Al Pacino has started a screening series to introduce new audiences to films from his glorious career. Every few weeks the acting icon hosts the special events for an invited audience and talks to them about the enduring impact of the movies. The latest special event saw crime epic Scarface screened at the historic Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, an elegant picture palace which has been around since 1937. “Scarface has not been seen on the big screen for a long time and it’s much better to watch it here than on an iPhone,” joked Al when introducing the movie. He talked about his pleasure at how the 1983 drug lord drama has endured and continues to entertain new audiences, adding: “Rappers and hip-hoppers have especially embraced the film and they really get it.” Pacino puts on the private screenings with his producer pal and regular collaborator Barry Navidi as a way of keeping the appreciation of the art and themes behind the movies alive and thriving as discussion topics. Other Al films to have been celebrated in this way include Salome, Bobby Deerfield and Looking for Richard.
