training, education and selfawareness. We’re focused on helping members become better leaders so they can lead and engage the next generation for the long term. As for the Millenials in your team? We can provide training and professional development to ensure you retain and grow your Millenials for their next role in your business.

Maintaining the business oxygen of working capital amid the inflation strangulation

Monitor and forecast working capital

With inflation currently sitting at 7% and the official cash rate increasing 3.75 basis points in the past 10 months, we are starting to see several sectors feel the effects of the current economic downturn. Construction and retail have been hardest hit at to date but other sectors are harbouring concerns.

Skilled business operators tightly manage the business oxygen working capital position between the costs incurred and when payment is received to keep businesses breathing, even if some are short of breath at times.

Best practice risk management

Managing tight working capital in a tough economic climate can be challenging for businesses. However, there are several strategies Hire owners and managers can employ to navigate these difficult times.

To help identify potential issues early on and take appropriate actions, maintain a detailed understanding of cash inflows and outflows by regularly monitoring the financial position, particularly margins after other costs.

Prepare working capital forecasts to anticipate any potential shortfalls or surpluses.

Control expenses

Review expenses thoroughly and identify areas where reduction in costs can be made without negatively impacting core operations. Look for opportunities to negotiate better terms with suppliers, reduce discretionary spending, and optimise inventory management to minimise carrying costs (sell-down stock rather than hold on incurring costs).

Improve cash collection

Promptly invoice customers and followup on overdue payments. Consider offering incentives for early payments or implementing stricter credit control policies. If necessary, explore factoring or

invoice financing to convert outstanding invoices into immediate cash, however, avoid if turnover is reducing and expected to continue on that trend.

Negotiate with vendors and creditors

Engage in open communication with vendors and creditors. Request extended payment terms, discounts or revised contracts to help ease working capital burden. Many suppliers may be willing to work with customers during tough economic times to maintain a mutually beneficial relationship.

Strengthen customer relationships

Focus on retaining existing customers and building strong relationships. Offer exceptional customer service, personalised experiences and loyalty programs to encourage repeat business. Satisfied customers are more likely to pay promptly and recommend a business to others.

Explore financing options

Consider short-term financing options such as business lines of credit, working capital loans, or business overdrafts to bridge temporary working capital gaps.

However, carefully assess the terms and interest rates associated with these options to ensure they align with your long-term financial goals. A secured loan from owners and/or directors may also be an effective strategy. A low-cost option can include Krodok.

Optimise inventory management

Review your inventory levels and streamline your purchasing process. Avoid excessive stock levels that tie up your cash and prioritise inventory items with higher profit margins or faster turnover. Implement just-in-time inventory practices to minimise carrying costs.

Renegotiate contracts and leases

Evaluate existing contracts and leases to identify opportunities for cost savings. Negotiate with landlords, suppliers and service providers to renegotiate terms, lower rent or secure more favourable pricing. Be prepared to leverage longstanding relationships and the current economic climate to your advantage.

Seek professional advice

Consider consulting with financial advisors or business consultants

who specialise in working capital management. They can provide valuable insights, identify potential areas for improvement and help you develop tailored strategies based on your specific business needs.

Debt advisory

For Hire companies looking to grow additional funding may be required. With high inflation and rising interest rates, the amount businesses and individuals are able to borrow may have changed downward.

It is best practice to review your debt structures when there is an upcoming transaction, purchase or major change coming as part of the forecast for FY24. However, in the current market, we recommend all businesses should review their debt structuring. It is imperative that any business with reasonable debt levels should now review their finance costs and all their products held.

The rising interest rates are having a positive impact in the short term to lenders profits and their net margins. This means lenders still have a good appetite to lend, and good well-structured loans are still highly sort after.

It is important to understand that with the rising interest rates, lenders may look to bring in additional loan covenants such as an increase in insurance, loan to value ratios (LVRs) and dividend restrictions.

Using a debt adviser to review the current position, puts the business/ individual in a better position to understand the options to consider. Following an assessment, an advisor can confirm the price of your facilities and the terms in which those facilities should be offered.

A debt advisor also knows that if times are difficult, they know how best to approach lenders — a borrower can have that difficult discussion with a debt adviser that is independent and in their corner before the lender is approached.

The HLB Debt Advisory team can assist you with business loans, working capital needs and loan structuring.

Remember, managing tight working capital requires a proactive and disciplined approach. Regularly reassess financial positions, adjust strategies as needed, and remain vigilant in monitoring and controlling working capital to navigate challenging economic climates successfully.

Taking Equipment Hire Paperless

EFFICIENCY EXPERTS WORLDWIDE. ENVIRONMENTALISTS. HIRE INDUSTRY LEADERS FROM THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. EVEN CONSUMERS. IT OFTEN FEELS LIKE EVERYONE IS TRYING TO CONVINCE YOU: GO PAPERLESS!

But why should rental firms go paperless and what steps can they take to get there?

1. It’ll save money over time. Obvious costs of doing business using paper include not only the paper itself, but ink or toner, printer maintenance, time figuring out why the printer isn’t connecting or fighting out a workaround when the printer isn’t working at all. Ancillary costs exceed even those costs over time: Lost paperwork makes it difficult or impossible to locate lost items or to enforce contracts. Attempting to read poor handwriting can screw up reporting and billing. But savings as the main reason to go paperless.

2. It’ll help you generate money over time.

Condition photos, which are time- and geo-stamped and attached to contracts, make it easy to record item conditions when they’re delivered or collected.

When there’s a dispute over damages, it becomes a lot easier to resolve any dispute when you have all the evidence on your side.

Digital contracts allow you to have paperwork completely filled out and signed before a customer gets to your store; your counter staff isn’t worrying about printing and filing while trying to provide customer service. It saves customers time, too, which makes them more inclined to return.

If you’re able to take your dispatching, routes, and stops paperless, you’re able to route with maximum efficiency and even take on additional routes at the drop of a hat — you can see where your drivers are in realtime, know what they have on their truck, and route them to take on an extra job.

3. It’ll make your employees happier. The single biggest frustration employees have is poor communication. Paperbased processes limit your ability to communicate; they can’t communicate realtime updates immediately. Only one person can see information at a time. Digitising your processes gives everyone in your organization access to the same information so they’re making better decisions.

4. It’ll make you happier. Having access to the company’s data allows owners to make more informed decisions when determining the future of the business. With the ability to adjust contracts easily, amendments can be sent

to the appropriate departments to get quantities changed.

It’s easier to train employees because digital tools frequently have guardrails put in place to notice questionable entries or to ensure that only people with sufficient authority can complete certain tasks. And finally, critical information is more secure: Physical documents are easy to lose, steal, or damage. Digital documents are easy to back up, encrypt, and score securely. This can help prevent sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands safeguarding members from lawsuits or breaches.

How to go “paperless”.

Within the hire industry, there are various software solutions designed to help members go paperless. Point of Rental have spent 40+ years helping custometrs digitise their processes and constantly pushing the envelope to give users more tools than any other hire software company.

If you want to take the paper out of your office, your warehouse, your yard, maintenance bays, trucks, etc., we can help you — visit pointofrental.com/au/ connect or call (03) 8593 8901

Industry training update

In the last quarter of 2022, the EWPA and HRIA drafted a strategic learning and development plan to meet the current and emerging needs our members. This formalising of strategy speaks to the heart of what we’re all striving to achieve: a safe, highly skilled, profitable and sustainable industry. Fundamental to achieving that vision is our training, learning and education offering.

Many members are aware of our existing portfolio of training, learning and education. While these have existed for various periods of time, our new plan offers something that was not previously available: a dedicated resource to drive and execute this strategy.

A key element of my role as the National Training Consultant is also to proactively engage members across the country to ensure they’re utilising what’s currently available so we can gain an understanding of what is needed to support their businesses. It’s an opportunity that I’ve been enthusiastically throwing myself into! Whether we meet online or face-toface, it’s a great way to gain a greater understanding of their current needs and what additional learning products we need to support them.

The good news is that the reaction from members has been really positive. A great example is the EWP workshops we’ve been running specifically for technicians. While the Australian Standards say you must be ‘competent’ to work on an EWP (MEWP), the definition of ‘competency’ is very broad and difficult to define explicitly. Meeting ‘competency’ requirements is something we’re looking to address. Our training is specific to this industry, developed by key stakeholders, run by the peak industry body, and delivered in partnership with educational professionals (Registered Training Organisations, TAFE etc). So, if you were looking to build a case for competency, our EWP workshops are a great foundation. We’ve now run the workshops in three states with around 100 technicians participating and are in the process of developing the next modules of learning. Watch this space!

Over the next six months, I’ll continue to engage with members and take on board their feedback. While my focus will be on a rolling out our existing offerings on a national level, we’re beginning to develop new offerings on subjects where members have indicated a need for specific modules of training.

We also need to appreciate the broader implications of offering industry training. While safety, sustainability and profitability are always front-of-mind, having comprehensive, standardised training, education and learning available to members is a great value-add for this industry. With skills shortages across so many industries, the challenge is attracting talented people to work with us. As an association, there are many things we’re already doing in this space, however we know that the more you engage people with learning opportunities, the higher the retention levels will be. People feel more valued, stay longer, gain more skills, are safer and more productive. If we can also offer a defined career path, that’s a win for everyone.

If you’re keen to find out more or would like to talk about training in your business, please reach out.

CloudRent set to revolutionise hire and rental

It’s a journey that’s taken Ron Neville from guitarist to gig-booker to app developer. Now, his rental software system is set to revolutionise hire and rental.

He’s long been an ambitious entrepreneur, once owning and managing technology retail stores in Sydney in the 1990s. However, in the early 2000s, he followed a different path, leaving Sydney for the Gold Coast to focus on his passion for music.

While playing and singing in venues became his livelihood, managing bookings became an increasing burden. Determined to address this issue, Ron developed a small application to streamline the booking process. Word spread quickly until one of his clients, who toured with major Australian bands, expressed a need for the software.

Recognising the growing demand, Ron expanded his application, dedicating countless hours to refining it. This gave birth to CloudRent.

He assembled a highly talented team of developers and members from within the rental industry who shared his vision and had a unique understanding of the complexities of the rental market, developing CloudRent as a compelling solution to meet industry needs.

“CloudRent provides users with an intuitive interface and simplifies rental processes, so anyone can use it,” says Ron. “The CloudRent solution is easy to install and is accessible on desktop, Android and Apple devices. The best part is that it is competitively priced, ensuring CloudRent appeals to a broad spectrum of rental companies.”

CloudRent launched its new full SaaS solution at HIRE23 in Sydney. With its cutting-edge cloud-based solution and an exhibitor space which was colourful, engaging and appealing to visitors, the energetic and passionate team at CloudRent showcased their intuitive and modern application to visitors and customers, making the launch of their SaaS solution a great success!

Ron’s journey from entrepreneur to musician and founder of a successful technology business is a testament to following one’s passions. His story inspires individuals to pursue their dreams, no matter how unconventional they seem.

Exciting times ahead for NSW members

I am beyond grateful to have been elected as the NSW State President of the Hire Rental Industry Association. I’m excited to see what we can achieve as an industry over these next few years and how we, as an association, can assist in banding together to ultimately provide hire solutions to our customers.

It’s such an exciting and busy time in NSW with all the current developments and projects under way in our State and a pipeline of future developments projected in the coming years. While it’s hard to isolate a few for mention, the likes of Western Sydney Airport, Westconnex, Sydney Gateway and Inland Rail are some of the largest projects to highlight in our state at the moment.

We have a pipeline consisting of close to 150 infrastructure projects of which half have already received funding commitment for delivery while the other half are in planning. The transport sector continues to account for the majority of the Pipeline (59% of projects) including bypasses such as Coffs Harbour, Singleton to Muswellbrook, Parkes, Mt Ousley and more up on the north side with the M1 Upgrade.

Like most Australians, we have felt the effect of interest rate increases and inflation, leading to more difficult decisions and conversations to be had, compared to previously. Some of these impacts have extended to the collapse of construction firms, which has negatively impacted our industry.

Another hot topic that is consistently arising lately, is sustainability and net zero emissions. There are many recent surveys, and the constant theme in the data shows that an average of 70–80% of Gen Z have a strong commitment to sustainability and are willing to take action (if not already) in changing their behaviour to reduce their impact on the environment. This stems all the way through to their purchasing habits. They are the future, and if we don’t begin the process to listen and adopt now, we will miss the boat once it’ll be too late.

There is so much currently happening in NSW and by far the most exciting times are ahead in our industry.

Expert advice and access to lenders: Why businesses choose finance brokers

MORE THAN HALF OF SMALL BUSINESSES USE EQUIPMENT FINANCE BROKERS FOR A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THEIR FINANCING NEEDS? THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS FOR THIS TREND.

Relationships

First and foremost, brokers can offer the benefits of a long-term relationship, which can be particularly important in a world where bank and account managers frequently change. Business owners appreciate working with someone who understands their business and can represent them to the market without having to repeat their story multiple times.

Service

In addition, brokers offer a service that works around the clock. Because much of the administrative work is done outside of normal business hours, it’s essential to be able to speak with a broker or banker when it’s convenient for you.

A good broker will also manage the entire project, taking care of everything from arranging invoices and insurance to signing documentation and ultimate settlement.

Spreading debt

Brokers can also help businesses spread their debt over several competitive underwriting financiers, which provides a broader base for expansion and some competition to ensure the best interest rates and commercial conditions.

Brokers deliver a competitive facility, in a pain-free manner, that feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the banks.

Advocacy

Another benefit of working with a broker is advocacy. Many business owners are experts in their specific industries but may not be as knowledgeable about financing equipment. A broker will ensure that any approval is most closely aligned with the client’s needs, not just what the bank wants. A capable broker will have the experience, knowledge, skill, and influence to negotiate the best outcome for the client.

The changing market

It’s worth noting that the market for equipment and vehicle financing is changing rapidly. With the increasing popularity of behavioural lending, many underwriters now offer automatic “low doc” competitive finance approvals for selected equipment and vehicle financing up to $150,000 and $500,000 for replacement equipment, trucks, and trailers. Brokers can provide some great alternatives for business owners.

Selecting the right one

However, as with any industry, there are good operators and not-so-good ones. To find the right broker, it’s essential to look at what existing clients are saying and ask other business owners who they use and why. The best referral is a happy customer.

have secondary guarding fitted. When he retired from JLG, he reached out to his contacts for help because he wanted to create a Global Incident Report that could be used to gather the relevant information. His contacts, including me, responded to help him bring the report to life. I’ve used this document on a number of occasions. He was also invaluable in bringing to life other key documents that are now standard across our industry:

• Walking with Scissorlifts

• Policy on Fall Arrest

• Working Over Water.

Dave was that person who if you asked him the time, he would tell you how the watch worked. When I called him asking for help to write my first technical document, he made the time to visit and taught me how to write technical documents. I have now written many. For me, Dave was a bright star, one to follow and learn from and I am a better person for having been mentored by him.

I first met Dave as a service tech at Snorkel training where he was the facilitator. I was wowed by the information he shared and the quality of the technical documents he had personally created. His mantra was “teach a man to fish and feed him for life”.

Dave was relentless in his pursuit of safety.  He was always available to share his knowledge and ideas for continuous improvements to our industry but was also willing to take constructive feedback and follow it through to achieve the right result.  If he saw something that wasn’t safe, he would stop and call it out. He told a story about where he witnessed an unsafe practice when he was out shopping. He spoke to the person calmly about the danger they were in, only to be assaulted and abused. Yet this did not stop Dave and his determination and commitment to safety only grew stronger.

Dave worked with JLG Engineering to make secondary guarding crush protection a reality. Today, there’s not a boom lift sold in Australia that does not

In his spare time after he retired, he reached out to his contacts to help those who were less fortunate. On one occasion, a local school needed laptops for their students as their families could not afford them. Through his network of contacts, used laptops were donated, refurbished and provided to the students.

At the HIRE23 Excellence Awards and Gala Dinner in May, I had the privilege, along with Pete Davis and Tim Nuttall, to posthumously present the EWPA Award – the Dave Single Award — to its namesake in recognition of his services to the Access industry. Dave’s son Neil accepted the award in honour of his late father.

I know I speak for many people when I say he is sadly missed but fondly remembered. His legacy is a safer access industry. There’s also a generation in our industry who knew Dave as an industry icon, a colleague, a peer and a friend, and who will never forget the passion he had for keeping people safe in our industry.

JLG releases new X13SJ Plus Compact Crawler Boom

THE VERSATILE MACHINE IS IDEAL FOR A WIDE SELECTION OF APPLICATIONS.

JLG has expanded its range of compact crawler booms with the recent launch of the X13SJ PLUS model. It's a versatile machine with a small footprint that’s ideal for a wide selection of applications including general maintenance, arboriculture, painting, electrical and HVAC.

The compact and lightweight design coupled with exceptional gradeability provides enhanced flexibility for any application, indoors or outdoors. The X13SJ PLUS features a straight boom with a working height of 12.9 m, 6.4 m working outreach, with a two-person 230 kg unrestricted capacity.

As with the broader JLG range, the X13SJ PLUS is user focused. One touch self-levelling outriggers provide convenient operator set-up and envelope tracking operation allows the machine to follow the building for scissor-like effect. Other productivity benefits include ‘go home’ and ‘go back’ functions which allow the operator to return the machine to the fully closed position at the touch of a button, and then return it to the last saved working position by pressing another.

The machine also features non-marking tracks which can be automatically adjusted to widths of between 0.75 m and 1.10 m, to better suit the workspace or to help manoeuvre through confined job sites: Outrigger pads are also non-marking with a Teflon finish reducing the chance of floor damage in sensitive environments. The machine comes standard with the SkyGuard Skyline enhanced operator protection. Access to the platform is via the 2x slide bar rear entry system.

Powering the X13SJ PLUS is a potent 4.15 kWh – 48V Lithium battery coupled to electric AC drive motors that optimise energy consumption leading to longer run times between charging.

With a weight of only 2,050 kg, the X13SJ PLUS can be easily transported to and from the work site. Integrated forklift pods and heavy-duty lifting eyes, further assist the transportation of the machine. The model is also equipped with integrated front and rear LED lights for enhanced visibility.

Hire Australia and Haulotte launch Community Grant Project

LOCALLY-OWNED MACHINERY HIRE COMPANY, HIRE AUSTRALIA, IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF ELEVATINGCOMMUNITIES, A GRANTS PROGRAM THAT SUPPORTS LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS TO CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE.

The grants program will provide essential funding to organisations and individuals wanting to undertake initiatives that contribute to creating more connected communities.

“There are so many community groups doing great work on a shoestring budget,” said Hire Australia owner Matt Reeves. “We are a 100% locally owned business, and this is something that we have wanted to do for a long time, and we’re excited it’s now a reality.”

The grants will be made possible through the hire of a new scissor lift that Hire Australia purchased for this purpose. Painted a vibrant pink, the machinery will be highly visible on worksites around the community and every dollar made through this hire will be invested in the Elevating Communities grants program.

Inspired by the initiative, Haulotte, a global manufacturer and distributor of aerial work platforms, have offered to support the program by providing the custom paint job, delivery free of charge and contributing funds to go towards the first grant.

“We may be a global company, but we are always looking for ways to support local communities, through donations, volunteering or equipment,” said Haulotte Australia General Manager Keith Clarke. “This is a great initiative, and we look forward to continuing our support into the future.”

“We are grateful for the wonderful support Haulotte have provided to make this grant program a reality,” said Mr Reeves. Mr Reeves said his focus was on making the grants accessible to individuals and groups who can put the funds to good use.

“We have tried to make our grants as easy to access as possible by allowing individuals to apply for funding for a community project,” said Mr Reeves.

“So many local businesses contribute to our community, and we want to make sure we’re doing ourpart,” he said South West Victoria-based community groups, schools and individuals can apply for grants of up to $2000. Applications are accepted at any time and grants are allocated four times a year. Interestedorganisations are encouraged to download the grant guidelines and application form via the Hire Australia website www.hireaustralia. com.au/elevating-communities

Big booms for United Forklift and Access Solutions

UNITED FORKLIFT AND ACCESS SOLUTIONS HAVE THIS MONTH RECEIVED

3 HAULOTTE HT43 RTJ PRO FOR THEIR FLEET ACROSS AUSTRALIA.

This is the first time United have ordered the largest boom available from Haulotte. Doug Rawlings, State Manager from United explains why they are adding more large booms to their rental fleet.

“Demand at the moment in government and civil construction is quite large. For these projects operators need to get as high as possible. Projects are being built higher in Metro areas, but also in mining infrastructure building and maintenance works, so machines that offer the greatest flexibility for height are highly sought after”, said Doug.

The HT43 RTJ PRO features dual platform capacity of 230kg up to 450kg restricted. Its compact base is designed for 360 degrees continuous rotation along with its rotational jib allowing 180 degrees manoeuvrability. With 4WD and 4WS it has the best outside turning radius on the market. It also features Haulotte’s Activ’Shield Bar 2.0 for operator safety. In case of entrapment, the operator is pushed towards the bar integrated into the upper box cover, and the machine stops automatically. The Safety Gap allows a large clearance, preventing driver entrapment.

Given the height operators will be at when using these booms, Haulotte took the opportunity to conduct a thorough training on the machine when it arrived in United’s yard. Australian Technical Specialist for Haulotte Brad Kennaugh describes the need for training and the benefit offered.

“Because of their large size, the 43’s are not as common as the smaller 20m versions, so it was critical that we took the time to get the customer up to speed with the correct operation and safety features. The technical training offered enabled United’s technician’s to better understand how to maintain the machine through-out its life and service requirements. The sales team were given familiarization training which covered the operations and functions of the machine so they can better educate their customers who hire the equipment”, said Brad.

Demand for these booms is not just coming from one area. United has eleven locations across Australia and all are showing increased demand for larger booms. For United, when looking for equipment suppliers, it is not just about availability, it’s about the relationship and the experience.

“The booms have been strategically positioned around Australia in locations that ensure the best possible utilisation rate and we hope to add more in the future. The relationship we have with Haulotte means that we could get what we needed, confident that what we get from Haulotte is quality, support, and spare parts help when we need it”, explained Doug.

Dingli launches new technology for new energy strategy

Through continuous training Dingli have meticulously tuned each new product and fully implemented their new energy strategy. Today, Dingli machines, including scissors, booms, masts, and differentiated products, exceeds 200. With the launch of three new models in three different power unit configurations of high working height T series booms, Dingli is the only manufacturer in the world to have a heavy load, modularized 16-44 meters boom fleet. The army consists of the Orange (diesel), the Green (electric) and the Blue (hybrid). The fleet was developed by Dingli Germany in partnership with TEUPEN enjoying global patent innovation.

Super heavy load capacity

Dingli’s 16-44m large load modular series is divided into three categories, D, M and T according to different working heights. All meet standard container transportation and have completely independent intellectual property rights.

D Series

Independently developed by Dingli Research Center, the maximum working height covers 16-22 meters, while the maximum load has increased from 230kg/300kg, which is common in the industry, to 300/454kg. The D Series has a lightweight design and is equipped with an integrated axle, which has the advantages of light weight, the option of a 4-wheel steer version (‘C’ model), and easy maintenance and transportation. Every boom in the range can also be shipped overseas in a 40ft container! This is a testament to Dingli’s R&D capabilities and a true reflection on modern day EWP ingenuity.

Australia has received its first shipment of BT44RT in July, which quickly grabbed attention from the rental industry, selling out in a matter of days after arrival.

M Series

Jointly developed by Dingli and MAGNI of Italy, the maximum working height covers 22-34 meters and maximum load reaches 300/454kg, and the model below has a maximum working height of 30 meters and a safe working load of 454kg. By moving

down the components and installing an integrated axle, it has the advantages of large load, easy maintenance, strong power, high efficiency, safety, and easy transportation.

T Series

Jointly developed by Dingli and Germany

TEUPEN, the maximum working height covers 36-44 meters, maximum load reaches 300/454kg. Adopting the patented innovative one-key onsite bridge expansion design, it has the advantages of large load, easy maintenance, strong power, high efficiency, safety and easy transportation.

Horizontal and vertical modular design

The modular design is invented by Dingli, meaning machines with: the same drive power but different heights, share the same R&D platform; different power sources (diesel, electric and hybrid) and different heights share the same R&D platform. 85% of all components are compatible, reducing the customer’s follow-up costs on maintenance, spare parts storage and labor wages.

Original aspiration and ingenuity

We already have the most complete modular boom fleet in the industry. Now, with the launch of the Dingli full-boom series, we remain true to our original aspiration and ingenuity. This year, the fourth and fifth phases of Dingli’s “future factory” have received praise after on-site visits by customers from around the world. We will continue to forge ahead, bringing the technology, craftsmanship and quality to a new level!

Bluelift SA18HB: versatile hybrid solution

Ahern Australia is the exclusive Australian distributor for RUTHMANN’s safe, reliable and lightweight, high-performance Bluelift spider lifts.

Suitable for a wide range of applications, the flexible lifts work for maintenance, construction or industrial uses. Carrying a platform capacity from 120kg to 250kg, the spider lifts have extensive ranges suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. Maximum working height reaches from 10.8m to 31m with horizontal outreach from 5.15m to 17.3m.

Ergonomic design helps operators easily move the lift into tight spaces. Its adjustable hydraulic chassis allows for precise positioning in any situation. Proportional controls deliver precise maneuvering to make easy work of accessing high places, such as trees and other tall objects. Bluelift also includes

simultaneous electro-hydraulic capabilities for greater handling where needed. Combining a telescopic boom and articulating jib adds up-and-over capabilities on many models.

Interlocking outriggers help the spider lift maintain balance on all terrain. A self-stabilizing system locks the lift into place for safe work at height. Hydraulically operated articulating outriggers can be set at individual heights. Non-marking rubber treads leave no trace on finished floors.

Compact and narrow, Bluelift spider platforms can fit in confined spaces. Designed to be lightweight and easily transported between jobs, even the heaviest spider lift at 4,700kg can be towed by truck or trailer. The low machine weight allows each spider lift to operate on soft or sensitive surfaces.

The first-ever full hybrid solution meets industry needs for zero emission equipment. Three energyefficient operating modes offer versatility by switching between battery power and combustion engine. Machines can select the most efficient power source to maximize battery cycle, meeting lower emission restrictions with up to 4-5 hours of continuous use.

Popular among arborists in Australia, the 18HB model is ideal for many maintenance tasks thanks to its narrow width and lightweight design. With a maximum working height of 17.8m and maximum horizontal outreach up to 9.3m, this tracked spider lift can easily reach high elevations.

The SA18HB is a full hybrid solution that can switch from battery power to combustion engine in three energy-efficient operating modes.

All Electric mode allows the machine to be solely powered from a 90 amp/hr lithium cell battery whilst operating in a fixed position. Rapid recharging can be completed in approximately 2 hours with an on-board charger.

All Engine mode is operated from the combustion engine for full power and full speed. This is ideal for outdoor usage with the ability to travel long distances.

A radio control with multilingual display makes this machine a global product with the ability to be driven safely through tight areas and uneven terrain. The SA18HB is capable of climbing stairs for a wider range of indoor and outdoor applications. And with a gradeability up to 28%, the self-stabilizing system locks the spider lift into place for safe work at height.

Ahern Australia carries the full line of Bluelift spider lifts including the SA11, SA11P, SA16, SA18, SA18HB, SA22, SA26; SA31 and ST31.

AUG 2023 VOLUME 25 NO. 1
54 Ausco wins Rental Company of the Year A look back at HRIA's biggest ever convention - Hire23

Building connections at HIRE23

Providing deeper dives and valuable insights

To those of you who made the trip to Sydney in May for the HIRE23 Convention, it was great to catch up and spend time working on the business and building connections.

This year, our Events workshop was a little different. After listening to feedback from members in last year’s focus group sessions, our workshop was structured to provide a deeper dive into the way other businesses are tackling common issues and challenges we’re all facing. This was a great opportunity to hear first-hand from our events industry peers and provided some incredibly valuable insights.

Joining us on the workshop panel were:

• Rebecca Stoller: No Fuss

• Dan Clifton:1300 Temp Fence

• Jarrod Nation: Salters

• David Duncalfe: Excel Events Hire

With topics ranging from human resources to logistics, warehousing and sales and marketing, it was a jam packed onehour session. As facilitator, I learned a lot!

To our panellists, my sincere thanks for taking the time to participate and share your knowledge and insights. It was a rewarding and valuable session, that’s now provided a great template for Events workshops in years to come. We certainly look forward to planning and delivering a bigger and better workshop for HIRE24 in Brisbane next year.

The Convention also saw two amazing Events companies in the Awards space which was a great result!

• Barlens Events took the win for Hire Company of the Year - Events

• Salters were runners-up for Hire Company of the Year - Events

• Prestige Modular with their product Continest Foldable Buildings won for best New Product – Events.

These are categories where we haven’t seen a lot of activity in past years so this was wonderful to see.

As we look ahead to the next 12 months, it will be an interesting time as the 5.7% wage increase (from July 2023) will certainly impact labour costs for Events companies. We will also have to wait and see what impact rising interest rates has on event spend across the board, both in the corporate and private event market.

Kennards Hire supports Vivid Sydney, Australia’s largest festival for the sixth consecutive year

Following a two-week ‘bump-in’ period for festival setup, Kennards Hire helped Vivid Sydney dazzle and delight audiences for 23 days and nights, through a celebration of creativity, innovation, and technology.

As part of the agreement, the Kennards Major Projects (KMP) team delivered end-to-end specialist support including equipment supply and servicing, traffic solutions for road closures, and crowd control barriers to help keep the public safe during the magic of Vivid Sydney.

Creating an easy-to-access compound to house equipment whilst not in use, such as vehicles, trailers, fork-lifts, scissor lifts and boom lifts, the KMP team built and serviced eight site compounds throughout the festival.

Kennards Hire supplied more than 2,500 hours of labour, over 30 labourers for hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM), an onsite pop-up store and infrastructure equipment such as sheds, access gear, barriers, VMS boards and fencing.

Simon Tipping at Kennards Hire said: “We’re helping make one of the world’s most visited light festivals as safe and as seamless as possible. In less than three months, we deliver the same amount of work that we’d typically do in a year-long project of a similar scale.”

“As a partner, we want to make putting together the magic of Vivid as easy as possible. We aim to help some of Australia’s most innovative and creative artists bring their visions to life in the safest and easiest way possible, so that they can spend more time creating a beautiful moment for Vivid spectators, and less time worrying about the tools and equipment they need to make it happen.”

Vivid Sydney Festival Director Gill Minervini said: “Vivid Sydney energise Sydney’s CBD. The festival has long had a successful partnership with Kennards, who offer a wide-ranging set of vital services.”

Vivid Sydney is Australia’s largest festival, attracting a record 2.58 million people to the festival in 2022.

FECON UNVEILS NEW DISC HAWK COMPACT DISC MULCHER

Specifically designed for high-flow skid steers and compact track loaders, the attachment increases efficiency where speed and acreage are more important than material size, making it the ideal addition to an existing fleet of mulching equipment. Fecon’s disc mulcher increases productivity with a faster, rougher cut either for first-pass vegetation removal or in instances where maximizing material dispersion without fine chip size is ideal.

“We’re excited to expand our lineup of disc mulchers to provide customers with yet another viable tool in their toolbox to help them get the job done right,” said Mark Middendorf, Fecon’s executive vice president of sales. “This new disc mulcher

is a game-changer for contractors looking to increase their productivity in large land clearing operations.”

At a third of the operating cost of a drum mulcher, the Disc Hawk complements an existing mulching fleet as an ideal high-production alternative for tackling jobs that may not require finely shredded material. With a working width of 152cm, the disc mulcher is purpose-built for 75- to 132-horsepower skid steers and compact track loaders that operate with as little as 114-190 litres per minute of auxiliary hydraulic flow. The unit provides exceptional performance for mulching thicker vegetative material at higher speeds than traditional drum mulchers. A low-profile

motor and deck configuration provides industry-leading visibility and reduces material buildup.

Configurable discharge and intake chutes allow operators to maximize productivity and dispersion needs without compromise. The open brush chute features a larger throat allowing for higher material intake and faster processing of lighter vegetation-like brush. Conversely, the hardwood intake chute guides larger trees into the disc, resulting in quicker processing of thick vegetation. Used in applications where material dispersion is preferred — such as in fire fuel prevention — the broadcast discharge chute is ideal for distributing material faster over large areas. Similarly, the processing discharge chute increases the mulching of finer material with dispersion back towards the ground, making it ideal for agriculture or farm site preparation.

The unique design of the disc ensures perfect balance over the lifetime of the mulching unit, and it comes backed by Fecon’s 12-month, 1,000-hour warranty. The mulcher attachment features 24 bottom tools, 12 edge knife tools and eight top tools, along with optional Carbide tools to minimize wear and ensure optimal performance near rocky terrain.

An adjustable push bar highlights the attachment’s adaptability, allowing operators to toggle between degrees of disc engagement, depending on the application. For example, in the forward position, the push bar guides small debris into the disc. Having the push bar in the furthest back position exposes more of the mulching disc for efficient processing of larger trees and thicker material.

This level of performance makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications, including construction sites, outdoor events, emergency response situations, and more.

Renewable and Environmentally Friendly:

As the world continues to prioritise sustainability and renewable energy sources, innovative companies are stepping up to bridge the gap between traditional power solutions and portable alternatives.

Makinex, has identified a significant opportunity in the hire market for renewable portable power in announcing the launch of the Portable Power Box (PPB). Recognising the restraints of cordless battery options, Makinex has introduced an impressive new product: the Portable Power Box (PPB). With a compact design and exceptional performance, the PPB aims to revolutionise the way industry approaches portable power.

The Need for Portable Power Solutions:

For years, the hire industry has relied heavily on traditional power sources, often

overlooking the benefits of portable and renewable alternatives. While cordless battery options provide mobility, they are limited in terms of power capacity and runtime. Large-scale power sources are cumbersome, time-consuming to charge, and often unnecessary for smaller projects. This gap represents an ideal opportunity for Makinex to introduce an efficient and versatile solution.

Introducing the Portable Power Box (PPB):

The Makinex Portable Power Box (PPB) is a game-changing product that combines the best features of cordless batteries and large-scale power sources, offering a portable, renewable energy solution with impressive performance capabilities. The PPB boasts a 4-hour charge time,

Makinex has incorporated sustainable practices into the design of the PPB offering significant advantages compared to traditional power generators, such as its whisper quite operation and its emissions free output, suitable for working environments that a traditional generator would not be appropriate. This not only benefits the environment but also aligns with the growing demand for sustainable practices across the Hire and Rental Industry.

Versatility and Adaptability:

The Portable Power Box is designed to be versatile and adaptable, capable of meeting the unique power requirements of different applications. Whether it’s powering tools and equipment on a construction site or providing electricity for lighting and sound systems at an outdoor event, the PPB can seamlessly integrate into various settings. Its portability allows for easy transportation, ensuring that power is readily available wherever it's needed.

BLUE DIAMOND MACHINERY SHOWS OFF ELECTRO-HYDROGEN GENERATOR IN LIVE DEMONSTRATION

“It was an epic day in Blue Diamond’s history, and in our hydrogen journey” commented Blue Diamond director Justin Pitts.

The live activation successfully demonstrated the capability of Blue Diamond’s GEH2 electro-hydrogen fuel cell generator. During the display, the GEH2 successfully recharged a POWR2 POWERBANK battery energy storage system (BESS). It was then able to power an Impulse Electric Pump.

“It was a pretty proud moment...” Justin continued.

The GEH2 Hydrogen Generator is specially designed as a clean energy solution to replace diesel or gas gensets in mobile, prime or standby operations. Emitting only water and some heat, the GEH2 is perfect for those in need of a strong power supply, without compromising on their low emission targets.

The recent activation was an open event for customers, potential customers and key industry figures. “We had the likes of FFI, FMG and BHP and some representatives from Rio Tinoto and Mineral Resources – some really fantastic companies,” Justin says.

“Really appreciative of everyone taking the time today to come down...” He adds.

“We’ve got a clear process to do these activations...” Justin notes. For those that want to see the GEH2 in action, Blue Diamond is now able to offer these activations to anyone interested in transitioning to clean energy technologies.

“If you’re looking to see the hydrogen generator in action using the Toyota fuel cell, if you...want to do a trial or proof of case, get in contact with us...” Justin adds.

Along with the GEH2 Hydrogen Generator, Blue Diamond Machinery also offer a growing range of clean energy technologies with our Net Zero Equipment range. This includes battery energy storage units, hybrid power systems and solar lighting towers to help businesses transition to an emission free future.

“If your company has a net zero emission [target] or [is] looking to meet some sustainability targets, I think we’re pretty well placed to help out,” Justin concludes. If your company is looking to meet a net zero emission or sustainability target, contact the experts at Blue Diamond Machinery today.

RÖHLIG LOGISTICS NOTCHES UP 50 YEARS IN AUSTRALIA

When owner-managed transport logistics company Röhlig Logistics notched up 50 years of operation in Australia they celebrated by purchasing a fleet of custom painted Toyota electric forklifts.

The fleet of battery-electric Toyota forklifts were purchased from distributor Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) who added an extra-special touch by having the equipment painted in custom Röhlig blue.

Röhlig Australia Managing Director Mat Vermeulen said the 50-year celebrations would be a great occasion for the company.

TMHA is able to offer custom paint colours to suit any customer’s preference. “Part of the deal with TMHA was to paint the Toyota orange to Röhlig Logistics blue, and we will apply our Röhlig Logistics decals to that and make it part of our 50-year celebrations,” explains Vermeulen.

“We’re about to convert our trucks — we run our own fleet of trucks in the main centres of Australia — and we’re going to convert the curtains to our new 50-year anniversary picture mark.”

Röhlig Logistics recently issued a tender for new material handling equipment, with the emission-free powertrains and dependable performance of Toyota electric forklifts a big reason for TMHA being the company of choice. Vermeulen adds: “We went to market for our MHE, during the start

of COVID. Part of the deal was to look at our sustainability as our organisation. We were using a lot of gas forklifts and we have converted to electric forklifts.”

“We wanted to make sure that those on the floor were engaged and part of the process, and they got to choose which gear they preferred, and Toyota was actually a frontrunner there so very happy with the choice.”

The new Röhlig fleet consists of 13 Toyota electric counterbalance forklifts ranging from 2.0 to 5.0-tonne capacity, two Toyota OME120HW order pickers and four Toyota RRE140H2 reach trucks, distributed across warehouses in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. The tender process was spearheaded by Sydney-based major account manager Michael Provan, who said that the combination of TMHA’s servicing, product and value was unmatched among the competition.

The relationship formed between Röhlig Logistics and Mr Provan’s team has also been a determining factor in the high level of satisfaction for the new forklift fleet. “They’ve been very professional, they obviously understand the product very well, they take a lot of pride in what they do,” said Vermeulen.

Röhlig Logistics 50th anniversary celebrations will take place towards the end of the year with events in each state that it operates. It will also honour long-standing employees and commercial partners of the company. The company has transformed its fleet of trucks with Röhlig Logistics blue liveries, and will mark the occasion with a series of media events.

HIRE & RENTAL’S RECESSION SOLUTION

With interest rates on the rise, strong inflation and talk of a recession, will things actually get that bad? In a recession, capital expenditure is slashed, not just by the little guys but by big companies as well. This is where the hire industry really comes into its' own.

Smart hire companies are looking for opportunities in this new environment. They don’t want to be hampered by having outdated, high maintenance equipment. Australian Pump Industries supports that theory and is committed to hire and rental.

We recently reached our 30th year of service to the industry, and are always interested in what hire wants and needs, because sometimes they’re not the same thing.

When we first started in hire, we didn’t know anything. Kennards Hire gave us an opportunity to bid on pressure cleaners that had to be 'hire proof', but we didn’t know what that meant. We were building some very ordinary pressure cleaners in the shed in my father’s backyard and thought we were doing okay.

It wasn’t until the Kennards team taught us about what happens on a hire site and afterwards as well, that we got the message about machines that are fit for hire, not machines that should be in the workshop all the time after every rental.

Aussie's pressure cleaner success

Building hire proof pressure cleaners has been a real journey. With the Kennards team trusting us with a big order for a large quantity of machines, the first machines we built were a gigantic breakthrough. We built what they said they needed.

Since then, we have consistently worked with the hire industry to evolve, making products that are safer, user friendly and functional.

Enter the Scud, a hire proof product

The Aussie Scud is now touted as the leading high pressure water blaster in hire fleets across Australia. The Scud delivers 4,000 psi pressure out of a Honda 13 hp electric start petrol engine. The machine comes in the

unique welded stainless steel frame design that is ergonomic, easy to push around and provides real functionality and performance. We know people who rent pressure cleaners stop enjoying the experience about two hours after they start the job. What they want to do is get a machine that gets the job done fast and efficiently.

The good news is the Aussie Scud can now be delivered to hire in special configuration with a centre mounted lifting bar with lifting eye bolt, and a stainless steel hose reel with up to 30 metres of hose. It's ideal for construction sites, washing trucks and big gear and similar applications.

Aussie pumps extravaganza product range grows

Aussie’s trash pumps have done a great job in hire over the years under the famous Aussie Quik Prime brand. They served their time in 2”, 3” and 4” configurations with either Honda petrol or Yanmar diesel drives.

The pumps are super reliable and all feature high SG cast iron open impellers and a front opening port clean the pump onsite . Hire companies renting self priming centrifugal pumps need to be told to make sure they have a perfect seal on the suction side.

Aussie Pumps is proud of our association with the hire industry. Every day we learn more about how we can improve ourselves and give you better products for your customers.
