Rooney

Two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara has been cast as Audrey Hepburn in an upcoming biopic of the iconic actress. As well as playing the My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffany’s star, she is also a producer on the as yet untitled film for Apple. With acclaimed performances in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Carol and Nightmare Alley, she certainly has the talent and experience for the role. But not everyone is happy with the casting choice. Many fans of Emily in Paris actress Lily Collins, an Audrey lookalike, took to social media expressing their feelings that their favorite was a better fit for the part. Not just a film superstar, Hepburn was also a fashion icon and humanitarian. Plot details are still under warps for the new movie, which will be directed by Call Me By Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. Sandro Monetti 8

Al Pacino has started a screening series to introduce new audiences to films from his glorious career. Every few weeks the acting icon hosts the special events for an invited audience and talks to them about the enduring impact of the movies. The latest special event saw crime epic Scarface screened at the historic Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, an elegant picture palace which has been around since 1937. “Scarface has not been seen on the big screen for a long time and it’s much better to watch it here than on an iPhone,” joked Al when introducing the movie. He talked about his pleasure at how the 1983 drug lord drama has endured and continues to entertain new audiences, adding: “Rappers and hip-hoppers have especially embraced the film and they really get it.” Pacino puts on the private screenings with his producer pal and regular collaborator Barry Navidi as a way of keeping the appreciation of the art and themes behind the movies alive and thriving as discussion topics. Other Al films to have been celebrated in this way include Salome, Bobby Deerfield and Looking for Richard.

Fight For Justice An international battle for justice which has raged for many years is now headed to the screen. A docu-drama is in development in Hollywood about a family’s lengthy fight for compensation over their legacy being seized by Nazis. The Jewish Tietz family owned major department stores in pre-war Germany, employing 25,000 people, until the Nazis forced expulsion of Jews from economic life there and the family fled overseas having been forced to transfer ownership to a non-Jewish owner. Now their descendants are claiming full restitution from the German government in a complex and ongoing legal case that has attracted Hollywood attention. The as yet untitled project is in a similar vein to the 2015 film Woman in Gold, which starred Helen Mirren in the true story of a Jewish woman trying to reclaim family possessions seized by the Nazis with the help of a crusading lawyer, played by Ryan Reynolds.

Date With Destiny

In one of its biggest development moves yet, Big Screen Entertainment Group is collaborating on the adaptation of a popular eight book vampire saga, Dead End Dating, into a TV series. The busy Los Angeles based production company will team with seasoned TV professionals to bring to the screen author Kimberly Raye’s bestsellers set around a matchmaking agency for vampires, werewolves, other fantastical creatures and humans. “The books are fantastic and we are so excited to turn them into a TV series. This is a whole creative world full of mystery, humor, romance, magic and otherworldly fun,” said Kimberley Kates, Chief Executive of Big Screen, who is at work on the pilot script with acclaimed writer Catherine Taylor. The same duo’s work on another upcoming TV drama, World War 2 story, Avenger Field was recently rated in the top 1 percent of pilots by Hollywood’s top script coverage service, WeScreenplay. Also on the development team involved with bringing DEAD END DATING to the screen are writer/producer/director Michael Lange (Dawson’s Creek and Criminal Minds) and producer Kasana Golod (Better Start Running and Jackie & Ryan). “I’m beyond thrilled to be working with Kimberley and Big Screen,” said executive producer Michael Lange. “I’ve been watching in awe as the company has become so successful and know that BSEG and Dead End Dating will be a perfect fit.” Translated into 12 languages around the world, the much-loved book series has taken a big bite out of the vampire fiction world. The show is being set up at a streaming network with BSEG being a co-production company on the series along with Kasana Golod, Michael Lange, Kates and Taylor attached as Executive Producers. Big Screen Entertainment Group is a long-established production and distribution company with several projects in active development, including the Christmas film Santa4Real, Avenger Field, Earth Angels, CSI mystery thriller Black Magic and a high end sci-fi drama, Singularity Principle. In addition to developing original content, Big Screen owns Big Stream, a pay to stream service with over 250 titles and growing. Another new development has seen Big Stream Entertainment now becoming available on Android devices through the Google Play store.

Hollywood icon Ann-Margret is going back to her roots and launching a new album at the age of 80. Born to be Wild on Cleopatra Records, sees the still vivacious redhead singing the kind of classic songs that first made her a star. The actress and singer launched the record at a live appearance following a special Hollywood screening of her 1963 musical film, Bye Bye Birdie. “I feel so blessed and thrilled,”said the veteran performer, whose other film roles include Viva Las Vegas,Tommy and Grumpy Old Men. U2 frontman Bono has taken on his first movie acting role – and it’s something of a surprise choice. The singer plays a lion in animated film Sing 2. But, in common with the pop star, the lion character, Clay, is a famous veteran singer-songwriter. Although he was first choice for the part, the makers of Sing 2 feared they would struggle to persuade Bono to accept the role. Instead he instantly responded to the idea of playing a character who has left the spotlight while grieving the loss of a loved one.

It turns out that he was looking for a meaningful, emotional and impactful part like this if he was every going to break into movies. Bono explained: “That’s the whole point of these animations, you use these fun characters to play with deeper, darker themes. Kids and their parents watch them again and again. Much more than movies which win Oscars, they become part of our consciousness. They help shape the way we see things.” Other stars joining Bono in the voice cast of Sing 2 include Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon. 23

DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS In one of the cleverest movie ideas in years, the popularity of superheroes and pets has been combined into an eagerly anticipated animated film. The concept here is that Superman’s dog, Krypto, shares all the powers of his owner and forms a team of superpowered pets to save the world. It’s basically the Avengers on four legs – and with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart among the voice talent this one could earn superpowered box office takings.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK It’s 36 years since the original but Tom Cruise still feels the need for speed. He returns to his iconic role as ace fighter pilot Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The sequel finds him training a new generation of daredevil flyers, including the son of Maverick’s late friend Goose, Bradley Bradshaw (played by Miles Teller).

JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION The sixth entry in the smash hit Jurassic Park saga unites the main casts of the original and more recent parts of the franchise. So this time Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are teamed with Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum. All that combined dinosaur catching experience will be needed as the storyline sees the creatures who were raised in a theme park now out in the wild, spread all the over the world and threatening to take over the planet.

ELVIS Moviegoers are sure to be all shook up by this biopic from visionary director Baz Luhrmann. It’s the rags to riches story of Elvis Presley (newcomer Austin Butler) and the star’s relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker (played by Tom Hanks with a bald head). Can the King of Rock n’ Roll rule the box office like he ruled the pop charts? 27

TECHNOLOGY & DEVELOPMENT

The long delay for a sequel to 2009 superhit Avatar has largely been caused by the wait for technology to be invented that matches director James Cameron’s ambitious vision. But now the moviemaker finally has the tools he needs and the next chapter in the sci-fi saga is set for release in December 2022. Cameron says of the advanced tech, “It’s all insanely complicated.” But its mind-blowing impact could change movies forever. Avatar 2 features so many industry changing innovations that it will open up new worlds of possibilities for films to do what was previously unthinkable. Among them is the first ever use of motion capture filming underwater, which is needed because so much of the follow up takes place beneath the waves of the planet Pandora.

30

TECHNOLOGY & DEVELOPMENT

GOE S DEEP

The cast – which includes Kate Winslet, along with stars of the original movie, like Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana – had to film many of their scenes in a specially built 900,000 gallon water tank while wearing motion capture suits (see below). Those scenes will be mixed with computer generated imagery and live action sequences to make Avatar 2, quite possibly, the most spectacular production ever put on film.

REVIEWS

The first three months of the year have traditionally been seen as the time when studios dump their least impressive film releases – and there were certainly some duds early in 2022. But there were some treasures to be found also. Here, editor-in-chief Sandro Monetti reviews six of the first quarter offerings and rates them as a percentage score.

MARRY ME

75%

Despite all her success, Jennifer Lopez has to be one of the most underrated talents in showbiz. She’s never won a major award – not even a Grammy – but here again proves herself one of the top romantic comedy actresses. This is a bang up to date retread of the Notting Hill formula about a superstar falling for a regular guy – and it’s so much fun.

The King's Daughter 70%

When a film has been left on the shelf for seven years and finally released with little publicity, you’d assume it was a total misfire. Instead, this fantasy adventure proves an utter delight. Pierce Brosnan is terrific as King Louis XIV of France who hatches a bizarre plan to capture a mermaid, believing she can bring him immortality.

32

REVIEWS

DEATH ON THE NILE

65%

It’s hard to mess up an Agatha Christie story because her plots are just so perfect and this proves a fine addition to her cinematic adaptations. Gal Gadot steals the show bringing real star quality to her role as a rich beauty surrounded by resentful enemies.

MOONFALL 40% The science seems sketchy at best in this sci-fi disaster movie in which the moon is falling towards the Earth – hence the title. Halle Berry, as the Deputy Director of NASA, does her best to save the day. But she can’t save the script.

THE

355 25%

What a waste of talents. This mess of an espionage “thriller” sees great actresses Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz and Lupita Nyong’o saddled with underwritten characters who are about as deep as a puddle. Total letdown.

rethink needed The Academy Awards have celebrated the best in film for 94 years. But a major rethink is needed if the ceremony is going to make it to 100 in good shape. The nominations for 2022 show how out of touch the voters are with public tastes – and that gap needs fixing for the sake of the event. It’s a change in mindset which is needed because, in the 21st century especially, voters have repeatedly dismissed popular films as not worthy of awards recognition and continued to favor more artistic but less commercial choices. As former Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel joked on his US talk show: “The Power of the Dog got 12 nominations – one for every person who saw it!”

36

O S C A R S : PA S T, P R E S E N T & F U T U R E

Box office juggernauts like Spider-Man: No Way Home and No Time to Die didn’t just make big money but received big acclaim too – except from Oscar voters. And so, instead of James Bond v Spider-Man in a battle of the blockbusters, or even House of Gucci v Shang-Chi, Academy Awards viewers were left with Drive My Car v Coda. No wonder TV viewing figures for the ceremony continue to fall. Jimmy Kimmel also asked: “Why do best picture nominees have to be serious? When did that become a perquisite for getting nominated for an Academy Award?” The answer is: about 20 years ago. Among the crowd-pleasing movies to have nominated for the best picture Oscar in the past are Jaws, The Towering Inferno, Rocky (which won), E.T., Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ghost, The Full Monty and The Sixth Sense. It would seem unthinkable for films like that to be nominated now. But it shouldn’t be the case. Memo to the Academy: popular does not mean bad. Don’t be movie snobs, be movie lovers like the rest of us. Editorial by Sandro Monetti
